Longitudinal associations between parental mathematics anxiety and attitudes and young children's mathematics attainment

The associations between parental mathematics anxiety and attitudes and children's mathematics attainment in early primary school were explored. Initially, parents of preschool children (Mage = 3;11 [years;months]) completed a questionnaire indexing parental mathematics anxiety and attitudes and the frequency of preschool home number experiences. The children completed mathematics assessments in their first year (n = 231, Mage = 5;2) and second year (n = 119, Mage = 6;3) of schooling and a mathematics anxiety questionnaire in their third year of schooling (n = 119, Mage = 6;7). A questionnaire indexing the frequency of primary school home number experiences was completed by 119 of the parents in their children's second year of schooling (Mage = 6;0). All indices of parental mathematics anxiety and attitudes predicted children's mathematics attainment in their first school year. These associations were independent of parental mathematics attainment and were not mediated by the frequency of preschool home number experiences. Furthermore, the positive association between preschool home number experiences and children's mathematics attainment was not weaker in the context of high parental mathematics anxiety or negative parental mathematics attitudes. One index of parental mathematics attitudes predicted children's mathematics attainment in their second school year, but this association was not significant when prior attainment was controlled. There was a stronger association between maternal mathematics anxiety and girls' attainment versus boys' attainment. Parental mathematics anxiety did not predict children's mathematics anxiety. The findings suggest that children whose parents have high mathematics anxiety or negative mathematics attitudes are more likely to have lower mathematics attainment in their first year of school. However, the mechanism underpinning this association is not yet established.

Pain Relief in Dental Local Anaesthesia with Vibrational Devices: Much Ado about Nothing? A Scoping Review

In recent years, vibrational devices have been introduced in order to reduce patient discomfort in some situations such as orofacial pain, orthodontic therapy, and injection of local anaesthetics. This article aims to review the clinical experience given by the use of these devices in local anaesthesia. The literature search was carried out on the main scientific databases for articles up to November 2022. Eligibility criteria were established, and pertinent articles selected. The results were classified by author, year, type of study, sample size and characteristics, purpose of use, type of vibrational device used, protocol used, and outcomes. Nine relevant articles were found. These are split mouth randomized clinical trials which evaluate the reduction in pain perception with different devices and different protocols of use in children, during procedures which require local analgesia by injection, compared with traditional local anaesthesia with premedication based on anaesthetic gels. Different objective and subjective scales of pain and discomfort perception were used. Although results are promising, some data, such as those relating to vibrational intensity and frequency, are not clear. Evaluations on samples varying by age and context of use are necessary to fully define the indications for this type of aid during oral rehabilitation procedures.

Como a Criança Percebe o Cirurgião-Dentista: um Estudo por meio do Desenho

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar, por meio de desenhos, como o cirurgião-dentista e o ambiente odontológico são percebidos por crianças de dois municípios paraibanos de portes populacionais diferentes, bem como o impacto de uma intervenção com práticas de promoção de saúde bucal nesta percepção. A amostra foi constituída por 89 estudantes entre 7 e 12 anos, sendo 40 crianças da zona urbana da cidade de maior porte populacional (Campina Grande, PB) e 49 da zona rural, município de menor porte populacional (Queimadas, PB). A interpretação dos desenhos foi feita por duas examinadoras de forma independente através de um roteiro para interpretação, além da aplicação do coeficiente Kappa, a fim de se verificar o nível de concordância. Obteve-se um valor de Kappa igual a 1. Como análise geral, apesar de não se verificar associação significativa ao nível de 5%, as crianças da zona rural elaboraram maior número de desenhos que transmitiram uma impressão geral negativa em comparação àquelas da zona urbana e, posteriormente às ações de promoção da saúde, não houve uma melhora na percepção da situação odontológica através dos desenhos. O cirurgião-dentista e o ambiente odontológico são vistos de forma negativa pelas crianças de ambas as localidades, em sua grande maioria, não havendo diferenças expressivas entre os dois grupos. Assim, demonstra-se a necessidade de compreensão do verdadeiro aspecto que define a construção dessa imagem, incentivando atendimentos que fortaleçam o vínculo paciente-profissional para desmistificação da imagem negativa do profissional.

Evaluating pain, fear, anxiety or stress/distress using children's drawings in paediatric dentistry: a scoping review

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature to answer the question: Can children's drawings represent a helping tool so the dentist can better understand the children's pain, fear, anxiety or stress/distress and their perception concerning the dentist and/or dental treatment?

METHODS

A scoping review was done. Cochrane Library, EMBASE, LILACS, LIVIVO, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Grey literature was searched. Cross-sectional, quasi-experimental and qualitative studies in which patients were children and adolescents were included. Two authors independently selected studies to extract data and evaluate methodological quality by using Joanna Briggs Institute tools. Data collected included: characteristics of the studies, drawing evaluation/scales, main results and conclusion.

RESULTS

Out of 1037 papers were identified in search, 25 studies verified the emotional state and the children's perceptions regarding dental environment and the dentist and were included in the narrative synthesis. The spontaneous drawings were useful to identify the children's emotions. Drawings might be considered a helping tool to identify children and adolescents' perception in relation to dental treatment. Few studies used validated instruments. There were methodological disparities among studies.

CONCLUSIONS

The drawings can be considered a useful tool in identifying children's pain, fear, anxiety or stress/distress and perceptions about the dentist and/or dental treatment. Turkish version of the faces version of the Modified Child Dental Anxiety Scale (MCDASf): translation, reliability, and validity

OBJECTIVES

To cross-culturally adapt of MCDAS_f into Turkish and to evaluate reliability and validity of the Turkish version of MCDAS_f using explorative factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to form a less time consuming and easy to understand tool for measuring dental anxiety.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 300 children (174 females, 126 males) aged 6-12 years who were recruited at the Department of Paediatric Dentistry in RTEU at the first visit participated in the present study. For the internal consistency reliability, Cronbach's alpha was calculated. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated for test-retest reliability (n=67). Construct validity was determined by comparing with the Venham Picture Test (VPT). The factor structure was examined using EFA. CFA was used for dimensionality. The cut-off points of the Turkish version of MCDAS_f were plotted using a ROC curve.

RESULTS

The Turkish version of MCDAS_f showed high internal consistency (0.703) and an excellent ICC value (0.827). Good correlations were found between the global scores of MCDAS_f and VPT (r=0.632). Three factors were identified from EFA and verified with CFA. Discriminant validity was supported by high scores of females and younger children (p<0.05). The cut-off point was assigned as >24.50. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.921 (95% CI: 0.873-0.969).

CONCLUSIONS

The Turkish version of the MCDAS_f is a reliable and valid scale that satisfied psychometric properties.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The Turkish version of MCDAS_f is a usable tool for the measurement of dental anxiety among Turkish speaking children.
