A laboratory study of the scouting ability of two reciprocating glide path instruments in mesial root canals of extracted mandibular molars

Evaluation of shaping ability of different glide path instruments: a micro-computed tomography study

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to compare the shaping ability of different instruments, TruNatomy Glider (TRN-G), WaveOne Gold Glider (WOG-G), and ProGlider (Pro-G) using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

METHODS

The mesial canals of 27 mandibular molars with two separate mesial canals and moderate curvature were included in this study [n = 27 mesiobuccal (MB) and mesiolingual (ML) root canal]. According to the manufacturer's instructions, the glide path was created with TRN-G, WOG-G, and Pro-G glide path instruments (n = 9 MB and ML root canal in each group). Micro-CT scanning was performed before and after preparation. Mesiodistal (MD) and buccolingual (BL) transportation and the centering ratio were measured at three levels within the canal (3, 5 and 7 mm). A three-way robust ANOVA was used to compare the parameters.

RESULTS

TRN-G showed significantly greater transportation in the MD direction than the other instruments throughout the root canal (overall root canal) (p < 0.05). The best centering ability in the BL direction was shown by the WOG-G, regardless of level within the canal and canal distinction (MB vs. ML) (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between groups according to the level within the canal and canal parameters (p > 0.05). Whether the root canal was MB or ML did not affect centering or transportation (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Glide path instruments can be used to shape moderately curved canals with minimal apical transportation and better centering ability. All three tested glide path files can used safely before the shaping file.

Comparative analysis of torsional and cyclic fatigue resistance of ProGlider, WaveOne Gold Glider, and TruNatomy Glider in simulated curved canal

Objectives

This study aimed to compare the torsional and cyclic fatigue resistance of ProGlider (PG), WaveOne Gold Glider (WGG), and TruNatomy Glider (TNG).

Materials and Methods

A total of 15 instruments of each glide path system (n = 15) were used for each test. A custom-made device simulating an angle of 90° and a radius of 5 millimeters was used to assess cyclic fatigue resistance, with calculation of number of cycles to failure. Torsional fatigue resistance was assessed by maximum torque and angle of rotation. Fractured instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and the significance level was set at 5%.

Results

The WGG group showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance than the PG and TNG groups (p < 0.05). In the torsional fatigue test, the TNG group showed a higher angle of rotation, followed by the PG and WGG groups (p < 0.05). The TNG group was superior to the PG group in torsional resistance (p < 0.05). SEM analysis revealed ductile morphology, typical of the 2 fracture modes: cyclic fatigue and torsional fatigue.

Conclusions

Reciprocating WGG instruments showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance, while TNG instruments were better in torsional fatigue resistance. The significance of these findings lies in the identification of the instruments' clinical applicability to guide the choice of the most appropriate instrument and enable the clinician to provide a more predictable glide path preparation.

Static Cyclic Fatigue Resistance in Abrupt Curvature, Surface Topography, and Torsional Strength of R-Pilot and ProGlider Glide Path Instruments

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to compare ProGlider (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and R-Pilot (VDW, Munich, Germany) instruments in terms of their cyclic fatigue resistance using an artificial stainless steel canal showing an abrupt apical curvature, torsional resistance according to the ISO specification, and topographic changes on the instrument surface after glide path management in mesial canals of mandibular first molars with the abrupt curvature selected based on their micro-computed tomographic examination.

METHODS

Eighty instruments were used: 40 ProGlider (size 0.16, .02v taper) and 40 R-Pilot (size 0.125, .04 taper) instruments. The cyclic fatigue resistance was tested in a static test model using an artificial canal with an abrupt apical curvature (angle of curvature of 90° and radius of curvature of 2 mm). The torsional resistance test was performed according to ISO 3630-1 specifications. To determine surface topography of the unused and used instruments, mesial root canals of mandibular molars with an abrupt apical curvature were selected to prepare a glide path with either the ProGlider or R-Pilot instrument. An optical profilometer and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the surface properties. Normally distributed torsional and cyclic resistance data were analyzed using the Student t test, whereas quantitative data obtained by the optical profilometer were analyzed with the Kruskal-Wallis H test with a 5% significance threshold.

RESULTS

The R-Pilot showed significantly higher cyclic fatigue and torsional resistance than the ProGlider (P < .05). Angular deflection values were similar between instruments (P < .05). Measurements made from the blade area showed that the surface roughness values of the ProGlider were larger. Cutting blade measurements showed that unused instruments had significantly greater roughness values than used ones (P < .05). Although there was a 14% increase between the blade edge radii of the used and unused R-Pilot instruments, this difference was determined as 61% in ProGlider instruments.

CONCLUSIONS

The R-Pilot exhibited greater cyclic fatigue strength than the ProGlider when tested in an artificial canal with an inner diameter of 1.0 mm and an abrupt apical curvature. Torsional resistance of the R-Pilot was higher than the ProGlider, but the angular deflection values were similar. Glide path preparation in a mesial root canal with an abrupt apical curvature did not increase the surface roughness of both instruments but resulted in a greater blade edge radius.
