Influence of etching mode on bonding performance of self-adhesive flowable resin composites to bovine teeth

This study aimed to evaluate the bonding performance of self-adhesive flowable resin composites (SARs) to bovine teeth. Three SARs, one experimental, and two commercially available products, were used. The study parameters were shear bond strength (SBS), microleakage, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evaluation of bonding interfaces. The SBS of the materials was 14.1-15.1 MPa to enamel, 22.2-23.2 MPa to etched enamel, and 7.4-10.7 MPa to dentin. Specimens with pre-etching showed lower microleakage scores than those without pre-etching. SEM images of the interfaces of the materials showed excellent adaptation regardless of the substrate or etching mode. The study results indicate that enamel pre-etching can improve the bonding performance of SARs.

Does extended air-drying time improve bond strength of universal adhesives to enamel?

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the effect of extended air-drying time on the microshear bond strength (MSBS) of universal adhesives to enamel.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The distal and mesial specimens from third molars were wet-ground and randomly assigned to three groups according to adhesives tested (n = 60): Clearfil Bond Universal, Gluma Bond Universal, and G-Premio Bond. The adhesives were applied in etch-and-rinse or self-etch modes, followed by air-drying for 5, 15, or 25 s. Composite buildups were constructed and subjected to the MSBS test after 24-h or thermocycling. MSBS results were evaluated using a four-way ANOVA. The thickness of the adhesive layer and the degree of solvent evaporation were further evaluated.

RESULTS

At 24-h, MSBS of G-Premio Bond significantly improved with the 25 s air-drying in both of the etching modes when compared to the 5 s air-drying. After thermocycling, the extended air-drying did not produce a significant difference on the MSBS, regardless of the application strategy. Extended air-drying (25 s) evaporated almost all of the volatile part of Gluma Bond Universal and G-Premio Bond.

CONCLUSIONS

Extended air-drying times increased solvent evaporation but did not contribute to the bonding effectiveness of the adhesives, regardless of the etching mode.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Air-drying applications for more than 5 s had no significant effect on enamel bonding performance of universal adhesives.

Bond Strength and Adhesion Mechanisms of Novel Bone Adhesives

Bone adhesives offer distinct advantages over the use of screws to attached internal fixation plates (IFPs). As the chemical composition of bone is similar to dentine, it is possible that the types of monomers used to make dentine adhesives could be utilised to affix IFPs to bone. The ability to attach a bio-resorbable IFP to porcine bone was assessed for the monomer 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP), used either as a homopolymer or a copolymer with urethane dimethacrylate (MDP + U). Additionally, the addition of a priming step (MDP + U + P) was evaluated. The chemical interactions of the monomers with bone were assessed using XRD and imaged using TEM, revealing the formation of nano-layered structures with the MDP primer, something we believe has not been reported on bone. In a 6-week artificial aging study both MDP + U and MDP + U + P demonstrated adequate shear bond strength to affix bio-resorbable IFPs. The cytotoxicity profiles of the adhesive formulations were determined using indirect and direct contact with MC3T3 cells, with indirect conditions suggesting the MDP + U + P is as cytocompatible as the resorbable IFP. The findings of this study suggest our newly developed adhesive has the potential to be used as a bone adhesive to affix bioresorbable IFPs.

Effects of different universal adhesives and surface treatments on repair bond strength between resin composites

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different universal adhesives and surface treatments on the repair bond strength between resin composites.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 220 composite samples were divided into three groups according to the adhesive resin to be applied: 1) Scotchbond Universal, 2) G-Premio Bond, and 3) Peak Universal Bond. They were then divided into seven subgroups according to surface treatments (n = 10): A) air abrasion, B) air abrasion+silane, C) hydrofluoric acid, D) hydrofluoric acid+silane, E) air abrasion+hydrofluoric acid+silane, F) silane, and G) no surface treatment (negative control). After surface treatment, a repair composite was applied. Samples aged in the thermocycle were subjected to micro-tensile bond strength testing. Cohesive strength values of 10 non-aged composite blocks were used as a positive control. Kruskal-Wallis and one-way ANOVA tests were used for statistical evaluation. Fractured surfaces were evaluated using a scanning electron microscope.

RESULTS

In Scotchbond Universal and G-Premio Bond, the mean micro-tensile bond strength value of the no surface treatment subgroup was significantly lower than that of the positive control. All subgroups of Peak Universal Bond showed similar values to the positive control.

CONCLUSION

While Scotchbond Universal and G-Premio Bond required mechanical roughening before adhesive application, Peak Universal Bond did not require any surface treatment.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Different universal adhesives may show different repair bonding strengths with different surface treatments. Since achieving a standard in this regard can be associated with many independent factors, clinicians should determine how to apply the adhesive they use most effectively with the most appropriate surface treatment based on their own clinical experience.

Effect of different types of adhesive systems on the bond strength and marginal integrity of composite restorations in cavities prepared with the erbium laser-a systematic review

There are inconclusive results regarding etching and bonding protocol to achieve optimal bond strength and marginal integrity of adhesive composite resin restorations in erbium laser prepared cavities. This systematic review aimed to consider which adhesive system protocol may be optimal in achieving the bond strength and marginal integrity in erbium laser-prepared cavities, comparable to that obtained with conventional method of cavity preparation. This review was developed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement with literature search based on all publications during the period January1, 2000-October 10, 2020, in three databases: MEDLINE, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. The necessary information was extracted by two independent authors. The search resulted in 139 articles from all databases, and a total of thirty-one articles met the inclusion criteria. The results indicated that the selection of adhesives depending on their pH and composition and the laser pulse duration and pulse energy used plays an important role in predicting the adhesion and marginal integrity. The 10-MDP containing moderate self-etch adhesives has demonstrated predictable outcomes. Longer pulse durations used for cavity preparations may indicate the use of etch-and-rinse (EnR) or moderate self-etch adhesives (SEA) to allow better resin infiltration in deep craters formed due to laser irradiation. However, further studies with more standardizations in relation to adhesives and laser parameters are needed.

Aging Methods-An Evaluation of Their Influence on Bond Strength

Objectives  To evaluate the effect of different artificial aging methods on the bond strength of a resin composite associated with a universal adhesive (Scotchbond Universal) used under two etching approaches (self-etch [SE] or etch-and-rinse [ER]) to enamel and dentin substrates.

Materials and Methods  A total of 96 noncarious human third molars were prepared and randomly divided according to three factors ( n = 6): substrate (enamel and dentin), adhesive approach (SE and ER), and aging method (water storage for 24 hours, 6 months, or 1 year; subjected to 10,000, 20,000, or 30,000 thermal cycles; and sodium hypochlorite [NaOCl] storage for 1 or 5 hours).

Statistical Analysis  Microshear bond strength tests were conducted, and the collected data (MPa) were subjected to three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Bonferroni tests ( p < 0.05) and Weibull analysis. The failure pattern was also evaluated.

Results  Three-way ANOVA revealed that the factors “substrate” ( p = 0.00) and “aging method” ( p = 0.00) had a significant effect on the bond strength, but the factor “adhesive approach” did not ( p = 0.84). The bond strength in the enamel group for the SE approach was negatively affected under 20,000 and 30,000 thermal cycles. Weibull presented the highest m in the NaOCl storage for the 5 hours group to enamel using the SE and to dentin using ER approaches. Adhesive/mixed failures were predominant for all groups.

Conclusion  Thermocycling aging (20,000 and 30,000 cycles) significantly reduced the bond strength to enamel using the SE approach. On the contrary, storage with the NaOCl method proved to increase bond strength under the evaluated conditions.

Effect of air-blowing temperature and water storage time on the bond strength of five universal adhesive systems to dentin

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the air-blowing temperature and water storage time on the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of five universal adhesive systems to dentin. The bond strength with two different air-blowing temperatures (60±2ºC and 23±2ºC) was measured after water storage at 37ºC for 24 h and 100 days respectively. The fracture surface on dentin side was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Three-way ANOVA revealed a significant effect of universal system (p<0.001) and air-blowing temperature (p<0.001) on bond strength to dentin except water-storage time (p=0.145). The interaction within three factors was significantly different (p<0.001). It could be concluded that the μTBS of universal systems to dentin was material-depended. The higher and more stable bonding performance of universal systems on dentin could be achieved by air-blowing at 60±2ºC temperature. In addition, the quantity of voids in the adhesive layer of aceton-based universal adhesive was significantly reduced by higher temperature.

Shear Strength of Brackets Bonded with Universal Adhesive Containing 10-MDP after 20,000 Thermal Cycles

Objectives

The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of metal brackets bonded with different universal adhesive systems containing 10-MDP and Transbond Plus Self Etching Primer after 20,000 thermal cycles. Materials and Methods. A total of 130 sound bovine teeth were used, which are divided into 5 groups (n = 26) according to the adhesive system used: All-Bond Universal (Bisco), Ambar Universal (FGM), Clearfil Universal Bond (Kuraray), Single Bond Universal (3M/ESPE), and Transbond Plus SEP (3M/ESPE) as control. The adhesives were applied for 20 seconds and bonded with a resin Transbond XT (3M/ESPE). After this, the teeth were submitted to 20,000 cycles at 5°C and 55°C. Afterwards, the shear bond strength test was performed in a universal test machine (Instron 3342). The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was evaluated under a stereomicroscope at 10x magnification and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM, Hitachi 3030). The shear bond strength data were submitted to One-Way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and the ARI to the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05) and the ARI to the Kruskal-Wallis test (.

Results

Statistical analysis showed that the universal adhesive systems presented mean shear bond strength values similar to Transbond Plus SEP (p < 0.05). The universal adhesive presented similar ARI values among them but differed from those of Transbond Plus SEP (p < 0.05). Conclusions

The results show that universal adhesive systems may be used for bonding metal brackets if the orthodontist wants to maintain dental enamel health.

SEM observation of novel characteristic of the dentin bond interfaces of universal adhesives

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to observe the resin/dentin interfaces of universal adhesives by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and to compare their morphologies with conventional etch & rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) adhesive systems.

METHODS

Two three-step and one two-step ER adhesives and two two-step and two single-step SE adhesives were used for comparison with seven universal adhesives in ER mode and SE mode, respectively. Bonded surfaces with bovine teeth were longitudinally sectioned and mirror-polished. Half of the samples were treated with HCl and NaOCl solutions. The interfaces were subjected to argon ion beam etching and then observed by scanning electron microscopy.

RESULTS

The thickness of the adhesive layer (AL) of most of the seven universal adhesives and single-step SE adhesives was similar. Universal adhesives in SE mode formed a hybrid smear layer as a high-density zone between the AL and dentin. The thickness of the hybrid layer (HL) of the universal adhesives in ER mode was ∼1-2μm, with a high-density zone (reaction layer [RL]) below the HL.

CONCLUSION

The morphological features of most universal adhesives in SE mode and single-step SE adhesives are similar. Although resin-dentin interfaces of universal adhesives in ER mode resemble those of ER adhesives, universal adhesives have a distinctive feature, an RL.

SIGNIFICANCE

The RL might be a sign of chemical bonding even when using universal adhesives in ER mode.

10-MDP Based Dental Adhesives: Adhesive Interface Characterization and Adhesive Stability-A Systematic Review

The incorporation of functional monomers in dental adhesive systems promotes chemical interaction with dental substrates, resulting in higher adhesion forces when compared to micromechanical adhesion only. The 10-MDP monomer, whose chemical structure allows for a polar behavior which is favorable to adhesion, also promotes the protection of collagen fibers through the formation of MDP-calcium salts. This systematic review aimed to characterize the interface created by 10-MDP containing adhesive systems through an evaluation of the following parameters: Formation of nano-layered structures, capacity to produce an acid-base resistant zone, and adhesion stability. The research was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase, limited to English, Spanish, and Portuguese articles. The research was done according to the PICO strategy. The 10-MDP monomer has the capacity to produce an acid-base resistant zone on the adhesive interface, which increases the response to acid-base challenges. The adhesion established by these systems is stable over time. To have the best of these adhesive solutions, a scrubbing technique must be used to apply the adhesive system on dental substrates, in order to improve monomers infiltration and to create a stable bond. Time must be given for the solution to infiltrate, hybridize and form the MDP-Ca, improving adhesive stability.

Influence of Er:YAG laser pulse duration on the long-term stability of organic matrix and resin-dentin interface

The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of Er:YAG laser irradiation with different pulse durations on the organic matrix, micromorphology of the hybrid layer (HL), and bond strength over time. Sixty caries-free human molars were cut to obtain flat dentin surfaces which were randomly divided into 4 groups: control (not irradiated-G1) and laser groups (80 mJ/2 Hz) with pulse duration ranging between 50 (G2), 300 (G3), and 600 μs (G4). A self-etch adhesive system (Universal 3M ESPE) was applied on pre-treated dentin surfaces and cylinders of resin composite were built up and stressed in a universal testing machine (μSBS) at 24 h and after12 months (n = 12). In addition, 3 other dentin-bonded specimens were prepared as previously described for each group with the adhesive doped with 0.1 wt% Rhodamine B to analyze hybrid layer morphology under Confocal Laser Microscope Scanning (CLMS). Organic matrix and collagen fibrils were analyzed by second harmonic generation (SGH). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test detected significantly higher μSBS values for the control group, whereas the lower values were observed in all laser groups at 24 h (p < 0.05). Storage in artificial saliva did not reduce μSBS in all groups. The low signal emitted by SHG images below the irradiated area demonstrated thermal damage of the collagen matrix. CLMS images of laser groups exhibited thicker and irregular resin-dentin interfaces than the control group. Regardless of the pulse duration, Er:YAG laser pre-treatment altered the organic matrix and HL formation which resulted in low μSBS values at 24 h. The alterations on dentin's organic structure did not jeopardize the μSBS after 1 year of saliva storage.

Composite-composite Adhesion as a Function of Adhesive-composite Material and Surface Treatment

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the composite-to-composite repair interfacial fracture toughness (iFT) as a function of adhesive and composite repair material.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Beam-shaped composite specimens (21×4×3±0.2 mm) were prepared for each substrate material (Filtek Supreme Ultra [FSU] or Clearfil Majesty ES-2 [CME]) and artificially aged for 50,000 thermocycles (5-55°C, 20-second dwell time). Aged specimens were sectioned in half, and the resulting hemispecimens were randomly assigned to one of the different repair methods (n=10) based on the following variables: type of substrate composite (FSU or CME), acid etch (yes or no), adhesive type (Scotchbond Universal or Clearfil SE Bond 2), and type of repair composite (FSU or CME). The repair surface was prepared with a course diamond bur (Midwest #471271). When used, 37% phosphoric acid was applied for 20 seconds, rinsed, and dried. All adhesives and composites were applied according to manufacturers' instructions. After postrepair storage (100% humidity, 37°C, 24 hours), iFT was measured and expressed as MPa. Data were analyzed for statistical significance using a three-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc tests (α=0.05).

RESULTS

iFT values ranged from 0.64 ± 0.19 MPa to 1.28 ± 013 MPa. Significantly higher iFT values were achieved when FSU was used as the repair composite resin regardless of the substrate composite resin (p<0.001). Clearfil SE Bond 2 adhesive was associated with significantly higher iFT values for FSU substrate (p<0.001). The etching procedure had no significant effect on the iFT values of the repair procedures (p>0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Composite repair strength is adhesive and composite dependent. Repair strength appears to be higher when FSU is the repair composite regardless of the adhesive used.

Etching Efficacy of Self-Etching Functional Monomers

Besides chemically interacting with hard tooth tissue, acidic functional monomers of self-etch adhesives should etch the prepared tooth surface to dissolve the smear layer and to provide surface micro-retention. Although the etching efficacy of functional monomers is commonly determined in terms of pH, the pH of adhesives cannot accurately be measured. Better is to measure the hydroxyapatite (HAp)-dissolving capacity, also considering that functional monomers may form monomer-Ca salts. Here, the etching efficacy of 6 functional monomers (GPDM, phenyl-P, MTEGP, 4-META, 6-MHP and 10-MDP) was investigated. Solutions containing 15 wt% monomer, 45 wt% ethanol, and 40 wt% water were prepared. Initially, we observed enamel surfaces exposed to monomer solution by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to detect monomer-Ca salt formation. Phenyl-P exhibited a strong etching effect, while 10-MDP-treated enamel showed substance deposition, which was identified by XRD as 10-MDP-Ca salt. To confirm these SEM/XRD findings, we determined the etching efficacy of functional monomers by measuring both the concentration of Ca released from HAp using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and the amount of monomer-Ca salt formation using ³¹P magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). ICP-AES revealed that the highest Ca concentration was produced by phenyl-P and the lowest Ca concentration, almost equally, by 4-META and 10-MDP. Only 10-MDP formed 10-MDP-Ca salts, indicating that 10-MDP released more Ca from HAp than was measured by ICP-AES. Part of the released Ca was consumed to form 10-MDP-Ca salts. It is concluded that the repeatedly reported higher bonding effectiveness of 10-MDP-based adhesives must not only be attributed to the more intense chemical bonding of 10-MDP but also to its higher etching potential, a combination the other functional monomers investigated lack.

Bond durability of universal adhesive to bovine enamel using self-etch mode

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to examine the enamel bond durability of universal adhesives in the self-etch mode under 2-year water storage and thermal cycling conditions.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three commercially available universal adhesives and a gold standard two-step self-etch adhesive were used. Ten specimens of bovine enamel were prepared per test group, and shear bond strength (SBS) was measured to determine the bonding durability after thermal cycling (TC) or long-term water storage (WS). The bonded specimens were divided into three groups: (1) specimens subjected to TC, where the bonded specimens were stored in 37 °C distilled water for 24 h before being subjected to 3000, 10,000, 20,000 or 30,000 TC; (2) specimens stored in 37 °C distilled water for 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 2 year; and (3) specimens stored in 37 °C distilled water for 24 h, serving as a baseline.

RESULTS

The two-step self-etch adhesive showed significantly higher SBS than the universal adhesives tested, regardless of the type of degradation method. All universal adhesives showed no significant enamel SBS reductions in TC and WS, when compared to baseline and the other degradation conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared to the bond strengths obtained with the two-step self-etch adhesive, significantly lower bond strengths were obtained with universal adhesives. However, the enamel bond durability of universal adhesives was relatively stable under both degradation conditions tested.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The present data indicate that the enamel bond durability of universal adhesives in the self-etch mode might be sufficient for clinical use.

Influence of application method on surface free-energy and bond strength of universal adhesive systems to enamel

The aim of the present study was to determine the influence of different adhesive application methods and etching modes on enamel bond effectiveness of universal adhesives using shear bond strength (SBS) testing and surface free-energy (SFE) measurements. The adhesives Scotchbond Universal, All-Bond Universal, Adhese Universal, and G-Premio Bond were used. Prepared bovine enamel specimens were divided into four groups, based on type of adhesive, and subjected to the following surface treatments: (i) total-etch mode with active application; (ii) total-etch mode with inactive application; (iii) self-etch mode with active application; and (iv) self-etch mode with inactive application. Bonded specimens were subjected to SBS testing. The SFE of the enamel surfaces with adhesive was measured after rinsing with acetone and water. The SBS values in total-etch mode were significantly higher than those in self-etch mode. In total-etch mode, significantly lower SBS values were observed with active application compared with inactive application; in contrast, in self-etch mode there were no significant differences in SBS between active and inactive applications. A reduction in total SFE was observed for active application compared with inactive application. The interaction between etching mode and application method was statistically significant, and the application method significantly affected enamel bond strength in total-etch mode.

The effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation on the bond stability of self-etch adhesives at different dentin depths

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Er:YAG laser irradiation on the micro-shear bond strength of self-etch adhesives to the superficial dentin and the deep dentin before and after thermocycling. Superficial dentin and deep dentin surfaces were prepared by flattening of the occlusal surfaces of extracted human third molars. The deep or superficial dentin specimens were randomized into three groups according to the following surface treatments: group I (control group), group II (Er:YAG laser; 1.2 W), and group III (Er:YAG laser; 0.5 W). Clearfil SE Bond or Clearfil S³ Bond was applied to each group’s dentin surfaces. After construction of the composite blocks on the dentin surface, the micro-shear bond testing of each adhesive was performed at 24 h or after 15,000 thermal cycles. The data were analyzed using a univariate analysis of variance and Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). Laser irradiation in superficial dentin did not significantly affect bond strength after thermocycling (p > 0.05). However, deep-dentin specimens irradiated with laser showed significantly higher bond strengths than did control specimens after thermocycling (p < 0.05). Thermocycling led to significant deterioration in the bond strengths of all deep-dentin groups. The stable bond strength after thermocycling was measured for all of the superficial-dentin groups. No significant difference was found between the 0.5 and 1.2 W output power settings. In conclusion, the effect of laser irradiation on the bond strength of self-etch adhesives may be altered by the dentin depth. Regardless of the applied surface treatment, deep dentin showed significant bond degradation.

Bonding performance of universal adhesives to er,cr:YSGG laser-irradiated enamel

Universal adhesives have been recently introduced for use as self-etch or etch-and-rinse adhesives depending on the dental substrate and clinical condition. However, their bonding effectiveness to laser-irradiated enamel is still not well-known. Thus, the aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of universal adhesives (Single Bond Universal; Nova Compo-B Plus) applied to Er,Cr:YSGG laser-irradiated enamel with SBS of the same adhesives applied in self-etch and acid-etching modes, respectively. Crown segments of sixty bovine incisors were embedded into standardized acrylic blocks. Flattened enamel surfaces were prepared. Specimens were divided into six groups according to universal adhesives and application modes randomly (n = 10), as follows: Single Bond Universal/acid-etching mode; Nova Compo-B Plus/acid-etching mode; Single Bond Universal/self-etching mode; Nova Compo-B Plus/self-etching mode; and Single Bond Universal/Er,Cr:YSGG Laser-etching mode; Nova Compo-B Plus/Er,Cr:YSGG Laser-etching mode. After surface treatments, universal adhesives were applied onto surfaces. SBS was determined after storage in water for 24 h using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm min^-1 . Failure modes were evaluated using a stereomicroscope. Data was analyzed using two-way of analyses of variances (ANOVA) (p = 0.05). Two-way ANOVA revealed that adhesive had no effect on SBS (p = 0.88), but application mode significantly influenced SBS (p = 0.00). Acid-etching significantly increased SBS, whereas there are no significant differences between self-etch mode and laser-etching for both adhesives. The bond strength of universal adhesives may depend on application mode. Acid etching may significantly increase bond strength, while laser etching may provide similar bond strength when compared to self-etch mode.
