Abstract
Context Bioceramic sealers have improved sealing ability by forming an interfacial apatite layer that chemically bonds the sealer and radicular dentin thus decrease apical leakage. Aim This study aims to evaluate and compare the apical leakage of Cerafill RCS bioceramic sealer and gutta percha when used with three different obturating techniques. Materials and Methods Thirty-four extracted single-rooted premolars were decoronated and prepared up to size F3. Then, the specimens were randomly divided into 3 experimental groups (n = 10) cold lateral obturation technique, warm vertical obturation technique, single-cone obturation technique, positive and negative control groups (n = 2), according to the obturation technique used along with a bioceramic sealer. To evaluate apical leakage, all specimens were mounted in a glucose leakage model and assessed at 7 and 14 days using an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. Statistical Analysis The results were subjected to ANOVA/Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA; followed by post hoc analysis using Bonferroni correction. Results Significant differences were found in the cumulative leakage of all the three experimental groups. Significantly higher leakage was found in groups obturated using single-cone obturation technique as compared to warm vertical compaction technique at both 7 and 14 days. Conclusions Warm vertical compaction showed a better sealing result than single-cone obturation techniques at all observation periods.

Abstract
Introduction The ability of the temporary filling to seal endodontic access cavities may be crucial for the success of endodontic treatment. Numerous in vitro studies have investigated the sealability of the temporary fillings used in endodontic treatments. However, in vitro sealability studies have been criticized for their inconsistent results and questionable clinical relevance. Some journals have imposed moratoriums on publishing such studies to encourage researchers to test their validity and clinical relevance. Since the implementation of this moratorium, little progress has been made in this field. To further encourage researchers to investigate the reliability of these studies, this review presents an overview of the methodologies of studies that examine the ability of temporary filling materials to seal the endodontic access cavity in vitro and discusses the criticisms of these studies in detail. Materials and Methods PubMed, Scopus, and Embase electronic databases were searched to identify studies that tested in vitro the ability of temporary filling materials to seal endodontic access cavities. Only original articles published in English between 01/01/1970 and 28/02/2022 were included. Results The search yielded 551 results. After removing duplicates and excluding studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria, 94 studies were included in this review. Conclusion Although clinical studies may be the best way to test the performance of temporary fillings, the ethical importance of conducting preliminary in vitro studies is undeniable. It seems that questioning the reliability of in vitro sealability studies is not based on sufficient scientific evidence and that the inconsistencies in the results of these studies may be due to differences in the methodological and clinically relevant variables between them, rather than due to their unreliability.

Abstract
A tight temporary seal applied to an access cavity is thought to improve endodontic outcomes. This study aims to assess the bacterial and glucose microleakage of different types and combinations of temporary restorations. Human-extracted incisors were instrumented, dressed with a calcium hydroxide paste, and sealed with Cavit W (CW), CW/Ketac Molar (CW/KM), CW/Smart Dentin Replacement (CW/SDR), Intermediate restorative material/KM (IRM/KM), or Clip F (CF). Standardized 3D-printed hollow test specimens were manufactured and temporized in the same manner. The specimens were examined for bacterial and glucose leakage for 28 days. Data were analyzed using a Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. CW/SDR and CF showed the least bacterial and glucose leakage over time. CW, CW/KM, and IRM/KM had similarly high levels of glucose leakage, but CW/KM and IRM/KM provided a tighter seal against bacterial penetration than CW. CW/SDR and CF should be considered for the sealing of access cavities of teeth previously restored with methacrylate-based materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the sealing ability of combined application of iRoot BP Plus Root Repair Material (BP-RRM) and iRoot SP Injectable Root Canal Sealer (SP-RCS) for root-end filling. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 120 extracted human teeth were used in this study and were randomly divided into four groups. The BP-RRM+SP-RCS group included teeth retro-filled with combined use of BP-RRM and SP-RCS (n=45), and the BP-RRM group included teeth retro-filled by BP-RRM alone (n=45). Teeth without root-end preparation and filling were equally divided into positive control (n=15) and negative control (n=15). The apical sealing ability was evaluated by micro-CT analysis, dye penetrant examination, bacterial leakage test, and glucose leakage test. RESULTS Micro-CT analysis showed that the total void fraction of BP-RRM+SP-RCS group was significantly lower than that of BP-RRM group, particularly at the coronal 1/3 segment of the retro-filled roots. Consistently, the maximum linear depth of dye leakage in BP-RRM+SP-RCS group was less than that of BP-RRM group. Bacterial leakage test showed that the microbial leakage in BP-RRM+SP-RCS group was significantly less than that in BP-RRM group. However, no significant difference in glucose leakage between BP-RRM+SP-RCS group and BP-RRM group was observed. CONCLUSION Combined use of BP-RRM and SP-RCS for root-end filling promotes apical sealing in vitro. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Combined use of BP-RRM and SP-RCS for root-end filling exhibited better apical sealing as compared to BP-RRM alone in vitro, and this may help reducing technical sensitivity and promoting clinical efficiency during endodontic microsurgery.

Abstract
Canal filling materials and techniques have been one of the most studied topics in Endodontics. A simple search using the mesh term "root canal filling" in PubMed revealed more than 11,000 articles, an impressive number that is much higher than "root canal disinfection" (5,544 articles) or even the popular "root canal preparation" (8,527 articles). The overriding importance attributed to root filling procedures is not merely intuitive. It derived from the appealing relevance given by the appearance of the white lines in common radiographs grounded on retrospective clinical data that had identified the quality of a root filling as one of the major causes of treatment failure (lack of healing). Since the publication of the Washington study, impressive efforts have been made for the release of new materials and techniques, as well as, for the development of a plethora of laboratory methods to assess the quality of root filling procedures. This narrative review aims to address and discuss the most relevant laboratory methods to assess the root canal filling. Since filling quality improvements have not translated into higher success rates, as reported in longitudinal clinical studies, more than to deliver a simple methodology-based review, this paper aims to present an in-depth critical view on the assessment of laboratory methods used to study the filling materials and techniques. Recent data indicate that the long-term dimensional stability/degradation over time of endodontic sealers plays a central role in the treatment outcome. In this context, laboratory methods should be developed focusing on predicting, at least to some degree, the long-term clinical behaviour of root canal fillings, rather than simply ranking different materials or techniques.

Abstract
This paper is a literature review with additional virtual analyses of the authors’ own experimental research results. Knowledge from various areas was synergistically combined, appropriately for concurrent engineering, presenting several possible methodological approaches used in research, optimizing the selection of engineering materials and the conditions of their application with particular application in endodontics. Particular attention was paid to the theoretical aspects of filling material strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats SWOT analysis. Attention was paid to the original concepts of Sustainable Dentistry Development in conjunction with Dentistry 4.0, which includes endodontics as an important element. The dentists’ actions, among others, in conservative dentistry, along with endodontics, requires close cooperation with engineers and the enginering sciences. Methods of root canal preparation were described, together with selected tools, including those made of nitinol. Principles concerning the process of cleaning and shaping the pulp complex are presented. The importance of obturation methods, including the Thermo-Hydraulic-Condensation THC technique, and the selection of filling materials with the necessary sealants for the success of endodontic treatment are discussed. The experimental studies were carried out in vitro on human teeth removed for medical reasons, except for caries, for which two groups of 16 teeth were separated. After the root canal was prepared, it was filled with studs and pellets of a filling material based on polyester materials, which has gained the common trade name of resilon or, less frequently, RealSeal (SybronEndo) with an epiphany sealant. The teeth for the first group were obturated by cold lateral condensation. In the second case the obturation was performed using the Thermo-Hydraulic-Condensation technique using System B and Obtura III. The experimental leakage testing was done using a scanning electron microscope SEM and a light stereoscopic microscope LSM, as typical research tools used in materialography. The research results, in a confrontation with the data taken from the literature studies, do not indicate the domination of resilon in endodontics.

Is Gutta-Percha Still the “Gold Standard” among Filling Materials in Endodontic Treatment? Processes (Basel) 2021. Abstract
The paper is an extensive monographic review of the literature, and also uses the results of the authors’ own experimental research illustrating the noticed developmental tendencies of the filling material based on gutta-percha. The whole body of literature proves the correctness of the research thesis that this material is the best currently that can be used in endodontics. Caries is one of the most common global infectious diseases. Since the dawn of humankind, the consequence of the disease has been the loss of dentition over time through dental extractions. Both tooth caries and tooth loss cause numerous complications and systemic diseases, which have a serious impact on insurance systems and on the well-being, quality, and length of human life. Endodontic treatment, which has been developing since 1836, is an alternative to tooth extraction. Based on an extensive literature review, the methodology of qualifying patients for endodontic treatment was analyzed. The importance of selecting filling material and techniques for the development and obturation of the root canal during endodontic treatment was described. Particular attention was paid to the materials science aspects and the sequence of phase transformations and precipitation processes, as well as the need to ensure the stoichiometric chemical composition of Ni–Ti alloys, and the vacuum metallurgical processes and material processing technologies for the effects of shape memory and superelasticity, which determine the suitability of tools made of this alloy for endodontic purposes. The phenomena accompanying the sterilization of such tools, limiting the relatively small number of times of their use, play an important role. The methods of root canal preparation and obturation methods through cold side condensation and thermoplastic methods, including the most modern of them, the thermo-hydraulic condensation (THC) technique, were analyzed. An important element of the research hypothesis was to prove the assumption that to optimize the technology of development and obturation of root canals, tests of filling effectiveness are identified by the density and size of the gaps between the root canal wall, and the filling methods used and devices appropriate for material research, using mainly microscopy such as light stereoscopic (LSM) and scanning electron (SEM). The most beneficial preparations were obtained by making a longitudinal breakthrough of 48 natural human teeth, extracted for medical reasons, different from caries, with compliance with all ethical principles in this field. The teeth were prepared using various methods and filled with multiple obturation techniques, using a virtual selection of experimental variants. The breakthroughs were made in liquid nitrogen after a one-sided incision with a narrow gap created by a diamond disc using a materialographic cutter. The best effectiveness of the root canal filling was ensured by the technology of preparing the root canals with K3 rotary nitinol tools and filling the teeth with the THC thermoplastic method using the System B and Obtura III devices with studs and pellets of filling material based on gutta-percha after covering the root canal walls with a thin layer of AH Plus sealant. In this way, the research thesis was confirmed.

Abstract
The importance of endodontics is presented within our own concept of Dentistry Sustainable Development (DSD) consisting of three inseparable elements; i.e., Advanced Interventionist Dentistry 4.0 (AID 4.0), Global Dental Prevention (GDP), and the Dentistry Safety System (DSS) as a polemic, with the hypothesis of the need to abandon interventionist dentistry in favour of the domination of dental prevention. In view of the numerous systemic complications of caries that affect 3−5 billion people globally, endodontic treatment effectively counteracts them. Regardless of this, the prevention of oral diseases should be developed very widely, and in many countries dental care should reach the poorest sections of society. The materials and methods of clinical management in endodontic procedures are characterized. The progress in the field of filling materials and techniques for the development and obturation of root canals is presented. The endodontics market is forecast to reach USD 2.1 billion in 2026, with a CAGR of 4.1%. The most widely used and recognized material for filling root canals is gutta-percha, recognized as the “gold standard”. An alternative is a synthetic thermoplastic filler material based on polyester materials, known mainly under the trade name Resilon. There are still sceptical opinions about the need to replace gutta-percha with this synthetic material, and many dentists still believe that this material cannot compete with gutta-percha. The results of studies carried out so far do not allow for the formulation of a substantively and ethically unambiguous view that gutta-percha should be replaced with another material. There is still insufficient clinical evidence to formulate firm opinions in this regard. In essence, materials and technologies used in endodontics do not differ from other groups of materials, which justifies using material engineering methodology for their research. Therefore, a detailed methodological approach is presented to objectify the assessment of endodontic treatment. Theoretical analysis was carried out using the methods of procedural benchmarking and comparative analysis with the use of contextual matrices to virtually optimize the selection of materials, techniques for the development and obturation of root canals, and methods for assessing the effectiveness of filling, which methods are usually used, e.g., in management science, and especially in foresight research as part of knowledge management. The results of these analyses are presented in the form of appropriate context matrices. The full usefulness of the research on the effectiveness and tightness of root canal filling using scanning electron microscopy is indicated. The analysis results are a practical application of the so-called “digital twins” approach concerning the virtual comparative analysis of biomaterials used in endodontic treatment.

Abstract
Bonding of resin composite fillings, for example following root-canal treatment, is a challenge because remaining gaps grow and lead to failure. Here, phase-contrast-enhanced micro-computed tomography (PCE-CT) is used to explore methods of non-destructive quantification of the problem, so that countermeasures can be devised. Five human central incisors with damaged crowns were root-filled followed by restoration with a dental post. Thereafter, the crowns were rebuilt with a resin composite that was bonded conventionally to the tooth with a dental adhesive system (Futurabond U). Each sample was imaged by PCE-CT in a synchrotron facility (ID19, European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) with a pixel size of 650 nm. The reconstructed datasets from each sample were segmented and analysed in a semi-automated manner using ImageJ. PCE-CT at sub-micrometre resolution provided images with an impressive increased contrast and detail when compared with laboratory micro-computed tomography. The interface between the dental adhesive and the tooth was often strongly disrupted by the presence of large debonded gaps (on average 34% ± 15% on all surfaces). The thickness of the gaps spanned 2 µm to 16 µm. There was a large variability in the distribution of gaps within the bonding area in each sample, with some regions around the canal exhibiting up to 100% discontinuity. Although only several micrometres thick, the extensive wide gaps may serve as gateways to biofilm leakage, leading to failure of the restorations. They can also act as stress-raising `cracks' that are likely to expand over time in response to cyclic mechanical loading as a consequence of mastication. The observations here show how PCE-CT can be used as a non-destructive quantitative tool for understanding and improving the performance of clinically used bonded dental restorations.

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study was to compare the sealing ability of various calcium silicate-based root-filling materials with a glucose leakage model after orthograde obturation using an open apex model. Materials and Methods Thirty-two recently extracted human maxillary anterior teeth with single, straight root canals were selected and divided into four groups: Group 1 (G1), White Mineral Trioxide Aggregate; the material was delivered into the canal using the MAP system and further compacted with a specific plugger. Group 2 (G2), TotalFill bioceramic Root Repair material: the material was injected directly into the middle half of the root canal. Group 3 (G3), BioDentine; the material was delivered into the canal using the Hawe composite gun and prefitted pluggers. Statistical Analysis Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 23.0 statistical software package. The Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test was applied to compare the differences in glucose microleakage. Results There were no significant differences among the three experimental groups. The results showed a tendency for leakage to increase from the 1st day to the end of experimental period. Conclusions Within the parameters of this in vitro study, it may be concluded that the three materials evaluated present similar apical microleakage when treating teeth with open apices requiring orthograde delivery of an apical barrier.

Abstract
Background It is unknown whether the bioactivity of Biodentine characterized by the precipitation of hydroxyapatite and formation of tags into the dentinal tubules improve its sealing ability as an apical plug. Aim: To evaluate the sealing ability provided by Biodentine and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) apical plugs, with or without phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) intracanal dressing, using a glucose leakage method. Material and Methods The space of the canal of 100 root segments with about 12 mm long was shaped using Gates-Glidden. After created an apical retrograde cavity, the root segments were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 25): G1 - Biodentine; G2 - Biodentine + PBS intracanal dressing; G3 - MTA and G4 - MTA + PBS intracanal dressing. All access openings were filled with temporary cement and all root segments were introduced in floral foams moistened with PBS. After 2 months, all root segments were prepared to evaluate the glucose leakage. The amount of glucose leakage was quantified by a spectrophotometer and the data were analyzed using chi-square test (p<0.05). Results Traces of the glucose were observed in a higher of samples that received Biodentine apical plug (p<0.05). The exposure to intracanal PBS did not influence the sealing provided by Biodentine and MTA. Conclusions The Biodentine had lower sealing ability than MTA. The interaction with PBS intracanal dressing did not improve the sealing ability provided by sealers. Key words:Apexification, dental cements, dental leakage, glucose, pressure.

Abstract
Introduction: Propylene glycol (PG) improves the handling, physical, and chemical properties of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of PG on the sealing ability of MTA and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) apical barriers. Methods and Materials: A total of 70 extracted human maxillary single-rooted teeth were prepared using ProTaper rotary system. The apical 3 mm of the root tips were resected and the root canals were enlarged with Peeso reamers up to #4, to create open apex teeth. The teeth were then randomly divided into four experimental (n=15) and two control (n=5) groups. Group1: MTA+ MTA liquid, group2; MTA+MTA liquid (80%) + PG (20%), group3; CEM+CEM liquid, group4; CEM+ liquid (80%) + PG (20%). Cements were mixed with their respective mixing agents and a 4-mm thick apical plug was fabricated. The microleakage was measured on day 1, 3, 7 and 21 using a fluid filtration technique. The repeated measures ANOVA and Sidak test were used to analyze the data. Results: All experimental groups demonstrated various amounts of microleakage. No significant difference was found between MTA and CEM cement (P=0.193), regardless of time and liquid components. There was no significant difference was observed between liquids (P=0.312) in all time intervals. The rate of microleakage decreased over time and a significant differences was observed between all intervals (P<0.05), except 3-7 and 7-21 (P=0.190) days. Conclusion: PG demonstrated neither a positive nor a negative effect on the sealing ability of Angelus MTA and CEM cement.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of three different canal filling techniques. Sixty-four roots of extracted human maxillary anterior teeth were prepared using ProTaper® rotary instruments. The specimens were then randomly divided into 3 experimental groups (n = 16) and 2 control groups (n = 8). The root canals were filled using cold lateral compaction (CLC group), continuous wave condensation technique using the Elements Obturation Unit® (EOU group), and ProTaper obturators (PT group). For the negative control group, 8 roots were filled using lateral compaction as in the CLC group, and the teeth were covered twice with a layer of nail varnish (NCG group). Another 8 roots were filled using lateral compaction, but without sealer, and these were used as the positive control (PCG group). A glucose leakage model was used for quantitative evaluation of microleakage for 24 hours and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 weeks. No significant difference in the cumulative amount of leakage was found between the three experimental groups at all observation times. The lateral condensation of cold gutta-percha can guarantee a similar seal of canal fillings as can be achieved by using thermal methods, in the round canals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION It is very important to obtain a tight seal in obturated root canal, making it necessary to conduct clinical or laboratory studies on the sealability of endodontic materials. Different methodologies have been historically used to assess microleakage of different endodontic materials. The aim of the present study was to comprehensively review different material testing methods used in microleakage studies, their interpretation and importance in endodontic literature. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic search was conducted in Medline, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases. In addition, the reference lists of review articles on the topic were searched. No language restriction was applied. Two independent reviewers screened the article. RESULTS Microleakage is considered the single most important risk factor responsible for apical periodontitis. Dye penetration, dye diffusion, bacterial and endototoxin infiltration, fluid filtration, glucose, caffeine and protein infiltration, radioisotope penetration, animal studies, and electrochemical or 3D evaluation are different methodologies used to assess dental leakage. 91 out of 177 articles in the primary search were included in the study. These methods are very divergent in their viewpoints; that is why their results cannot be easily compared. It is necessary to standardize microleakage detection methods in order to more correctly evaluate the phenomena that are found between the root canal wall and the root canal filling materials. CONCLUSIONS All the methods are useful if studies are performed strictly with large sample sizes and proper control groups and if the technique can be standardized. Furthermore, more evaluations of the reliability of the methods are strongly recommended. Key words:Dental leakage, review, root canal, material testing methods, data interpretation.

Abstract
Introduction: Microleakage is of the causes of endodontic treatment failure. The aim of this in vitro study, was to compare the microleakage of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement apical plugs in three environments. Methods and Materials: A total of 130 human extracted single rooted teeth were collected. After decoronation, preparation of the root canal space and simulation of open apices, 5 teeth were selected as positive and negative control groups and the rest of the samples were randomly divided into two groups (MTA plug and CEM cement plug) and each group was divided into 3 subgroups (dry, contaminated with saliva and contaminated with blood). In each group apical plug was placed into the canal. After full setting of the apical plug, microleakage of the samples were evaluated using fluid filtration method and the data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance. Results: In dry and saliva contaminated environments, the leakage of MTA samples were 40.906±2.081 and 39.608±2.081, respectively which was significantly more than that of CEM cement samples (26.977±2.081 and 27.000±2.081, respectively). However, in blood-contaminated environments, the amount of leakage in MTA group (21.640±2.081) was significantly lower than CEM cement group (44.358±2.081). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, in dry and saliva-contaminated conditions CEM cement provides significantly better seal in comparison to MTA

Abstract
This study was designed to assess the ability to prevent glucose penetration of a bioceramic putty ready-to-use repair cement comparing to white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). After root canal instrumentation, the apical 3 mm of maxillary incisors were resected and root-end cavities with depth of 3 mm were prepared with ultrasound and filled with the tested materials (15 roots per group). All roots were mounted in a double chamber system to assess glucose penetration using 15 psi pressure application. After 1 h, glucose concentrations in the lower chamber were measured following an enzymatic reaction. Four roots were used as controls. The Mann-Whitney test verified differences in glucose leakage between groups and the Tukey's test was used for multiple comparisons. Significance level was set at 5%. There was no significant difference in glucose leakage between iRoot BP Plus and White MTA groups. iRoot BP Plus had a similar ability to that of white MTA in preventing glucose leakage as a root-end filling material.

Abstract
Resilon is a thermoplastic synthetic polymer-based endodontic material alternative to gutta-percha. It contains bioactive glass and also radiopaque fillers. It has the same handling properties as gutta-percha. For endodontic retreatment, it may be dissolved with some solvents, such as chloroform or softened with heat. The composition of Resilon and its sealer (Epiphany) bond to dentin and form a monoblock. A review of the literature and a discussion of its properties comparing to other root canal filling materials are presented.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study is to compare the corono-apical sealing ability of three single-cone obturation systems using a glucose leakage model. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 freshly extracted human maxillary single-rooted teeth was selected, and their crowns were cut. The root canal of each sample was instrumented using a rotary crown down technique and then divided into four experimental (n = 20 each) and two control groups (n = 5 each). Samples in the experimental groups were filled as follows: Group 1, cold lateral condensation using gutta-percha/AH Plus; group 2, single-cone C-points/smart-paste bio-sealer; group 3, single-cone bio-ceramic (BC) impregnated gutta-percha/endo-sequence BC sealer; group 4, single-cone Resilon/RealSeal SE after 7 days, the sealing ability of root canal fillings was tested at different time intervals using glucose leakage model. Glucose leakage values were measured using a spectrophotometer and statistically analyzed. Results: The four experimental groups presented significantly different glucose leakage values at all test periods (P < 0.05). At the end of the observation period, the cumulative glucose leakage values of groups 2 and 3 were significantly lower than those of groups 1 and 4 (P < 0.05). Conclusion: C-points/smart-paste Bio and BC impregnated gutta-percha/endo-sequence BC sealer combinations provided the superior sealing ability over the lateral condensation technique.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the effect of root canal preparation size and taper on the amounts of glucose penetration. MATERIAL AND METHODS For conducting this experimental study, eighty mandibular premolars with single straight canals were divided randomly into 2 experimental groups of 30 samples each and 2 control groups. Using K-files and the balance force technique, canals in group 1 were prepared apically to size 25 and coronally to size 2 Peesoreamer. Group 2 were instrumented apically and coronally to size 40 and size 6 Peesoreamer, respectively. Rotary instrumentation was accomplished in group 1; using size 25 and .04 tapered and in group 2, size 35 and .06 tapered Flex Master files. Canals were then obturated by lateral compaction of cold gutta-percha. Glucose penetration through root canal fillings was measured at 1, 8, 15, 22 and 30 days. Data were recorded as mmol/L and statistically analyzed with Mann-Whitney U test (P value=. 05). RESULTS In comparison to group 1, group 2 showed significant glucose leakage during the experimental period (P value < .0001). Also, in each experimental group, the amount of micro-leakage was significantly increased at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS Under the condition of this study, the amounts of micro-leakage through root canal fillings are directly related to the size and taper of root canal preparation and reducing the preparation size may lead to less micro-leakage. Abstract
New obturation biomaterials have been introduced over the past decade to improve the seal of the root canal system. However, it is not clear whether they have really produced a three-dimensional impervious seal that is important for reducing diseases associated with root canal treatment. A review of the literature was performed to identify models that have been employed for evaluating the seal of the root canal system. In vitro and in vivo models are not totally adept at quantifying the seal of root canals obturated with classic materials. Thus, one has to resort to clinical outcomes to examine whether there are real benefits associated with the use of recently introduced materials for obturating root canals. However, there is no simple answer because endodontic treatment outcomes are influenced by a host of other predictors that are more likely to take precedence over the influence of obturation materials. From the perspective of clinical performance, classic root filling materials have stood the test of time. Because many of the recently introduced materials are so new, there is not enough evidence yet to support their ability to improve clinical performance. This emphasizes the need to translate anecdotal information into clinically relevant research data on new biomaterials.

Samples in the experimental groups were filled as follows: Group 1, cold lateral condensation using Gutta-percha/AH Plus; Group 2, single-cone Gutta-percha and AH Plus; Group 3, single-cone Gutta-percha/and GuttaFlow2; Group 4, single-cone Resilon/RealSeal SE after 7 days, the sealing ability of root canal fillings was tested at different time intervals using glucose leakage model. Glucose leakage values were measured using a spectrophotometer and statistically analyzed. RESULTS The four experimental groups presented significantly different glucose leakage values at all test periods (P < 0.05). At the end of the observation period, the cumulative glucose leakage values of Groups 3 and 4 were significantly lower than those of Groups 1 and 2 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Gutta-percha/GuttaFlow2 or Resilon/RealSeal SE combinations provided the superior sealing ability over the lateral condensation technique.

Abstract
Background and aims. An ideal root canal filling material should completely seal the entire root canal space and block communication between the root canal system and its surrounding tissues; it should also be nontoxic, noncarcinogenic, non-genotoxic, biocompatible, insoluble in tissue fluids and dimensionally stable. Bonding to dentin is a promising property, which can prevent leakage and improve the sealing ability of root canal filling materials. Resilon was developed and rec-ommended initially because the existing rootcanal filling materials did not bond to root canal dentin. Since its introduction in 2004, numerous reports have been published regarding various aspects of this material. The aim of this literature review is to present investigations regarding Resilon's physical and chemical properties and leakage studies. Materials and methods. A review of the literature was performed by using electronic and hand searching methods for Resilon from May 2004 to April 2012. Results. There are many published reports regarding Resilon. The searchshowed that Resilon is composed of a parent polymer, polycaprolactone or Tone, which is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester, with filler particles consisting of bioactive glass, bismuth oxychloride and barium sulfate. It possesses some antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a promising material for root canal filling. Despite the presence of numerous case reports and case series regarding these applications, there are few designed research studies on clinical applications of this material. Resilon has some drawbacks such as high cost. Conclusion. Resilon seals well and is a biocompatible material. However, more clinical studies are needed to confirm its efficacy compared with other materials.

Abstract
Epiphany/Resilon and GuttaFlow are newly developed methods for obturation of the root canal system. Epiphany/Resilon is a thermoplastic, synthetic polymer-based root canal filling material which enables the bonding to the dentin root canal wall during root canal obturation. GuttaFlow is a cold flowable filling system for the obturation of root canals, combining sealer and gutta-percha in one product. The purpose of this study was to assess the leakage of the Epiphany/Resilon or GuttaFlow root canal filling compared with lateral condensation of gutta-percha. For this study were used 45 human extracted teeth, chemo mechanically prepared, divided into three groups and obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus, Epiphany/Resilon and GuttaFlow. For dye penetration all teeth were centrifuged for three minutes at 30 g in 2% methylene blue and dissolved in 65% nitric acid for 3 days. The extracted methylene blue was determined with Photometer. Root Canal fillings with Epiphany/Resilon showed less dye penetration than lateral condensation of gutta-percha and GuttaFlow. Epiphany/Resilon is ideally suited as a root canal filling material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of Resilon + Epiphany, EndoRez, Activ GP, and conventional AH Plus + gutta-percha technique using the glucose filtration model. STUDY DESIGN One hundred twenty maxillary incisors were divided into 5 experimental and 2 control groups. After root canal shaping, the experimental groups were filled with AH Plus + gutta-percha (lateral compaction), Resilon + Epiphany (lateral compaction), AH Plus + Protaper's proprietory cone, EndoRez + sealer, or Activ GP + sealer). The specimens were mounted on a glucose model and samples were taken for 3 weeks for leakage measurement. RESULTS No statistically significant difference was observed between the leakage of all groups at the 3 testing periods (P > .05). CONCLUSION The filling materials with the monoblock concept do not seem to be superior to the conventional AH Plus + gutta-percha system regarding microleakage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to compare the homogeneity and adaptation of endodontic fillings placed in root canals with wide apical preparation. STUDY DESIGN One hundred twenty root canals were prepared under simulated clinical conditions. The range of apical preparation size was 45 (narrow canals) to 60 (wide canals). The canals were filled using 4 techniques: Thermafil, GuttaFlow, apical cone, and vertical compaction. The root canals were sectioned at 5 levels. The adaptation and homogeneity of the filling were evaluated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS The percentage of canal outline in contact with the filling in the Thermafil group (91.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) 88.8%-93.6%]) was statistically significantly lower than in the other groups. No statistically significant differences were found between GuttaFlow (96.6% [95% CI 95.7%-97.5%]), apical cone (98.6% [95% CI 98.0%-99.3%]), and vertical compaction (98.1% [95% CI 96.5%-99.7%]). Similarly, the percentage of void area in Thermafil group (4.0% [95% CI 2.6%-5.3%]) was statistically significantly higher than in the other groups (GuttaFlow 1.4% [95% CI 0.1%-1.8%], apical cone 1.6% [95% CI 0.7%-2.4%], and vertical compaction 0.1% [95% CI 0.1%-1.8%]). CONCLUSIONS The tested filling techniques/materials provided similar high values for the homogeneity and adaptation to root canal walls after enlarged apical preparation, except for Thermafil at the most apical level.
