Abstract
AIMS This pilot study delivered a comprehensive exercise education intervention to youth with new-onset type 1 diabetes (T1D) and their parents to increase knowledge and confidence with physical activity (PA) shortly after diagnosis. METHODS Youth initiated continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and PA trackers within 1 month of diagnosis. Youth and their parents received the 4-session intervention over 12 months. Participants completed self-report questionnaires at baseline, 6- and 12-months. Surveys were analyzed using linear mixed effects models. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups explored experiences with the exercise education intervention. Groups and interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS A total of 16 parents (aged 46 ± 7 years; 88 % female; 67 % non-Hispanic White) and 17 youth (aged 14 ± 2 years; 41 % female; 65 % non-Hispanic White) participated. Worry about hypoglycemia did not worsen throughout the study duration. Parents and youth reported increased knowledge and confidence in managing T1D safely and preventing hypoglycemia during PA following receiving the tailored exercise education intervention. CONCLUSION This study assessed a novel structured exercise education program for youth and their parents shortly following T1D diagnosis. These results support the broad translation and acceptability of a structured exercise education program in new-onset T1D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM There is a lack of data on effectiveness of diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs for South Asian adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). This formative research was conducted to explore existing practices on the said subject and gather information for planning an intervention program. METHODS AND MATERIALS We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with endocrinologists, dieticians, diabetes educators and adults with T1DM. The participants were selected from a mix of public and private health facilities. Thematic analysis using inductive and deductive approach was undertaken. The intervention was developed and refined using the principles of FUSED and COM-B models. RESULTS In total, 28 in-depth interviews were conducted, 18 with health care professionals and 10 with adult individuals with T1DM. The results demonstrated deficiencies in the implementation of a structured self-management program for diabetes owing to several patient and healthcare system-related factors. A detailed nutritional counseling was provided at all sites by a qualified dietitian, however, carbohydrate counting was not routinely practiced. The interviews of this formative research revolved around: (a) evaluation of the existing usual care and gaps in implementation of a structured DSMES program, and (b) development of themes that will help in formulation of an intervention package and its effective delivery to the participants. CONCLUSION This research study comprehensively investigated the existing practices among diabetes-health care professionals caring for persons living with T1DM and rendered insights towards development of a scientific DSMES program.

Abstract
This study systematically reviewed processes and educational programs for self-management of health and diseases that are the subject of public health attention. This systematic review of the literature (SRL) is relevant to recognizing the characteristics of the educational processes in self-managing chronic diseases in contexts where technology did not play a significant role. Following the PRISMA protocol, the authors independently reviewed full-text articles from several databases using the following criteria: (1) intervention studies evaluating the effects of self-management health programs; (2) educational process of disease self-management; (3) studies that included at least one control group, and (4) peer-reviewed studies. In addition, the Scottish Intercollegiate Guideline Network measurement tool was used to assess the risk of bias in each trial. In the final sample, 38 articles were included. The findings regarding health education methods of self-care, using community-based care and technological tools, are considered fundamental. Among the conclusions, the relevance of the pedagogy that health education processes demand improvement in post-pandemic program effectiveness stands out.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Emerging adulthood (ages 18-29) presents many emotional, social, and developmental challenges that can contribute to an increased sense of burden when managing type 1 diabetes (T1D). Diabetes distress (DD) is the concept that captures the emotional burden, frustrations, and worries resulting from living with T1D. This integrative review sets out to examine the impact of developmental context by answering this question: How do the challenges of emerging adulthood inform our understanding of DD? RECENT FINDINGS DD is highly prevalent in emerging adults and occurs at higher rates than in other age groups. Qualitative studies reveal that DD is embedded within the developmental challenges specific to living with T1D during this stage. Quantitative studies reveal the prevalence and correlates of DD in this age group, and qualitative studies augment these findings by capturing the scope and complexity of the emotional burden of living with T1D as an emerging adult.

Abstract
AIMS To evaluate a 5-day self-management education course for young people with Type 1 diabetes and assess its effects on knowledge, self-efficacy, beliefs, distress, self-management behaviours and HbA1c . METHODS This is an evaluation of a structured education course. Young people (aged 16-24 years) with Type 1 diabetes were recruited from three diabetes centres. In the first centre, participants completed self-report measures of knowledge, self-efficacy, positive and negative outcome expectancies, and hypoglycaemic worries at baseline (n=47) and the end of the course (n=42). In two additional centres, participants completed these and other measures assessing self-management behaviours, cognitive adaptation to diabetes and diabetes distress at baseline (n=32), the end of the course (n=27) and 3-month follow-up (n = 27). HbA1c levels were recorded at baseline (n=79), 6 months (n=77) and 12 months (n=65). RESULTS There were statistically significant increases in self-report knowledge, self-efficacy, positive outcome expectancies and self-management behaviours, and a statistically significant decrease in negative outcome expectances, between baseline and the end of the course. There were also statistically significant increases in self-report knowledge, self-efficacy, self-management behaviours and cognitive adaptation to diabetes between baseline and 3-month follow-up. Compared with baseline, HbA1c levels decreased by a mean (sd) of 5.44 (19.93) mmol/mol (0.48%) at 6 months (P=0.019), and by 5.98 (23.32) mmol/mol (0.54%) at 12 months (P =0.043). DISCUSSION The results indicate the potential benefits of a self-management course designed to address the developmental needs and challenges faced by young people with Type 1 diabetes. Further studies with larger numbers and appropriate controls are required to confirm these initial findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the literature on chronic disease self-management programs that blend face-to-face and online/computer-based education design and delivery. METHODS A critical interpretive synthesis was conducted. Studies that described blended chronic disease self-management programs were reviewed. Two reviewers performed independent database searches, eligibility screening, and data extraction. Findings were synthesized using a conceptual mapping process. RESULTS Twelve articles were included in the final review. Studies focused on patients with diagnoses of diabetes, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. Factors influencing the design and delivery of programs focused on patient characteristics (such as disease prognosis, time since diagnosis, social determinants of health, health literacy, and proficiency with online/computer-based technologies). CONCLUSIONS Blended learning self-management programs should consider the suitability of programs in light of health conditions and patient characteristics. Individual patient needs can be identified through clinician-driven assessments, including collaborative goal setting and the selection of pertinent educational tools. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS When considering the design and delivery of chronic disease self-management education programs, healthcare providers should consider three factors: 1) patient characteristics, 2) learning perspectives, and 3) design technology options that best meet patient abilities, clinician expertise, and administrative capacity.

Abstract
We utilise Bury's (1982) biographical disruption to examine young people's experiences of type 1 diabetes. Our findings show that young adults adopted various 'subject positions' across different illness contexts. The subject positions deployed are intended to produce a particular kind of normal embodied identity unaffected by diabetes. First, participants concealed their illness in public spaces and challenged cultural stereotypes of diabetes to maintain a normal illness biography. Disruption was ever present and required careful negotiation to avoid exposure of illness in public. Young adults upheld a 'normal public presentation'. Second, they resisted the medical system's pressure to adhere to glucose targets asserting and maintaining a subject position of 'independent and autonomous young adults'. Here, disruption was transient and temporary, present in the clinic but not always beyond. It remained in the background for much of the time until it was reinforced by parents or at meal times. Third, young adults acquired a 'pragmatic subject position' with diabetes viewed as complex but manageable, no longer a target for resistance. Frank's (1995) 'narrative restitution' is adopted to describe the transition to life with 'normal' illness. We argue that illness experience was 'liminal' and reflected the subject positions adopted by young adults.
