Abstract
Crosstalk within the gastric epithelium, which is closely in contact with stromal fibroblasts in the gastric mucosa, has a pivotal impact in proliferation, differentiation and transformation of the gastric epithelium. The human pathogen Helicobacter pylori colonises the gastric epithelium and represents a risk factor for gastric pathophysiology. Infection of H. pylori induces the activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), which is involved in the pro-inflammatory response but also in cell survival. In co-cultures with human gastric fibroblasts (HGF), we found that apoptotic cell death is reduced in the polarised human gastric cancer cell line NCI-N87 or in gastric mucosoids during H. pylori infection. Interestingly, suppression of apoptotic cell death in NCI-N87 cells involved an enhanced A20 expression regulated by NF-κB activity in response to H. pylori infection. Moreover, A20 acts as an important negative regulator of caspase-8 activity, which was suppressed in NCI-N87 cells during co-culture with gastric fibroblasts. Our results provide evidence for NF-κB-dependent regulation of apoptotic cell death in cellular crosstalk and highlight the protective role of gastric fibroblasts in gastric epithelial cell death during H. pylori infection.

Abstract
H. pylori infection is one of the leading causes of gastric cancer and the pathogenicity of H. pylori infection is associated with its ability to induce chronic inflammation and apoptosis resistance. While H. pylori infection-induced expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines for chronic inflammation is well studied, the molecular mechanism underlying the apoptosis resistance in infected cells is not well understood. In this study, we demonstrated that H. pylori infection-induced apoptosis resistance in gastric epithelial cells triggered by Raptinal, a drug that directly activates caspase-3. This resistance resulted from the induction of cIAP2 (encoded by BIRC3) since depletion of BIRC3 by siRNA or inhibition of cIAP2 via BV6 reversed H. pylori-suppressed caspase-3 activation. The induction of cIAP2 was regulated by H. pylori-induced BIRC3 eRNA synthesis. Depletion of BIRC3 eRNA decreased H. pylori-induced cIAP2 and reversed H. pylori-suppressed caspase-3 activation. Mechanistically, H. pylori stimulated the recruitment of bromodomain-containing factor Brd4 to the enhancer of BIRC3 and promoted BIRC3 eRNA and mRNA synthesis. Inhibition of Brd4 diminished the expression of BIRC3 eRNA and the anti-apoptotic response to H. pylori infection. Importantly, H. pylori isogenic cagA-deficient mutant failed to activate the synthesis of BIRC3 eRNA and the associated apoptosis resistance. Finally, in primary human gastric epithelial cells, H. pylori also induced resistance to Raptinal-triggered caspase-3 activation by activating the Brd4-dependent BIRC3 eRNA synthesis in a CagA-dependent manner. These results identify a novel function of Brd4 in H. pylori-mediated apoptosis resistance via activating BIRC3 eRNA synthesis, suggesting that Brd4 could be a potential therapeutic target for H. pylori-induced gastric cancer.

Abstract
The human pathogen Helicobacter pylori infects more than half of the world’s population and is a paradigm for persistent yet asymptomatic infection but increases the risk for chronic gastritis and gastric adenocarcinoma. For successful colonization, H. pylori needs to subvert the host cell death response, which serves to confine pathogen infection by killing infected cells and preventing malignant transformation. Infection of gastric epithelial cells by H. pylori provokes direct and fast activation of the proinflammatory and survival factor NF-κB, which regulates target genes, such as CXCL8, BIRC3 and TNFAIP3. However, it is not known how H. pylori exploits NF-κB activation and suppresses the inflammatory response and host apoptotic cell death, in order to avert the innate immune response and avoid cell loss, and thereby enhance colonization to establish long-term infection. Here we assign for the first time that H. pylori and also Campylobacter jejuni-induced ubiquitin-editing enzyme A20 bifunctionally terminates NF-κB activity and negatively regulates apoptotic cell death. Mechanistically, we show that the deubiquitinylase activity of A20 counteracts cullin3-mediated K63-linked ubiquitinylation of procaspase-8, therefore restricting the activity of caspase-8. Interestingly, another inducible NF-κB target gene, the scaffold protein p62, ameliorates the interaction of A20 with procaspase-8. In conclusion, pathogen-induced de novo synthesis of A20 regulates the shut-off of the survival factor NF-κB but, on the other hand, also impedes caspase-8-dependent apoptotic cell death so as to promote the persistence of pathogens.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori infection is an initiating factor in the development of gastric cancer. Gastric cancer can be divided into two groups on the basis of H. pylori serological status; seropositive H. pylori status predicts favorable prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. By using the protein pathway array, we identified 20 differentially expressed proteins in primary gastric cancer tissues between the H. pylori-seropositive and H. pylori-seronegative groups. Our results indicate that both brassinosteroid insensitive 1-associated kinase 1 and calpastatin are favorable prognostic factors in H. pylori-seropositive gastric cancer patients. In contrast, dachshund homolog 1 is a favorable prognostic factor in H. pylori-seronegative gastric cancer patients. Different signaling pathways were found to be altered between H. pylori-seropositive and H. pylori-seronegative gastric cancer, which may account for the different tumorigenesis and outcomes between these two subsets of patients.

Abstract
Gastrokine 1 (GKN1) is involved in the replenishment of the surface lumen epithelial cell layer, in maintaining the mucosal integrity, and could play a role in cell proliferation and differentiation. In fact, after injury of the gastric mucosa, restoration may occur very rapidly in the presence of GKN1. In contrast, if the protein is downregulated, the repair process may be hampered; however, application of GKN1 to gastrointestinal cells promoted epithelial restoration. Because GKN1 possesses some mitogenic effects on intestinal epithelial cells (IEC-6) whereas this protein was also capable of inhibiting proliferation in gastric cancer cells (MKN28), we decided to study its involvement in apoptosis to understand the role of GKN1 in the modulation of inflammatory damage or tumorigenesis in gastric mucosa. We found by cytofluorimetry, Western blot and RT-PCR that the overexpression of GKN1 in gastric cancer cell lines (AGS and MKN28) stimulated the expression of Fas receptor. Moreover, compared to control cells, a significant increase of apoptosis, evaluated by TUNEL, was observed when GKN1 transfected cells were treated with a monoclonal antibody (IgM) anti-Fas. The activation of Fas expression was also observed by the overexpression of GKN1 in other cancer cell lines. Moreover, in GKN1-overexpressing gastric cancer cells exposed to FasL, the activation of caspase-3 was also observed by Western blot and fluorescence assays. Our data represent the first report for GKN1 as modulator of apoptotic signals and suggest that GKN1 might play an important role for tissue repair during the early stages of neoplastic transformation.

Abstract
Background Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a member of the tumour necrosis factor cytokine family that induces apoptosis upon binding to its death domain containing receptors, TRAIL receptor 1 (DR4) and TRAIL receptor 2 (DR5). Expression of TRAIL receptors is higher in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) as compared to normal colorectal mucosa and targeted therapy with TRAIL leads to preferential killing of tumor cells sparing normal cells. Methods We investigated the expression of TRAIL and its receptors in a tissue microarray cohort of 448 Middle Eastern CRC. We also studied the correlation between TRAIL receptors and various clinico-pathological features including key molecular alterations and overall survival. Results CRC subset with TRAIL-R1 expression was associated with a less aggressive phenotype characterized by early stage (p = 0.0251) and a histology subtype of adenocarcinomas (p = 0.0355). Similarly CRC subset with TRAIL-R2 expression was associated with a well-differentiated tumors (p < 0.0001), histology subtype of adenocarcinomas (p = 0.0010) and tumors in left colon (p = 0.0009). Over expression of pro apoptotic markers: p27KIP1 and KRAS4A isoforms was significantly higher in CRC subset with TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2 expression; TRAIL-R1 expression was also associated with cleaved caspase-3(p = 0.0011). Interestingly, TRAIL-R2 expression was associated with a microsatellite stable (MS--S/L) phenotype (p = 0.0003) and with absence of KRAS mutations (p = 0.0481). Conclusion TRAIL-R1 expression was an independent prognostic marker for better survival in all CRC samples and even in the CRC group that received adjuvant therapy. The biological effects of TRAIL in CRC models, its enhancement of chemosensitivity towards standard chemotherapeutic agents and the effect of endogenous TRAIL receptor levels on survival make TRAIL an extremely attractive therapeutic target.

Abstract
We have previously shown that amylin has a protective effect upon the damaged rat gastric mucosa via a cytokine-mediated mechanism. Here, the effects of amylin on the proapoptotic cytokine TNF-related-apoptosis-inducing-ligand (TRAIL) were tested in the rat gastric mucosa damaged by reserpine administration in vivo. Intraperitoneal administration of reserpine in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats resulted in increased TRAIL expression in the gastric mucosa. Immunohistochemistry showed that the TRAIL death-receptor 5 (DR5) was constitutively expressed by the mucosa cells. Western blot showed that pretreatment of reserpine-treated rats with amylin was associated with attenuated expression of TRAIL. In the same samples, we also investigated about TRAIL-related signaling and observed that activation of caspases-8 and -3 occurs in parallel to increased TRAIL expression in rats treated with reserpine. Similarly to the latter, activation of caspases was attenuated in rats pretreated with amylin. Treatment with reserpine was associated with increased expression of the proapoptotic protein Bax, whereas that of the antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 was significantly decreased. Amylin prevented the effects of reserpine on these genes. Reserpine sets into motion mechanisms of apoptosis in the rat gastric mucosa, which appear mediated, at least in part, by TRAIL. In addition, TRAIL downstream signaling is activated along with subversion of gene expression related to apoptosis. Amylin was able to prevent detrimental effects of reserpine. Finally, amylin and related molecules may be envisioned as protective agent in gastric mucosa damage.

Abstract
Cancers in the gastrointestinal system account for a large proportion of malignancies and cancer-related deaths with gastric cancer and colorectal cancer being the most common ones. For those patients in whom surgical resection is not possible, other therapeutic approaches are necessary. Disordered apoptosis has been linked to cancer development and treatment resistance. Apoptosis occurs via extrinsic or intrinsic signaling each triggered and regulated by many different molecular pathways. In recent years, the selective induction of apoptosis in tumor cells has been increasingly recognized as a promising approach for cancer therapy. A detailed understanding of the molecular pathways involved in the regulation of apoptosis is essential for developing novel effective therapeutic approaches. Apoptosis can be induced by many different approaches including activating cell surface death receptors (for example, Fas, TRAIL and TNF receptors), inhibiting cell survival signaling (such as EGFR, MAPK and PI3K), altering apoptosis threshold by modulating pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic members of the Bcl-2 family, down-regulating anti-apoptosis proteins (such as XIAP, survivin and c-IAP2), and using other pro-apoptotic agents. In this review, the authors reviewed the currently reported apoptosis-targeting approaches in gastrointestinal cancers.

Abstract
AIM: To observe the effects of rabbit serum containing Qi-replenishing heat-clearing formula (Yiqi Qingre Formula) and its decomposed recipes on type ⅠHelicobacter pylori (H pylori) -induced GES-1 cell apoptosis and to explore its mechanism.
METHODS: Rabbit sera saline, containing amoxicillin, Yiqi Qingre Formula, Huangqi or Huangqin were prepared. The model of type Ⅰ H pylori-induced GES-1 cell injury was established and co-cultured with the individually complete culture fluid of 100 mL/L rabbit serum for 48 h. Then, cells were collected and fixed, followed by identification of apoptosis using flow cytometry and Hoechst33258 fluorescent staining.
RESULTS: Apoptosis rate of type ⅠH pylori-infected GES-1 cells remarkedly increased in the saline group, while it was decreased either by amoxicillin, Yiqi Qingre Formula, Huangqi or Huangqin (1.3633 ± 0.4229, 2.1925 ± 0.6779, 1.7967 ± 0.6987, 1.4740 ± 0.4156 vs 16.6229 ± 8.5087, P < 0.01 or 0.05). The coincidence rate determined using flow cytometry and Hoechst33258 fluorescent staining was high.
CONCLUSION: Yiqi Qingre Formula has the effects of alleviating type ⅠH pylori-induced gastric epithelial cell injury through inhibition of cell apoptosis, thus maintaining cell growth.

Abstract
Goal of this study was to investigate the pro-apoptotic properties of RRR-gamma-tocopherol (gammaT) in human breast cancer cells. gammaT was shown to induce cancer cells but not normal cells to undergo apoptosis, sensitize cancer cells to Tumor necrosis factor-Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand (TRAIL)-induced apoptosis, and increase death receptor 5 (DR5) mRNA, protein and cell surface expression. Knockdown of DR5 attenuated gammaT-induced apoptosis. Investigations of post-receptor signaling showed: caspase-8, Bid and Bax activation, increases in mitochondria permeability, cytochrome c release and caspase-9 activation. Thus, gammaT is a potent pro-apoptotic agent for human breast cancer cells inducing apoptosis via activation of DR5-mediated apoptotic pathway.

Abstract
Gastric infection by Helicobacter pylori is an important risk factor for the development of gastric cancer. Recent research has identified both bacterial and host factors related to increased gastric cancer risk, including virulence-associated genes located in the cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island and the vacuolating toxin A exotoxin, as well as polymorphisms in key cytokines and cytokine receptors that mediate the host's gastric inflammatory response. Early randomized trials indicate that eradicating H. pylori with antibiotics may prevent gastric cancer, although the effects so far have been modest, and are probably confined to individuals who had not developed preneoplastic lesions at the time of eradication. Targeting H. pylori to prevent gastric cancer may be best achieved through vaccination, better understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of H. pylori-associated carcinogenesis and additional chemopreventive strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori is related to the pathogenesis of the noncardia carcinoma of the stomach. In this study we investigated the mechanisms of H. pylori-induced apoptosis in T lymphocytes, which could explain a mechanism of immune evasion facilitating chronic inflammation of the mucosa and gastric carcinogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The supernatant of H. pylori culture was used to study the mechanism of apoptosis induction in human leukaemia T cell lines Jurkat and CEM and in primary T cells. The cytotoxin associated gene A (CagA) and vacuolating cytotoxin A (Vac A) positive bacterial strain H. pylori 60190 (CagA(+), VacA(+)) and as a control the less toxic H. pylori strain Tx30a (CagA(-), VacA(-)) were used to produce the supernatant. Cell death was determined by DNA fragmentation and protein expression by Western blot. RESULTS H. pylori 60190-induced apoptosis was neither blocked by inhibition of the death ligands TRAIL (TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand), CD95L/FasL and TNF-alpha (tumour necrosis factor-a) in wild type Jurkat cells nor in FADD(def) (Fas-associated death domain protein) and caspase-8(def) subclones of the Jurkat cell line. Yet, the pancaspase inhibitor zVAD-fmk could inhibit up to 90% of H. pylori-induced apoptosis. Stable transfection of Jurkat wild type cells with Bcl-x(L and) Bcl-2 resulted in marked reduction of H. pylori-induced apoptosis, showing that the mitochondrial pathway is the key regulator. This is supported by the finding that surviving primary human lymphocytes upregulate Bcl-2 when exposed to H. pylori supernatant. CONCLUSIONS H. pylori-induced apoptosis of T cells is mediated by the mitochondrial pathway and could create a local environment that facilitates life-long infection by immune evasion.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Although chronic Helicobacter pylori infection is the strongest known risk factor for development of gastric adenocarcinoma, only a small proportion of infected individuals will ever develop tumours. This article discusses various bacterial, host and environmental factors which may influence an individual's susceptibility. RECENT FINDINGS Recent research on bacterial virulence factors has focussed upon the cag pathogenicity island, particularly its roles in regulating epithelial growth and adhesion. Studies of host genetic factors have included several analyses of polymorphisms in inflammatory cytokines in human cohorts. Animal studies have recently clarified the roles of dysregulated epithelial apoptosis, proliferation and differentiation pathways during gastric carcinogenesis, and novel experiments involving H. felis infection of bone marrow transplanted irradiated mice have suggested that gastric cancer may originate from bone marrow-derived stem cells. Important roles for signalling between epithelial and mesenchymal cells, particularly myofibroblasts, are also emerging. Recent research on the importance of environmental factors has demonstrated how helminth coinfection may protect against atrophic gastritis and T helper type 1 responses. SUMMARY Complex interactions between several bacterial, host genetic and environmental factors determine whether H. pylori infected individuals develop gastric carcinoma. The importance of bone marrow stem cell engraftment during human gastric neoplasia is an area requiring urgent investigation.

Abstract
RRR-alpha-tocopherol ether linked acetic acid analog (alpha-TEA), is a potential chemotherapeutic agent for ovarian cancer. Pro-death and pro-life signaling pathways were studied to understand the anti-cancer actions of alpha-TEA on cisplatin-sensitive (A2780S) and -resistant (A2780/cp70R) human ovarian cancer cells. Both cell lines were refractory to Fas; whereas, alpha-TEA sensitized them to Fas signaling. alpha-TEA increased levels of Fas message, protein and membrane-associated Fas. Neutralizing antibodies to Fas or Fas L partially blocked alpha-TEA-induced apoptosis. alpha-TEA induced prolonged activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and its substrate c-Jun; Bax conformational change; and cleavage of Bid and caspases-8, -9 and -3. Chemical inhibitors of JNK, and caspases blocked alpha-TEA-induced apoptosis. alpha-TEA decreased phosphorylation of protein kinase B (Akt/PKB) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2), as well as cellular FLICE-like inhibitory protein (c-FLIP) and Survivin protein levels. Knockdown of Akt and ERK activity using phosphoinositide- 3-kinase (PI3K) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MKK1) inhibitors enhanced alpha-TEA-induced apoptosis. Over-expression of constitutively active Akt2 and MKK1 blocked alpha-TEA-induced apoptosis. Collectively, data show alpha-TEA to be a potent apoptotic inducer of both cisplatin-sensitive and -resistant human ovarian cancer cells via activating death receptor Fas signaling and suppressing anti-apoptotic AKT and ERK targets.

Abstract
Numerous cellular and molecular events have been described in development of gastric cancer. In this article, we overviewed roles of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection on some of the important events in gastric carcinogenesis and discussed whether these cellular and molecular events are reversible after cure of the infection. There are several bacterial components affecting gastric epithelial kinetics and promotion of gastric carcinogenesis. The bacterium also increases risks of genetic instability and mutations due to NO and other reactive oxygen species. Epigenetic silencing of tumor suppressor genes such as RUNX3 may alter the frequency of phenotype change of gastric glands to those with intestinal metaplasia. Host factors such as increased expression of growth factors, cytokines and COX-2 have been also reported in non-cancerous tissue in H pylori-positive subjects. It is noteworthy that most of the above phenomena are reversed after the cure of the infection. However, some of them including overexpression of COX-2 continue to exist and may increase risks for carcinogenesis in metaplastic or dysplastic mucosa even after successful H pylori eradication. Thus, H pylori eradication may not completely abolish the risk for gastric carcinogenesis. Efficiency of the cure of the infection in suppressing gastric cancer depends on the timing and the target population, and warrant further investigation.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effects of Helicobacter pylori infection on gastric epithelial cell kinetics in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). METHODS Forty-four patients were enrolled in this study and divided into four groups with respect to their Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and CRF status. Groups were labeled as follows: 1a: normal renal function, H pylori negative (n = 12), 1b: normal renal function, H pylori positive (n = 11), 2a: CRF, H pylori negative (n = 10), 2b: CRF, H pylori positive (n = 11). Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was done in all the patients involved in the study. During endoscopical investigation, antral biopsy specimens were taken from each patient. In order to evaluate the cell apoptosis and proliferation in gastric epithelial cells, Bax and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) labeling indexes (LI) were assessed with immunohistochemical staining method. RESULTS For groups 1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b, mean Bax LI was identified as 34.4+/-13.7, 44.1+/-16.5, 46.3+/-20.5, 60.7+/-13.8, respectively and mean PCNA LI was identified as 36.2+/-17.2, 53.6+/-25.6, 59.5+/-25.6, 67.2+/-22, respectively. When the one-way ANOVA test was applied, statistically significant differences were detected between the groups for both Bax LI (P = 0.004 <0.01) and PCNA LI (P = 0.009 <0.01). When groups were compared further in terms of Bax LI and PCNA LI with Tukeyos HSD test for multiple pairwise comparisons, statistically significant difference was observed only between groups 1a and 2b (P = 0.006 <0.01). CONCLUSION In gastric epithelial cells, expression of both the pre-apoptotic protein Bax and the proliferation marker PCNA increase with H pylori infection. This increase is more evident in patients with uremia. These findings suggest that uremia accelerates apoptosis and proliferation in gastric epithelial cells.

Abstract
Many epidemiological reports indicate that Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection plays an important role in gastric carcinogenesis. Several genetic and epigenetic alterations contribute to the initiation, promotion, and progression of the cancer cells in a multi-step manner. H pylori is known to induce chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa. Its products, including superoxides, participate in the DNA damage followed by initiation, and the inflammation-derived cytokines and growth factors contribute to the promotion of gastric carcinogenesis. By eradicating H pylori, gastric inflammation can be cured; the therapy diminishes the levels not only of inflammatory cell infiltration, but also atrophy/intestinal metaplasia in part. A randomized controlled trial revealed that the eradication therapy diminished the gastric cancer prevalence in cases without pre-cancerous conditions. In addition, recent epidemiological studies from Japanese groups demonstrated that the development of gastric cancer, especially of the intestinal type, was decreased by successful eradication therapy, although these were designed in a non-randomized manner. However, it should be mentioned that endoscopic detection is the only way to evaluate the degree of gastric carcinogenesis. We have reported that the endoscopic and histological morphologies could be modified by eradication therapy and it might contribute to the prevalence of gastric cancer development. Considering the biological nature of cancer cell proliferation, it is considered that a sufficiently long-term follow-up would be essential to discuss the anticancer effect of eradication therapy.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the effect of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) sonicated extract on the apoptosis of rat gastric epithelial cells as well as the expression of apoptosis-related genes in vitro.
METHODS: H. pylori sonicated extract from strain Sydney SS-1 was cultured with OUMS-37, a kind of immortalized rat gastric cell lines. Apoptosis of the cells was confirmed according to specific changes of morphology and DNA ladder 24-48 h after co-incubation. The expression of P53 protein was detected by Western blotting and the expression of bax and bcl-2 mRNA were observed by Northern blotting.
RESULTS: The specific morphology of the cells such as shrinkage, condensation, margination of nuclear chromatin and apoptotic bodies were observed under light microscope. DNA ladder was manifested by fragment analysis. Western blotting showed a dose-dependent increased expression of wild-type P53 protein and Northern blotting showed a dose-pendent increased expression of bax mRNA and reduced expression of bcl-2 mRNA in the treated cells.
CONCLUSION: H. pylori sonicated extract induces the apoptosis in vitro through up-regulation of wild-type P53 protein and bax mRNA expression, and down-regulation of bcl-2 mRNA expression, suggesting that H. pylori infection may interrupt the balance between proliferation and apoptosis of the gastric epithelial cells, which plays a key role in gastric carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The prognosis of stomach cancer with advanced stage remains poor. New biomarkers of the disease that may contribute to establish the potential screening strategy would be of value for the early detection of individuals at high risk of the disease. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, nested case-control analysis among apparently healthy men and women who were followed for up to 8 years in the Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) Study, to evaluate serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I, II, and binding protein 3 (IFG-I, IGF-II, and IGFBP-3), transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF β1), soluble fas (sFas) and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) in 210 stomach cancer cases diagnosed in the JACC Study in relation to those levels in their 410 controls. RESULTS: Among 6 serum biomarkers tested for case-control differences, only sFas level in female stomach cancer cases was significantly higher than that of controls (2.22 pg/ml vs. 2.04 pg/mL, respectively; P = 0.013 by two-way analysis of covariance controlling for matching variable). CONCLUSION: None of the biomarkers consistently predicted future risk of stomach cancer in both men and women in the present analysis. Serum sFas level in women, however, should be studied much more thoroughly whether it provides meaningful refinement of risk stratification, or it elucidate the mechanisms of tumorigenesis in women.
