Aplasia cutis congenita presenting as a familial triad of atrophic alopecia, ocular defects and a peculiar scarring tendency of the skin

Ocular pterygium--digital keloid dysplasia

We describe an adolescent Peruvian male with marked, aggressive ingrowth of conjunctiva (pterygium-like) over the cornea associated with keloid formation on his distal limbs. He has in addition camptodactyly of all fingers and to some extent of his toes, and unusual skin pigmentations. He resembles an earlier described family from Norway in which a mother and two children showed a similar combination of signs. We present the follow-up of the Norwegian family. The entity resembles the Penttinen syndrome but can be differentiated due to the early aging in the latter, which is lacking in the presently reported entity. We suggest naming this entity ocular pterygium-digital keloid dysplasia. The condition follows likely an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.

Aplasia cutis congenita, high myopia, and cone-rod dysfunction in two sibs: a new autosomal recessive disorder

We report on a brother and a sister with congenital nystagmus, cone-rod dysfunction, high myopia, and aplasia cutis congenita on the midline of the scalp vertex. To our knowledge this familial oculocutaneous condition, transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait, has not been reported previously.

Aplasia cutis congenita and associated disorders: an update

We present an update of disorders in which aplasia cutis congenita is a feature. Localization of the lesion, important other features, and possible etiology are tabulated. Disorders are classified as chromosomal, monogenic, teratological/exogenous, and unknown. Points of particular interest in history taking and examination of patients with aplasia cutis congenita are presented.

Aplasia cutis congenita with chromosome 12q abnormality

A 32 week, small for dates baby with aplasia cutis congenita had an unbalanced translocation, being monosomic for distal 12q and trisomic for distal 1q. As far as is known, the association between extensive skin defects and a chromosomal abnormality has not been reported before. Keratin genes have been located in a different area of 12q, but this case may indicate other candidate areas to explore. Karyotyping should be undertaken in all babies with aplasia cutis.

Oculo-ectodermal syndrome: a new case

We report on a girl with aplasia cutis congenita, epibulbar dermoids, and macrocephaly. To our opinion she has the same ocular-ectodermal syndrome as described by Toriello et al. [Am J Med Genet 45: 764-766, 1993].
