Globally, songs and instrumental melodies are slower and higher and use more stable pitches than speech: A Registered Report

Both music and language are found in all known human societies, yet no studies have compared similarities and differences between song, speech, and instrumental music on a global scale. In this Registered Report, we analyzed two global datasets: (i) 300 annotated audio recordings representing matched sets of traditional songs, recited lyrics, conversational speech, and instrumental melodies from our 75 coauthors speaking 55 languages; and (ii) 418 previously published adult-directed song and speech recordings from 209 individuals speaking 16 languages. Of our six preregistered predictions, five were strongly supported: Relative to speech, songs use (i) higher pitch, (ii) slower temporal rate, and (iii) more stable pitches, while both songs and speech used similar (iv) pitch interval size and (v) timbral brightness. Exploratory analyses suggest that features vary along a "musi-linguistic" continuum when including instrumental melodies and recited lyrics. Our study provides strong empirical evidence of cross-cultural regularities in music and speech.

Parametric modal regression with error in covariates

An inference procedure is proposed to provide consistent estimators of parameters in a modal regression model with a covariate prone to measurement error. A score-based diagnostic tool exploiting parametric bootstrap is developed to assess adequacy of parametric assumptions imposed on the regression model. The proposed estimation method and diagnostic tool are applied to synthetic data generated from simulation experiments and data from real-world applications to demonstrate their implementation and performance. These empirical examples illustrate the importance of adequately accounting for measurement error in the error-prone covariate when inferring the association between a response and covariates based on a modal regression model that is especially suitable for skewed and heavy-tailed response data.

High Dimensional Mode Hunting Using Pettiest Components Analysis

Principal components analysis has been used to reduce the dimensionality of datasets for a long time. In this paper, we will demonstrate that in mode detection the components of smallest variance, the pettiest components, are more important. We prove that for a multivariate normal or Laplace distribution, we obtain boxes of optimal volume by implementing "pettiest component analysis," in the sense that their volume is minimal over all possible boxes with the same number of dimensions and fixed probability. This reduction in volume produces an information gain that is measured using active information. We illustrate our results with a simulation and a search for modal patterns of digitized images of hand-written numbers using the famous MNIST database; in both cases pettiest components work better than their competitors. In fact, we show that modes obtained with pettiest components generate better written digits for MNIST than principal components.

Flexible semiparametric mode regression for time-to-event data

The distribution of time-to-event outcomes is usually right-skewed. While for symmetric and moderately skewed data the mean and median are appropriate location measures, the mode is preferable for heavily skewed data as it better represents the center of the distribution. Mode regression has been introduced for uncensored data to model the relationship between covariates and the mode of the outcome. Starting from nonparametric kernel density based mode regression, we examine the use of inverse probability of censoring weights to extend mode regression to handle right-censored data. We add a semiparametric predictor to add further flexibility to the model and we construct a pseudo Akaike's information criterion to select the bandwidth and smoothing parameters. We use simulations to evaluate the performance of our proposed approach. We demonstrate the benefit of adding mode regression to one's toolbox for analyzing survival data on a pancreatic cancer data set from a prospectively maintained cancer registry.

Modal Principal Component Analysis

Principal component analysis (PCA) is a widely used method for data processing, such as for dimension reduction and visualization. Standard PCA is known to be sensitive to outliers, and various robust PCA methods have been proposed. It has been shown that the robustness of many statistical methods can be improved using mode estimation instead of mean estimation, because mode estimation is not significantly affected by the presence of outliers. Thus, this study proposes a modal principal component analysis (MPCA), which is a robust PCA method based on mode estimation. The proposed method finds the minor component by estimating the mode of the projected data points. As a theoretical contribution, probabilistic convergence property, influence function, finite-sample breakdown point, and its lower bound for the proposed MPCA are derived. The experimental results show that the proposed method has advantages over conventional methods.
