The relationship of self-compassion and hope with quality of life for individuals with bleeding disorders

The Relationship Between Psychosocial Behavior and the Quality of Life of Male Gout Patients in Southwest China: A Cross-Sectional Study Based on an Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills Model

Purpose

Gout is more severe in men, leading to a poor quality of life. Previous studies did not sufficiently pay attention to the quality of life and related factors in gout patients in Southwest China. This study aimed to investigate the quality of life of men with gout in Southwest China and explore the relationship between psychosocial factors and health-related quality of life from the perspective of an information-motivation-behavioral skill model.

Patients and Methods

This was a cross-sectional study conducted in the West China Hospital of Sichuan University located in Southwest China. In total, 230 male patients with gout were enrolled. The health-related quality of life of patients was assessed using the gout impact scale. The gout knowledge questionnaire was used to assess patients' information. The positive psycap questionnaire was used to assess motivation. The gout patients' self-management assessment scale was used to assess behavioral skills. Multiple linear regression was used to identify the factors associated with the health-related quality of life of patients.

Results

The overall mean gout impact scale score was 52.7±15.3 (maximum possible = 100). Factors associated with the total gout impact scale score were tophi (β=0.138, P=0.050), pain (β=0.255, P<0.001), and resiliency (β=-0.282, P<0.001). In addition, demographic characteristics (educational level, smoking and marital status), clinical characteristics (tophi, pain, number of attacks over half a year, and number of affected joints) and psychosocial behavior variables (resiliency, hope, disease treatment management, diet management) were associated with several dimensions of the gout impact scale.

Conclusion

The health-related quality of life of male patients with gout in Southwest China was at a medium level. We found that demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, and psychosocial factors were associated with health-related quality of life of patients with gout. These findings can be used as a reference to improve health-related quality of life of patients with gout.

Head and neck lymphedema and quality of life: the patient perspective

PURPOSE

Head and neck lymphedema (HNL) is common after head and neck cancer (HNC). This study aimed to explore quality of life (QoL) in patients with HNL to guide the development of a patient-reported QoL measure.

METHODS

We conducted semi-structured interviews with 22 HNC survivors with HNL. Interviews explored participants' experiences of living with HNL. Analysis of interview transcripts drew on qualitative content analysis to ensure themes were grounded in patient experience.

RESULTS

Two main themes were established: "I want to live my life" and "It was like things were short-circuited." These themes encompassed the substantial disruption patients attributed to the HNL and their desire to normalize life.

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding the impact of HNL on individual patients may be critical to optimizing treatment strategies to improve the physical burden of HNL and QoL. This study provides the framework for developing a patient-reported HNL QoL measure.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS

The development of an HNL-specific QoL measure, grounded in the patient perspective, may provide cancer care teams with a tool to better understand HNL's impact on each patient to tailor patient-centered care and optimize QoL outcomes.

Meta-analytic review on the differential effects of self-compassion components on well-being and psychological distress: The moderating role of dialecticism on self-compassion

Although self-compassion has been extensively studied in the recent decades, the representation of self-compassion as a unitary measure or the presence of self-warmth (i.e., presence of the positive components: self-kindness, common humanity, and mindfulness) and self-coldness (i.e., presence of the negative components: self-judgment, isolation, and mindfulness) remains controversial. Moreover, the differential effects of the six components of self-compassion on mental well-being and psychological distress have not been systematically investigated. To synthesize the differential effects of the six components of self-compassion and to examine how people in different cultures may associate the positive and negative components of self-compassion differentially, the present meta-analysis synthesized 183 effect sizes across 27 cultures. Results showed that the negative components of self-compassion (rs = 0.44 to 0.45) showed greater effect sizes with psychological distress than the positive counterparts (rs = -0.17 to -0.29) whereas the positive components of SCS (rs = 0.29 to.39) showed greater effect sizes with mental well-being than the negative counterparts (rs = -0.29 to -0.36), with the exception of common humanity and isolation (r = 0.29 and - 0.36). Cultural orientation of dialecticism moderated the association between the positive and the negative components of self-compassion, with dialectical cultures showing lower associations between the two opposing components. Findings have implications on the design and implementation of self-compassion interventions cross-culturally.

The Effect of Self-Compassion on Psychosocial and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Medical Conditions: A Systematic Review

Studies about the role of self-compassion have focused primarily on psychological well-being, but there is solid evidence to suggest that self-compassion may have larger and more prominent implications in the medical world. Therefore, this systemic review aimed to investigate the effects of self-compassion on psychosocial and clinical outcomes in medically ill patients.

A comprehensive search of several databases from their inception to August 10, 2020, was conducted, which included Ovid MEDLINE(R) and Epub Ahead of Print, Ovid Embase, Ovid Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Eligible studies needed to include psychosocial or clinical outcomes of self-compassion in medically ill patients.

Nineteen articles (n=2,713 patients; 73.3% females) met our eligibility criteria and were included in this systematic review. There was a negative correlation between self-compassion and psychosocial outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Moreover, based on self-compassion intervention, there was an improvement in clinical outcomes related to diabetes such as hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and blood glucose levels.

This systematic review highlights the effect of self-compassion on psychosocial and clinical outcomes. Further studies are needed to evaluate long-term outcomes of a self-compassion-based-intervention to highlight its importance in the role of disease management.
