Effect of infrared and red monochromatic light on equine wound healing

The effect of solarium light therapy on selected biological and biochemical parameters of peripheral blood in young and old horses

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of solarium light therapy on selected biological and biochemical parameters of peripheral blood in recreational horses. The study involved 10 horses divided into two groups of young (aged 5 to 7 years) and old (aged 14 to 19 years) individuals. All animals participated in light therapy sessions every other day. Blood was sampled three times during the study: before the treatment, after five light sessions, and after ten light sessions. Morphological parameters, the activity of antioxidant enzymes, TAS values, and the levels of glutathione (GSH), vitamin D3, vitamin C, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the whole blood. Light therapy contributed to an increase in MCV, HDW, MCVr, CHr and MPV indices, and simultaneously a decrease in the basophil counts, MCHC, RDW and CHCMr indices in both groups of horses (p ≤ 0.05). At the same time reticulocytes fell in older whereas white blood cells and monocytes counts expanded in younger individuals. The treatment also increased the activity of glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in young but decreased the activity of mentioned enzymes in blood plasma of old horses. The total antioxidant status (TAS) of the blood plasma rose progressively, whereas GSH levels declined in all individuals. Moreover, vitamin D3 levels did not change, whereas vitamin C levels gradually decreased during the experiment. The therapy also helped to reduce levels of MDA in the blood plasma, especially of older horses (p ≤ 0.05). In turn, GPx and GR activities as well as MDA levels significantly declined, whereas GSH levels notably elevated in erythrocytes (p ≤ 0.05). Solarium light therapy appears to have a beneficial impact on the morphological parameters and antioxidant status of blood in recreational horses in the winter season. However, the observed results could in part be attributed to the natural physiological adaptation of each individual organism to the treatment.

The Best Protocol to Treat Equine Skin Wounds by Second Intention Healing: A Scoping Review of the Literature

Equine skin wound treatment continues to be a challenge for veterinarians. Despite being a frequent practice, it remains difficult to choose an evidence-based treatment protocol. This study aimed to comprehensively explore the literature and provide a scoping review of therapeutic strategies for equine skin wounds and identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research. This review was conducted using specific criteria to select literature that described methods to manage second intention wound healing. After removing duplicates and screening papers for suitability, 81 manuscripts were included for data extraction. Of these, 59 articles were experimental studies, 10 were case reports, 9 were case series, and 3 were clinical studies. The most frequent wound location was the distal limbs. Macroscopic assessment was the main tool used to evaluate treatment effectiveness. All of the case reports, case series, and clinical studies reported positive outcomes with regard to the treatment used, while only 36% of the experimental studies found significant healing improvement in treated wounds compared to control groups. It was found that there are many treatments that have exhibited controversial results, and there exists a lack of evidence for the adoption of specific treatment protocols.

Efficacy of lidocaine wet compress combined with red-light irradiation for chronic wounds

BACKGROUND

Chronic wounds that fail to progress through normal phases of healing present a significant healthcare burden owing to prolonged treatment and associated costs. Traditional wound care typically involves regular dressing changes, which can be painful. Recent approaches have explored the use of lidocaine to manage pain and red-light irradiation (RLI), known for its anti-inflammatory and cell proliferation effects, to potentially enhance wound healing.

AIM

To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of lidocaine wet compression (LWC) combined with RLI for chronic wounds.

METHODS

We enrolled 150 patients with chronic wounds from the Wound and Ostomy Outpatient Clinic of the Second Hospital of Anhui Medical University from April to September 2022. The wounds were treated with dressing changes. The patients were randomly assigned to the control and experimental groups using a random number table and given the same first dressing change (2% LWC for 5 min and routine dressing change). From the second dressing change, in addition to 2% LWC for 5 min and routine dressing change, the experimental group received RLI, whereas the control group continued to receive the same LWC and dressing change. The first and second dressing changes were performed on days 1 and 2, respectively. The third dressing change was performed 3 d after the second change. The frequency of subsequent dressing changes was determined based on wound exudation and pain. Pain during the first three dressing changes was evaluated in both groups. The average number of dressing changes within 28 d and the degree of wound healing on day 28 were also recorded.

RESULTS

During the initial dressing change, no noticeable differences were observed in the pain levels experienced by the two groups, indicating similar pain tolerance. However, during the second and third dressing changes, the experimental group reported significantly less pain than the control group. Furthermore, over 28 d, the experimental group required fewer dressing changes than the control group.

CONCLUSION

Notably, the effectiveness of wound healing on the 28th day was significantly higher in the experimental group than that of in the control group. The combination of LWC and RLI was effective in reducing early-stage pain, promoting wound healing, decreasing the frequency of dressing changes, and enhancing patients' overall quality of life with chronic wounds.

Assessment of wound area reduction on chronic wounds in dogs with photobiomodulation therapy: A randomized controlled clinical trial

Background and Aim

Chronic wounds are a clinical problem and require intensive standard wound care. However, this is sometimes insufficient to promote healing. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) can be used as an adjunctive therapy to improve wound healing. Various PBMT devices with different properties and parameter settings as well as different animal species can influence a variety of clinical outcomes. This study aims to assess the use of 830 nm PBMT or simultaneous superpulsed and multiple wavelengths (SPMW; 660, 875, and 905 nm) PBMT on chronic wounds in client-owned dogs.

Materials and Methods

This study included 21 client-owned dogs with chronic wounds allocated into three groups: (1) Control group (C) treated with irrigated saline and without PBMT (n=7); (2) L1 group treated with irrigated saline together with the radiation of 830 nm PBMT (n=7); and (3) L2 group treated with irrigated saline together with the radiation of simultaneous SPMW-PBMT (n=7). Wound healing was assessed on the basis of wound size reduction as a percentage of wound area every 2^nd day for 15 days using image analysis software (ImageJ software^®, National Institutes of Health, Rockville, Maryland, USA).

Results

A significant difference in the percentage of wound area reduction was noted between the C and PBMT groups (L1 and L2; p<0.05). The average percentages of wound area reduction at the end of the study (15 days) were 42.39±20.58, 56.98±24.82, and 61.81±27.18 in the C, L1, and L2 groups, respectively. A steady decrease in wound size was noted in both PBMT and non-PBMT groups, and coefficients were 7.77, 8.95, and 10.01 in the C, L1, and L2 groups, respectively. The percentage of wound area reduction was found to be significantly different between the PBMT and non-BPMT groups on day 7 (p<0.05).

Conclusion

Based on the results of the current study, using either 830 nm PBMT or simultaneous SPMW-PBMT can accelerate the chronic wound healing process in dogs with a significant reduction in wound area. Therefore, it can be used as an adjunctive therapy to improve wound healing in dogs with reduced treatment duration.
