Regression of cutaneous xerosis with emollient treatment in sub-Saharan African patients

An Emollient PLUS Balm Is Useful for the Management of Xerosis in Patients Treated for Cancer: A Real-World, Prospective, Observational, Multicenter Study

INTRODUCTION

Xerosis is a common skin side effect of current anticancer therapies, including chemotherapy, targeted therapy, radiotherapy, and hormonotherapy. We evaluated the effectiveness of an emollient PLUS containing an Aquaphilus dolomiae extract (ADE-G1) for the management of xerosis in adult patients treated for cancer.

METHODS

This real-world, prospective, observational, multicenter study involved 319 xerotic cancer patients, who were prescribed the study product according to the usual practice of their physician. The practitioner assessed xerosis severity and objective clinical signs, and the patients assessed subjective clinical signs and the impact of their skin condition on their quality of life, at inclusion and after around 4 weeks of use. Overall effectiveness and tolerance were assessed at the end of the study. Clinical success was defined by the combination of several of these effectiveness outcomes.

RESULTS

Daily application of the emollient PLUS reduced xerosis severity in 62.7% of patients (p < 0.0001). The mean total severity scores for objective and subjective clinical signs were reduced by 67.7% and 57.4% (p < 0.0001), respectively, compared with baseline. The mean Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) score also significantly improved at the end of follow-up (-56.6%, p < 0.0001). The product was rated as "effective" or "very effective" by the physician for over 80% of patients, regardless of the initial severity grade of xerosis. Overall clinical success was achieved in 73.7% of patients. A trend toward higher effectiveness and clinical success was observed in patients under hormonotherapy. The study product was well tolerated, regardless of the anticancer therapy being received.

CONCLUSION

This study shows that the emollient PLUS containing ADE-G1 is an effective treatment for xerosis in cancer patients, regardless of the initial grade of xerosis and the anticancer treatment received.

An Emollient Containing Aquaphilus dolomiae Extract is Effective in the Management of Xerosis and Pruritus: An International, Real-World Study

INTRODUCTION

Xerosis and pruritus are common manifestations of numerous dermatologic and systemic diseases. We evaluated the effectiveness of an emollient containing an Aquaphilus dolomiae extract (ADE-G1) for the management of pruritus and xerosis in patients of all age with a range of dermatologic and systemic diseases.

METHODS

This open-label, real-world study involved 5910 patients from 33 European, South American, Asian, and North and South African countries, who applied the product for 7 days twice daily to the face and body after the skin had been cleansed and dried. The physician assessed xerosis severity and patients assessed pruritus severity, the duration of itch, sleep quality, and the impact of their skin disease on their quality of life, using scales derived from the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index and questionnaires, at inclusion and after 7 days of use.

RESULTS

The 7-day care regimen resulted in 56% and 60% reductions in xerosis and pruritus severity, respectively, regardless of the underlying pathology (p < 0.0001), with the largest decreases observed for patients with ichthyosis for xerosis and for patients post scabies treatment for pruritus. The mean sleep disturbance and mean total Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores were also reduced by 58% and 60% (p < 0.0001), respectively. The emollient was effective whether the product was used alone or in combination with topical or systemic treatments and was well tolerated.

CONCLUSION

Our study shows that the 7-day regimen with the emollient was a universally effective treatment for pruritus and xerosis, regardless of the underlying pathology.

Construction validation of an instrument for nursing care related to cutaneous xerosis

ABSTRACT Objective: Describe the construct validation process of the instrument “Nursing care for the assessment, prevention and treatment of cutaneous xerosis in the elderly”. Method: Methodological study carried out with 101 nurses in four hospitals in the great João Pessoa, between July and September 2018. Construct validation was performed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, in addition to the consistency check by Cronbach’s alpha. Results: Through the factorial analysis, three factors of the instrument construct were defined: treatment performed for cutaneous xerosis, preventive care for cutaneous xerosis and skin evaluation, with a total explanation variance of 47.77%. In Bartlett’s sphericity test, p <0.001 was obtained, and the general Cronbach’s alpha was 0.811. Conclusion: The instrument proved to be valid and reliable, contributing to the training and practice of nurses as an integral part in the process of caring for the elderly.

Development and characterization of a babassu nut oil-based moisturizing cosmetic emulsion with a high sun protection factor

A stable moisturizing cosmetic emulsion was developed from babassu nut oil and high concentrations of sunscreens. Babassu nut oil was chosen because within the laboratory time-scale, this vegetable oil showed stable physicochemical properties (relative density, acidity index, and refracted index) and a good ratio between lauric and myristic fatty acids. The presence of these saturated fatty acids can confer specific activities to the cosmetic emulsion, such as antiviral, bactericidal, and anti-inflammatory activity. The prepared cosmetic emulsion, even after the centrifugation test (3000 rpm for 15 min), showed a creamy appearance with stable light-yellow coloration and the typical odor of babassu nut oil-based products. In the accelerated stability assays (pH, viscosity, and globule homogeneity), the cosmetic emulsion was kept at different temperatures (2.0 ± 0.2 °C (T_G), 25 ± 2 °C (T_A), and 40 ± 2 °C (T_E)) and time durations (24 hours (t₀), 7 days (t₇), 15 days (t₁₅), and 30 days (t₃₀)). Finally, developed the cosmetic emulsion was investigated for occlusive properties and in vitro sun protection factor (SPF). Both were measured at room temperature and did not change significantly under the experimental conditions employed. The maximum experimental value measured in the in vitro occlusive test was equal to 34.2 ± 2.8, and the SPF was 39 ± 1.6 (t₀) and 38 ± 2.9 (t₃₀). In agreement with European and Brazilian legislations, the obtained babassu oil-based cosmetic emulsion is classified to have a high sun protection factor.
