Ecosystem response to earlier ice break-up date: Climate-driven changes to water temperature, lake-habitat-specific production, and trout habitat and resource use

Anticipating responses to climate change and planning for resilience in California's freshwater ecosystems

As human-caused climate changes accelerate, California will experience hydrologic and temperature conditions different than any encountered in recorded history. How will these changes affect the state's freshwater ecosystems? Rivers, lakes, and wetlands are managed as a water resource, but they also support a complex web of life, ranging from bacteria, fungi, and algae to macrophytes, woody plants, invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. In much of the state, native freshwater organisms already struggle to survive massive water diversions and dams, deteriorating water quality, extensive land cover modification for agriculture and urban development, and invasions of exotic species. In the face of climate change, we need to expand efforts to recover degraded ecosystems and to protect the resilience, health, and viability of existing ecosystems. For this, more process-based understanding of river, lake, and wetlands ecosystems is needed to forecast how systems will respond to future climate change and to our interventions. This will require 1) expanding our ability to model mechanistically how freshwater biota and ecosystems respond to environmental change; 2) hypothesis-driven monitoring and field studies; 3) education and training to build research, practitioner, stewardship, and policy capabilities; and 4) developing tools and policies for building resilient ecosystems. A goals-driven, hypothesis-informed collaboration among tribes, state (and federal) agencies, nongovernmental organizations, academicians, and consultants is needed to accomplish these goals and to advance the skills and knowledge of the future workforce of practitioners, regulators, and researchers who must live with the climate changes that are already upon us and will intensify.

Local variation in the timing and advancement of lake ice breakup and impacts on settling dynamics in a migratory waterbird

Timing of ice-out is important to fundamental hydrological and ecological processes in freshwater ecosystems at high northern latitudes. While earlier ice-out in lakes during the last century is a well-documented phenomenon across the Northern Hemisphere, local variation in the rate of advancement of ice-out has received little attention. Here, records of ice-out date in 1991-2020 from 37 small lakes in a boreal catchment area in southeastern Finland were used to study variation in the timing of ice-out and its advancement. In addition, data of settling phenology of migratory common goldeneyes (Bucephala clangula) at the study lakes were used to examine how between-year and within-season variation in the timing of ice-out affects lake settlement of the species. Overall, ice-out date (IOD, the timing of ice break-up in the spring) advanced 9.8 days during the 30-year study period, April temperature being more important than winter temperature (severity) in determining the IOD. Rate of the advancement of IOD in individual lakes varied from 1.5 to 16.1 days, having advanced more in relatively larger lakes. Lakes at higher elevations had later mean IOD than lakes at lower elevations. Within-season differences among the lakes in IOD increased from 1991 to 2020, this variation being mainly driven by temperature during the ice melting period. Lakes with late mean IOD were settled later in a season by breeding common goldeneyes than lakes with early IOD. The faster the ice melting progressed within a season, the faster common goldeneyes settled the breeding lakes. The results demonstrate how global warming differently affects IOD in boreal lakes even within the same catchment area. More research in the landscape context is needed to enhance our understanding of changes in IOD in boreal lakes and how differently advancing IOD affects local dynamics of species dependent on open water.

Smoke from regional wildfires alters lake ecology

Wildfire smoke often covers areas larger than the burned area, yet the impacts of smoke on nearby aquatic ecosystems are understudied. In the summer of 2018, wildfire smoke covered Castle Lake (California, USA) for 55 days. We quantified the influence of smoke on the lake by comparing the physics, chemistry, productivity, and animal ecology in the prior four years (2014-2017) to the smoke year (2018). Smoke reduced incident ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation by 31% and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by 11%. Similarly, underwater UV-B and PAR decreased by 65 and 44%, respectively, and lake heat content decreased by 7%. While the nutrient limitation of primary production did not change, shallow production in the offshore habitat increased by 109%, likely due to a release from photoinhibition. In contrast, deep-water, primary production decreased and the deep-water peak in chlorophyll a did not develop, likely due to reduced PAR. Despite the structural changes in primary production, light, and temperature, we observed little significant change in zooplankton biomass, community composition, or migration pattern. Trout were absent from the littoral-benthic habitat during the smoke period. The duration and intensity of smoke influences light regimes, heat content, and productivity, with differing responses to consumers.
