Abstract
Aims and Objectives This in vitro study aimed to compare the efficacy of three different irrigation methods in removing calcium hydroxide from curved root canals and to estimate the amount of residual medicament using microcomputed tomography. Materials and Methods Thirty extracted molars with curved mesial root canals, ranging from 25° to 30°, were prepared with ProTaper Next using X2 to full working length and were filled with calcium hydroxide. Teeth also were randomly divided into four groups: group 1 (n = 8)- Erbium: Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Er:YAG) laser; group 2 (n = 8)-EndoActivator; group 3 (n = 8)-EndoVac; and a control group (n = 6)-negative control with no calcium hydroxide. Microcomputed tomography was used to evaluate the residual amount of filling material. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26, with a significance level of 0.05. Descriptive statistics, student t test, and Chi-square test were applied for data analysis. Results The greatest amount of residual calcium hydroxide was observed in the samples with EndoVac irrigation (0.515 mm3), followed by EndoActivator (0.381 mm3) and Er:YAG laser (0.121 mm3). However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. The greatest residual amount was observed in the apical third (0.419 mm3), followed by the middle (0.050 mm3) and the coronal (0.015 mm3). Conclusions No statistically significant differences were observed in the efficacy of the tested techniques for removing calcium hydroxide from curved root canals, whereas a significant difference was observed in the distribution of residual material depending on the technique used. The removal of the calcium hydroxide was more effective in the coronal and middle third of the canal. The greatest residual material was found in the apical portion of the root canal.

Abstract
Aim: To compare the efficiency of sonic irrigation, passive ultrasonic irrigation, and conventional syringe irrigation (CI) in removing pure and injectable calcium hydroxide (CH) from the root canals of mandibular second premolars by measuring the probable microleakage of residual CH particles in root canal obturation using computerized liquid filtration (CLF).
Materials and Methods: Eighty instrumented mandibular second premolars were categorized into three experimental groups (n = 20 each) based on the irrigation method used for removing CH and a control group (n = 20) in which CH was not used. Each experimental group was divided into two equal groups (pure and injectable CH). After 1 week, CH was removed from the root canals, and the teeth were obturated. CLF measurements were performed 1 week after obturation. Nonparametric variables between two groups were compared using the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare more than two groups. The significance level was set at p < 0.05.
Results: All experimental groups showed higher leakage values than the control group. The highest leakage values were evident in the CI group, and the lowest leakage values were found in the sonic (EDDY) irrigation group. No significant differences were detected among the different forms of CH.
Conclusions: None of the analyzed techniques could completely remove CH from root canals, resulting in higher leakage values. Sonic irrigation with EDDY was the best in removing CH from root canals.

Abstract
Chemical composition of temporary cements interferes in the bond strength and quality of the bond interface of glass fiber posts to root dentin. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of different temporary cements on the bond strength of fiberglass posts and resin cement. Thirty-two maxillary central incisor roots were standardized at 15 mm length. The root canals were prepared with Reciproc R50 and filled with a R50 single cone and AH Plus. Ten mm of filling material was removed with a heated Schilder condenser, leaving 5 mm of apical filling material. The roots were randomly distributed into 4 groups (n = 8). In the control group, the root canal was prepared with a standard drill according to the post diameter (DC #1, FGM, Joinville, Brazil), irrigated with 5 mL of distilled water and immediately received the fiberglass post cemented with self-adhesive resin cement. For the other groups, cores were made with temporary intraradicular retainers cemented with different temporary cements: methacrylate-based resin (Bifix Temp - Voco), calcium hydroxide-based (Provicol - Voco) and zinc oxide-based - eugenol-free (Relyx Temp NE - 3M). After 7 days, mechanical removal of the temporary retainers, preparation, irrigation of the root canal and cementation of the fiberglass post were performed, following the same protocol that had been performed in the control group. The roots were sectioned to obtain 3 slices per root third. The most cervical section of each third was used for the push-out test and failure pattern analysis, while the most apical section was subjected to analysis of the adhesive interface by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The BS data were compared between groups using the two-way ANOVA and Tukey post-test. The failure pattern results were expressed in percentage and compared between groups using the chi-square test and the material adaptation data at the bond interface were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dwass-Steel-Critchlow-Fligner tests. The results showed higher BS in the cervical third, with a higher value in the control group (10.8 ± 0.94) and Bifix Temp group (9.78 ± 0.71), with no statistically significant difference between these groups (P > .05). The middle and apical thirds showed no statistically significant difference (P > .05). As regards the type of failure, a higher percentage of mixed adhesive failures was observed for all groups. Analysis of the adhesive interface by SEM showed that the temporary cement Bifix Temp showed greater adaptation at the bond interface. It was concluded that the methacrylate-based resin temporary cement showed the highest bond strength values and best adaptation to root dentin than the zinc oxide-based and calcium hydroxide-based temporary cements.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the penetration of endodontic cement following the removal of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) dressing using the XP-endo Finisher in association with different irrigating solutions. Sixty premolars were instrumented and applied with a Ca(OH)2 dressing. To remove Ca(OH)2, the teeth were divided into six groups, each with a different volume of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), as well as solution stirring time with XP-endo Finisher (0, 30, and 60 sec). Root canals were filled using the lateral condensation technique. Fluorescein dye was added to the cement for microscopic laser scanning analysis. In the generated images, linear measurements were taken in micrometers, and their averages were calculated. To analyze the perimeter penetration ratio of the cement, the total perimeter of the canal and the segment of the total perimeter of the canal where the endodontic cement penetrated into the dentinal tubules were measured in micrometers. We found that using an XP-endo Finisher in irrigation was more effective than using a needle and syringe during the extension and penetration of endodontic cement. Shaking with XP-endo Finisher with 17% EDTA increased the extent and perimeter of the penetration of the endodontic cement into the dentinal tubules. However, using the XP-endo Finisher with EDTA only was more efficient than using the instrument interchangeably in NaOCl and EDTA. Although XP-endo Finisher contributes to the removal of Ca(OH)2, none of the protocols or instruments used removed all Ca(OH)2 from the root system.

Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different irrigant-activation techniques for eliminating calcium hydroxide from an internal root canal resorption cavity by using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). Background: Several techniques and irrigants are inadequate for the complete removal of calcium hydroxide from an internal root resorption cavity. Recently, a few studies have investigated the effectiveness of various methods, but there has been no micro-CT study that compares the effectiveness of photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) and shock wave enhanced emission photoacoustic streaming (SWEEPS) techniques. Methods: Seventy single-canal mandibular premolar teeth were selected and divided into seven groups (n = 10) according to the techniques to be used: syringe irrigation (SI), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), EndoActivator (EA), XP-Endo finisher file (XP), Er,Cr:YSGG laser-activated irrigation, PIPS, and SWEEPS. The root canals were instrumented using a rotary system and divided vertically. Internal resorption cavities were created and standardized through diamond burs. Calcium hydroxide was placed into the root canal space. All specimens were evaluated using micro-CT in two different periods. The initial and residual calcium hydroxide volumes in the simulated cavities were calculated. Data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis H test. Results: SWEEPS and PIPS were significantly more effective than EA, Er,Cr:YSGG, PUI, XP, and SI (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the SWEEPS and PIPS groups (p > 0.05). SI and XP showed the least effective activity (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The SWEEPS and PIPS techniques were superior to the EA, Er,Cr:YSGG, PUI, XP, and SI techniques. None of the techniques used entirely removed the calcium hydroxide from the resorption cavities.

Abstract
Background Bovine and porcine teeth are often used in in vitro experiments as substitutes of human teeth. Objectives The aim of the present study was to perform a comparative analysis of enamel morphology of permanent human, bovine and porcine teeth under the scanning electron microscope. Methods As many as 10 human, 10 bovine, and 10 porcine teeth were studied. All the teeth were sectioned and the halves were randomly divided into 2 groups according to the examined tissue (vestibular enamel at the mid-height of the dental crown and in the cervical area). Human and bovine enamel was etched for 15 sec and porcine enamel for 30 sec. The scanning electron microscope analysis was performed. The length and width of enamel prisms were determined with the “Met-Ilo” 1.1 computer program. Results All enamel samples revealed the same etching pattern—Silverstone's type 2. Bovine enamel showed a similar porosity and the amount of interprismatic enamel compared to human enamel while the amount and width of interprismatic enamel bands in porcine enamel were evidently greater. The shape of the porcine prisms was visually similar to human prisms, although dimensions were significantly different. However, bovine prisms differed in form and appeared to be distinctly elongated. Conclusions Reported findings indicate that the results of experimental studies carried out on bovine and porcine enamel should not be compared with the results obtained on human enamel.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the efficiency of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), EndoActivator (EA), standard needle irrigation (SNI), and XP-endo Finisher files in removing pure calcium hydroxide (pCH) and injectable CH from in vitro root resorption cavities. Using a rotary system, the root canals of 116 extracted single rooted teeth were prepared. Imitated internal resorption cavities were then created in root halves. The specimens were divided into two groups according to the form of CH (n = 58): (I) pCH; (II) injectable CH. The teeth of each group were randomly divided into six subgroups: negative control (n = 5), positive control (n = 5), PUI (n = 12), XP-endo Finisher (n = 12), EA (n = 12), and SNI (n = 12). The root canals were irrigated using NaOCl and EDTA and split longitudinally, and both halves were evaluated with a stereomicroscope. Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney U tests were used to analyze data. The present results revealed that PUI completely removed pCH in 79% and injectable CH in 70.8% of the internal resorption cavities which was significantly higher than other methods (p < 0.05). There was no statically significant difference between different forms of CH in terms of CH removal (p=0.918). The PUI technique was observed as the most efficient method of P-CH and injectable CH removal from a replicated internal resorption cavity. Finally, according to the findings, different forms of CH were comparable in terms of CH removal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the rotary instrument XP-endo Finisher for the removal of Ca(OH)2 aided by different irrigation regimens. METHODS Sixteen double-rooted upper premolar human teeth were selected for the study. Thirty-two canals were prepared using a ProTaper Next rotary system up to X3. Then, the canals were filled with Ca(OH)2. The volume of Ca(OH)2 inside the canals was measured by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT). After that, the teeth were randomly allocated into two experimental groups, i.e., A and B (n = 16 canals). In group A, Ca(OH)2 was removed using the master apical file (X3). In group B, Ca(OH)2 was removed using a XP-endo finisher. In half of both groups (n = 8), syringe irrigation (SI) was used, while passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) was used for the other half. After removal, the remaining volume of Ca(OH)2 was measured. All data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA with Tukey's post hoc test. RESULTS The percentages of remaining Ca(OH)2 in the apical thirds of all canals were significantly higher as compared with the middle and coronal thirds in all groups (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between different files and techniques (p > 0.05). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study presents a new method for the removal of Ca(OH)2 from root canals.

Abstract
Aim The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of hand file (K-file), rotary file (HERO shaper), and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI; U-file) in removing Ca(OH)2 from the root canal. Materials and Methods Thirty single-rooted teeth were collected and decoronated to standardize the length to 14 mm. Cleaning and shaping were conducted using HERO shaper rotary files (up to no. 25, 4% taper). Ca(OH)2 powder was mixed with normal saline and filled into the canals using lentulo spiral and the orifice was sealed with zinc oxide eugenol. After 7 days of incubation, samples were divided into three groups of 10 samples each: Group I (hand files)-no. 20 K-file; Group II (rotary files)-no. 25, 4% HERO shaper; Group III (PUI)-no. 20 U-file. Ca(OH)2 paste was removed using 2 mL of 3% sodium hypochlorite solution followed by 1-minute activation of the respective file system. All the samples were finally irrigated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and flushed with distilled water. Results Ultrasonic group was more effective in removing Ca(OH)2 followed by HERO shaper and hand file. Conclusion It was concluded that PUI had the highest ability to remove Ca(OH)2 from the root canal walls.

Abstract
Background In recent years, fibre-reinforced composite posts have been proposed for the restoration of root filled teeth as an alternative to pre-fabricated posts or metal dowels. Aims and objectives The aim of the study was to analyze the effect of endodontic irrigants used for removal of calcium hydroxide on the push-out bond strength of fiber posts to root canal dentin. Methods Forty human permanent single-rooted mandibular premolars with relatively straight roots were taken and access cavities were prepared and biomechanical preparation done using Rotar Y protaper file till size F2. The samples were divided into Experimental group and Control group. In Experimental groups Intracanal dressing of calcium hydroxide was removed by 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA (Group1), MTAD (Group II) and Qmix (Group III). Control group did not receive Intracanal calcium hydroxide dressing. Canals were obturated using size F2 protaper gutta-percha points and AH plus sealer. After storage for 24 hours, post space was prepared. Forty Tenax fiber post (Coltene) were cemented with Rely X U200 resin. The roots were then transversally sectioned into 3 slices of 1mm thickness corresponding to cervical, middle and apical third. The slices obtained were subjected to micro-push-out bond strength test using a universal testing machine. The data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA test. P value of .05 was considered as statistically significant level. Results The mean push-out bond strength values for controls, NaOCl/EDTA, MTAD and QMIX group at cervical third were 10.17, 15.84, 20.39 and 20.98 whereas at apical third 4.78, 8.85, 11.66 and 12.10. Conclusion Qmix showed higher push-out bond strength values followed by MTAD and NaOCl/EDTA. All the groups showed lowest push-out bond strength values in the apical third followed by middle and the maximum in the cervical region.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this scanning electron microscope study was to compare the efficacy of two techniques (EndoVac and EndoActivator) and two irrigating solutions (5.25% NaOCl in combination with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid vs. Savlon™) for removal of calcium hydroxide (CH) from the root canal walls. Settings and Design: The study was carried out in the specialty of conservative dentistry and endodontics. Materials and Methods: Forty single-canal human teeth were used. The specimens were de-coronated to obtain a standardized root length of 15 mm using a diamond disk. The canals were instrumented till F3 ProTaper and CH intracanal medicament placed in the root canal. One week later, teeth were randomly divided into one control group and six experimental groups according to different irrigation protocols with different techniques. Statistical Analysis: Kruskal–Wallis test was conducted to analyze the effect of different treatment measures with respect to three regions of tooth. Results: The results indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the two irrigation solutions and two techniques. Conclusion: To achieve the best adaptation of filling material after root canal treatment, it is crucial to remove intracanal medication from the root canal walls. However, none of the irrigation regimens and different techniques were able to completely remove the CH from the root canal wall.

Abstract
Objectives This study investigated the removal efficacy and cytotoxicity of a newly developed calcium hydroxide paste (cleaniCal, Maruchi) using N-2-methyl-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a vehicle in comparison with ApexCal (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Calcipex II (Nishika), which use different vehicles such as polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol, respectively. Materials and Methods Thirty maxillary premolars with oval-shaped canals were divided into 3 groups and the teeth were filled with one of the pastes. After removal of the paste, micro-computed tomographic (μ-CT) imaging was obtained to assess the volume of residual paste in the root canal of each tooth. The teeth were then split longitudinally and the area of the paste-coated surface was evaluated by stereomicroscopy. The cytotoxicity of each product was assessed using an agar overlay assay. The effect of each vehicle on cell viability was evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's tests to detect any significance (p < 0.05). Results In the μ-CT and stereomicroscopic analysis, cleaniCal exhibited less remnants of medicament than ApexCal and Calcipex. cleaniCal showed a higher cytotoxicity than the other pastes in the agar overlay assay. Furthermore, NMP exhibited lower cell viability compared to the other vehicles. Conclusions cleaniCal showed better removal efficacy compared to the other products. However, clinicians should be aware of the higher cytotoxicity of the NMP-based material and consider its possible adverse effects on periradicular tissue when it is overfilled.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) treatment on bond strength of resin cements to root dentin and retention force of fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) posts. Bovine root dentin was endodontically prepared and treated with Ca(OH)2 for 7 days. Root dentin for bond strength test was adhered to resin-composite with resin cements. For pull-out test, posts consisting of FRC posts and resin-composites were fabricated and cemented to root. Shear bond and pull-out tests were performed using a universal testing machine. No significant differences in bond strength and post retention force were found between Ca(OH)2 treated and untreated groups. Significant differences were found among the cements. A positive correlation was indicated between bond strength of cements and retention force of FRC posts. In conclusion, Ca(OH)2 treatment on root dentin did not affect bond strength of resin cements and retention force of FRC posts.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of laser-activated irrigation (LAI), XP-endo Finisher, CanalBrush, Vibringe, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), and conventional syringe irrigation systems on the removal of calcium hydroxide (CH) from simulated root canal irregularities. Material and Methods The root canals of one hundred and five extracted single-rooted teeth were instrumented using Reciproc rotary files up to size R40. The teeth were split longitudinally. Two of the three standard grooves were created in the coronal and apical section of one segment, and another in the middle part of the second segment. The standardized grooves were filled with CH and the root halves were reassembled. After 14 days, the specimens were randomly divided into 7 experimental groups (n=15/group). CH was removed as follows: Group 1: beveled needle irrigation; Group 2: double side-vented needle irrigation; Group 3: CanalBrush; Group 4: XP-endo Finisher; Group 5: Vibringe; Group 6: PUI; Group 7: LAI. The amount of remaining CH in the grooves was scored under a stereomicroscope at 20× magnification. Statistical evaluation was performed using Kruskal–Wallis and Bonferroni-Correction Mann–Whitney U tests. Results Groups 1 and 2 were the least efficient in eliminating CH from the grooves. Groups 6 and 7 eliminated more CH than the other protocols; however, no significant differences were found between these two groups (P>.05). Conclusions Nevertheless, none of the investigated protocols were able to completely remove all CH from all three root regions. LAI and PUI showed less residual CH than the other protocols from artificial grooves.

Abstract
Background and aim Comparison of different irrigation and agitation methods for the removal of two types of calcium hydroxide medicaments from the root canal walls. Methods Fifty extracted single rooted teeth were selected for this study. After decoronation, the root canals of these teeth were prepared to the size F3 (30 no.) using rotary ProTaper file system. These samples were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1 (n=20) were filled completely with water based calcium hydroxide (CH), Group 2 (n=20) were filled with oil based CH using lentulo spiral, Group 3 (n=5) - the positive control group received the CH as intracanal medication, but no subsequent removal, Group 4 (n=5) - the negative control did not receive CH placement. Further on, Group 1 and Group 2 were divided into four sub-groups (n=5). In sub-group A we performed conventional syringe irrigation with side-vented needle sub-group B) manual dynamic agitation, sub-group C sonic agitation using endoactivator, sub-group D passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI). Roots were split longitudinally into mesial and distal halves. Digital images of the root canal walls were acquired by a Dental Operating Microscope (DOM) and assessed by using a scoring criteria at different thirds (coronal, middle and apical) of the root canal as follows: score 1, score 2, score 3, and score 4. Data were analyzed applying one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests at a 95% confidence interval (P < 0.05). Results Statistically significant differences were not found between the experimental groups and the negative group in any one third of the root canal (P>0.05). However, a difference did exist between the experimental groups and the positive control group (P<0.05). None of the experimental groups totally removed CH substances from root canal walls. Conclusion Among all experimental groups, removal of CH was best achieved by sonic agitation using endoactivator followed by passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), manual dynamic agitation and conventional syringe irrigation with side-vented needle.

Abstract
This study compared different irrigation techniques in triple antibiotic paste (TAP) removal from root canals. Fifty-six maxillaryanterior-teeth were filled with TAP for 28 days, and assigned into 5 experimental groups (n=10): Syringe irrigation (SI), NaviTip FX (NFX), Vibringe-Syringe irrigation (V-SI), NaviTip FX-Vibringe (V-NFX), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) and positive and negative control groups (n=3 for each). Following the removal of the medicament, the remaining medicament was evaluated using 4-grade scoring-system. V-NFX and NFX showed similar performances (p>0.05) while V-NFX was significantly more efficient than SI and PUI (p<0.05) at all parts of root canals. VSI was less efficient at apical part when compared to NFX and V-NFX (p<0.05) while not significantly different from PUI and SI at all parts of the root canals (p>0.05). Regarding different parts of the root canals, V-SI and PUI were significantly less efficient at the apical part (p<0.05). In conclusion, the brush form of irrigation delivery with and without sonic activation improved the removal of TAP from the root canals when compared to ultrasonic activation, syringe irrigation or sonic activation alone.

Abstract
To compare four different techniques for removal of calcium hydroxide from straight root canals. The present study used the design suggested by Lee et al. (Int Endod J 37:607-612, 32) and van der Sluis et al. (Int Endod J 40:52-57, 17). One-hundred and ten extracted human teeth with straight root canals were prepared to ISO-size 50 and split longitudinally. Two lateral grooves were prepared, filled with calcium hydroxide and the root halves reassembled in a muffle. Calcium hydroxide was removed using one of five techniques: (1) passive ultrasonic irrigation, (2) hydrodynamic irrigation using RinsEndo®, (3) sonic irrigation using the EndoActivator®, (4) motor-driven plastic brush (CanalBrush™), and (5) manual irrigation with a syringe as the control group. Distilled water was used as irrigant. Cleanliness of the grooves was scored under a microscope with 40× magnification. For intraindividual reproducibility and interrater agreement, Cohens Kappa was calculated. Results of scoring were analyzed using a non-parametric test. Post hoc pairwise comparisons were used for irrigation techniques (α = 0.05). Passive ultrasonic irrigation performed significantly better than all other groups in the apical groove. Significant differences were found between RinsEndo and CanalBrush (P = 0.01855) and CanalBrush and syringe irrigation (P = 0.00021). In the coronal groove, passive ultrasonic irrigation performed significantly superior and hand irrigation performed significantly worse than all other groups. A statistically significant interaction was shown between irrigation technique and localization of the groove (P = 0.01358). The coronal grooves showed more remaining calcium hydroxide than the apical grooves. Complete removal of calcium hydroxide from the root canal could not be achieved with any of the techniques investigated. The highest degree of cleanliness resulted from the use of passive ultrasonic irrigation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of several irrigation protocols in the removal of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2 ] from simulated internal root resorption cavities in a complex root canal anatomy model. The 20° to 35° curved mesiobuccal roots of 94 maxillary molars were sectioned longitudinally; internal resorption cavities were prepared in the apical third of the canal walls. Calcium hydroxide was placed into the cavities and the root halves reassembled. Four teeth were used as controls, and 90 teeth were randomly divided into six experimental groups (n = 15), according to the irrigation protocols used: syringe irrigation; H2 O2 (HP); Navitip FX; Vibringe-syringe; Vibringe-NaviTip FX; ultrasonically activated irrigation (UAI) using an ultrasonic K-file. In the HP group, 2.5% NaOCl and 3% H2 O2 were used, while 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTA were used in the remaining groups. Stereomicroscope images and radiographs were used to measure the remaining Ca(OH)2 . The model proved to be suitable for simulating complex anatomy. Positive correlation was found between stereomicroscope and radiographic analyses (P < 0.05). UAI removed significantly more Ca(OH)2 than the other experimental groups (P < 0.05). The HP group was the least efficient protocol (P < 0.05). It would appear that a reliable model has been developed that simulates complex root canal anatomy. Irrigant activation protocols enhanced Ca(OH)2 removal.

Abstract
To evaluate the effectiveness of different irrigation solutions and ultrasonic activation of irrigation solutions on removal of triple antibiotic paste (TAP) from root canals of the simulated immature teeth. Fifty single-rooted teeth were used. TAP was placed into each root canal, and specimens were stored in distilled water for 4 weeks at 37°C. After 4 weeks, the temporary coronal seal was removed and the samples were randomly divided into five groups as follows: (i) saline; (ii) ultrasonic activation of saline; (iii) NaOCl; (iv) ultrasonic activation of NaOCl; (v) chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX). The amount of remaining TAP on the canal walls was measured under stereomicroscope with 30× magnification. The data were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey test at a significance level of 0.05. There were statistically differences among CHX and ultrasonic activation of NaOCl and other groups (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among the ultrasonic activation of saline, NaOCl, and saline groups (p > 0.05). Irrigation solutions and ultrasonic activation of the irrigation solutions could not completely remove the triple antibiotic paste from simulated immature root canals. Ultrasonic activation of the NaOCl gave the best and CHX was the worst results.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of different techniques in removing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the root canal. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four freshly extracted mandibular premolars were instrumented using ProTaper rotary instruments. The teeth were longitudinally split into two halves, cleaned of debris. The two halves were then reassembled and filled with Ca(OH)2 and were divided into four groups. In Group I, the teeth were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and 5 mL of 17% of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. In Group II, the teeth were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl and a rotary ProTaper F3 instrument was used. In Group III, the teeth were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl and agitated using an ultrasonic unit. In Group IV, the teeth were irrigated with 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl and a CanalBrush was used to remove Ca(OH)2. The roots were disassembled, and photographs were taken. The amount of residual Ca(OH)2 was calculated using an image analysis software as a percentage of the total canal surface area. The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey test. Results: CanalBrush and ultrasonic techniques showed significantly less residual Ca(OH)2 than irrigants and rotary techniques. There was no significant difference between the rotary and irrigant techniques. Conclusion: None of the techniques used were completely able to remove Ca(OH)2 from the root canals. But the CanalBrush and ultrasonic techniques were significantly better than the rotary instrument and irrigant groups.

Abstract
Objective Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) has been used in endodontics as an intracanal medicament due to its antimicrobial effects and its ability to inactivate bacterial endotoxin. The inability to totally remove this intracanal medicament from the root canal system, however, may interfere with the setting of eugenol-based sealers or inhibit bonding of resin to dentin, thus presenting clinical challenges with endodontic treatment. This study used a chemical titration method to measure residual Ca(OH)2 left after different endodontic irrigation methods. Material and Methods Eighty-six human canine roots were prepared for obturation. Thirty teeth were filled with known but different amounts of Ca(OH)2 for 7 days, which were dissolved out and titrated to quantitate the residual Ca(OH)2 recovered from each root to produce a standard curve. Forty-eight of the remaining teeth were filled with equal amounts of Ca(OH)2 followed by gross Ca(OH)2 removal using hand files and randomized treatment of either: 1) Syringe irrigation; 2) Syringe irrigation with use of an apical file; 3) Syringe irrigation with added 30 s of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), or 4) Syringe irrigation with apical file and PUI (n=12/group). Residual Ca(OH)2 was dissolved with glycerin and titrated to measure residual Ca(OH)2 left in the root. Results No method completely removed all residual Ca(OH)2. The addition of 30 s PUI with or without apical file use removed Ca(OH)2 significantly better than irrigation alone. Conclusions This technique allowed quantification of residual Ca(OH)2. The use of PUI (with or without apical file) resulted in significantly lower Ca(OH)2 residue compared to irrigation alone.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of endodontic instrument systems in the removal of calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)(2)] from simulated immature teeth. The root canals of 106 human single-rooted teeth were shaped with ProTaper rotary files up to an F5 file size. Simulation of roots with immature apices was carried out using size 4 green 1.5-mm diameter Unicore drills. A non-setting Ca(OH)(2) was injected into each root canal and inserted into the working length using lentulo spiral, after which cotton pellets were placed over canal orifices. The apical and coronal side of the roots were then sealed with glass ionomer cement and light cured. Specimens were stored in distilled water for 3 months at 37 °C. After 3 months, the temporary coronal seal was removed and the samples were randomly divided into five experimental groups according to the method used for Ca(OH)(2) removal (ProTaper, Reciproc, OneShape, WaveOne, and Manual) (n = 20), one positive control group (n = 3) and one negative control group (n = 3). The amount of remaining Ca(OH)(2) in the canal walls was measured under a stereomicroscope at 30× magnification. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test at a significance level of 0.05. Positive and negative control groups were found to be statistically different from all other groups (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences among the ProTaper, Reciproc, OneShape, WaveOne, and Manual groups (p > 0.05). As a conclusion, none of the techniques completely removed Ca(OH)(2) from simulated immature teeth.

After 3 months, the temporary coronal seal was removed and the samples were randomly divided into: (a) saline (n = 20), (b) ultrasonic activation of saline (n = 20), (c) sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (n = 20), (d) ultrasonic activation of NaOCl (n = 15), (e) chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) (n = 20) and one positive control group (n = 3) and one negative control group (n = 3). The amount of remaining Ca(OH)2 on the canal walls was measured under stereomicroscope with 30× magnification. Comparisons between groups were made by the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn post-test at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: There were no significant differences among the saline, ultrasonic activation of saline, NaOCl, ultrasonic activation of NaOCl and CHX (p > 0.05) groups. Conclusions: Irrigation solutions and ultrasonic activation of the irrigation solutions could not completely remove Ca(OH)2 from the simulated immature root canals.

Abstract
INTRODUÇÃO: Remanescentes de Hidróxido de Cálcio [Ca(OH)2] podem interferir na qualidade da obturação endodôntica. OBJETIVO : Avaliar a eficácia da Irrigação Ultrassônica Passiva (IUP) associada à técnica convencional na remoção de medicação intracanal à base de Ca(OH)2. METODOLOGIA: Trinta dentes humanos anteriores monorradiculares foram usados. Os canais radiculares foram preparados com instrumentos manuais tipo K e preenchidos com medicação intracanal à base de Ca(OH)2, contendo PMCC e propilenoglicol. Após sete dias, a pasta de Ca(OH)2 foi removida de todos os canais radiculares com um instrumento manual e irrigação de NaOCl 1% com seringa. Os espécimes foram randomizados em dois grupos (n=12) de acordo com a irrigação final: Irrigação Manual - agitação manual de EDTA 17 % e irrigação de NaOCl 1%; IUP - agitação ultrassônica de NaOCl 1% (três ativações de 20s) seguida da ativação de EDTA 17% por 1 min. O Grupo Controle (n=6) não recebeu medicação intracanal. Todos os espécimes foram clivados e a quantidade de Ca(OH)2 remanescente foi calculada com o auxílio do estereomicroscrópio (20×). Os testes Kruskall-Wallis e Wilcoxon foram utilizados para avaliar a porcentagem de Ca(OH)2 remanescente. RESULTADO: O grupo da IUP apresentou, estatisticamente, as menores porcentagens de Ca(OH)2 remanescente, quando comparado ao grupo da Irrigação Manual, independentemente dos terços analisados (P < 0,05). O terço apical apresentou a maior quantidade de medicação residual, em ambos os grupos (P < 0,05). CONCLUSÃO : A associação da IUP com a técnica convencional demonstrou ser mais eficiente na remoção de medicação intracanal à base de Ca(OH)2 do que a combinação da Irrigação Manual com a técnica convencional.

Abstract
Calcium hydroxide (CH) dressing residues can compromise endodontic sealing. This study aimed to evaluate the amount of remaining CH in root canals after mechanical removal by four groups of irrigation techniques including needle irrigation only, ProTaper file, EndoActivator, and ultrasonic file. Fifteen extracted single-rooted teeth were collected and used for all four groups. The samples were firstly prepared by ProTaper rotary instruments, and then sectioned longitudinally through the long axis of the root canals, followed by final reassembling by wires. CH was kept in the canals for 7 days setting. The removal procedure began with 5 mL of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) followed by 1 mL of 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and a final irrigation with 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl solution for all groups. No additional agitation of the irrigant was performed in group 1, while agitation for 20 s between irrigants was done with F2 ProTaper rotary file in group 2, EndoActivator with tip size 25/.04 in group 3 and by an ultrasonic file 25/.02 in group 4. The total activation time was 60 s. The roots were then disassembled and captured by digital camera. The ratio of CH coated surface area to the surface area of the whole canal as well as each third of the canal was calculated. The data were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA using post hoc Tukey test. Results showed that none of the four techniques could remove all CH. No significant difference was found between EndoActivator and ultrasonic techniques. However, they both removed significantly more CH than ProTaper and needle irrigation (P=0.0001). In conclusion, the sonic and ultrasonic agitation techniques were more effective in removing intracanal medicaments than the ProTaper rotary file and needle irrigation in all thirds of the canal.

Abstract
Aim: To assess the efficacy of 17% ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid and 7% maleic acid in the removal of 3 calcium hydroxide preparations placed as intracanal medicaments. Materials and Methods: The root canals of 60 single rooted premolars were prepared with a step back technique and randomly assigned into 3 experimental groups (n= 20). Group A was filled with plain calcium hydroxide mixed with distilled water in which barium sulfate was added for radio opacity, Group B was filled with Apexcal and Group C was filled with Metapex. After 7 days each group was divided into 2 sub groups (n= 10). The medicaments were retrieved with 17% EDTA (first sub group) and 7% maleic acid (second sub group). Along with the above irrigants manual and ultrasonic agitation was used. The pre and post removal volume of medicaments in root canals were measured using spiral computerized tomography. The percentage difference was calculated and statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U test. Results: 17% EDTA and 7% maleic acid efficiently removed calcium hydroxide, distilled water mixture (P= 0.218) and Apexcal (P= 0.684), whereas 7% maleic acid showed better retrieval capability of Metapex than 17% EDTA (P= 0.002). Conclusion: Calcium hydroxide, distilled water mixture and polyethylene glycol based calcium hydroxide were efficiently removed by 17% EDTA and 7% maleic acid. 7% maleic acid removed silicone oil based calcium hydroxide preparation better than 17% EDTA.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the smear layer influences the removal of calcium hydroxide from the root canal with manual or rotary instruments. Materials and Methods: The root canals of 48 freshly extracted single-rooted maxillary incisors were prepared to apical size 40 (n=40) and finally irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (group A), or ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) followed by sodium hypo chlorite (group B). 20 teeth were assigned to each group, while the remaining eight teeth served as positive and negative controls. Each group was divided into two subgroups of 10 teeth (subgroup I - calcium hydroxide was removed with master apical file; subgroup II - with profile file); and, in all removal procedures, citric acid was used for irrigation. The percentage of calcium hydroxide- [Ca(OH)2] coated surface area was calculated by image processing analysis. Results: Considering the root canal as a whole, the removal of Ca(OH)2 from the dentinal walls in group B showed significantly better results (P<0.05) as compared to group A. Conclusions: Under the conditions of this study, it can be concluded that the smear layer is important in the removal of calcium hydroxide.

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the effect of method of calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing removal, on sealing ability of Gutta Flow and Activ GP. Materials and Methods: Seventy extracted mandibular premolars were sectioned at CEJ and canals were prepared with profile 4% rotary file till #40. Canals were filled with calcium hydroxide, coronally sealed with Cavit G and stored at 37°C. After 7 days, samples were divided on the basis of calcium hydroxide removal method (Master apical file, Navi Tip FX, and F File) and obturating material (Activ GP and Gutta Flow). Three coats of nail polish were applied except 2 mm around apical foramen and samples were immersed in India ink dye, sectioned, and observed under stereomicroscope for microleakage. Results: The results were statistically analyzed with one way ANOVA-F with Tukey HSD test with the null hypothesis set as 5%. Conclusions: The seal of the canal system was adversely impacted by residual calcium hydroxide when Activ GP and Gutta Flow were used as obturating material and the sealing ability of Activ GP and Gutta Flow was better when MAF was used for removal of calcium hydroxide than F file or Navi tip FX.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prior calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH](2)) intracanal placement on the bond strength of AH Plus (Dentsply DeTrey GmbH, Konstanz, Germany), iRoot SP (Innovative Bioceramix, Vancouver, BC, Canada), and MTA Fillapex (Angelus Soluções Odontológicas, Londrina, PR, Brazil). METHODS The root canals of 90 human incisor teeth were prepared with the ProTaper System (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) up to a master apical file size of F5. Canals were filled using the single-cone technique either immediately (the control group, n = 30) or after a 7-day Ca(OH)(2) placement. Ca(OH)(2) removal was performed either manually using F5 with distilled water irrigation (the Ca[OH](2) group, n = 30) or manually using Protaper F5 followed by passive ultrasonic irrigation with 2.5 % NaOCl with a final flush of 17 % EDTA and then distilled water (the PUI group, n = 30). After obturation, a 2-mm-thick middle section of each root was then subjected to push-out testing. RESULTS Using 1-way analysis of variance, AH Plus showed a higher bond strength than iRoot SP and MTA Fillapex in the control group (P < .05). With prior Ca(OH)(2) placement, AH Plus and iRoot SP showed a similar bond strength (P > .05), which was higher than MTA Fillapex (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Prior Ca(OH)(2) placement seemed to improve the dislodgment resistance of iRoot SP but did not affect AH Plus and MTA Fillapex.

Abstract
Calcium hydroxide has been included within several materials and antimicrobial formulations that are used in a number of treatment modalities in endodontics. These include, inter-appointment intracanal medicaments, pulp-capping agents and root canal sealers. Calcium hydroxide formulations are also used during treatment of root perforations, root fractures and root resorption and have a role in dental traumatology, for example, following tooth avulsion and luxation injuries. The purpose of this paper is to review the properties and clinical applications of calcium hydroxide in endodontics and dental traumatology including its antibacterial activity, antifungal activity, effect on bacterial biofilms, the synergism between calcium hydroxide and other agents, its effects on the properties of dentine, the diffusion of hydroxyl ions through dentine and its toxicity. Pure calcium hydroxide paste has a high pH (approximately 12.5-12.8) and is classified chemically as a strong base. Its main actions are achieved through the ionic dissociation of Ca(2+) and OH(-) ions and their effect on vital tissues, the induction of hard-tissue deposition and the antibacterial properties. The lethal effects of calcium hydroxide on bacterial cells are probably due to protein denaturation and damage to DNA and cytoplasmic membranes. It has a wide range of antimicrobial activity against common endodontic pathogens but is less effective against Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. Calcium hydroxide is also an effective anti-endotoxin agent. However, its effect on microbial biofilms is controversial.

Abstract
This study evaluated the efficacy of 2 types of rotary instruments employed in association with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or EDTA in removing calcium hydroxide (CH) residues from root canals dentin walls. Forty-two mandibular human incisors were instrumented with the ProTaper System up to F2 instrument, irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl followed by 17% EDTA and filled with a CH intracanal dressing. After 7 days, the CH dressing was removed using 4 techniques: NiTi rotary instrument size 25, 0.06 taper (K3 Endo) and irrigation with 17% EDTA (Group 1), NiTi rotary F1 instrument (ProTaper) and irrigation with 17% EDTA (Group 2), NiTi rotary instrument size 25, 0.06 taper and irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl (Group 3) and NiTi rotary F1 instrument and irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl (Group 4). Two roots without intracanal dressing were used as negative controls. Teeth were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, in the cervical and apical canal thirds. None of the techniques removed the CH dressing completely. In the apical and cervical thirds, F1 instrument was better than instrument size 25, 0.06 taper in removing CH residues (p<0.05), regardless of the final irrigating solution. No difference was found between the irrigating solutions in the groups of F1 instrument and of instrument size 25, 0.06 taper (p>0.05). The negative controls had no CH residues on the dentin walls. In conclusion, the ProTaper F1 instrument was better than K3 Endo instrument size 25, 0.06 taper in the removal of CH intracanal medication, regardless of irrigating solution used.
