Abstract
Congenital self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (CSHLCH) is a rare type of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Here, we report two cases of CSHLCH. The cases presented solitary and multiple skin lesions of various sizes. The diagnosis was confirmed by skin biopsies. The lesions disappeared after one to two months without therapeutic intervention. No BRAF mutations in the skin lesions were detected, and soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) was normal in both cases. Recent studies suggested that the state of differentiation of the precursor cell in which BRAF mutations occur is associated with the clinical types and prognosis of the disease. Further investigation should be needed to elucidate the association between the progression and regression of CSHLCH and BRAF mutation.

Abstract
Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an inflammatory neoplasia of myeloid precursor cells driven by mutations in the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway. When disease involves the skin, LCH most commonly presents as a seborrheic dermatitis or eczematous eruption on the scalp and trunk. Evaluation for involvement of other organ systems is essential, because 9 of 10 patients presenting with cutaneous disease also have multisystem involvement. Clinical manifestations range from isolated disease with spontaneous resolution to life-threatening multisystem disease. Prognosis depends on involvement of risk organs (liver, spleen, and bone marrow) at diagnosis, particularly on presence of organ dysfunction, and response to initial therapy. Systemic treatment incorporating steroids and cytostatic drugs for at least one year has improved prognosis of multisystem LCH and represents the current standard of care.

Abstract
Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis (CSHRH) is a rare, cutaneous, self-limited form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Whereas multiple lesions are common, a solitary lesion is rare. A 14-day-old neonate presented with a solitary, 5-mm, oval, reddish, and eroded papule with crust on the left thigh that had existed since birth. No systemic involvement was found. Histopathology revealed dense infiltration of large histiocytes with scattered eosinophils and lymphocytes in the dermis. Immunohistochemistry showed S-100 and CD1a positivity. Two months later, the skin lesion involuted spontaneously, without evidence of recurrence and extracutaneous involvement. On the basis of the characteristic clinical course and typical histopathological findings, a diagnosis of solitary CSHRH was made.

Abstract
Congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis is a rare, congenital, benign, self-healing variant of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. It usually appears as multiple papules or nodules; however, occurrence of the solitary type is very rare. We report on a case of solitary congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis in a 29-day-old girl who presented with a papule on her sole. Two months later, the lesion regressed with a slight scar. Based upon clinical and histologic findings, we made a diagnosis of solitary congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis. In this report, we summarized reported cases of solitary congenital self-healing retioculohistiocytosis in Korea with a review of the literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-healing solitary-lesion Hashimoto-Pritzker histiocytosis (HPH), a rare, congenital, purely cutaneous Langerhans histiocytosis (only 30 cases reported), carries a good prognosis. OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of solitary HPH. METHODS To conduct a retrospective, observational study on 8 affected newborns. RESULTS For these infants, with otherwise normal physical examinations, the unique nodule or papule (5-15-mm diameter) was congenital. Systematic routine histological examination of the lesions found dermal infiltrates constituted predominantly of histiocytes with lymphocytes and eosinophils. Protein S100 and CD1a immunolabelings, done for 7 patients, were positive. Electron microscopy (n = 4) observed Birbeck granules. No visceral involvement or recurrence has ever been observed after 2-12 years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Because of its self-healing nature, congenital solitary HPH frequency has probably been underestimated. In the absence of systemic involvement, regular physical examination for at least 2 years seems a valid approach.

Abstract
We describe a child with a solitary dendritic cell (DC) tumor positive for S-100 protein, CD1a, and HLA-DR with the clinical and histopathologic features of a so-called solitary variant of congenital self-healing Hashimoto-Pritzker reticulohistiocytosis (CSHRH). CSHRH is a spontaneously regressing, benign form of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and was thought to be a histiocytosis consisting of precursor Langerhans cells. In our study the tumor cells did not express CD68, indicating that they represent mature DCs. Because of the negative finding for Langerin, it cannot be assessed whether the tumor consists of terminally mature Langerhans cells that have lost Langerin expression upon maturation or of mature dermal DCs. This case demonstrates that the progress in DC biology necessitates reevaluation of our knowledge of LCH to better understand the different variants of the disease. Therefore the literature on CSHRH is reviewed in light of present knowledge on cutaneous DC immunology.

Abstract
Congenital self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (CSHLCH) is a rare variant of Langerhans cell histiocytosis, presenting at birth or in the neonatal period with cutaneous lesions that involute spontaneously. Affected infants are otherwise well with no systemic illness. A case of CSHLCH, probably the first case report from India, is described. The patient presented on the third day of life with multiple papulonodular lesions over the body, with no systemic involvement. The lesions spontaneously regressed by 6 months of age, with no evidence of relapse at 1 year of age. Although CSHLCH is a benign and self-limited condition, long-term follow-up for evidence of relapse is emphasized.

Abstract
The pathophysiology and pathogenesis of congenital self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (CSHLCH) as well as that of the other types of Langerhans cell histiocytosis is not well understood. Some authors postulate deregulated immunologic mechanisms that result in overproduction of cytokines. We examined a neonate with disseminated papulonodular eruptions containing lymphoid aggregates of B lymphocytes in the chorial layer. The diagnosis of a CSHLCH was made and the follow-up showed a complete involution of the eruptions, leaving atrophic lesions in the sites corresponding to the initial findings. We discuss a possible imbalance of the immune response as a pathogenetic mechanism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Single-system (SS) disease is the most common presentation in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) with a heterogenous clinical picture and course. Mostly bone and rarely skin or lymph nodes are involved. PROCEDURE One hundred and seventy patients with SS-LCH were registered in the DAL-HX 83/90 studies. They were diagnosed according to uniform diagnostic criteria and followed by a standardised schedule. RESULTS Single bone lesions were most common (68%), followed by multiple bone lesions (19%), isolated skin disease (11%), and isolated lymph node involvement (4 patients). In the detection of bone lesions radiographic skeletal survey proved to be superior to bone scan (97% vs. 82%). Treatment comprised surgery, irradiation and local instillation of steroids, and standardised chemotherapy for multifocal bone disease. After initial therapy 81% of the patients remained disease free. Reactivations restricted to the skeleton occurred in 18% of both unifocal and multifocal bone disease. Two skin patients had a chronic course. Fatality occurred only in one infant with skin disease who progressed to multi-system disease. Twenty-five percent of all patients developed permanent consequences, which were already present at diagnosis in about half of these patients and comprised mainly orthopedic problems related to lesional sites. Diabetes insipidus occurred in 3% and anterior pituitary dysfunction in 2% of the patients. CONCLUSIONS The course in SS%LCH was benign. In bone disease reactivations remained restricted to the skeleton and did not influence survival. However, reactivations had an impact on morbidity, as permanent consequences were mostly related to the site of disease activity. Med Pediatr Oncol 2001;37:108-114.

Abstract
Red-brown papules developing during the neonatal period may present a diagnostic dilemma. The Darier sign has been a reliable feature in the diagnosis of mastocytosis. However, the cutaneous infiltrate of Hashimoto-Pritzker Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) may contain a large number of mast cells, leading to confusion both clinically and histologically. We report an infant who developed red-brown papules of Hashimoto-Pritzker LCH during the neonatal period and presented with a positive Darier sign and acute urticaria.

Abstract
The histiocytic disorders are uncommon, have a wide spectrum, and are poorly understood. We describe seven cases developing in infancy, seen during a period of 9 years at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. Clinically the patients had multiple papules over the face, trunk, and extremities that developed at birth or during infancy. Histopathologic examinations revealed an infiltrate of many histiocytic cells in the upper dermis with or without epidermotropism. Four cases were classified as congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis in that the histiocytes were identified as Langerhans cells by positive immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein, ultrastructural studies showing many Birbeck granules, and spontaneous regression of the lesions within 1-4 months. One infant with a solitary lesion on the forehead was diagnosed as solitary, congenital, indeterminate cell histiocytoma because the histiocytic cells were S-100 protein positive, but meticulous ultrastructural studies did not detect Birbeck granules. The lesion was removed by shave excision. Two cases were classified as generalized eruptive histiocytoma. The histiocytic cells were S-100 protein negative and ultrastructurally Birbeck granules were absent. In one patient, eyeball- or popcornlike lysosomal structures were seen. The lesions regressed completely.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Congenital 'self-healing' Langerhans' cell histiocytosis of Hashimoto-Pritzker is a rare disease occurring mainly in the neonatal period. CASE REPORT We report on the case of a newborn with widespread eruption since birth, consisting of nodules, papulonodules, sometimes with ulcerations and scabs, concerning all the body, with a predilection for the cephalic area and the scalp, without general abnormalities. The clinical examination, histopathological data, immunohistochemistry, and the benign evolution in nine-, 18- and 24-month periods without particular treatment define the diagnosis of congenital self-healing Langerhans' cell histiocytosis of Hashimoto-Pritzker. CONCLUSION The position of this disease among the Langherans' cell histiocytoses is probably situated at the benign pole. This is a benign self-healing disease restricted to the skin and the prognosis is good (self-involution). It is important to eliminate a malignant form of other Langerhans' cell histiocytosis such as Letterer-Siwe disease by a checkup searching for a visceral disease. The good prognosis should not lead to forget the possibility of error or forms of relapses; it is therefore imperative to have a rigorous, regular and especially long-term follow-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital self-healing Langerhans cell histiocytosis (CSHLCH) is a rare condition, initially seen at birth or in the neonatal period, with generalized papules, vesicles, or nodules. Affected infants are otherwise well and the skin lesions tend to involute spontaneously within weeks to months. METHODS Twelve patients with CSHLCH were seen from 1989 to 1998. RESULTS Eight patients were girls and four were boys and all presented with lesions at birth which disappeared 1-3 months later. The lesions consisted of numerous brownish-red papules, papulovesicles, crusts, and nodules distributed on the face, limbs, palms, and soles. Two patients had oral mucosal lesions, and one had ulcerated lesions that evolved leaving hypochromic macules. Light microscopy showed a histiocytic infiltrate in the papillary dermis with epidermotrophism. Two cases were studied by electron microscopy: the Langerhans cells showed Birbeck granules and laminated corpus in their cytoplasm. Immunomarking with S100 protein was performed in all 12 patients and was positive. CD1 was also tested in four cases and was positive. CONCLUSIONS Because CSHLCH is a rare condition, we emphasize that, although it is usually a benign, self-limited entity, careful evaluation for systemic disease must be performed and long-term follow-up must be carried out to detect evidence of relapse or progression of the disease; this is essential when treating these patients.

Abstract
Congenital self-healing histiocytosis (CSHH), and especially the solitary variant, is a rare primary skin disorder. We report on a newborn with a congenital solitary ulcerated skin nodule. Extracutaneous involvement was not found. A skin biopsy was performed at the age of 44 days and revealed a dense dermal infiltrate of large histiocytic cells. Immunohistochemical study revealed that the cells of the dermal infiltrate were Langerhans' cells which were strongly positive for S- 100 and negative for lysozyme, leukocyte common antigen and alpha-1-antichymotrypsin. The skin lesion involuted spontaneously over the next month without any treatment. The clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical results fulfilled the criteria of solitary CSHH. We herein report the first case of CSHH in Taiwan and the twelfth case of solitary CSHH in the world.
