Abstract
This study evaluated the removal of a calcium silicate-based sealer (EndoSeal MTA) with needle irrigation (NI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), XP-endo Finisher (XPF) and EDDY. A total of 56 human mandibular premolars were instrumented up to size 40.04 taper. The roots were separated longitudinally, and grooves were prepared with an ultrasonic tip at one-half of each root canal. The grooves were covered with EndoSeal MTA and re-attached roots were investigated based on the activation techniques applied. The results showed that significantly more material (p < 0.05) was removed in the EDDY group compared to the NI, PUI and XPF groups in the apical region. In the coronal region, no significant difference was observed between EDDY, XPF and PUI (p > 0.05), whereas all the latter were significantly more effective than NI (p < 0.05). These findings show that the removal of EndoSeal MTA can be more effective with EDDY compared to XPF, PUI and NI in the apical region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to investigate the penetration of endodontic sealers into the dentinal tubules after retreatment using two different obturation techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty mandibular premolars were prepared up to instrument F3 (ProTaper Universal, Dentsply) and filled with Endofill using the single cone technique. The canals were retreated using Mtwo instruments. Reobturation was performed with the Bio-C sealer mixed with a fluorophore dye (Fluo-3) using either the lateral condensation technique (group LC) or the single cone technique (group SC) (n = 15). Teeth were sectioned 2, 4, and 6 mm from the apex and analyzed with CLSM to assess the penetration of the sealer into the canal perimeter and the maximum depth of penetration of the sealer into the dentinal tubules. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Student-t and Holm-Sidak tests. RESULTS In the apical segment, the penetrated perimeter was significantly higher in the LC group than in the SC group (p < 0.05); no significant difference was found in the middle and cervical segments (p > 0.05). In terms of penetration depth, no significant differences were found for any of the segments studied (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The LC technique promoted a higher percentage of canal circumference penetrated by the sealer than the SC technique in the apical segment after endodontic retreatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE CLSM demonstrated that the LC technique promoted a higher percentage of canal perimeter penetrated by the Bio-C sealer than the SC technique in the apical segment of mandibular premolars after retreatment.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of reciprocating instruments in the removal of bioceramic and epoxy resin-based sealers using micro-CT analysis. Root canals of 40 extracted human teeth were instrumented with a size R25 Reciproc instrument. Specimens were randomly divided into two groups (n = 20) according to the root canal filling material. In the first group, root canals were obturated with AH Plus sealer and Reciproc R25 gutta-percha. In the second group, a combination of bioceramic gutta-percha (TotalFill BC) and bioceramic sealer (TotalFill BC) was used. After one week, the retreatment of all specimens was performed using Reciproc instruments. To analyze the differences in the filling remnants, specimens were scanned in a micro-CT device after obturation and after the retreatment procedure. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05). A combination of bioceramic sealer and bioceramic gutta-percha was more effectively removed from canals using a reciprocating instrument, with a filling remnants volume of 4.01 ± 3.13 mm3, in comparison to the combination of epoxy resin-based sealer and gutta-percha (6.96 ± 2.70 mm3) (p < 0.05). A reciprocating instrument was more effective in removing bioceramic sealers than epoxy resin-based sealers, although none of the root canal filling materials were completely removed from the root canals.

Abstract
Despite enjoying high favourable outcome rates, root canal treatment is not always successful. Root canal retreatment is a widely practised option for managing a non-healing root treated tooth. A basic distinction between retreatment and initial treatment is the requirement to remove the existing root filling material occupying the root canal space. Only then, can the technical deficiencies and possible causes of failure be addressed. Hence, the successful removal of the root filling material is critical to achieving the objectives of retreatment. Many different materials and techniques have been used for root canal filling, which have been documented in a plethora of studies; these are mainly laboratory studies investigating the removal of root filling materials. To help guide future research, which may then better inform clinical practice in relation to retreatment procedures, the focus of this narrative review is on the research methods and experimental models employed to study the removal of root filling materials. The current available literature demonstrates great variation in the research methodologies used to study the removal of root filling material, including direct visualization by splitting tooth samples or clearing, three-dimensional radiographic imaging including using microcomputed tomography or cone-beam computed tomography, and a combination of these techniques. Depending on the research method employed, variation also exists in quantification of root filling material removal; these include measurements of surface area, volume or weight, and criteria-based (semi-quantitative) assessment. Experimental models, using human teeth or resin models, differ with respect to standardization techniques and replication of the clinical scenario including initial sample preparation, canal filling, allocation and technical aspects of retreatment procedures. Future models should replicate, as closely as possible, the clinical scenario. Currently, microcomputed tomography provides a highly detailed, non-invasive and non-destructive method of objectively assessing and quantifying root filling removal.

Abstract
Background: Laser irradiation modifies the topography and composition of dentin surface aiming to increase the retention of bonded posts. Objective: To assess the effect of dentin irradiation with Er,Cr:YSGG or diode lasers on the bond strength of fiber posts using self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and methods: Sixty bovine root canals were root-canal treated, post spaces were prepared, and subsequently fiber posts were cemented. The samples were distributed according to the surface treatment: distilled water (control), Er,Cr:YSGG (1.5 W, 20 sec), or diode (1.5 W, 20 sec) lasers. Bond strengths were assessed by pull-out (n = 10) or push-out testing (n = 10). Pearson's correlation was calculated. Failure mode after testing and the depth of tags in the dentinal tubules were analyzed by confocal laser microscopy. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: In the push-out test, Er,Cr:YSGG laser had significantly different higher values (5.43 ± 0.10 MPa) compared to the control (4.79 ± 0.05 MPa). Diode laser values were not significantly different from the other groups (5.12 ± 0.27 MPa). In the pull-out test, there were no significant differences between Er,Cr:YSGG (6.86 ± 2.16 MPa) and diode (8.43 ± 1.77 MPa) lasers, and both had significant differences compared to the control (4.18 ± 1.29 MPa). No correlation was found. Adhesive failures were predominant in all groups, and no significant differences in tag penetration among the groups were found. Conclusions: The Er,Cr:YSGG laser increases the bond strength of resin cement and fiber post to dentin in both tests, compared to control group without laser treatment. Diode laser only enhanced bonding for pull-out test.

Abstract
AIM To compare the Reciproc Blue, Reciproc and ProTaper Universal Retreatment systems with regard to the effective removal of epoxy resin-based sealer and gutta-percha during the retreatment of oval, straight root canals. METHODOLOGY Forty-five extracted, human mandibular first premolars with single straight oval canals were selected on the basis of cone beam computed tomography evaluations. The root canals were instrumented with the ProTaper Next system up to the X2 file, and filled with gutta-percha and epoxy resin-based sealer using the cold lateral condensation technique. After 1 month, the samples were randomly divided into three groups (n = 15) according to the retreatment system used: Reciproc Blue R40, Reciproc R40 and ProTaper Universal. The specimens were scanned at the resolution of 1.2 μm by a microcomputed tomography device after the root filling and retreatment procedures, and the decrease in the volume of filling material after each retreatment protocol was measured. The results were analysed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and additional box-and-whisker plots. RESULTS Although the volume of the filling material decreased significantly in all three groups (P < 0.05), none of the systems removed the material completely. The Reciproc system removed significantly more material than the ProTaper Universal (P < 0.001) and Reciproc Blue (P = 0.005) systems, with the latter two exhibiting equal volumes of remaining material (P = 0.068). CONCLUSION The Reciproc system was more effective than the Reciproc Blue and ProTaper Universal Retreatment systems during the removal of filling material from oval, straight canals, although none of the systems completely removed the filling material.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the wear of root wall surfaces, the bond strength of sealers to dentine and the demineralization around root filling materials after canals were exposed to acid challenge in situ. METHODOLOGY Eighty-seven roots of mandibular incisors were selected. Thirty-two were used in the laboratory bond strength study (n = 8), and 55 in the in situ study (n = 11). Root canals were prepared biomechanically and then filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus, MTA Fillapex, Sealapex or Endofill. For 14 days, 11 participants used intra-oral devices with five sterilized roots (four experimental and one control - only canal prepared). Drops of sucrose were dripped onto roots allowing the accumulation of biofilm on canal surfaces. Roots were removed, sectioned and analysed for the following: bond strength of filling material using a push-out test and also wear profile and dentine demineralization using confocal microscopy. Bond strength (MPa) was evaluated by two-way anova and Tukey test (α = 0.05), and wear profile was assessed by Kruskal-Wallis and t-tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS AH Plus had the highest bond strength values. Intermediate results were found in roots with MTA Fillapex and Endofill, whilst Sealapex had inferior results (P < 0.05). No significant differences were found amongst root thirds (P > 0.05). For wear profile, samples were associated with degradation of the filling materials after exposure to the oral environment (P < 0.05). Roots had signs of demineralization around the filling material when Sealapex and Endofill were used. CONCLUSIONS Sealers were not able to prevent degradation of the adhesive interface and dentine. AH Plus and MTA Fillapex had superior bond strength to dentine and less intense demineralization around the root filling.

Abstract
This study evaluated the removal of filling material with ProTaper Universal Rotary Retreatment system (PTR) combined with solvents and the influence of solvents on the bond strength (PBS) of sealer to intraradicular dentin after canal reobturation. Roots were endodontically treated and distributed to five groups (n = 12). The control group was not retreated. In the four experimental groups, canals were retreated with PTR alone or in combination with xylol, orange oil, and eucalyptol. After filling material removal, two specimens of each group were analysed by SEM and µCT to verify the presence of filling remnants on root canal walls. The other roots were reobturated and sectioned in 1-mm-thick dentin slices that were subjected to the push-out test. Data were analysed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). SEM and µCT analysis revealed that all retreatment techniques left filling remnants on canal walls. The control group (3.47 ± 1.21) presented significantly higher (p < 0.05) PBS than the experimental groups. The groups retreated with PTR alone (2.59 ± 0.99) or combined with xylol (2.54 ± 0.77) and orange oil (2.32 ± 0.93) presented similar bond strength (p > 0.05), and differed significantly from the group with eucalyptol (1.89 ± 0.63). The solvents reduced the PBS of the sealer to dentin and no retreatment technique promoted complete removal of filling material.

Abstract
Endodontic sealer residues remaining within the pulp chamber dentin after root canal obturation and cleaning with various solvents may compromise the appearance and the durability of dental restorations. Acid etching is routinely performed prior to application of dentine adhesive systems, but is effect on residual sealer material and the optimal time-point for performing etching, are unknown. Here, we evaluated the effect of acid etching on the dentin surface when performed either immediately or 7 days after removal of the endodontic sealer with two solvents, i.e., 95% ethanol or xylol. Forty crowns fragments from bovine incisors were impregnated with sealer and divided into 4 groups (n = 10 each), according to the dentin cleaning protocol and to the acid etching time-point: G1, 95.0% ethanol and immediate acid etching; G2, xylol and immediate acid etching; G3, 95.0% ethanol and acid etching after 7 days; and G4, xylol and acid etching after 7 days. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images (2000 ×) were obtained from each specimen and the number of open dentinal tubules counted and compared. Another 40 fragments were similarly prepared, and SEM images were obtained (500 ×) to score and compare the persistence of sealer residues on the dentin. G4 showed the most open dentinal tubules and the least epoxy resin-based sealer residues on the dentin surface (p < 0.05). The least epoxy resin-based sealer residues was obtained when acid etching, using 37% phosphoric acid, was performed after 7 days after cleaning the dentin with xylol.
