Proteomes of Micro- and Nanosized Carriers Engineered from Red Blood Cells

Red blood cell (RBC)-derived systems offer a potential platform for delivery of biomedical cargos. Although the importance of specific proteins associated with the biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of these particles has been recognized, it remains to be explored whether some of the key transmembrane and cytoskeletal proteins responsible for immune-modulatory effects and mechanical integrity of the particles are retained. Herein, using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and quantitative tandem mass tag mass spectrometry in conjunction with bioinformatics analysis, we have examined the proteomes of micro- and nanosized erythrocyte ghosts doped with indocyanine green and compared them with those of RBCs. We identified a total of 884 proteins in each set of RBCs, micro-, and nanosized particles, of which 8 and 45 proteins were expressed at significantly different relative abundances when comparing micro-sized particles vs RBCs and nanosized particles vs RBCs, respectively. We found greater differences in relative abundances of some mechano-modulatory proteins, such as band 3 and protein 4.2, and immunomodulatory proteins like CD44, CD47, and CD55 in nanosized particles as compared to RBCs. Our findings highlight that the methods utilized in fabricating RBC-based systems can induce substantial effects on their proteomes. Erythrocyte-Derived Nanoparticles with Folate Functionalization for Near Infrared Pulsed Laser-Mediated Photo-Chemotherapy of Tumors

Despite its common side effects and varying degrees of therapeutic success, chemotherapy remains the gold standard method for treatment of cancer. Towards developing a new therapeutic approach, we have engineered nanoparticles derived from erythrocytes that contain indocyanine green as a photo-activated agent that enables near infrared photothermal heating, and doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) as a chemotherapeutic drug. We hypothesize that milliseconds pulsed laser irradiation results in rapid heating and photo-triggered release of DOX, providing a dual photo-chemo therapeutic mechanism for tumor destruction. Additionally, the surface of the nanoparticles is functionalized with folate to target the folate receptor-α on tumor cells to further enhance the therapeutic efficacy. Using non-contract infrared radiometry and absorption spectroscopy, we have characterized the photothermal response and photostability of the nanoparticles to pulsed laser irradiation. Our in vitro studies show that these nanoparticles can mediate photo-chemo killing of SKOV3 ovarian cancer cells when activated by pulsed laser irradiation. We further demonstrate that this dual photo-chemo therapeutic approach is effective in reducing the volume of tumor implants in mice and elicits an apoptotic response. This treatment modality presents a promising approach in destruction of small tumor nodules.

A proposed scoring system for facial port-wine stain evaluation: Facial port-wine stain area and severity index

BACKGROUND

Port-wine stain (PWS) is a congenital capillary malformation that often occurs on the face. Feasible and quantitative evaluation of facial port-wine stain (FPWS) can significantly impact its clinical management and aid in future research.

AIM

To develop and validate an easy-to-use scoring system for FPWS evaluation.

METHODS

A facial port-wine stain area and severity index (FSASI) scoring system was proposed. To determine the FSASI score, the face was divided into four regions: forehead, right malar, left malar, and perioral. The severity of FPWS in each region was evaluated by three factors: percentage of the area affected, lesion color, and thickness. To evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of FSASI, two separate FSASI assessments on 111 clinical pictures were conducted by each rater in a one-week interval, and the results from 6 independent raters at different time points were compared. Validity of the FSASI scores was assessed by comparing it with physician global assessment (PGA) and traditional classification data. Validity of the area and color elements of FSASI was also determined. The changes in FSASI scores after vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy (V-PDT) were analyzed to evaluate the treatment effect.

RESULTS

The FSASI scoring system showed good intra- and inter-rater reliability (ICC >0.75, p < 0.001) and was found to be comparable to PGA scores (Spearman's r = 0.752-0.907, p < 0.001) and traditional classification data (Spearman's r = 0.426-0.662, p < 0.001). Efficacy analysis indicated that FSASI scores decreased after V-PDT treatment.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study demonstrated the reliability and validity of FSASI, which may be applied to assess the severity of FPWS and to evaluate treatment effects in clinical practice and research.

Evaluation of photodynamic effect of Indocyanine green (ICG) on the colon and glioblastoma cancer cell lines pretreated by cold atmospheric plasma

BACKGROUND

Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) has been proposed as a new approach based on its anticancer potential. However, its biological effects in combination with other physical modalities may also enhance efficiency and expand the applicability of the CAP method Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) may be improved by the use of indocyanine green (ICG) photosensitizer with absorption wavelength in the near infrared region to allow for deeper treatment depth.. In this study, the effectiveness of cold atmospheric helium plasma (He-CAP) as a pretreatment on the efficiency of ICG mediated PDT was investigated.

METHODS AND MATERIAL

First, toxicity of different concentrations of ICG on HT-29 and U-87MG cell lines was examined for 24 h. IC₁₀ and IC₃₀ of ICG were determined and then cells were treated with this ICG concentrations with different plasma radiation doses and light exposures for 48 h. Finally, MTT assay was performed for all treatment groups. The experiments were repeated at least 4 times at each group for two cell lines, separately. In order to compare the results, several indicators such as treatment efficiency, synergistic ratio, and the amount of optical exposure required for 50% cell death (ED₅₀) were also defined. Finally, SPSS 20 software is used for statistical analysis of data.

RESULTS

Pretreatment with CAP could significantly reduce cell survival in both cell lines (P<0.05). Also concentrations, irradiation time with CAP, and appropriate light exposure in both cell lines increased therapeutic efficiency compared to either treatment alone (P<0.05). While increasing the efficiency of photodynamic therapy varied between the two cell lines, the improvement in the PDT process was demonstrated by pretreatment with CAP.

CONCLUSION

Synergistic effect in the cell death with PDT were observed following He-CAP treatment and the results indicated that pretreatment with He-CAP improves the efficiency of photodynamic therapy.

Verspätete Aufklärung vor Lasertherapie eines Naevus flammeus

Ein Naevus flammeus im Bereich der rechten Wange einer Patientin wurde von einem Dermatologen mit einem Diodenlaser behandelt. In der Folge kam es zu einer Wundheilungsstörung und einer hypertrophen Narbe, die in einer Klinik für plastische Chirurgie mittels Vollhauttransplantation korrigiert wurde. Es verblieben dokumentierte Narbenzustände sowie ein beginnendes Ektropium.

Während ein von der Schlichtungsstelle beauftragter Gutachter keinen Behandlungsfehler feststellen konnte, kam die Schlichtungsstelle aufgrund rechtlicher Überlegungen zu dem Schluss, dass der Hautarzt gleichwohl der Patientin gegenüber für die eingetretenen Körperschäden haftbar sei, da keine rechtswirksame Einwilligung für die Laserbehandlung vorgelegen habe. Diese setze eine entsprechende Aufklärung voraus. Die Aufklärung der Patientin erfolgte jedoch am gleichen Tag, an dem ebenfalls die Behandlung durch den Hautarzt stattfand. Eine Aufklärung dürfe auch bei kleineren Eingriffen nicht erst so kurzfristig erfolgen, dass der Patient schon während der Aufklärung mit der anschließenden Durchführung des Eingriffs rechnen muss und deshalb unter Druck steht, sich nicht mehr aus dem bereits in Gang gesetzten Geschehensablauf lösen zu können.

Gerade bei dermatologischen Eingriffen im Grenzbereich zwischen medizinischer Notwendigkeit und kosmetischer Indikation kommt einer umfassenden Aufklärung auch über seltene Risiken einer Behandlung als Voraussetzung für eine rechtswirksame Einwilligung in die Durchführung der Behandlung große Bedeutung zu. Diese sollte grundsätzlich mündlich und schriftlich sowie rechtzeitig vor der Behandlung stattfinden, um dem Patienten Bedenkzeit zu geben und die Voraussetzung für eine informierte Einwilligung zu schaffen. Von einer Aufklärung erst kurz vor Durchführung der Laserbehandlung am gleichen Tag ist abzuraten. Nach der umfassenden mündlichen Aufklärung und Beantwortung allfälliger Fragen des Patienten sollten der Umfang der Aufklärung und die Einwilligung schriftlich dokumentiert werden.

Clinical outcome measures and scoring systems used in prospective studies of port wine stains: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Valid and reliable outcome measures are needed to determine and compare treatment results of port wine stain (PWS) studies. Besides, uniformity in outcome measures is crucial to enable inter-study comparisons and meta-analyses. This study aimed to assess the heterogeneity in reported PWS outcome measures by mapping the (clinical) outcome measures currently used in prospective PWS studies.

METHODS

OVID MEDLINE, OVID Embase, and CENTRAL were searched for prospective PWS studies published from 2005 to May 2020. Interventional studies with a clinical efficacy assessment were included. Two reviewers independently evaluated methodological quality using a modified Downs and Black checklist.

RESULTS

In total, 85 studies comprising 3,310 patients were included in which 94 clinician/observer-reported clinical efficacy assessments had been performed using 46 different scoring systems. Eighty-one- studies employed a global assessment of PWS appearance/improvement, of which -82% was expressed as percentage improvement and categorized in 26 different scoring systems. A wide variety of other global and multi-item scoring systems was identified. As a result of outcome heterogeneity and insufficient data reporting, only 44% of studies could be directly compared. A minority of studies included patient-reported or objective outcomes. Thirteen studies of good quality were found.

CONCLUSION

Clinical PWS outcomes are highly heterogeneous, which hampers study comparisons and meta-analyses. Consensus-based development of a core outcome-set would benefit future research and clinical practice, especially considering the lack of high-quality trials.

In-vitro investigation of cold atmospheric plasma induced photodynamic effect by Indocyanine green and Protoporphyrin IX

BACKGROUND

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the non-invasive methods for the treatment of superficial malignant cancers. One of the limiting challenges of PDT is the hypoxic conditions during treatment that reduces PDT Efficiency. Because of ROS and free radicals in plasma flame output, Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) may improve treatment efficiency. In this study, the effect of plasma-induced photodynamic effect of two Photosensitizers (PSs) include Indocyanine green (ICG) and Protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) on two cell lines (MCF-7 and HT-29) was investigated.

METHODS

First, toxicity of different concentrations of PSs (5-50 μM) were examined on cell lines. After that, we surveyed low toxicity of PSs concentrations with different plasma radiation doses. To quantitative of cell survival, MTT assay was performed after 48 h. Finally, in order to statistical analysis of data, we used SPSS software (version 20) and also in order to better comparison the results, we used indexes such as Plasma sensitivity index and Synergism index.

RESULTS

The results indicate that in most irradiant conditions; for ICG + CAP group, PSI > 1 and SI < 1 in the both of cell line (P < 0.05). Also for PPIX + CAP group in most irradiant conditions, only in the HT-29 cell line can it be said with certainty that both indexes (PSI and SI) are higher than 1 (P < 0-05).

CONCLUSION

The results show that the plasma-induced photodynamic therapy with ICG and PPIX has more effective results on MCF-7 (breast cancer) and HT-29 (colon cancer) cell line, respectively. Also, the synergistic effect was observed only for PPIX in the HT-29 cell line.

Biodistribution and toxicological evaluation of micron- and nano-sized erythrocyte-derived optical particles in healthy Swiss Webster mice

Particle-based systems provide a capability for the delivery of imaging and/or therapeutic payloads. We have engineered constructs derived from erythrocytes, and doped with the FDA-approved near infrared dye, indocyanine green (ICG). We refer to these optical particles as NIR erythrocyte-mimicking transducers (NETs). A particular feature of NETs is that their diameters can be tuned from micron- to nano-scale. Herein, we investigated the effects of micron- (≈2.6 μm diameter), and nano- (≈145 nm diameter) sized NETs on their biodistribution, and evaluated their acute toxicity in healthy Swiss Webster mice. Following tail vein injection of free ICG and NETs, animals were euthanized at various time points up to 48 hours. Fluorescence analysis of blood showed that nearly 11% of the injected amount of nano-sized NETs (nNETs) remained in blood at 48 hours post-injection as compared to ≈5% for micron-sized NETs (μNETs). Similarly, at this time point, higher levels of nNETs were present in various organs including the lungs, liver, and spleen. Histological analyses of various organs, extracted at 24 hours post-injection of NETs, did not show pathological alterations. Serum biochemistry profiles, in general, did not show elevated levels of the various analyzed biomarkers associated with liver and kidney functions. Values of various hematological profiles remained within the normal ranges following the administration of μNETs and nNETs. Results of this study suggest that erythrocyte-derived particles can potentially provide a non-toxic platform for delivery of ICG.

Innovative treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)

Indocyanine green (ICG) is not new in the field of liver surgery. Early studies performed in the 1980s and 1990s revealed the value of the ICG clearance test in predicting post-hepatectomy morbidity and mortality. ICG clearance and retention tests are crucial for determining precise liver function before liver surgery and offer several benefits for safe surgery. Whereas ICG is well-known and has long history in medicine, recent progress in infrared light technology over the last decade has highlighted another feature of ICG. For example, ICG fluorescence-guided surgery may change the next generation of liver surgery. In the near future, ICG with near-infrared (NIR) light photodynamic therapy (PDT) is expected to become a new treatment method for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Furthermore, several aspects of the mechanisms of ICG accumulation in HCC cells have been revealed by important basic research studies. New imaging technologies and mechanistic findings keep ICG in the spotlight. In this article, we review three recently described topics of ICG which may contribute to the development of innovative and new treatments method for HCC, fluorescence-guided surgery, mechanism of ICG accumulation in HCC cells, PDT for HCC.

Near-infrared photothermal/photodynamic therapy with indocyanine green induces apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells through oxidative stress

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a photothermal agent, photosensitizer, and fluorescence imaging probe which shows specific accumulation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. We recently developed a photodynamic therapy (PDT) using ICG and near-infrared (NIR) laser as a new anti-cancer treatment for HCC. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this effect needs to be elucidated. HuH-7 cells, a well-differentiated human HCC cell line, were transplanted subcutaneously into BALB/c-nu/nu mice for in vivo experiment. ICG was administered 24 h before NIR irradiation. The irradiation was performed at three tumor locations by 823-nm NIR laser on days 1 and 7. The temperature of HuH-7 xenografts increased to 48.5 °C 3 minutes after ICG-NIR irradiation start. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was detected after ICG-NIR irradiation both in vitro and in vivo. There was certain anti-tumor effect and ROS production even under cooling conditions. Repeated NIR irradiation increased the cell toxicity of ICG-NIR therapy; the mean tumor volume on day 9 was significantly smaller after ICG-NIR irradiation compared to tumor without irradiation (87 mm³ vs. 1332 mm³; p = 0.01) in HCC mice xenografts model. ICG-NIR therapy induced apoptosis in HCC cells via a photothermal effect and oxidative stress. Repeated ICG-NIR irradiation enhanced the anti-tumor effect.

Optical properties of biomimetic probes engineered from erythrocytes

Light-activated theranostic materials offer a potential platform for optical imaging and phototherapeutic applications. We have engineered constructs derived from erythrocytes, which can be doped with the FDA-approved near infrared (NIR) chromophore, indocyanine green (ICG). We refer to these constructs as NIR erythrocyte-mimicking transducers (NETs). Herein, we investigated the effects of changing the NETs mean diameter from micron- (≈4 μm) to nano- (≈90 nm) scale, and the ICG concentration utilized in the fabrication of NETs from 5 to 20 μM on the resulting absorption and scattering characteristics of the NETs. Our approach consisted of integrating sphere-based measurements of light transmittance and reflectance, and subsequent utilization of these measurements in an inverse adding-doubling algorithm to estimate the absorption (μ _a) and reduced scattering (μ _s') coefficients of these NETs. For a given NETs diameter, values of μ _a increased over the approximate spectral band of 630-860 nm with increasing ICG concentration. Micron-sized NETs produced the highest peak value of μ _a when using ICG concentrations of 10 and 20 μM, and showed increased values of μ _s' as compared to nano-sized NETs. Spectral profiles of μ _s' for these NETs showed a trend consistent with Mie scattering behavior for spherical objects. For all NETs investigated, changing the ICG concentration minimally affected the scattering characteristics. A Monte Carlo-based model of light distribution showed that the presence of these NETs enhanced the fluence levels within simulated blood vessels. These results provide important data towards determining the appropriate light dosimetry parameters for an intended light-based biomedical application of NETs.

Treatment of sporadic port-wine stains: a retrospective review of 17 cases consecutively treated by pulsed sequential dual wavelength 595 and 1064 nm laser

BACKGROUND

Port-wine stains (PWS) are relatively common and often cause cosmetic and psychological concerns. The pulsed dye laser is currently the treatment of choice for PWS.

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effectiveness of the pulsed sequential dual wavelength 595 and 1064 nm laser as first-line treatment for PWS and to identify prognostic factors for treatment outcome in a retrospective series of 17 consecutive previously untreated patients.

METHODS

The response to treatment was evaluated 2 months after treatment utilizing comparative photographs and a standard physician global assessment (PGA) grading system. Furthermore, measurement of the normalized erythema index (NEI) reduction (ΔNEI%) was carried out using an image analysis system. The subjective improvement was assessed using a patient's satisfaction questionnaire. Multiple linear regression models were finally used to identify factors associated with ΔNEI% and patients' satisfaction.

RESULTS

Seventeen patients, with PWS, including 12 children were included. The average PGA assessment was 2.5 ± 1.3 corresponding to an amelioration of 50% with a high intraclass correlation coefficient among the experts. The before-after NEI showed a statistically significant mean reduction of 3.5 ± 2.6 units, corresponding to a relative reduction of 31%. Questionnaires showed that the satisfaction was very good with an average score of 6.1 points on a scale ranging from -10 to 10 points. Multiple regression analysis revealed that location in the frontotemporal area was associated with a significant reduction in ΔNEI% (38.4%; 95% CI 4.3, 72.6). Presence of PWS on the neck was associated with a lower patient satisfaction (-3.7 points; 95% CI -6.5, -0.9). There were no significant side-effects, except for transient discomfort and purpura.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results obtained in the largest reported series so far, the pulsed sequential dual wavelength 595 and 1064 nm laser represents an effective and safe first-line therapeutic option for the treatment of PWS.

Guidelines of care for vascular lasers and intense pulse light sources from the European Society for Laser Dermatology

AIM

Lasers and non-coherent intense pulse light sources (IPLS) are based on the principle of selective photothermolysis and can be used for the treatment of many vascular skin lesions. A variety of lasers has been developed for the treatment of congenital and acquired vascular lesions which incorporate these concepts into their design. Although laser and light sources are very popular due to their non-invasive nature, caution should be considered by practitioners and patients to avoid permanent side-effects. The aim of these guidelines is to give evidence-based recommendations for the use of lasers and IPLS in the treatment of vascular lesions.

METHODS

These guidelines were produced by a Consensus Panel made up of experts in the field of vascular laser surgery under the auspices of the European Society of Laser Dermatology. Recommendations on the use of vascular lasers and IPLS were made based on the quality of evidence for efficacy, safety, tolerability, cosmetic outcome, patient satisfaction/preference and, where appropriate, on the experts' opinion. The recommendations of these guidelines are graded according to the American College of Chest Physicians Task Force recommendations on Grading Strength of Recommendations and Quality of Evidence in Clinical Guidelines.

RESULTS

Lasers and IPLS are very useful and sometimes the only available method to treat various vascular lesions. It is of a paramount importance that the type of laser or IPLS and their specific parameters are adapted to the indication but also that the treating physician is familiar with the device to be used. The crucial issue in treating vascular lesions is to recognize the immediate end-point after laser treatment. This is the single most important factor to ensure both the efficacy of the treatment and avoidance of serious side-effects.

[Potential and limitations of dye laser therapy for capillary malformations]

Capillary malformations (port-wine stains) are observed in less than 1 % of neonates and may occur coincidentally with other vascular and nonvascular malformations. Two thirds of lesions occur in the head and neck area and may have important cosmetic and psychological implications for the patients. Treatment with flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye lasers is still the therapy of choice for capillary malformations and can be applied to infants. If the laser device is used appropriately, the rate of persistent side effects is low. Although laser treatment achieves good clearance in the majority of patients with capillary malformations, complete clearance is rare. New therapeutic options are thus urgently required.

Erythrocyte-derived photo-theranostic agents: hybrid nano-vesicles containing indocyanine green for near infrared imaging and therapeutic applications

Development of theranostic nano-constructs may enable diagnosis and treatment of diseases at high spatial resolution. Some key requirements for clinical translation of such constructs are that they must be non-toxic, non-immunogenic, biodegradable, with extended circulating lifetime. Cell-based structures, particularly those derived from erythrocytes, are promising candidate carrier systems to satisfy these requirements. One particular type of theranostic materials utilize light-sensitive agents that once photo-activated can provide diagnostic imaging capability, and elicit therapeutic effects. Here we demonstrate the first successful engineering of hybrid nano-scale constructs derived from membranes of hemoglobin-depleted erythrocytes that encapsulate the near infrared chromophore, indocyanine green. We show the utility of the constructs as photo-theranostic agents in fluorescence imaging and photothermal destruction of human cells. These erythrocyte-mimicking nano-structures can be derived autologously, and may have broad applications in personal nanomedicine ranging from imaging and photo-destruction of cancerous tissues to vascular abnormalities, and longitudinal evaluations of therapeutic interventions.

Photodynamic therapy for human hepatoma-cell-line tumors utilizing biliary excretion properties of indocyanine green

BACKGROUND

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has not been reported for human hepatoma, because cancer cells only weakly take up the photosensitizer. Indocyanine green (ICG) is a photosensitizer normally excreted into the bile, and bile excretion is impaired in human hepatomas. We examined whether human hepatoma cell lines preferentially take up the ICG and then assessed the effectiveness of PDT using ICG and near-infrared (NIR) laser.

METHODS

HuH-7 and HepG2 human hepatoma cell lines were transplanted subcutaneously into mice. Developing HuH-7 and HepG2 tumors were confirmed that preferentially took up the ICG in 24 h after ICG was administered to mice via tail vein. The HuH-7 tumor showed a high tumor-to-background fluorescence intensity ratio, 255:1, whereas fluorescence intensity of HuH-7 is increased twofold compared to HepG2. HuH-7 cell transplanted mice were divided into three groups: ICG administration only (ICG+NIR-, n = 8), ICG and NIR laser exposure (ICG+NIR+, n = 12), and NIR laser exposure only (ICG-NIR+, n = 5).

RESULTS

Mean tumor volume in the ICG+NIR- and ICG-NIR+ groups increased steadily. In contrast, mean tumor volume in the ICG+NIR+ group did not change between days 0 and 3. Mean tumor volume did not differ significantly between the ICG-NIR+ and ICG-NIR- groups, but was significantly different between the ICG+NIR+ group and both the ICG-NIR+ and ICG+NIR- groups (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

ICG is preferentially taken up by HuH-7 and HepG2 human hepatoma cell line tumors. The tumor-to-background ratio of HuH-7 tumors, in particular, was extremely high. PDT with NIR laser irradiation suppressed HuH-7 human hepatoma cell line tumor growth.

Pulsed dye laser-resistant port-wine stains: mechanisms of resistance and implications for treatment

Port-wine stains (PWS) are among the most common congenital vascular malformations. Unlike capillary haemangiomas, these lesions do not involute spontaneously but rather become progressively more disfiguring as the patient ages. While benign in nature, the cosmetic deformity and attendant psychological and emotional distress prompt the majority of those afflicted to seek treatment. The pulsed dye laser (PDL) has long been considered the treatment of choice for these vascular lesions; however, very few patients achieve total clearance with PDL therapy and a significant number of lesions fail to respond at all. In order to address these recalcitrant cases, the mechanisms that contribute to treatment resistance must be understood and novel laser and light therapies must be employed. This review will address what is currently known about lesion-specific characteristics of PDL-resistant PWS as well as discuss current and future treatment options.

Based on the theory of stimulated emission of radiation that was proposed by Albert Einstein in 1916, the first lasers were developed in the 1960s. The first clinical use of laser technology in a German university took place in 1978 in the Department of Dermatology of the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich under the guidance of the former director, Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. mult. Otto Braun-Falco. In the following years, laser technology developed rapidly. Today laser technology is a widely used interdisciplinary therapeutic procedure that has deep clinical and scientific roots in dermatology. There are many conditions in both classic and aesthetic dermatology that are routinely - and sometimes exclusively - treated with lasers. Here we review recent developments in laser medicine. There seems to be a trend to combination procedures. To enhance efficacy, different laser systems are together or lasers are combined with specific topical medications.
