Glass fiber posts relining: can composite opacity influence retention to root canal dentin?

This study aimed at evaluating the influence of glass-fiber post (GFP) relining with composites of different opacities on resin cement layer thickness (CLT), bond strength (BS) to root dentin, and resin cement degree of conversion (DC%). Standardized roots of 52 bovine incisors had their canals prepared and were distributed into 4 groups (n = 10 for CLT and BS; n = 3 for DC%) according to the post used: WP3 (Control)-Whitepost DC3; groups DE, EN and TR-Whitepost DC0.5 relined, respectively, with dentin, enamel, and translucent shade composites. After cementation, specimens were sectioned into six 1.0 mm-thick discs that were submitted to push-out BS test. CLT and failure pattern were evaluated using a stereomicroscope and DC% by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). The control group showed greater CLT than all relined groups (p < 0.05), which did not differ from each other (p > 0.05). Groups relined with low opacity composites (TR; EN) showed the highest BS and DC% means (p < 0.05). BS was not different among root thirds (p > 0.05), while DC% decreased from cervical to apical third (p < 0.05). Adhesive failures between cement and dentin were predominant, except for group DE with frequent mixed failures. It could be concluded that composite opacity did not influence CLT, which was thinner when GFP were relined and that relining GFP with lower opacity composites led to higher BS and DC%.

Light transmission and bond strength of glass fiber posts submitted to different surface treatments

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Light transmitted deep into the root canal is an important parameter to increase bonding of the cement to the post and dentin. Glass fiber posts seem to be an option to increase transmitted light, but literature on the light transmittance profile and power transmission to deep canal regions is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate light delivered by 2 types of fiberglass posts submitted to different surface treatments and to evaluate the bond strength.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Whiteposts and Superposts were allocated to 4 groups: no surface treatment, surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide, surface treatment with silane, and surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide plus silane. The total light transmitted by the posts was measured by using an integrating sphere to collect the diffuse light. The light profile that was laterally delivered to the post was measured with a power detector equipped with an optical fiber probe. The bond strength was measured with the push-out test. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the surface treatments. The light transmission data were analyzed by using a generalized linear model and the Bonferroni test and the bond strength values were evaluated by using ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The cervical third presented the highest transmission (74.1% for Whiteposts and 74.6% for Superposts), followed by the middle (20.9% for Whiteposts and 20.4% for Superposts) and apical (5.0% for both Whiteposts and Superposts) thirds. Superposts led to higher bond strength than Whiteposts (9.73 ±5.89 and 8.48 ±4.99 MPa, respectively). Surface treatment with silane and hydrogen peroxide plus silane afforded similar bond strength (11.4 ±6.4 and 10.7 ±5.6 MPa, respectively), which was higher as compared with the bond strength obtained after surface treatment with hydrogen peroxide. For both post types, the bond strength decreased from the cervical (12.2 ±6.0 MPa) to the middle (9.7 ±5.0 MPa) and apical (6.5 ±3.6 MPa) thirds.

CONCLUSIONS

Light transmission and bond strength decreased from the cervical to the apical third. Surface treatment impacted bond strength; light transmission through Whiteposts was slightly higher than light transmission through Superposts.

Potencial antimicrobiano de diferentes retentores intrarradiculares frente a Enterococcus faecalis: uma avaliação in vitro

Resumo Introdução O tratamento endodôntico tem como objetivo erradicar microrganismos bacterianos e fúngicos do canal radicular, ou pelo menos possibilitar sua redução para níveis compatíveis com a saúde do tecido perirradicular, uma vez que, após o tratamento endodôntico, colônias de microrganismos residuais podem estar presentes nos túbulos dentinários e no cemento. Objetivo Avaliar o potencial antimicrobiano de diferentes tipos de retentores intrarradicularess em dentes bovinos. Material e método 50 dentes unirradiculares após tratamento endodôntico concluído foram desobturados, bem como tiveram seus condutos preparados para a cimentação dos retentores intrarradiculares. Posteriormente, os dentes foram contaminados por Enterococcus faecalis por meio da montagem de um dispositivo, o qual permitiu a infiltração bacteriana. Os dados resultantes da contagem das Unidades Formadoras de Colônia foram analisados utilizando o teste de ANOVA one-way, seguido pela análise de comparações múltiplas de Tukey. Resultado Decorrido o período de 14 dias, o grupo que apresentou a maior infiltração bacteriana foi o grupo-controle, o qual não continha nenhum tipo de retentor intrarradicular, seguido do G1-FV (grupo de continha retentor radicular de fibra de vidro) e G2-FC (grupo de que continha retentores radiculares de fibra de carbono). O menor grau de recuperação bacteriana foi encontrado nos grupos G3-Ni-Cr e G4-Cu-Al, os quais continham retentores intrarradiculares metálicos formados por ligas de níquel-cromo e cobre-alumínio, respectivamente. Conclusão Os retentores aqui avaliados apresentam diferentes efeitos antimicrobianos. Assim, a utilização de um pino com melhores resultados antimicrobianos favorece maiores chances de sucesso nos tratamentos reabilitadores.

Biological and antibacterial properties of a new silver fiber post: In vitro evaluation

Background

The incorporation of nano silver particles (AgNPs) to improve antibacterial properties of dental materials has become increasingly common. The aim of the present study was to compare the antibacterial activity and cytotoxicity effects of different fiber posts: glass fiber post, quartz fiber post, nano fiber post and silver fiber post.

Material and Methods

The antibacterial activity against S. mutans, S. salivarius and S. sanguis was evaluated by using the agar disc diffusion test (ADT). Four wells of 3x2 mm (one for each material) were made with a punch by removing the agar and filled with the materials to be evaluated. The size of the inhibition zone was calculated. An extract was made eluting the posts in cell culture medium using the surface area-to-volume ratio of approximately 1.25cm²/ml between the surface of the samples and the volume of medium. Cell cultures were then exposed to 100 μL of the extracts medium. After 24 h, cell viability was determined using the MTT assay.

Results

Silver fiber post was the only material showing a fair antibacterial effect against all the three streptococcal strains. The level of cytotoxicity of all the fiber posts tested was higher than 90% and therefore they were considered not cytotoxic.

Conclusions

The new silver fiber post reported a fair antibacterial activity. On the other hand all the fiber posts tested (including the post with incorporated AgNPs) proved to be biocompatible, suggesting that their application does not represent a threat to human health.
