Abstract
Background This simulated study of 30 severely curved L-shaped root canals aimed to compare preparation time, aberrations, width measurements, and fractured files of three nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) files, namely, ProTaper, ProTaper Next (PTN), and WaveOne (WO). Methods Thirty simulated L-curved root canals of resin blocks were randomly divided into three groups. The canals were prepared to a tip size of 25 using ProTaper, PTN, and WO rotary file systems. Pre- and post-operative views for each sample were captured by a professional camera at a standardized distance and position. Blue India ink was injected into the pre-operative canals, and red India ink was injected into the post-operative canals to give a clear superimposition image. Five points were assessed through the halfway of the canal to the orifice (area between the beginning of curvature and apical end point). Preparation time, aberrations, width measurements, and fractured files were recorded and analyzed. Results Mean preparation time was longest in ProTaper (4.89±0.68 minutes). PTN and WO were the fastest in preparing the canals (about 3 minutes). A statistically significant difference was found between WO and ProTaper & PTN and ProTaper (p=0.000), while the difference was non-significant (p > 0.05) between WO and PTN. Nine aberrations consisting of three zips, one ledge and one outer widening were related to ProTaper, while WO recorded a ledge and fractured file, but for PTN system, it verified an outer widening and ledge. Only one WO file fractured, with no deformation observed in the other instruments. No significance was recorded among the width measurements in the different levels. Conclusion ProTaper next achieved faster cutting than the ProTaper and WO file systems. PTN maintained the best apical termination position and produced the least canal aberration, followed by WO and ProTaper.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study compared in vitro the anastomosis cleaning efficacy of different irrigant activation techniques at different levels; control group non-activation (NA), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) using Irrisafe, and EDDY sonic activation. METHODS Sixty anastomosis-containing mesial roots of mandibular molars were mounted in resin, sectioned at 2, 4, and 6 mm from the apex. Then reassembled and instrumented in a copper cube. For the irrigation technique roots were randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 20): group 1: NA, group 2: Irrisafe, group 3: EDDY. Stereomicroscopic images of anastomoses were taken after instrumentation and after irrigant activation. ImageJ program was used to calculate the percentage of anastomosis cleanliness. The percentage of cleanliness was calculated before and after final irrigation within each group and were then compared using paired t-tests. Intergroup and intragroup analyses were performed to compare between different activation techniques at the same root canal level (2, 4 and 6 mm) (intergroup) and to evaluate if each technique had different cleanliness efficacy according to the root canal level (intragroup) using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS All three irrigation techniques significantly improved anastomosis cleanliness (p < 0.001). Both activation techniques were significantly better than the control group at all levels. Intergroup comparison revealed that EDDY significantly achieved the best overall anastomosis cleanliness. The difference between EDDY and Irrisafe was significant in favor to EDDY at 2 mm and insignificant at 4 and 6 mm. The intragroup comparison showed that improvement in anastomosis cleanliness (i2-i1) in the needle irrigation without activation group (NA) was significantly higher in the apical 2 mm level compared to the 4 & 6 levels. While the difference in anastomosis cleanliness improvement (i2-i1) between levels in both Irrisafe and EDDY groups was insignificant. CONCLUSIONS Irrigant activation improves anastomosis cleanliness. EDDY was the most efficient in cleaning anastomoses located in the critical apical part of the root canal. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system followed by apical and coronal sealing is the key for healing or prevention of apical periodontitis. Remnants of debris and microorganisms retained within the anastomoses (isthmuses), or other root canal irregularities may lead to persistent apical periodontitis. Proper irrigation and activation are essential for cleaning root canal anastomoses.

Abstract
Background To investigate the efficacy of a nickel-titanium (NiTi) file with an automated computerized numerical control (CNC) system for root canal shaping.
Methods The movement of the automated device and the insertion angle were investigated. In Experiment 1, simulated resin root canals were randomly divided into four groups (n = 20): manual downward movement using a handpiece (Group 1), vertical downward movement by CNC (Group 2), reciprocating up and down movement by CNC (Group 3), and spiral up and down movement by CNC (Group 4). In Experiment 2, five different insertion angles of the NiTi file were evaluated (n = 20). Four parameters were used to evaluate the shaping ability: change in the working length, central axis offset, curvature variation, and preparation time. Groups were compared using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with significance was set at P < 0.05. Results The change in central axis position in the curved part of the root canal was found to be smaller in Group 4 than in other groups (P < 0.05). The curvature changes and preparation time of Groups 1 and 4 were significantly reduced compared with Groups 2 and 3 (P < 0.05). The variation in working length and curvature in the 5° insertion angle group was significantly smaller than in the other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusions A spiral up and down movement, controlled by the CNC machine, and 5° insertion angle, maintained original root canal shape more precisely than other methods.

Abstract
Context: Canal shaping abilities such as canal transportation, centering ability, and preparation time are important and have to be considered before using any Nickel–Titanium file system. Aim: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate and compare the amount of canal transportation, centering ability, and time required for the shaping of severely curved canals with WaveOne Gold (WOG) Primary Reciprocating file and One Curve (OC) Rotary file using the micro computed tomography (μCT). Materials and Methods: Thirty intact mesial roots of extracted human mandibular first molars having severe curvature (25°–35°) were selected. Samples were divided into two groups. Samples in Group I and II were shaped with WOG primary reciprocating files and OC rotary files, respectively, to the working length. Time required to prepare each canal was recorded. μCT pre- and post-instrumentation scans of all samples were taken. The cross-sectional images at 3, 6, and 9 mm from the radiographic apex were selected for analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal–Wallis and unpaired t-test. Results: At 3 mm, OC showed statistically lower canal transportation with mean value (0.17 ± 0.10) than WOG (0.55 ± 0.42). Furthermore, OC showed statistically significant better centering ability (0.59 ± 0.25) than WOG (0.39 ± 0.20) at 3 mm level. However, the differences between both instruments were not statistical significant at 6 and 9 mm level for canal transportation and centering ratio. WOG reciprocating file required less time for canal preparation than OC file. Conclusions: OC rotary file showed less canal transportation and better canal centring ability than WOG file, during the preparation of severely curved canals. However, WOG required less time for canal preparation.

Abstract
Objective: To compare cleaning effectiveness by histological analysis of a reciprocating single-file system with ProTaper rotary instruments during the preparation of curved root canals in extracted teeth. Methods: A total of 40 root canals with curvatures ranging between 20 - 40 degrees were divided into two groups of 20 canals. Canals were prepared to the following apical sizes: Reciproc size 25 (n=20); ProTaper: F2 (n=20). The normal distribution of data was tested by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the values obtained for the test (Mann-Whitney U test, P < .05) were statistically analyzed using the GraphPad InStat for the Mac OS software (GraphPad Software, La Jolla, CA, USA). Results: There were no significant differences in remaining debris (P > .05) between the two groups. Conclusion: The application of reciprocating motion during instrumentation did not result in increased debris when compared with continuous rotation motion, even in the apical part of curved canals. Both instruments resulted in debris in the canal lumen, irrespective of the movement kinematics applied.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to compare the shaping ability of two different nickel-titanium rotary files in the curved root canals of extracted human molar teeth. METHODS Thirty root canals of 17 extracted human molars teeth were randomly assigned to two experimental groups (n = 15): ProTaper Next and ProTaper Universal (PTU), on the basis of the rotary files system used. The final size of all apical foramina was 0.25 mm in diameter. Standardized digital radiographs were taken before and after instrumentation in both clinical and proximal views, with a size 10 K-file inserted into the canal for the determination of the angle of curvature and apical transportation. Preparation time and fractured or deformed instruments were also recorded. The unpaired Student's t-test was used to compare results. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the two instruments with respect to canal straightening and apical transportation before and after instrumentation (P > 0.05). The use of both instruments resulted in a significant reduction in the angle of curvature after instrumentation (P < 0.05). Instrumentation time was significantly greater for PTU (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The ProTaper Universal and ProTaper Next systems performed similarly with regard to the straightening of curved root canals and apical transportation. ProTaper Next was significantly faster than ProTaper Universal.

Abstract
Over the years, NiTi alloys have become indispensable materials in endodontic treatment. With technological advancements in metallurgy, manufacturers have attempted to produce instruments with enhanced features. In parallel with these developments, endodontic motors have undergone improvements in terms of torque control and kinematics that are adjustable in different directions. This review presents an overview of the advancements in instrumentation kinematics and the effect of instrumentation kinematics on root canal shaping procedures and instrument performance. The literature search for this narrative review was conducted in Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science using the keywords 'kinematics and endodontics' and 'reciprocation and endodontics'. In addition, historical literature was searched using the keyword 'nickel-titanium and endodontics'. Overall, 143 articles were included up to 2015.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The creation of glide path reduces the risk of instrument breakage. Glide path is created before using NiTi rotary instrumentation Aim: This study compared the changes in the root canal anatomy after creation of glide path using Path Files (PF) and V Glide Path 2 (VGP2) using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Hundred extracted mandibular first molars with curved mesial roots, curvature angles ranging within 20-30 degrees were assigned into two groups (n = 50 each). Glide path was prepared using PF (Group I) and VGP2 (Group II). CBCT images were obtained before and after instrumentation. The technical outcomes were compared at 0, 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7mm intervals. The data was analyzed using t-test and Chi-square test. RESULT There was a statistical difference between the root canal curvatures and working time between the two groups (p < 0.05). Canals transported towards the distal side in Group II but there was a slight mesial transportation in Group I at 0mm. Group I exhibited a better centric ability except at 1mm interval (p > 0.05). The changes in the volume were statistically significant only at 2mm interval (p < 0.05). The difference in the cross sectional area was not statistically significant at any interval (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Within the limits of this study the rotary Nickel Titanium Path Files appeared to be suitable instruments for safe and easy creation of glide path.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: Instrumentos rotatórios em níquel-titânio (NiTi) reduzem erros processuais e o tempo requerido para a preparação do canal radicular. OBJETIVO: Comparar dois sistemas de instrumentação rotatória NiTi - Pathfile + ProTaper Universal e Twisted Files - quanto à capacidade de preservação da morfologia do canal e quanto ao tempo de trabalho necessário para a preparação de canais curvos. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Os canais mesiais de 32 molares inferiores humanos (com ângulos de curvatura entre 20 e 40 graus) foram selecionados para o estudo. As amostras foram divididas aleatoriamente em dois grupos de 16 canais. Os preparos foram realizados por um Endodontista, utilizando-se a combinação dos instrumentos rotatórios Pathfile e ProTaper Universal (grupo PT) e os instrumentos rotatórios Twisted Files (grupo TF). Três Endodontistas analisaram imagens com a técnica da dupla radiografia digital, pré e pós-instrumentação, para avaliar se ocorreu transporte apical e/ou aberrações na morfologia dos canais. Por meio de uma análise computadorizada e com o auxílio de magnificação, as imagens inicial e final do canal radicular foram comparadas por meio de sua sobreposição. O teste de odds ratio foi utilizado para a comparação dos níveis de preservação da morfologia do canal, e ANOVA, complementada pelo teste de Tukey, foi utilizada para a comparação dos tempos de preparo. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. RESULTADO: Ocorreram desvios na trajetória do canal em ambos os grupos, mas a diferença entre estes não foi significativa. O tempo de trabalho requerido pela combinação dos sistemas Pathfile + ProTaper Universal foi significativamente maior do que o requerido pelo sistema Twisted Files. CONCLUSÃO: Os dois sistemas apresentaram performances semelhantes em relação à preservação da trajetória do canal; no entanto, o tempo de trabalho requerido pelo sistema Twisted Files foi menor.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Disinfection and subsequent obturation of the root canal space require adequate mechanical enlargement of the canals. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the shaping ability of Mtwo, RaCe and Medin rotary instruments during the preparation of curved root canals. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty mesiobuccal root canals of mandibular molars with severe curvatures between 25-35(°) and radius of 4-9 mm were randomly divided into three groups of 20 canals each. Using pre- and post-instrumentation radiographs, straightening of the canal and the apical transportation were determined with AutoCAD software. The data were analyzed using Chi square, analysis of variance, and post-hoc tests and the significance level was set at P<0.05. RESULTS Mtwo instruments maintained the canal curvature significantly better than Race and Medin instruments (P<0.05). There was significant difference between the rotary instruments for iatrogenic transportation of the major foramen (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Under the conditions of this in vitro study, Mtwo instruments seemed superior to the two other rotary instruments.

Abstract
AIM Cleaning and shaping is one of the most important phases in root canal therapy. Various rotary NiTi systems minimize accidents and facilitate the shaping process. Todays NiTi files are used with air-driven and electric handpieces. This study compared the canal centering after instrumentation using the ProTaper system using Endo IT, electric torque-control motor, and NSK air-driven handpiece. MATERIALS AND METHODS This ex vivo randomized controlled trial study involved 26 mesial mandibular root canals with 10 to 35° curvature. The roots were randomly divided into 2 groups of 13 canals each. The roots were mounted in an endodontic cube with acrylic resin, sectioned horizontally at 2, 6 and 10 mm from the apex and then reassembled. The canals were instrumented according to the manufacturer's instructions using ProTaper rotary files and electric torque-control motors (group 1) or air-driven handpieces (group 2). Photographs of the cross-sections included shots before and after instrumentation, and image analysis was performed using Photoshop software. The centering ability and canal transportation was also evaluated. Repeated measurement and independent t-test provided statistical analysis of canal transportation. RESULTS The comparison of the rate of transportation toward internal or external walls between the two groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.62). Comparison of the rate of transportation of sections within one group was not significant (p = 0.28). CONCLUSION Use of rotary NiTi file with either electric torquecontrol motor or air-driven handpiece had no effect on canal centering. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE NiTi rotary instruments can be used with air-driven motors without any considerable changes in root canal anatomy, however it needs the clinician to be expert.
