Abstract
OBJECTIVES This ex vivo study aimed to evaluate the influence of different filling techniques on the filling removal from oval root canals filled with bioceramic sealer. METHODS Thirty-six mandibular incisors with single oval canals were filled with bioceramic sealer following the techniques (n = 12): single-cone, modified McSpadden, or continuous wave of condensation, and scanned by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The filling was removed using the Clearsonic ultrasound tip and Reciproc system up to the R40 instrument, and the working time was recorded. The teeth were scanned again by micro-CT. Percentage of remnant volume (mm³) of the filling material, dentin thickness, and root canal transportation were measured. The data was analyzed using parametric and non-parametric tests with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS It took more time to remove the filling material using the continuous wave of condensation technique (p < 0.05), followed by the modified McSpadden and single-cone techniques. There was no difference (p > 0.05) when comparing the percentage of remaining filling material among the three groups, nor did it among the segments of each tooth. There was also no difference in the analysis of dentin thickness and transportation when comparing the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The filling technique did not influence the amount of remaining filling material, dentin thickness, and transportation. The working time was longer with thermoplastic filling techniques. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Endodontic retreatment in teeth filled with bioceramic sealers increases with their use. Several techniques are used to fill the root canals, thus, it is important to know whether the filling technique influences the non-surgical endodontic retreatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the XP-endo Finisher R (XPFR; FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) or the Flatsonic ultrasonic tip (Helse Ultrasonic, Santa Rosa de Viterbo, SP, Brazil) in removing remaining filling material after the retreatment of flattened root canals using micro-computed tomographic imaging. METHODS Twenty-four flattened distal root canals of mandibular molars with a buccolingual diameter 4 or more times larger than the mesiodistal diameter were prepared with Reciproc Blue (RB) R40 (VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) and filled using the Tagger hybrid technique. All canals were retreated with RB R40, and apical enlargement was performed with RB R50 (VDW GmbH). The specimens were randomly distributed into 2 groups: XPFR or Flatsonic (n = 12). The percentage of remaining filling material after retreatment and centralization ability was evaluated. Data were submitted to Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and unpaired t tests (α = 5%). RESULTS Greater capacity to remove remaining filling material in the entire canal and the cervical and middle thirds was observed for the Flatsonic compared with the XPFR (P < .05). However, both supplementary cleaning techniques showed a similar percentage of residual filling material in the apical third (P > .05). No difference was observed in the centralization ability between the techniques (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The Flatsonic promotes greater removal of remaining filling material than the XPFR in the retreatment of flattened root canals. However, both supplementary cleaning approaches were similar in the apical third. The XPFR and Flatsonic were able to maintain root canal centralization.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of the Reciproc, Reciproc Blue, and WaveOne Gold systems to remove filling material during endodontic retreatment of extracted human mandibular premolars. METHODS Thirty-nine teeth were instrumented with the Protaper Universal System to the F3 file and filled with the Tagger hybrid technique using an F3 gutta-percha cone and AH Plus cement. At the end of this period, the teeth were scanned with micro-computed tomography before and after removal of the filling material from the root canals. The teeth were divided into 3 groups (n = 13) based on the apical volume, depending on the systems used to remove the filling material. Group GR: Reciproc 40/.06; Group GRB: Reciproc Blue 40/.06; and Group GWG: WaveOne Gold 35/.06. The results were statistically analyzed using the tests of Kruskal-Wallis, Duncan, and analysis of variance at a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The results showed that there were no significant differences between the amounts of filling material removed, either for the apical and middle regions alone or in the overall evaluation for the 3 groups (P = .97). The time evaluation statistically showed that the GR and GWG groups required less time to clean the root canals than the GRB group. CONCLUSIONS Reciproc R40 files and WaveOne Gold Medium files required less time for endodontic treatment than Reciproc Blue R40 files. There was no difference in the ability to remove obturation material between the 3 instruments. No instrument was able to completely remove the filling material from the root canals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the amount of remaining filing material and apical debris extrusion after retreatment using Reciproc Blue, Hyflex EDM and ProTaper Retreatment Files. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-six extracted permanent mandibular first molars with moderately curved mesial roots were selected. Mesiobuccal canals were prepared using the ProTaper Next system up to size X2 and filled using gutta-percha and Adseal sealer via cold lateral compaction. Teeth were randomly divided into three equal groups (n = 12): Group 1: Reciproc Blue (RB)(VDW, Germany), Group 2: Hyflex EDM (HEDM)(Coltene/Whaledent, Switzerland), Group 3: ProTaper Universal Retreatment file system + ProTaper Next file system (PTUR + PTN)( Dentsply Maillefer, Switzerland). Eppendorf tubes were used to collect the apically extruded debris. Cone-beam computed tomographic scans were taken prior to and after retreatment and the volume of remaining filling material was assessed at the coronal, middle and apical levels. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, Friedman's test and Wilcoxon Sign Rank test. Significance level was set at p value 0.05. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences among the three groups in the reduction of the volume of the filling material or in the amount of apically extruded debris. CONCLUSION All the tested filing systems showed similar efficacy in removing the filling material, however, none of them could achieve its complete removal. Apical extrusion of debris occurred with all the systems used with no significant difference between the three groups.

Abstract
This study compared the performance of Reciproc and Reciproc Blue endodontic files in retreatment time and re-establishment of apical patency, plus removal of a bioceramic sealer from the canal surface with the supplementary use of the XP-endo Finisher R. Following preparation, slightly curved oval root canals in mandibular incisors were filled using a corresponding gutta-percha point and a bioceramic sealer. Apical patency achievement was assessed and the time required to reach the original working length was recorded. The samples were split longitudinally and were photographed to assess the material remaining on the canal walls. No significant differences were observed regarding patency achievement or retreatment times when comparing Reciproc and Reciproc Blue. Significant less material remained on the canal walls when Reciproc was followed by XP-endo compared with Reciproc alone, and when the data for Reciproc and Reciproc Blue were pooled.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various filling and retreatment techniques for oval-shaped root canals. Methods Sixty distal roots of mandibular molar teeth were included in the study. The roots were prepared using the ProTaper Next (PTN) X4 rotary system and irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl. The roots were then divided into three groups and filled with Total Fill BC Sealer (FKG Dentaire) using three different techniques (n=20): single cone (SC), GuttaCore (GC), and warm vertical condensation (WVC). The retreatment procedure was performed using two different instrumentation techniques: Reciproc 50 (R50) and PTN X5 (n=10). To analyze the remaining filling material, the roots were divided buccolingually in two parts with the help of diamond separators, and photographs were taken at x16 magnification using a dental operating microscope (DOM). The ratio of the remaining filling materials was calculated using image analysis software and statistically evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results None of the assessed retreatment procedures completely removed the filling materials from the root canals. For both instrumentation techniques, more root canal filling material remained in the WVC group (P<0.05). Conclusion The GC filling technique had a higher cleaning percentage than the WVC and SC techniques in the coronal region. The R50 system was found to be superior to the PTN X5 system for retreatment, and the root canal fillings applied using the WVC technique were more difficult to remove than the fillings applied using the other techniques.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed the influence of additional apical preparation on material removal during retreatment of curved root canals filled with different sealers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve mesial roots of mandibular molars with two separate canals and curvature between 25 and 35 degrees were selected. The working length was established 1-mm short of the apical foramen, and all the root canals were prepared using ProDesign R (PDR) 25/0.06. After preparation, the root canals were divided in two groups (n = 12) and filled by continuous wave condensation technique with NeoMTA Plus or AH Plus. All the root canals were retreated using rotary ProDesign Logic RT 25/0.08, reciprocating PDR 25/0.06 and apical preparation with PDR 35/0.05. Additional apical preparation was performed with ProDesign Logic (PDL) 50/0.01. The samples were scanned using a Skycan 1176 micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), voxel size 8.74 µm, before and after the retreatment procedures. Percentages of remaining filling material were evaluated. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS The data were submitted to paired and unpaired t-tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS Percentage of remaining filling material was similar between the root canals filled with NeoMTA Plus or AH Plus sealer after retreatment using PDR 35/0.05, and after additional apical preparation using PDL 50/0.01 (p > 0.05). However, PDL 50/0.01 significantly decreased the percentage of remaining filling material in the apical third after the additional apical preparation for both sealers (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION NeoMTA Plus or AH Plus did not influence the retreatment of curved root canals. ProDesign Logic 50/0.01 promoted greater filling material removal in the apical third.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), XP-endo Finisher (XPF), and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) for the removal of root canal filling materials from oval root canals. Background: Various adjunctive irrigation techniques following mechanical preparation have been applied to enhance removal of fillings during root canal retreatment. However, whether there is superiority of one approach over others remains controversial. Methods: Thirty extracted single-rooted teeth with oval-shaped canals were instrumented with the ProTaper Next (PTN) system and obturated with the warm vertical compaction technique. After storage at 37°C for 1 month, retreatment was performed with the PTN system up to size X4. The teeth were then randomly assigned into three groups (n = 10) that were, respectively, subjected to supplementary irrigation with different protocols: PIPS, PUI, and XPF, followed by measurement of filling material volumes using high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Results: The PTN preparation resulted in significant reductions in residual filling materials (p < 0.05), whereas PIPS, PUI, and XPF moderately improved the removal of the remnants (p > 0.05). The residual filling materials after supplementary irrigation ranged from 0.384 ± 0.181 to 0.421 ± 0.143 mm3 in oval canals. There was no significant difference in the effectiveness among the PIPS, PUI, and XPF approaches (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Mechanical preparations are useful for removing most root fillings during retreatment in oval-shaped canals. PIPS can reduce residual root-filling materials to the similar extent as PUI and XPF.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the removal effect of the ProTaper Next system (PTN) combined with manual nickel-titanium Hedström (MNiTiH) files or chloroform on filling materials of mandibular incisors by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Sixty-four extracted human mandibular incisors were finally selected and assigned to two groups (n = 32) based on root canal morphology after instrumentation. Two subgroups (n = 16) were formed based on two retreatment methods. The volume of residual filling materials (RFMs) and the surface area covered by RFMs were analyzed by micro-CT, the apical extrusion and the time taken for removing the filling materials were recorded. A smaller percentage of the volume of RFMs and less surface area covered by RFMs occurred in PTN combined with MNiTiH groups and round-shaped canal incisors (P < 0.05). The time taken for removing the filling materials was not significantly different in all groups (P > 0.05). The apical extrusion was significantly less in PTN combined with MNiTiH groups than in PTN combined with chloroform groups (P < 0.05). Neither of the two methods rendered root canals completely free from filling materials. PTN combined with MNiTiH could reduce the apical extrusion and remove filling materials more efficiently than PTN combined with chloroform.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the retreatment efficiency of XP-endo Shaper and R-Endo files in curved root canals using ImageJ software. METHODS Forty extracted mandibular first molars with curved mesial canals (25°-35°) were chosen. Access cavities, preparation and obturation of root canals were performed. Roots were randomly distributed into two groups corresponding to the retreatment files used. Group 1 retreated with XP-endo Shaper file, and group 2 retreated with R-Endo files. Each root was sectioned and photographed. ImageJ software was used to estimate the percentage of residual filling material that existed on the three root canal segments. Mann-Whitney U and the Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare the percentages of residual filling material between the teeth segments (P < .05). RESULTS The R-Endo group showed a significantly higher median percentage of residual filling material than the XP-endo Shaper group. In both groups, the coronal segments had the highest median of the residual filling material, followed by the middle and apical segments. CONCLUSION XP-endo Shaper is significantly more effective than R-Endo in removing root canal filling materials in the coronal, middle, and apical segments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare the efficiency of endodontic rotary and reciprocating systems in removing calcium silicate-sealer based fillings and to investigate the impact of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on their efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS 160 root-canals were instrumented, filled with gutta-percha and calcium silicate based-sealer and divided into 10 equal groups. Five groups in which the reciprocating systems (WaveOne-Gold, Reciproc-Blue and R-Motion) and rotary systems (Fanta-AF-One and Tango-Endo) were used to remove root-canals' fillings. In the other five groups the fillings were removed by the same systems then additionally with PUI. The times to complete retreatments procedures were recorded. Micro-computed tomography's analysis of the root-canals fillings' volume before and after retreatments was used to determine the remaining filling materials (RFMs) volumes. RESULTS The RFMs after using rotary systems (10.1%) was greater than after using reciprocating systems (3.8%) (P < 0.001). The RFMs after using WOG (2%) and RB systems (2.6%) were less than those in the RM (6.8%), TE (9.5%) and FAFO (10.7%) systems [P < 0.05]. The times required to remove the filling materials using the TE (3.7 min), FAFO (4.1 min) and RM (4.1 min) systems were shorter than those required by the RB (5.4 min) and WOG (4.9 min) systems [P < 0.05]. Using PUI resulted in less RFMs (1.44%) when compared to using only rotary or reciprocating systems (6.27%) [P < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS Endodontic reciprocation systems were more effective, but needed longer times than rotary systems in removing calcium silicate based- sealers fillings. The PUI significantly improved removal of the root-canals' filling materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Reciprocating systems and PUI are recommended whenever root-canals retreatment is considered regardless of using calcium silicate-based sealers.

Abstract
Canal filling materials and techniques have been one of the most studied topics in Endodontics. A simple search using the mesh term "root canal filling" in PubMed revealed more than 11,000 articles, an impressive number that is much higher than "root canal disinfection" (5,544 articles) or even the popular "root canal preparation" (8,527 articles). The overriding importance attributed to root filling procedures is not merely intuitive. It derived from the appealing relevance given by the appearance of the white lines in common radiographs grounded on retrospective clinical data that had identified the quality of a root filling as one of the major causes of treatment failure (lack of healing). Since the publication of the Washington study, impressive efforts have been made for the release of new materials and techniques, as well as, for the development of a plethora of laboratory methods to assess the quality of root filling procedures. This narrative review aims to address and discuss the most relevant laboratory methods to assess the root canal filling. Since filling quality improvements have not translated into higher success rates, as reported in longitudinal clinical studies, more than to deliver a simple methodology-based review, this paper aims to present an in-depth critical view on the assessment of laboratory methods used to study the filling materials and techniques. Recent data indicate that the long-term dimensional stability/degradation over time of endodontic sealers plays a central role in the treatment outcome. In this context, laboratory methods should be developed focusing on predicting, at least to some degree, the long-term clinical behaviour of root canal fillings, rather than simply ranking different materials or techniques.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the fracture incidence of Reciproc R25 instruments (VDW) used during non-surgical root canal retreatments performed by students in a postgraduate endodontic program. Materials and Methods From the analysis of clinical record cards and periapical radiographs of root canal retreatments performed by postgraduate students using the Reciproc R25, a total of 1,016 teeth (2,544 root canals) were selected. The instruments were discarded after a single use. The general incidence of instrument fractures and its frequency was analyzed considering the group of teeth and the root thirds where the fractures occurred. Statistical analysis was performed using the χ2 test (p < 0.01). Results Seven instruments were separated during the procedures. The percentage of fracture in relation to the number of instrumented canals was 0.27% and 0.68% in relation to the number of instrumented teeth. Four fractures occurred in maxillary molars, 1 in a mandibular molar, 1 in a mandibular premolar and 1 in a maxillary incisor. A greater number of fractures was observed in molars when compared with the number of fractures observed in the other dental groups (p < 0.01). Considering all of the instrument fractures, 71.43% were located in the apical third and 28.57% in the middle third (p < 0.01). One instrument fragment was removed, one bypassed, while in 5 cases, the instrument fragment remained inside the root canal. Conclusions The use of Reciproc R25 instruments in root canal retreatments carried out by postgraduate students was associated with a low incidence of fractures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated the efficacy of three different supplementary cleaning protocols on the removal of bioceramic-based root canal filling materials from oval-shaped canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 36 human mandibular premolars were instrumented and obturated with gutta-percha and iRoot SP using the single-cone technique. Retreatment was performed with ProTaper Universal retreatment files. The samples were randomly divided into the following supplementary cleaning protocols: conventional syringe irrigation (CSI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), and XP-endo Finisher R (XPR). The samples underwent micro-CT scanning to quantify the amount of residual filling materials after retreatment and after performing the cleaning protocols. The volume of filling material removal was analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Bonferroni and Games-Howell tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS There were significant differences in the amount of root canal filling material removal in every comparison group (P < 0.05). The XPR removed significantly more residual filling materials (P < 0.01) followed by PUI and CSI (P < 0.05). Similar efficacy was found in the total root canal and all root thirds. CONCLUSIONS The additional use of XP-endo Finisher R and passive ultrasonic irrigation effectively removed the bioceramic-obturated root filling materials from the oval-shaped canals. However, none of the techniques completely removed the filling materials. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The XP-endo Finisher R and passive ultrasonic irrigation exhibited greater efficacy compared with syringe irrigation in the reduction of residual filling materials after retreatment in root-filled teeth with a bioceramic sealer.

Abstract
Background/purpose There is no consensus to date on how many repetitive pecking motions at working length (WL) should be regarded as optimal during instrumentation. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of pecking frequency at WL on the volume of apically extruded debris using three single-file systems in curved, oval-shaped canals. Materials and methods Forty-five single-rooted mandibular premolars with curved, oval-shaped canals were prescanned by micro-computed tomography, anatomically paired-matched, and randomly divided among three groups (n = 15 each): Reciproc Blue (RB), WaveOne Gold (WOG) and XP-endo Shaper (XPS). Samples were embedded in agarose gel to collect extruded debris. After preparation to the WL, each sample was rescanned after one, two, four, 10, and 20 pecking motions at WL, respectively. The debris volume was innovatively calculated by a modification of an existing method using micro-computed tomography. The apical preparation size was also measured. Data were compared using a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results All single-file systems extruded debris apically, irrespective of the pecking frequency at WL. The extruded debris volume correlated positively with the minor foramen size (P < 0.05); both increased with pecking frequency for each single-file system (P < 0.05). The minor foramen size corresponded to the instrument tip size when reaching the WL once. Conclusion To produce less debris extrusion and obtain a predictable foramen size corresponding to the instrument tip size, a single pecking motion may be preferred when using single-file systems. Caution should be exercised when applying the current results to clinical situations.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to evaluate the retreatment time and weight of apically extruded debris yielded by two different kinematics during the removal of different root canal filling materials. Forty straight single-rooted extracted teeth were instrumented with HyFlex CM files and obturated with two different techniques: 25.04 HyFlex experimental carrier-based obturators (Coltène/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland) (group 1) or 25.04 single gutta-percha cones (Roeko Coltène/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland) (group 2) and Guttaflow Bioseal as the sealer. Samples were divided into four subgroups (n = 10) according to the used kinematics for the removal of root canal filling materials: continuous rotation (A) or retreatment motion (B) with a Remover and HyFlex EDM Nickel-Titanium instruments activated with a CanalPro Jeni micromotor (Coltène/Whaledent, Altstätten, Switzerland). Time for retreatment was digitally recorded, and debris extruded from the apex was collected in Eppendorf tubes and weighted with an analytical balance. Data on retreatment time and apical extrusion were statistically analyzed with the Kruskal–Wallis test (p < 0.05). Working length was achieved in all the retreated samples. The removal of root filling material resulted significantly faster with the Jeni mode (p < 0.001), and the difference was significant for the removal of both filling materials (p < 0.05). No significant differences on debris extrusion between single cone and experimental obturators groups were noted (p > 0.05), and no significant differences between kinematics (continuous rotation vs. Jeni motion) were observed (p > 0.05). All the tested retreatment strategies lead to an extrusion of material from the apex, and the weight of apically extruded debris was similar. The use of the innovative CanalPro Jeni kinematics accelerates the time for the removal of root filling materials.

Abstract
Despite enjoying high favourable outcome rates, root canal treatment is not always successful. Root canal retreatment is a widely practised option for managing a non-healing root treated tooth. A basic distinction between retreatment and initial treatment is the requirement to remove the existing root filling material occupying the root canal space. Only then, can the technical deficiencies and possible causes of failure be addressed. Hence, the successful removal of the root filling material is critical to achieving the objectives of retreatment. Many different materials and techniques have been used for root canal filling, which have been documented in a plethora of studies; these are mainly laboratory studies investigating the removal of root filling materials. To help guide future research, which may then better inform clinical practice in relation to retreatment procedures, the focus of this narrative review is on the research methods and experimental models employed to study the removal of root filling materials. The current available literature demonstrates great variation in the research methodologies used to study the removal of root filling material, including direct visualization by splitting tooth samples or clearing, three-dimensional radiographic imaging including using microcomputed tomography or cone-beam computed tomography, and a combination of these techniques. Depending on the research method employed, variation also exists in quantification of root filling material removal; these include measurements of surface area, volume or weight, and criteria-based (semi-quantitative) assessment. Experimental models, using human teeth or resin models, differ with respect to standardization techniques and replication of the clinical scenario including initial sample preparation, canal filling, allocation and technical aspects of retreatment procedures. Future models should replicate, as closely as possible, the clinical scenario. Currently, microcomputed tomography provides a highly detailed, non-invasive and non-destructive method of objectively assessing and quantifying root filling removal.

METHODOLOGY Mesial root canals of extracted mandibular molars were instrumented up to size 25, 0.04 taper using JIZAI instruments, and anatomically matched canals were selected based on geometric features of the canal [canal volume (mm3 ), surface area (mm2 ), length, 15°-20° curvature and radius of curvature (4-8 mm)] after micro-computed tomographic scanning. An automated root canal instrumentation and torque/force analysing device was programmed to permit a simulated pecking motion (2 s downward and 1 s upward at 50 mm min-1 ). The selected canals were prepared with size 25, 0.06 taper JIZAI instruments using continuous rotation or OTR motion and further subdivided according to the rotational speed (300 or 500 rpm, n = 10 each). Real-time clockwise/counterclockwise torque and downward/upward force were recorded using a custom-made torque/force analysing device. Then, the registered pre- and post-operative micro-computed tomographic datasets were examined to evaluate the canal volume changes and centring ratios at 1, 3, 5 and 7 mm from the apical foramen. Data were analysed using two-way analysis of variance or the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction (α = 5%). RESULTS Maximum upward force and clockwise torque were significantly smaller in 500 rpm groups than in 300 rpm groups (P < .05); however, no significant difference was found between continuous rotation and OTR motion (P > .05). OTR motion developed higher maximum counterclockwise torque than continuous rotation (P < .05). Maximum downward force, canal volume changes and centring ratios were not significantly different among all groups (P > .05). There was no file fracture in any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS Under laboratory conditions using JIZAI instruments, a rotational speed of 500 rpm generated significantly lower maximum screw-in forces and torque values than rotational speed of 300 rpm. Continuous rotation and OTR motion performed similarly in shaping the canals.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of new irrigation solvent mixtures with Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)/Tetrachloroethylene (TCE) and MEK/Orange oil (OOil), and different agitation techniques on dentin hardness. One hundred forty-four mandibular teeth were prepared and standardized, with each root's middle part transversely sectioned. Initial hardness was measured using a Vickers microhardness tester. Specimens were divided into four groups of agitation techniques (n = 36): no agitation; EndoActivator; IrriSafe; and XP-endo Finisher R. Each group was subdivided into six subgroups of irrigation protocols (n = 6): saline solution; NaOCl + EDTA; NaOCl + EDTA + MEK/TCE; MEK/TCE; NaOCl + EDTA + MEK/OOil; MEK/OOil. Final hardness was measured. The irrigation protocols NaOCl + EDTA, NaOCl + EDTA + MEK/TCE, and NaOCl + EDTA + MEK/OOil significantly decreased dentin hardness, while MEK/OOil increased it (p < 0.05). Comparing to NaOCl + EDTA sequence, dentin hardness increased significantly with the additional exposure to MEK/TCE (3%NaOCl + 17%EDTA + MEK/TCE) or MEK/OOil (3%NaOCl + 17%EDTA + MEK/OOil) (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences regarding agitation effects on dentin hardness decrease. The irrigation protocols affected dentin hardness significantly. However, the additional solvent proposals do not seem to address further concerns on dentin's mechanical properties. Agitation did not show any influence on dentin's hardness reduction.

Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the potential occurrence of dentinal defects after the removal of a root canal filling with two different sealers using Reciproc (RC) or Reciproc Blue (RB). The mesial roots of 60 mandibular molars with a Vertucci type IV configuration were selected. The samples were initially instrumented with Reciproc (R25) and then divided into the following four experimental groups according to the endodontic sealer and retreatment instrument (n = 15): BC Sealer/Reciproc (BCRC); BC Sealer/Reciproc Blue (BCRB); AH Plus/Reciproc (AHRC); and AH Plus/Reciproc Blue (AHRB). Then, the samples were scanned under micro-CT after obturation and removal of the filling material. Two analyses were conducted. First, an evaluation was performed on all the axial images, and another analysis evaluated each millimeter of the 10 mm from the apex. Dentinal defects were observed in all the samples. All of the identified defects in the images after filling material removal were present in the corresponding images after obturation. The use of AH Plus and EndoSequence BC Sealer, and filling material removal using RC and RB instruments did not induce dentinal defects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The preparation of flattened root canals using reciprocating or rotary nickel-titanium instruments associated with the Flatsonic ultrasonic tip (Helse Ultrasonic, Santa Rosa de Viterbo, SP, Brazil) was evaluated by micro-computed tomographic imaging. METHODS Twenty-four flattened distal canals of mandibular molars with a buccolingual diameter 4 or more times larger than the mesiodistal diameter were selected. The root canals were randomly divided into 2 experimental groups for preparation: a Reciproc Blue (RB; VDW GmbH, Munich, Germany) 40/.06 file in reciprocating motion or ProDesign Logic (PDL; Easy Equipamentos Odontológicos, Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil) 40/.01 and 40/.05 files in rotary motion (n = 12). A complementary preparation was performed with the Flatsonic ultrasonic tip for both preparations. Micro-computed tomographic scanning at a resolution of 8.74 μm was performed before and after preparation with the nickel-titanium instruments and after the use of the Flatsonic tip. The percentages of increase in volume, debris, and uninstrumented surface were analyzed. The data obtained were submitted to the paired and unpaired t test, analysis of variance, and the Tukey test (α = 5%). RESULTS The percentage increase in volume, debris, and uninstrumented surface was similar between RB and PDL in the entire root canal (P > .05). The PDL promoted a lower percentage of debris in the cervical third and a lower percentage of increase in volume in the apical third in comparison with RB (P < .05). The Flatsonic decreased debris and uninstrumented surface after PDL preparation in all thirds (P < .05). After preparation with RB, the Flatsonic decreases the debris in the cervical third and the uninstrumented surface in the cervical and middle thirds (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The preparation of flattened root canals using RB or PDL produced a high percentage of debris and uninstrumented surface. The Flatsonic ultrasonic tip significantly improved the cleaning of flattened root canals.

Abstract
Secondary root canal treatment requires the complete removal of filling materials with different chemical-physical properties. A newly developed single-use NiTi instrument (Reciproc Blue, RB) may be more effective in root canal retreatment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate morphology and composition of remnants after retreatment with RB compared to traditional K-File technique, in canals obturated with Thermafil/AH Plus. Twenty-four single-rooted human teeth were shaped with NiTi obturated with AH-Plus/Thermafil and retreated using RB NiTi instruments or manual K-Files. Radiographs were taken to evaluate endodontic space and radiopacity of residual filling-material before/after procedures. After retreatment, samples were longitudinally split and observed by environmental scanning electron microscopy connected to energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (ESEM-EDX) to analyze the debris/remnant position, microchemistry, and dentinal surface morphology. Time for retreatments was recorded and compared using one-way ANOVA (p-value = 0.05). Radiopaque filling residuals were found in both groups. RB system resulted statistically faster than manual K-File in retreatment procedure (p < 0.001). Root canal space radiographic appearance obtained after retreatment with RB was wider than K-File (p < 0.05). ESEM-EDX revealed 4 different morphological dentin area. Area-1: debris-free with typical Ca, P, and N composition of dentin and detected in 70% of the surface. Area-2: presence of deproteinized smear layer free from N and debris in 15% of the surface. Area-3: a thick packed smear layer N-free and with fine debris consisting of trace elements from sealer in 10% of the surface. Area-4: packed with debris and trace elements. No difference was observed between both instruments regarding root canal space appearance and ESEM-EDX analysis. Both systems were able to remove filling material but created a dentine morphology composed of packed debris and filling materials embedded into the smear layer. Dentin surface composition resulted in collagen depleted by irrigation procedures. The reciprocating system required less time to complete retreatment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the shaping ability of the XP Shaper (XPS) file in severely curved canal models under simulated body temperature and compare it with that of the WaveOne Gold (WOG) file. Ninety-six simulated root canals were equally distributed into XPS and WOG systems to be shaped by eight files each. Files were assessed under a stereomicroscope prior to canal shaping to detect deformation if any. The canals were shaped at 35 ± 1°C using the X-Smart Plus motor. Images of the canals were obtained before and after instrumentation using a stereomicroscope to measure the amount of removed resin from both the inner and outer curvature sides at apex (0 mm) and 3 mm and 6 mm from the apex. The shaping time was calculated. The data were statistically analyzed by the independent t-test at 5% significance level. The XPS and WOG systems shaped the canals in 37.0 ± 9.5 and 62.6 ± 11.3 seconds (P < 0.05), respectively. At the apex level, the amount of resin removal in both sides did not show a significant difference between the tested groups (P > 0.05). At 3 mm and 6 mm levels, the WOG removed more resin than XPS at both sides (P < 0.05). In XPS, deformation was observed in four files: one file after the first use, one file after the fourth use, and two files after the sixth use. In WOG, two files were deformed: one file after the fifth use and one file after the sixth use. One XPS file was fractured after the sixth use. In short, XPS and WOG files can be used in shaping severely curved canals as they showed the ability to maintain the original shape with minimal transportation. Both file systems showed signs of deformation after use with a lower number of deformed files observed in WOG throughout the experiment.

Abstract
AIM To determine the effect of blue thermal treatment on Reciproc (VDW, Munich, Germany) endodontic instruments and the amount of apically extruded debris during retreatment procedures. METHODOLOGY Thirty extracted mandibular molar teeth having mesial roots with a degree of curvature less than 20° and having an initial apical size equivalent to a size 10 K-file were selected. The mesial roots of the teeth were removed from the cementoenamel junction to obtain a 15-mm root length. The mesiobuccal canals were prepared to size F2 using the ProTaper Universal system (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland), filled with gutta-percha and 2Seal (VDW) using the lateral compaction technique and then randomly divided into two groups (n = 15). The root fillings were removed with one of the following instruments using a crown-down preparation technique: M-Wire Reciproc or Reciproc Blue (both VDW). Apically extruded debris was collected in pre-weighed Eppendorf tubes. The Eppendorf tubes were then stored in an incubator at 70 °C for five days to evaporate the distilled water. The data were analysed using the Mann-Whitney U test (P = 0.05). RESULTS Reciproc Blue (1.42 ± 0.4491 mg) extruded significantly less debris apically than M-Wire Reciproc (2.56 ± 1.0232 mg) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Blue thermal treatment of Reciproc instruments was associated with less debris extrusion during retreatment procedures.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the performance of XP-endo Finisher R instruments when removing root filling remnants from oval-shaped canals using microcomputed tomographic (micro-CT) imaging as the analytical tool. Passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) was used as a reference technique for comparison. METHODOLOGY Twenty mandibular incisors with oval-shaped canals were matched based on similar anatomic features of the canal (volume, aspect ratio and 3D configuration) after scanning procedures. The canals were prepared with Reciproc R25 instruments, filled with gutta-percha and AH Plus sealer using the single-cone technique and retreated up to a Reciproc R40 instrument. After retreatment procedures, the specimens were rescanned, and the homogeneity between the specimens, the oval-shaped anatomy and the remaining filling material were confirmed. The pair-matched samples were assigned to two experimental groups (n = 10), according to the supplementary approach used: XP-endo Finisher R or PUI. Each sample was scanned after each endodontic procedure. The volume of remaining root filling material was quantified before and after the use of each supplementary approach. This analysis was performed considering the total canal (Student t-test) and also by thirds (anova procedure followed by a Bonferroni correction). Data were analysed statistically with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS The volume of root filling material at baseline was similar between the groups (t-test, P = 0.787). XP-endo Finisher R removed significantly more root filling material compared to PUI (t-test, P = 0.015), as it removed a mean of ≅32% material compared to 12% for the PUI. There was no difference in the amount of root filling material removed in the root canal thirds after using both supplementary approaches (one-way anova, P = 0.07 for XP-endo Finisher R and P = 0.886 for PUI). CONCLUSIONS Both supplementary approaches significantly reduced the volume of remaining root filling material from oval-shaped canals. The XP-endo Finisher R instrument removed significantly more root filling material than PUI.
