Synergistic effects of warming and eutrophication alert zooplankton predator-prey interactions along the benthic-pelagic interface

Functional trait-based phytoplankton biomass and assemblage analyses in the pre-growing season for comprehensive algal bloom risk assessment

Algal bloom (AB) risk assessment is critical for maintaining ecosystem health and human sustainability. Previous AB risk assessments have focused on the potential occurrence of ABs and related factors in the growing season, whereas their hazards, especially in the pre-growing season, have attracted less attention. Here, we performed a comprehensive AB risk assessment, including water trophic levels, phytoplankton biomass, functional trait-based assemblages, and related environmental factors, in the pre-growing season in Dongting Lake, China. Although mesotrophic water and low phytoplankton biomass suggested low AB potential, toxic taxa, which constituted 13.28% of the phytoplankton biomass, indicated non-negligible AB hazards. NH4+ and water temperature were key factors affecting phytoplankton motility and toxicity. Our study establishes a new paradigm for quantitative AB risk assessment, including both potential AB occurrence and hazards. We emphasize the importance of phytoplankton functional traits for early AB warning and NH4+ reduction for AB control in the pre-growing season.

Responses of Protozoan Communities to Multiple Environmental Stresses (Warming, Eutrophication, and Pesticide Pollution)

To explore the impacts of multiple environmental stressors on animal communities in aquatic ecosystems, we selected protozoa-a highly sensitive group of organisms-to assess the effect of environmental change. To conduct this simulation we conducted a three-factor, outdoor, mesocosm experiment from March to November 2021. Changes in the community structure and functional group composition of protozoan communities under the separate and combined effects of these three environmental stressors were investigated by warming and the addition of nitrogen, phosphorus, and pesticides. The results were as follows: (1) Both eutrophication and pesticides had a considerable promotional effect on the abundance and biomass of protozoa; the effect of warming was not considerable. When warming was combined with eutrophication and pesticides, there was a synergistic effect and antagonistic effect, respectively. (2) Eutrophication promoted α diversity of protozoa and affected their species richness and dominant species composition; the combination of warming and pesticides remarkably reduced the α diversity of protozoa. (3) Warming, eutrophication, and pesticides were important factors affecting the functional groups of protozoa. Interaction among different environmental factors could complicate changes in the aquatic ecological environment and its protozoan communities. Indeed, in the context of climate change, it might be more difficult to predict future trends in the protozoan community. Therefore, our results provide a scientific basis for the protection and restoration of shallow lake ecosystems; they also offer valuable insights in predicting changes in shallow lakes.

Hypoxia and salinity constrain the sediment microbiota-mediated N removal potential in an estuary: A multi-trophic interrelationship perspective

Reactive nitrogen (N) enrichment is a common environmental problem in estuarine ecosystems, while the microbial-mediated N removal process is complicated for other multi-environmental factors. Therefore, A systematic investigation is necessary to understand the multi-trophic microbiota-mediated N removal characteristics under various environmental factors in estuaries. Here, we studied how multiple factors affect the multi-trophic microbiota-mediated N removal potential (denitrification and anammox) and N2O emission along a river-estuary-bay continuum in southeastern China using the environmental DNA (eDNA) approach. Results suggested that hypoxia and salinity were the dominant environmental factors affecting multi-trophic microbiota-mediated N removal in the estuary. The synergistic effect of hypoxia and salinity contributed to the loss of taxonomic (MultiTaxa) and phylogenetic (MultiPhyl) diversity across multi-trophic microbiota and enhanced the interdependence among multi-trophic microbiota in the estuary. The N removal potential calculated as the activities of key N removal enzymes was also significantly constrained in the estuary (0.011), compared with the river (0.257) and bay (0.461). Structural equation modeling illustrated that metazoans were central to all sediment N removal potential regulatory pathways. The top-down forces (predation by metazoans) restrained the growth of heterotrophic bacteria, which may affect microbial N removal processes in the sediment. Furthermore, we found that the hypoxia and salinity exacerbated the N2O emission in the estuary. This study clarifies that hypoxia and salinity constrain estuarine multi-trophic microbiota-mediated N removal potential and highlights the important role of multi-trophic interactions in estuarine N removal, providing a new perspective on mitigating estuarine N accumulation.

Chemodiversity of Cyanobacterial Toxins Driven by Future Scenarios of Climate Warming and Eutrophication

Climate change and eutrophication are two environmental threats that can alter the structure of freshwater ecosystems and their service functions, but we know little about how ecosystem structure and function will evolve in future scenarios of climate warming. Therefore, we created different experimental climate scenarios, including present-day conditions, a 3.0 °C increase in mean temperature, and a "heatwaves" scenario (i.e., an increase in temperature variability) to assess the effects of climate change on phytoplankton communities under simultaneous stress from eutrophication and herbicides. We show that the effects of climate warming, particularly heatwaves, are associated with elevated cyanobacterial abundances and toxin production, driven by a change from mainly nontoxic to toxic Microcystis spp. The reason for higher cyanobacterial toxin concentrations is likely an increase in abundances because under the dual pressures of climate warming and eutrophication individual Microcystis toxin-producing ability decreased. Eutrophication and higher temperatures significantly increased the biomass of Microcystis, leading to an increase in the cyanobacterial toxin concentrations. In contrast, warming alone did not produce higher cyanobacterial abundances or cyanobacterial toxin concentrations likely due to the depletion of the available nutrient pool. Similarly, the herbicide glyphosate alone did not affect abundances of any phytoplankton taxa. In the case of nutrient enrichment, cyanobacterial toxin concentrations were much higher than under warming alone due to a strong boost in biomass of potential cyanobacterial toxin producers. From a broader perspective our study shows that in a future warmer climate, nutrient loading has to be reduced if toxic cyanobacterial dominance is to be controlled.

Current and lagged climate affects phenology across diverse taxonomic groups

The timing of life events (phenology) can be influenced by climate. Studies from around the world tell us that climate cues and species' responses can vary greatly. If variation in climate effects on phenology is strong within a single ecosystem, climate change could lead to ecological disruption, but detailed data from diverse taxa within a single ecosystem are rare. We collated first sighting and median activity within a high-elevation environment for plants, insects, birds, mammals and an amphibian across 45 years (1975-2020). We related 10 812 phenological events to climate data to determine the relative importance of climate effects on species' phenologies. We demonstrate significant variation in climate-phenology linkage across taxa in a single ecosystem. Both current and prior climate predicted changes in phenology. Taxa responded to some cues similarly, such as snowmelt date and spring temperatures; other cues affected phenology differently. For example, prior summer precipitation had no effect on most plants, delayed first activity of some insects, but advanced activity of the amphibian, some mammals, and birds. Comparing phenological responses of taxa at a single location, we find that important cues often differ among taxa, suggesting that changes to climate may disrupt synchrony of timing among taxa.

Warming and phosphorus enrichment alter the size structure and body stoichiometry of aquatic gastropods

Aquatic gastropods are important integral components of the macroinvertebrate community in freshwater ecosystems and play critical roles in freshwater ecosystems by contributing to biodiversity, nutrient cycling, and water quality. However, the variation of aquatic gastropods’ community structure under the combined effects of warming and nutrient enrichment remains largely unknown. To investigate this question, we performed an outdoor mesocosm experiment examining the interaction of warming (a 4.5 °C increase in mean temperature above ambient conditions) and nutrient enrichment (phosphorus addition) on the aquatic gastropods’ community and dominant population (Bellamya aeruginosa). We analyzed the changes in community dynamics (abundance and biomass), size structure, and stoichiometric traits (only B. aeruginosa). Results showed that phosphorus enrichment alone had a positive effect on the total abundance and biomass of gastropods, as well as the abundance and biomass of B. aeruginosa. Warming alone only produced a positive effect on total abundance. However, the combined effects of warming and phosphorus enrichment negatively affected the biomass and abundance of the whole gastropod community and the dominant gastropod population. The body mass of B. aeruginosa increased because of warming, whereas the body mass of the gastropod community negatively responded to warming. Phosphorus enrichment alone had no remarkable effects on body mass. The combined effects of warming and phosphorus enrichment negatively affected the whole community’s body mass but had no substantial effect on the body mass of B. aeruginosa. For body stoichiometric traits, warming or phosphorus enrichment alone produced positive effects on the nitrogen and phosphorus contents of B. aeruginosa. The combined effects caused adverse effects on the contents of the two elements. The effect of warming alone only decreased the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus. Results suggested that the response levels in size structure between the gastropod community and the dominant population differed remarkably. Composition species shift was the main cause of the decrease in aquatic gastropods’ community size structure. The shift in species composition at the whole gastropod community level caused by warming and phosphorus enrichment may result in more complex and unpredicted consequences through cascade effects on the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems.

Impacts of nutrient reduction on temporal β-diversity of rotifers: A 19-year limnology case study on Lake Wuli, China

There have been many studies on the effects of eutrophication on beta diversity (β-diversity) of species assemblages. However, few studies have focused on the effects of nutrient reduction on β-diversity and community structure, and long-time series analyses are particularly scarce. We conducted a 19-year case study on the impacts of management intervention on the temporal β-diversity of aquatic grazers in a lake at the Yangtze River Basin. In our study, we compared the changes in temporal β-diversity as well as its two components, nestedness and turnover, and the synchrony of the rotifer community after management intervention. Our results showed that while the abundance of some sensitive species increased, there was no trend in species richness. Moreover, both the seasonality and interannual stabilities of rotifer assemblages increased. The species synchrony decreased in both spring and summer after management intervention. We also found that management intervention significantly reduced nutrient concentrations but not water clarity and phytoplankton abundance. The total nitrogen (TN): total phosphorous (TP) ratio was reduced after management intervention, causing an increase in the abundance of cyanobacteria that may contribute to the increase of rotifer synchrony in autumn. Our results imply that stable environmental fluctuations after management intervention may increase temporal β-diversity and stability of herbivorous assemblages. However, imbalanced changes in TN and TP after management intervention may weaken the top-down control of zooplankton on phytoplankton and slow down water clarity improvement.
