Abstract
Sensorimotor adaptation is a form of motor learning that is essential for maintaining motor performance across the lifespan and is integral to recovery of function after neurological injury. Recent research indicates that experiencing a balance-threatening physical consequence when making a movement error during adaptation can enhance subsequent motor memory. This is perhaps not surprising, as learning to avoid injury is critical for our survival and well-being. Reward and punishment can also differentially modify aspects of motor learning. However, it remains unclear whether other forms of non-physical consequences can impact motor learning. Here we tested the hypothesis that a loud acoustic stimulus linked to a movement error during adaptation could lead to greater generalization and consolidation. Two groups of participants (n = 12 each) adapted to a new, prism-induced visuomotor mapping while performing a precision walking task. One group experienced an unexpected loud acoustic stimulus (85 dB tone) when making foot-placement errors during adaptation. This auditory consequence group adapted faster and showed greater generalization with an interlimb transfer task, but not greater generalization to an obstacle avoidance task. Both groups showed faster relearning (i.e., savings) during the second testing session one week later despite the presence of an interference block of trials following initial adaptation, indicating successful consolidation. However, we did not find significant differences between groups with relearning during session 2. Overall, our results suggest that auditory consequences may serve as a useful method to improve motor learning, though further research is required.

Abstract
Although animal research implicates a central role for dopamine in motor skill learning, a direct causal link has yet to be established in neurotypical humans. Here, we tested if a pharmacological manipulation of dopamine alters motor learning, using a paradigm which engaged explicit, goal-directed strategies. Participants (27 females; 11 males; aged 18-29 years) first consumed either 100 mg of levodopa (n = 19), a dopamine precursor that increases dopamine availability, or placebo (n = 19). Then, during training, participants learnt the explicit strategy of aiming away from presented targets by instructed angles of varying sizes. Targets jumped mid-movement by the instructed aiming angle. Task success was thus contingent upon aiming accuracy and not speed. The effect of the dopamine manipulations on skill learning was assessed during training and after an overnight follow-up. Increasing dopamine availability at training improved aiming accuracy and lengthened reaction times, particularly for larger, more difficult aiming angles, both at training and, importantly, at follow-up, despite prominent session-by-session performance improvements in both accuracy and speed. Exogenous dopamine thus seems to result in a learnt, persistent propensity to better adhere to task goals. Results support the proposal that dopamine is important in engagement of instrumental motivation to optimize adherence to task goals, particularly when learning to execute goal-directed strategies in motor skill learning.

Abstract
We encounter and process information from multiple sensory modalities in our daily lives, and research suggests that learning can be more efficient when contexts are multisensory. In this study, we were interested in whether face identity recognition memory might be improved in multisensory learning conditions, and to explore associated changes in pupil dilation during encoding and recognition. In two studies participants completed old/new face recognition tasks wherein visual face stimuli were presented in the context of sounds. Faces were learnt alongside no sound, low arousal sounds (Experiment 1), high arousal non-face relevant, or high arousal face relevant (Experiment 2) sounds. We predicted that the presence of sounds during encoding would improve later recognition accuracy, however, the results did not support this with no effect of sound condition on memory. Pupil dilation, however, was found to predict later successful recognition both at encoding and during recognition. While these results do not provide support to the notion that face learning is improved under multisensory conditions relative to unisensory conditions, they do suggest that pupillometry may be a useful tool to further explore face identity learning and recognition.

Abstract
Background Because it is one of the important pathways for promoting motor recovery after cortical injury, the function of the reticulospinal tract (RST) has received increasing attention in recent years. However, the central regulatory mechanism of RST facilitation and reduction of apparent response time is not well understood. Objectives To explore the potential role of RST facilitation in the acoustic startle priming (ASP) paradigm and observe the cortical changes induced by ASP reaching tasks. Methods Twenty healthy participants were included in this study. The reaching tasks were performed with their left and right hands. Participants were instructed to get ready after the warning cue and complete the reach as soon as they heard the Go cue. Half of the testing trials were set as control trials with an 80-dB Go cue. The other half of the trials had the Go cue replaced with 114-dB white noise to evoke the StartleReact effect, inducing reticulospinal tract facilitation. The response of the bilateral sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) and the anterior deltoid was recorded via surface electromyography. Startle trials were labeled as exhibiting a positive or negative StartleReact effect, according to whether the SCM was activated early (30-130 ms after the Go cue) or late, respectively. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy was used to synchronously record the oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin fluctuations in bilateral motor-related cortical regions. The β values representing cortical responses were estimated via the statistical parametric mapping technique and included in the final analyses. Results Separate analyses of data from movements of the left or right side revealed significant activation of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during RST facilitation. Moreover, left frontopolar cortex activation was greater in positive startle trials than in control or negative startle trials during left-side movements. Furthermore, decreased activity of the ipsilateral primary motor cortex in positive startle trials during ASP reaching tasks was observed. Conclusion The right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the frontoparietal network to which it belongs may be the regulatory center for the StartleReact effect and RST facilitation. In addition, the ascending reticular activating system may be involved. The decreased activity of the ipsilateral primary motor cortex suggests enhanced inhibition of the non-moving side during the ASP reaching task. These findings provide further insight into the SE and into RST facilitation.

Abstract
When intense sound is presented during light muscle contraction, inhibition of the corticomotoneuronal pathway is observed. During action preparation, this effect is reversed, with sound resulting in excitation of the corticomotoneuronal pathway. We investigated how combined maintenance of a muscle contraction during preparation for a ballistic action impacts the magnitude of the facilitation of motor output by a loud acoustic stimulus (LAS) - a phenomenon known as the StartReact effect. Participants executed ballistic wrist flexion movements and a LAS was presented simultaneously with the imperative signal in a subset of trials. We examined whether the force level or muscle used to maintain a contraction during preparation for the ballistic response impacted reaction time and/or the force of movements triggered by the LAS. These contractions were sustained either ipsilaterally or contralaterally to the ballistic response. The magnitude of facilitation by the LAS was greatest when low force flexion contractions were maintained in the limb contralateral to the ballistic response during preparation. There was little change in facilitation when contractions recruited the contralateral extensor muscle, or when they were sustained in the same limb that executed the ballistic response. We conclude that a larger network of neurons which may be engaged by a contralateral sustained contraction prior to initiation may be recruited by the LAS, further contributing to the motor output of the response. These findings may be particularly applicable in stroke rehabilitation where engagement of the contralesional side may increase the benefits of a LAS to the functional recovery of movement.
