Lipids in the Classification and Identification of Coryneform Bacteria Containing Peptidoglycans Based on 2, 4-diaminobutyric Acid

Crenobacter oryzisoli sp. nov., a novel phosphate-solubilizing bacterium isolated from the paddy soil

Two Gram-staining-negative, facultative anaerobic, rod-shaped and phosphate-solubilizing strains designated SG2303T and SG2305, were isolated from paddy soil in China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA gene sequences indicated that SG2303T and SG2305 represented a member of the genus Crenobacter within the family Neisseriaceae of the phylum Pseudomonadota. Strain SG2303T displayed higher 16 S rRNA gene sequence similarities with members of the genus Crenobacter ranging from 93.5 to 94.0%. Strains C. luteus YIM 78141T and C. cavernae K1W11S-77T were closest related to the isolated strains and were considered as type strains. Growth of strain SG2303T occurred at 10-55 °C (optimum 37 °C), pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum pH 6.0-7.0) and 0-1% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0%). The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain SG2303T and its closely related taxa were 76.1-78.2% and 20.5-22.1%, respectively. The genomic DNA G + C content was 62.2%. The quinone of strain SG2303T was Q-8. The major fatty acids (> 10%) of strain SG2303T were C16:0 (30.6%), summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c and/or C16:1ω6c) (26.0%) and C12:0 3OH (12.1%). The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phospholipids (PL), glycolipid (GL) and unidentified lipids (UL). Based on the results of the phylogenetic, physiological, biochemical, and morphological analysis, strain SG2303T is recognized as a novel species of the genus Crenobacter, for which the name Crenobacter oryzisoli sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SG2303T (= GDMCC 1.3970T = JCM 36468T). In addition, SG2303T was also able of phosphorus solubilization and promoting the growth of rice seeds. Strain SG2303T exhibited a relatively high dissolvable phosphorus content of 2.52 µg·mL- 1.

Flavobacterium adhaerens sp. nov. and Flavobacterium maritimum sp. nov., two novel flavobacteria isolated from the Pearl River Estuary

Two strains, designated as SYSU M80004T and SYSU M80005T, were isolated from water sampled in the Pearl River Estuary, Guangzhou, Guangdong, PR China. The strains were Gram-stain-negative and aerobic. Strain SYSU M80004T could grow at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 22-30 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and in the presence of 0-1 % NaCl (w/v; optimum 0 %). Strain SYSU M80005T could grow at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 4-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and in the presence of 0-1 % NaCl (w/v; optimum 0%). Both strains contained MK-6 as the predominant menaquinone. C16 : 0 and iso-C15 : 0 were identified as the major fatty acids (>10 %) of strain SYSU M80004T while strain SYSU M80005T contained iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH as major fatty acids. Phosphatidylethanolamine was present as the major polar lipid in both strains. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between these two strains and their closest relatives were 73.5-79.3 % and 19.6-23.2 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene and genomic sequences indicated they belonged to the genus Flavobacterium. Therefore, on the basis of phenotypic, physiological, chemotaxonomic and genomic evidence, two novel species, Flavobacterium adhaerens sp. nov. (type strain=SYSU M80004T=CDMCC 1.4522T=KCTC 102268T) and Flavobacterium maritimum sp. nov. (type strain=SYSU M80005T=CGMCC 1.4523T= KCTC 102269T) are proposed.

Coralliovum pocilloporae gen. nov., sp. nov. and Sanyastnella coralliicola gen. nov., sp. nov. isolated from coral tissue: proposal of two new families, Coralliovaceae fam. nov. and Sanyastnellaceae fam. nov

A genome-based polyphasic approach was used to determine the taxonomic status of two novel bacterial strains, SCSIO 12594T and SCSIO 12813T, isolated from tissues of a coral. Both strains were Gram-stain-negative and facultatively anaerobic. The genome sizes of strains SCSIO 12594T and SCSIO 12813T were 3.9 Mb and 4.1 Mb, respectively, and they possessed DNA G+C contents of 55.1 and 46.2 mol%, respectively . Both strains were found to be catalase- and oxidase-positive, while SCSIO 12594T also could hydrolyse starch. SCSIO 12594T was observed to grow at between 20 and 37 °C (optimally at 25 °C) and at a pH range from 6 to 7 and in the presence of 3-7 % (w/v) NaCl. The growth of SCSIO 12813T required seawater and occurred at 20-30 °C (optimum, 25 °C), pH 5-8 (optimum, pH 6-7) and in the presence of 3-3.7 % (w/v) NaCl. The results of 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analysis indicated that SCSIO 12594T shared 92.97 % or less sequence similarity with its closest relatives Rhodobium gokarnense JA173T and other members of the order Hyphomicrobiales. The results of 16S rRNA sequences-based phylogenetic analysis of SCSIO 12813T indicated that Croceimicrobium hydrocarbonivorans A20-9T (89.34 %) was the most closely related species. SCSIO 12594T and SCSIO 12813T can be readily separated from their closest relatives, as indicated by the results of phylogenomic analysis, low average nucleotide indexes, average amino acid identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridisation (dDDH) similarities and associated phenotypic and chemical data. Consequently, the two coral isolates are considered to represent two novel genera and species for which the names Coralliovum pocilloporae gen. nov., sp. nov. and Sanyastnella coralliicola gen. nov., sp. nov. are proposed, the type strains are SCSIO 12594T (= JCM 35320T = GDMCC 1.3060T) and SCSIO 12813T (= JCM 35373T = GDMCC 1.3063T), respectively. In addition, two novel families, Coralliovaceae fam. nov. and Sanyastnellaceae fam. nov are proposed to accommodate Coralliovum pocilloporae gen. nov., sp. nov. and Sanyastnella coralliicola gen. nov., sp. nov., respectively.

Ferviditalea candida gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel member of the family Paenibacillaceae isolated from a geothermal area

OBJECTIVE

The family Paenibacillaceae is linked to the order Caryophanales. Paenibacillaceae members residing in compost or soil play crucial roles in nutrient recycling and breaking down complex organic materials. However, our understanding of Paenibacillaceae remains limited.

METHODS

Strain SYSU GA230002T was conclusively identified using a polyphasic taxonomic approach frequently utilized in bacterial systematics. Standard microbiological techniques were employed to characterize the morphology and biochemistry of strain SYSU GA230002T.

RESULTS

An anaerobic and gram--negative bacterium, designated SYSU GA230002T, was isolated from geothermally heated soil of Tengchong, Yunnan Province, south-west China. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genomes showed that strain SYSU GA230002T belongs to the family Paenibacillaceae. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (<94.0 %), ANI (<71.95 %) and AAI values (<58.67 %) between strain SYSU GA230002T with other members of the family were lower than the threshold values recommended for distinguishing novel species. Growth was observed at 30-45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), pH 7.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and in 0-3.0 % (w/v) NaCl concentrations (optimum, 0 %). The major fatty acids detected were anteiso-C15:0, iso-C16:0 and iso-C17:0. The polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified aminolipid and two unidentified glycolipids. The respiratory quinone was MK-7. The DNA G + C content of strain SYSU GA230002T was 49.87 %.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of morphological, physiological properties, and chemotaxonomic characteristics, this strain is proposed to represent a new species of a new genus Ferviditalea candida gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of the type species is SYSU GA230002T (=KCTC 25726T = GDMCC 1.4160T).

Azotosporobacter soli gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel nitrogen-fixing bacterium isolated from paddy soil

A nitrogen-fixing strain designated SG130T was isolated from paddy soil in Fujian Province, China. Strain SG130T was Gram-staining-negative, rod-shaped, and strictly anaerobic. Strain SG130T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the type strains Dendrosporobacter quercicolus DSM 1736T (91.7%), Anaeroarcus burkinensis DSM 6283T (91.0%) and Anaerospora hongkongensis HKU 15T (90.9%). Furthermore, the phylogenetic and phylogenomic analysis also suggested strain SG130T clustered with members of the family Sporomusaceae and was distinguished from other genera within this family. Growth of strain SG130T was observed at 25-45 °C (optimum 30 °C), pH 6.0-9.5 (optimum 7.0) and 0-1% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 0.1%). The quinones were Q-8 and Q-9. The polar lipids were phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), glycolipid (GL), phospholipid (PL) and an unidentified lipid (UL). The major fatty acids (> 10%) were iso-C13:0 3OH (26.6%), iso-C17:1 (15.6%) and iso-C15:1 F (11.4%). The genomic DNA G + C content was 50.7%. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain SG130T and the most closely related type strain D. quercicolus DSM 1736T (ANI 68.0% and dDDH 20.3%) were both below the cut-off level for species delineation. The average amino acid identity (AAI) between strain SG130T and the most closely related type strain D. quercicolus DSM 1736T was 63.2%, which was below the cut-off value for bacterial genus delineation (65%). Strain SG130T possessed core genes (nifHDK) involved in nitrogen fixation, and nitrogenase activity (106.38 μmol C2H4 g-1 protein h-1) was examined using the acetylene reduction assay. Based on the above results, strain SG130T is confirmed to represent a novel genus of the family Sporomusaceae, for which the name Azotosporobacter soli gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SG130T (= GDMCC 1.3312T = JCM 35641T).

Two Novel Alkaliphilic Species Isolated from Saline-Alkali Soil in China: Halalkalibacter flavus sp. nov., and Halalkalibacter lacteus sp. nov

The degradation of farmland in China underscores the need for developing and utilizing saline-alkali soil. Soil health relies on microbial activity, which aids in the restoration of the land's ecosystem, and hence it is important to understand microbial diversity. In the present study, two Gram-stain-positive strains HR 1-10T and J-A-003T were isolated from saline-alkali soil. Preliminary analysis suggested that these strains could be a novel species. Therefore, the taxonomic positions of these strains were evaluated using polyphasic analysis. Phylogenetic and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that these strains should be assigned to the genus Halalkalibacter. Cell wall contained meso-2,6-diaminopimelic acid. The polar lipids present in both strains were diphosphatidyl-glycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and an unidentified phospholipid. The major fatty acids (>10%) were anteiso-C15:0, C16:0 and iso-C15:0. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA#x2013;DNA hybridization values were below the threshold values (95% and 70%, respectively) for species delineation. Based on the above results, the strains represent two novel species of the genus Halalkalibacter, for which the names Halalkalibacter flavus sp. nov., and Halalkalibacter lacteus sp. nov., are proposed. The type strains are HR 1-10T (=GDMCC 1.2946T = MCCC 1K08312T = JCM 36285T), and J-A-003T (=GDMCC 1.2949T = MCCC 1K08417T = JCM 36286T).

Draconibacterium aestuarii sp.nov., a Glycolipid-Producing Bacterium Isolated from Tidal Flat Sediment and Emended Description of the Genus Draconibacterium

A facultatively anaerobic, Gram-negative, curved rod-shaped bacterium (4.0-17.0 μm long, 0.6-0.9 μm wide), designated Z1-6T, was obtained from tidal flat sediment collected from YueAo village in Zhoushan, Zhejiang, People's Republic of China. Strain Z1-6T occurred at 15-45 °C (optimum 28-32 °C), pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum 7.0-7.5), and in the presence of 1-5% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 1-2%). The strain contained iso-C15:0 and antesio-C15:0 as the major fatty acids. An unsaturated menaquinone with seven isoprene units (MK-7) was the predominant respiratory quinone. The polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), one aminophospholipid (APL), two phospholipids (PL1 and PL2), three glycolipids (GL1, GL2, and GL3), and two unidentified lipids (L1 and L2). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Z1-6T was 39.2%, and the genome size was 6.4 Mb. The strain showed the highest average nucleotide identity (ANI) value of 73.5-74.6%, digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of 19.3-20%, average amino acid identity (AAI) value of 72.0-73.1% with the members of genus Draconibacterium. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and genome revealed that strain Z1-6T formed a distinct branch in the clade of the genus Draconibacterium. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic analyses and genomic data, strain Z1-6T represents a novel species of the genus Draconibacterium, for which the name Draconibacterium aestuarii sp. nov. (The type strain Z1-6T = MCCC 1K07533T = KCTC 92310T) is proposed.

Stomatohabitans albus gen. nov., sp. nov., an oral living facultative anaerobic actinobacteria isolated form Steller sea lion, and proposal of Stomatohabitantaceae fam. nov. and Stomatohabitantales ord. nov

Two novel actinobacteria, designated as SYSU M7M538T and SYSU M7M531, were isolated from oral of Eumetopias jubatus in Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, China. The cells of these microorganisms stained Gram-positive and were rod shaped. These strains were facultative anaerobic, and catalase-positive. Optimal growth occurred at 37 °C and pH 7.0 over 7 days of cultivation. Both strains possessed diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphocholine as the major polar lipids. The main menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The major fatty acids were C16:0, C17:1w8c, C17:0, C18:1w9c and C18:0. Analyses of genome sequences revealed that the genome size of SYSU M7M538T was 2.1 Mbp with G + C content of 52.5 %, while the genome size of SYSU M7M531 was 2.3 Mbp with G + C content of 52.7 %. The ANI and 16S rRNA gene analysis results showed that the pairwise similarities between the two strains and other recognized Nitriliruptoria species were less than 64.9 % and 89.0 %, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strains SYSU M7M538T and SYSU M7M531 formed a well-separated phylogenetic branch distinct from other orders of Nitriliruptoria. Based on the data presented here, these two strains are considered to represent a novel species of a novel genus, for which the name Stomatohabitans albus gen. nov., sp. nov., with the type strain SYSU M7M538T (=KCTC 59113T = GDMCC 1.4286T), are proposed. We also propose that these organisms represent a novel family named Stomatohabitantaceae fam. nov. of a novel order Stomatohabitantales ord. nov.

Jeotgalibacillus haloalkalitolerans sp. nov., a novel alkalitolerant and halotolerant bacterium, isolated from the confluence of the Fenhe River and the Yellow River

A Gram-stain positive, aerobic, alkalitolerant and halotolerant bacterium, designated HH7-29 T, was isolated from the confluence of the Fenhe River and the Yellow River in Shanxi Province, PR China. Growth occurred at pH 6.0-12.0 (optimum, pH 8.0-8.5) and 15-40℃ (optimum, 32℃) with 0.5-24% NaCl (optimum, 2-9%). The predominant fatty acids (> 10.0%) were iso-C15:0 and anteiso-C15:0. The major menaquinones were MK-7 and MK-8. The polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol and two unidentified phospholipids. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain HH7-29 T was a member of the genus Jeotgalibacillus, exhibiting high sequence similarity to the 16S rRNA gene sequences of Jeotgalibacillus alkaliphilus JC303T (98.4%), Jeotgalibacillus salarius ASL-1 T (98.1%) and Jeotgalibacillus alimentarius YKJ-13 T (98.1%). The genomic DNA G + C content was 43.0%. Gene annotation showed that strain HH7-29 T had lower protein isoelectric points (pIs) and possessed genes related to ion transport and organic osmoprotectant uptake, implying its potential tolerance to salt and alkali. The average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization values, amino acid identity values, and percentage of conserved proteins values between strain HH7-29 T and its related species were 71.1-83.8%, 19.5-27.4%, 66.5-88.4% and 59.8-76.6%, respectively. Based on the analyses of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic features, strain HH7-29 T represents a novel species of the genus Jeotgalibacillus, for which the name Jeotgalibacillus haloalkalitolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is HH7-29 T (= KCTC 43417 T = MCCC 1K07541T).

Chelativorans salis sp. nov., a slightly halophilic bacterium isolated from an enrichment system with saline lake sediment

A Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, and slightly halophilic alphaproteobacterium, designated strain EGI FJ00035T, was isolated from enrichment sediment samples of a saline lake in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, PR China. The taxonomic position of the isolate was determined using the polyphasic taxonomic and phylogenomic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain EGI FJ00035T formed a distinct clade with 'Chelativorans alearense' UJN715 and 'Chelativorans xinjiangense' lm93 with sequence similarities of 98.44 and 98.22 %, respectively, while sharing less than 96.7 % with other valid type strains. The novel isolate could be distinguished from other species of the genus Chelativorans by its distinct phenotypic, physiological, and genotypic characteristics. Optimal growth of strain EGI FJ00035T occurred on marine agar 2216 at pH 7.0 and 30 °C. The major respiratory quinone was Q-10, while the major fatty acids (>5 %) were C19 : 0 cyclo ω8c, summed feature 8 (C17 : 1 ω6c and/or C17 : 1 ω7c), C16 : 0, C18 : 0, and iso-C17 : 0. The detected polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, unidentified aminophospholipids, unidentified glycolipids, and an unidentified lipid. Based on its genome sequence, the G+C content of strain EGI FJ00035T was 63.2 mol%. The average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of strain EGI FJ00035T against related members of the genus Chelativorans were below the thresholds for delineation of a novel species. According our polyphasic taxonomic data, strain EGI FJ00035T represents a new species of the genus Chelativorans, for which the name Chelativorans salis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel isolate is EGI FJ00035T (=KCTC 92251T=CGMCC 1.19480T).

Rathayibacter tanaceti sp. nov., a Novel Actinobacterium from Tanacetum vulgare Infested by Foliar Nematode Aphelenchoides sp

Two novel yellow-pigmented, rod-shaped and non-motile coryneform actinobacteria, strains VKM Ac-2596T and VKM Ac-2761, were isolated from a plant Tanacetum vulgare (Asteraceae) infested by foliar nematode Aphelenchoides sp. The strains exhibited the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Rathayibacter agropyri CA4T (99.71%), Rathayibacter rathayi DSM 7485T (99.65%) and Rathayibacter iranicus VKM Ac-1602T (99.65%). The pairwise average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between VKM Ac-2596T and VKM Ac-2671 towards the type strains of Rathayibacter species did not exceed 85.24% and 29.40%, respectively, that are well below the thresholds for species delineation. The target strains had key chemotaxonomic properties typical of the genus Rathayibacter, namely, the DAB-based peptidoglycan, rhamnose and mannose as the predominant sugars and a rhamnomannan in the cell, the major menaquinone MK-10 and fatty acids of iso-anteiso type, with a large proportion of anteiso-15:0. The strains showed clear differences from the recognized Rathayibacter species in several phenotypic characteristics, including the difference in the composition of cell wall glycopolymers. Based on the results obtained in this study and the data published previously, we provide a description of a new species, Rathayibacter tanaceti sp. nov., with DL-642T (= VKM Ac-2596T = LMG 33114T) as the type strain.

Alteromonas arenosi sp. nov., a novel bioflocculant-producing bacterium, isolated from intertidal sand

A novel Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic and bioflocculant-producing bacterium, designated as ASW11-36T, was isolated from an intertidal sand collected from coastal areas of Qingdao, PR China. Growth occurred at 15-40 °C (optimum, 30 °C), pH 7.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and with 1.5-7.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2.5-3.0%). In the whole-cell fatty acid pattern prevailed C16:0 and summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c). The major isoprenoid quinone was determined to be Q-8 and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG), one unidentified aminolipid (AL), one unidentified glycolipid (GL), and two lipids (L1, L2). Based on the phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA gene sequences and 618 single-copy orthologous clusters, strain ASW11-36T could represent a novel member of the genus Alteromonas and was closely related to Alteromonas flava P0211T (98.4%) and Alteromonas facilis P0213T (98.3%). The pairwise average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values of the ASW11-36T genome assembly against the closely related species genomes were 71.8% and 21.7%, respectively, that clearly lower than the proposed thresholds for species. Based on phenotypic, phylogenetic, and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain ASW11-36T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Alteromonas, for which the name Alteromonas arenosi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ASW11-36T (= KCTC 82496T = MCCC 1K05585T). In addition, the strain yielded 65% of flocculating efficiency in kaolin suspension with CaCl2 addition. The draft genome of ASW11-36T shared abundant putative CAZy family related genes, especially involved in the biosynthesis of exopolysaccharides, implying its potential environmental and biological applications.

Mesonia profundi sp. nov., isolated from deep-sea sediment of the Mariana Trench

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-flagellated, non-gliding bacterial strain, designated MT50T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the Mariana Trench. Optimal growth of strain MT50T was observed at 25 °C, pH 7.0-7.5 and in the presence of 3-5 % (w/v) NaCl. The strain was positive for oxidase and catalase. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain MT50T is affiliated with the genus Mesonia, showing the highest sequence similarity (98.5 %) to the type strain of Mesonia ostreae. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values between strain MT50T and four closely related type strains of known Mesonia species (14.1-54.8 % and 72.7-86.8 %, respectively) were all below the threshold values to discriminate bacterial species, indicating that strain MT50T is affiliated with a novel species within the genus. The genomic G+C content deduced from the genome of strain MT50T was 36.2 mol%. The major fatty acids of strain MT50T were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and anteiso-C15 : 0. The predominant respiratory quinone of the strain was MK-6. The polar lipids of strain MT50T included phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. Based on the polyphasic data presented in this study, strain MT50T represents a novel species of the genus Mesonia, for which the name Mesonia profundi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MT50T (=MCCC 1K07833T=KCTC 92380T).

Fundicoccus culcitae sp. nov., a novel potential bacteriocin producing bacterium isolated from a spoiled eye mask

A Gram-positive, facultatively anaerobic, oval beaded-shape, oxidase-negative, and non-motile bacterium designated DM20194951T was isolated from a spoiled eye mask obtained from Guangdong, China. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, phylogenetic analysis indicated that strain DM20194951T showed the highest sequence similarity (95.8%) to Fundicoccus ignavus WS4937T. Meanwhile, strain DM20194951T could be distinguished from the type strains in the genus Fundicoccus by distinct phenotypic and genotypic traits. Strain DM20194951T grew variably with 1-2% (w/v) NaCl and tolerated pH 6.0-10.0. Growth was observed from 28 to 37 °C. The diagnostic diamino acids in the cell-wall peptidoglycan consisted of aspartic and glutamic acids as well as alanine. The predominant fatty acids were C18:1 ω9c, C16:0, and C16:1 ω9c. In the polar lipid profile, two glycolipids, three phospholipids, one phosphatidylglycerol, and one diphosphatidylglycerol were found. No respiratory quinones were detected. The DM20194951T genome is 3.2 Mb in size and contains a G + C content of 38.1%. A gene cluster for lactococcin 972 family bacteriocin production was found in the DM20194951T genome. Based on morphological, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain DM20194951T should be considered to represent a novel species in the genus Fundicoccus, for which the name Fundicoccus culcitae sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain DM20194951T (= KCTC 43472T = GDMCC 1.3614T).

Two novel alkalitolerant species Pseudalkalibacillus spartinae sp. nov. and Pseudalkalibacillus sedimenti sp. nov

In this study, two novel alkalitolerant strains (FJAT-53046T and FJAT-53715T) were isolated from sediment samples collected in Zhangzhou, PR China. Phylogeny based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that strains FJAT-53046T and FJAT-53715T were new members of the genus Pseudalkalibacillus. The two novel strains showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Pseudalkalibacillus hwajinpoensis DSM 16206T, with values of 97.4 and 97.6 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the two strains and the reference strain were 77.2 and 79.6 %, 20.9 and 30.2 %, respectively, which were below the prokaryotic species delineation thresholds. The ANI and dDDH values between strains FJAT-53046T and FJAT-53715T were 86.0 and 30.2 %, respectively, suggesting that they belonged to different species in the genus Pseudalkalibacillus. The major respiratory quinone in both strains was MK-7 and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine were the major polar lipids in both novel strains. Combined with results stemming from the determination of physical and biochemical characteristics, chemical properties, and genome analysis, strains FJAT-53046T and FJAT-53715T are proposed to represent two novel species of the genus Pseudalkalibacillus, for which the names Pseudalkalibacillus spartinae sp. nov. and Pseudalkalibacillus sedimenti sp. nov. are proposed. The type strains are FJAT-53046T (=GDMCC 1.3077T=JCM 35611T) and FJAT-53715T (=GDMCC 1.3076T=JCM 35610T), respectively.

Telluribacter roseus sp. nov., Isolated from the Kumtag Desert Soil

A pink-pigmented bacterium, designated as strain SYSU D00476T, was isolated from sandy soil collected from the Kumtag Desert in China. Colonies were opaque, smooth and of a slight convexity with a clearly defined border. Cells were rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive. Growth occurred at 4-45 ℃ (optimum at 28-30 ℃), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum at 7.0), and with 0-3.0% NaCl (w/v, optimum at 0-2.0%). Major fatty acids (> 10%) were C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c), iso-C17:0 3-OH and iso-C15:0. Polar lipids comprised of three unidentified polar aminolipids (ALs), two unidentified aminophosphoglycolipids (APLs), one unidentified glycolipid (GL) and three unidentified phospholipids (PLs). The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. The genomic DNA G + C content was 50.5%. The low digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH, 27.4%) and average nucleotide identity (ANI, 85%) values between strain SYSU D00476T and Telluribacter humicola KCTC 42819T indicated that SYSU D00476T represent a distinct species. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain SYSU D00476T belonged to the genus Telluribacter, showing 97.5% similarity with T. humicola KCTC 42819T. All these data support that strain SYSU D00476T represent a novel species of the genus Telluribacter within the family Spirosomataceae, named as Telluribacter roseus sp. nov. The type strain is SYSU D00476T (= KCTC 82285T = CGMCC 1.18647T = MCCC 1K04983T).

Clostridium brassicae sp. nov., A Strictly Anaerobic Bacterium Isolated from High-Salt Industrial Wastewater

An obligately anaerobic, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium (1.8-5.5 μm long, 0.6-0.9 μm wide), designated ZC22-4T, was isolated from a pickle-processing wastewater treatment plant in Zhejiang province, P.R. China. Strain ZC22-4T grows optimally at 37-40 °C and pH 7.0 in the presence of 1% (w/v) NaCl or 2.0% (w/v) sea salts. It contained C16:0 (25.9%), C14:0 (13.6%), and C16:1 cis 9 (10.6%) as the dominant cellular fatty acid (> 10%). Polar lipids include phosphatidylglycerol (PG), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), one unidentified phospholipid (PL), two unidentified glycolipids (GL), three unidentified amino phosphoglycolipids (APGL1-3), one unidentified aminoglycolipid (AGL), and one unidentified lipid (L). The genomic DNA G + C content of ZC22-4T was 28.7%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain ZC22-4T belonged to the genus Clostridium and formed a clade with the most closely related Clostridium aestuarii HY-45-18T (96.3%), Clostridium ganghwense HY-42-06T (95.9%). The average nucleotide identity and DNA-DNA hybridization values among the genomes of strain ZC22-4T and C. aestuarii HY-45-18T and C. ganghwense HY-42-06T were 75.7% and 77.3%, 21.7% and 23.0%, respectively. Based on the phenotypic, phylogenetic, and genetic data, strain ZC22-4T represents a novel species in the Clostridium cluster I, for which the name Clostridium brassicae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ZC22-4T (= MCCC 1K07510T = JCM 35370T).

Danxiaibacter flavus gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel bacterium of the family Chitinophagaceae isolated from forest soil on Danxia Mountain

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, short rod-shaped, yellow bacterium, designated SYSU DXS3180T, was isolated from forest soil of Danxia Mountain in PR China. Growth occurred at 15-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 7.0-8.0) and with 0-2.0 % NaCl (optimum, 0-0.5 %, w/v). Strain SYSU DXS3180T was positive for hydrolysis of Tween 20, Tween 60, Tween 80 and starch, but negative for urease, H2S production, nitrate reduction, Tween 40 and gelatin. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences showed that SYSU DXS3180T belonged to the family Chitinophagaceae. The closely related members were Foetidibacter luteolus YG09T (94.2 %), Limnovirga soli KCS-6T (93.9 %) and Filimonas endophytica SR 2-06T (93.7 %). The genome of strain SYSU DXS3180T was 7287640 bp with 5782 protein-coding genes, and the genomic DNA G+C content was 41.4 mol%. The main respiratory quinone was MK-7 and the major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 1 G. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and two unidentified polar lipids. Based on the phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain SYSU DXS3180T is proposed to represent a novel species of a novel genus named Danxiaibacter flavus gen. nov., sp. nov., within the family Chitinophagaceae. The type strain is SYSU DXS3180T (=KCTC 92895T=GDMCC 1.3825 T).

Pontibacter kalidii sp. nov., isolated from rhizosphere soil of Kalidium foliatum

A Gram-negative, aerobic, gliding motile, rod-shaped bacterium, designated XAAS-72T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Kalidium foliatum sampled in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, PR China. Cells grew at 4-45 °C, pH 5.0-8.0 and 0-8% NaCl, with optimal growth at 20-30 °C, pH 6.0-7.0 and 1-2 % NaCl. Strain XAAS-72T is closely related to members of the genus Pontibacter, namely Pontibacter korlensis CCTCC AB 206081T (97.6%) and Pontibacter flavimaris ACCC 19859T (97.2 %), and <94.6 % related to other currently described Pontibacter strains. The average nucleotide identity values between XAAS-72T and P. korlensis CCTCC AB 206081T and P. flavimaris ACCC 19859T were 77.9 and 86.9 %, respectively; the corresponding digital DNA-DNA hybridization values were 21.7 and 31.8 %. Menaquinone-7 was the predominant respiratory menaquinone. The polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminophospholipids, two unidentified glycolipids and five unidentified lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 4 (containing iso-C17 : 1 I/anteiso-C17 : 1 B), summed feature 3 (containing C16 : 1  ω7c/C16 : 1  ω6c) and iso-C15 : 0. The genome length of strain XAAS-72T was 5 054 860 bp with a genomic DNA G+C content of 54.5 mol%. The phenotypic and genotypic data suggest that strain XAAS-72T represents a novel species of the genus Pontibacter, for which the name Pontibacter kalidii sp. nov. is proposed. The strain is XAAS-72T (CGMCC 16594T=KCTC 72095T).

Halomonas flagellata sp. nov., a halophilic bacterium isolated from saline soil in Xinjiang

A Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, motile, slightly curved rod-shaped bacterium with multiple flagella, designated strain EGI 63088T, was isolated from a bulk soil of Kalidium foliatum, collected from Wujiaqu in Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, PR China. The optimal growth temperature, salinity, and pH for strain EGI 63088T growth were 30 °C, 3% (w/v) NaCl and 8, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain EGI 63088T showed the highest sequence similarities to Halomonas heilongjiangensis 9-2T (97.94%), H. lysinitropha 3(2)T (97.51%), and H. daqiaonensis CGMCC 1.9150T (97.08%). The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between the strain EGI 63088T and H. heilongjiangensis 9-2T were 89.03 and 41.10%, respectively. The DNA G + C content of the genome for strain EGI 63088T was 66.3 mol%. The most prevalent antibiotic resistance and virulence-related genes in Halomonas genomes were Streptomyces cinnamoneu EF-Tu mutant, pilT, and cheY, respectively. The predominant fatty acids of strain EGI 63088T were summed feature 8 (C18: 1 ω6c and/or C18: 1 ω7c), summed feature 3 (C16: 1 ω6c and/or C16: 1 ω7c), and C16: 0; its major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-9 (Q-9), and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine. According to the above results, strain EGI 63088T is considered a novel species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas flagellata sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is EGI 63088T (= KCTC 92047T = CGMCC 1.19133T).

Description of Tellurirhabdus bombi sp. nov., Isolated from Bumblebee

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, non-motile, and rod-shaped bacterium, designated IE-0392T, was isolated from a bumblebee. The 16S rRNA gene sequence (highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Tellurirhabdus rosea (90.0%) and phylogenetic analysis suggest that strain IE-0392T was a member of the genus Tellurirhabdus. Strain IE-0392T optimally grew at 25 ℃ and pH 7.0. Menaquinone 7 (MK-7) was the only isoprenoid quinone present in strain IE-0392T. The major fatty acids (> 10%) of strain IE-0392T were iso-C15:0, C16:1 ω5c, and iso-C17:0 3-OH. The polar lipids of strain IE-0392T were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, unidentified aminophospholipids, unidentified aminolipid, unidentified phospholipid, and unidentified lipids. The genomic DNA G + C content of strain IE-0392T was 48.8%. The amino acid identity (AAI) and the average nucleotide identity (ANI) values suggest that strain IE-0392T is a novel member of the genus Tellurirhabdus. The results suggest that strain IE-0392T represents a novel species of the genus Tellurirhabdus, for which the name Tellurirhabdus bombi sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is IE-0392T (= GDMCC 1.2794T = JCM 35040T).

Cereibacter flavus sp. nov., a novel member of the family Rhodobacteraceae isolated from seawater of the South China Sea and reclassification of Rhodobacter alkalitolerans as Cereibacter alkalitolerans comb. nov

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, ovoid-shaped and yellow-coloured strain, designated SYSU M79828T, was isolated from seawater collected from the South China Sea. Growth of this strain was observed at 4-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-6% NaCl (optimum, 3.0 %, w/v). The respiratory quinone was found to be Q-10. Major fatty acid constituents were C18 : 1  ω7c/C18 : 1  ω6c, C18 : 1 ω7c11-methyl and C18 : 0 (>5 % of total). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified lipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that strain SYSU M79828T belonged to the genus Cereibacter and had the highest sequences similarity to 'Rhodobacter xinxiangensis' TJ48T (98.41 %). Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, physiological and chemotaxonomic characterizations, we consider that strain SYSU M79828T represents a novel species of the genus Cereibacter, for which the name Cereibacter flavus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU M79828T (=GDMCC 1.3803T=KCTC 92893T). In addition, according to the results of phylogenetic analysis and similar taxonomic characteristics, we propose that Rhodobacter alkalitolerans should be reclassified as Cereibacter alkalitolerans comb. nov.

Alteromonas salexigens sp. nov., isolated from coastal seawater

A Gram-negative, aerobic, short rod-shaped bacterium, designated ASW11-19T, was isolated from a coastal seawater sample of the Yellow Sea, PR China. Strain ASW11-19T grew optimally at 37 °C, 3.0-5.0% (w/v) NaCl and pH 7.5. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain ASW11-19T belonged to the genus Alteromonas and most closely related to Alteromonas profundi 345S023T and Alteromonas fortis 1T (98.4%, both). The draft genome was 3.55 Mb with 3150 protein-coding genes, 18 contigs, and a DNA G+C content was 44.4%. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values were below the species-delineating thresholds. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c), summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c/C18:1ω6c), and C16:0. The sole respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8. The polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phospholipid, and two unidentified lipids. Based on these genomic data, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic properties, strain ASW11-19T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Alteromonas. The name Alteromonas salexigens sp.nov. is proposed for ASW11-19T (=MCCC 1K07239T=KCTC 92247T).

Description of Flavimaribacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov., a New Member of the Family Rhizobiaceae Isolated from Marine Sediment

A novel Gram-staining-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacterium, designated WL0058T, was isolated from coastal sediment sample collected in Nantong city, Jiangsu province of China (120° 51' 13″ E, 32° 6' 26″ N) in October 2020. Strain WL0058T was found to grow at 4-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) with 1.5-4.0% NaCl (optimum, 4.0%) and displayed alkaliphilic growth with the pH range of pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 6.0). Phylogenetic trees constructed based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain WL0058T is a member of the family Rhizobiaceae, shared the highest similarity with "Hoeflea prorocentri" CCTCC AB 2016294T (97.7%) and constituted a sub-cluster within the family with it, while the similarity with others in the family Rhizobiaceae was lower than 97.0%. The G + C content of genomic DNA was 59.5 mol%. Polar lipids profile of strain WL0058T included phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and glycolipid (GL), phosphatidylmonomethylethanolamine (PME) and two unidentified polar lipids (L). The major isoprenoid quinone was determined to be Q-10 and the major fatty acids were C16:0, C18:0, summed features 4 (iso-C17:1 and/or anteiso-C17:1), and summed features 8 (C18:1ω6c and/or C18:1ω7c). As inferred from the morphology, physiology, and biochemical analysis, genotypic characteristics, and the phylogenetic trees, strain WL0058T ought to be recognized as a novel genus in the family Rhizobiaceae, for which the name Flavimaribacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Flavimaribacter sediminis gen. nov., sp. nov. is WL0058T (= MCCC 1K06063T = JCM 34659T = GDMCC 1.2448T).

Rubellimicrobium arenae sp. nov., isolated from desert soil

Two Gram-stain-negative strains, designated as SYSU D00286^T and SYSU D00782, were isolated from a sand sample collected from the Kumtag Desert in Xinjiang, north-west China. Cells were aerobic, non-motile and positive for both oxidase and catalase. Growth occurred at 4-37 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), pH 6.0-7.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and NaCl concentration of 0-1.5 % (w/v; optimum, 0%). Growth was observed on Reasoner's 2A agar and nutrient agar, but not on Luria-Bertani agar and trypticase soy agar. The polar lipids were identified as diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified aminolipids, one unidentified glycolipid and two unidentified phospholipids. The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10 and the major fatty acids (>10 %) were C_16 : 0 and summed feature 8 (C_18 : 1  ω7c and/or C_18 : 1  ω6c). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strains SYSU D00286^T and SYSU D00782 was 100%, and their average nucleotide identity (ANI), average amino acid identity and (AAI) digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values were all 100.0 %. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that these two strains belong to the same species of the genus Rubellimicrobium and show the highest sequence similarity to Rubellimicrobium rubrum KCTC 72461^T (98.2 %) and Rubellimicrobium roseum CCTCC AA 208029^T (97.5 %). The ANI, AAI and dDDH values between SYSU D00286^T (as well as SYSU D00782) and the other five Rubellimicrobium type strains were all less than or equal to 83.2, 80.1 and 23.6 %, respectively. Based on their phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomical features, strains SYSU D00286^T and SYSU D00782 represent a novel species of the genus Rubellimicrobium, for which the name Rubellimicrobium arenae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU D00286^T (=MCCC 1K04981^T=CGMCC 1.8626^T=KCTC 82271^T).

Alkalihalobacillus deserti sp. nov., Isolated from the Saline-Alkaline Soil

A bacterial strain, designated TRPH29^T, was isolated from saline-alkaline soil, collected from the southern edge of the Gurbantunggut desert, Xinjiang, People's Republic of China. The isolate was Gram-staining positive, facultatively anaerobic, straight rods. Growth occurred at 15-40 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 8.0-13.0 (optimum, 10.0), and in the presence of 0-15% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2%). Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain TRPH29^T showed the highest sequence similarities to Alkalihalobacillus krulwichiae (98.31%), Alkalihalobacillus wakoensis (98.04%), and Alkalihalobacillus akibai (97.69%). Average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain TRPH29^T and Alkalihalobacillus krulwichiae, Alkalihalobacillus wakoensis, Alkalihalobacillus akibai were in the range of 73.62-75.52% and 15.0-21.20%, respectively. Results of genome analyses indicated that the genome size of strain TRPH29^T was 5.05 Mb, with a genomic DNA G + C content of 37.30%. Analysis of the cellular component of strain TRPH29^T revealed that the primary fatty acids were anteiso-C_15:0 and iso-C_15:0, and the polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, an unidentified glycolipid, and an unidentified phospholipid. The predominant respiratory quinone was MK-7. Based on the genomic, phylogenetic, phenotypic and chemotaxonomic analyses, strain TRPH29^T represents a novel species of the genus Alkalihalobacillus, for which the name Alkalihalobacillus deserti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TRPH29^T (= CGMCC 1.19067^T = NBRC 115475^T).

Isolation and genomics of ten novel Shewanella species from mangrove wetland

Mangrove bacteria largely compose the microbial community of the coastal ecosystem and are directly associated with nutrient cycling. In the present study, 12 Gram-negative and motile strains were isolated from a mangrove wetland in Zhangzhou, China. Pairwise comparisons (based on 16S rRNA gene sequences) and phylogenetic analysis indicated that these 12 strains belong to the genus Shewanella. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities among the 12 Shewanella strains and their related type strains ranged from 98.8 to 99.8 %, but they still could not be considered as known species. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between the 12 strains and their related type strains were below the cut-off values (ANI 95-96% and dDDH 70 %) for prokaryotic species delineation. The DNA G+C contents of the present study strains ranged from 44.4 to 53.8 %. The predominant menaquinone present in all strains was MK-7. The present study strains (except FJAT-53532^T) also contained ubiquinones (Q-8 and Q-7). The polar lipid phosphatidylglycerol and fatty acid iso-C_15 : 0 was noticed in all strains. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic comparisons, we propose that these 12 strains represent 10 novel species within the genus Shewanella, with the names Shewanella psychrotolerans sp. nov. (FJAT-53749^T=GDMCC 1.2398^T=KCTC 82649^T), Shewanella zhangzhouensis sp. nov. (FJAT-52072^T=MCCC 1K05363^T=KCTC 82447^T), Shewanella rhizosphaerae sp. nov. (FJAT-53764^T=GDMCC 1.2349^T=KCTC 82648^T), Shewanella mesophila sp. nov. (FJAT-53870^T=GDMCC 1.2346^T= KCTC 82640^T), Shewanella halotolerans sp. nov. (FJAT-53555^T=GDMCC 1.2344^T=KCTC 82645^T), Shewanella aegiceratis sp. nov. (FJAT-53532^T=GDMCC 1.2343^T=KCTC 82644^T), Shewanella alkalitolerans sp. nov. (FJAT-54031^T=GDMCC 1.2347^T=KCTC 82642^T), Shewanella spartinae sp. nov. (FJAT-53681^T=GDMCC 1.2345^T=KCTC 82641^T), Shewanella acanthi sp. nov. (FJAT-51860^T=GDMCC 1.2342^T=KCTC 82650^T) and Shewanella mangrovisoli sp. nov. (FJAT-51754^T=GDMCC 1.2341^T= KCTC 82647^T).

Isoptericola croceus sp. nov., a novel actinobacterium isolated from saline-alkali soil

A novel actinomycete, designated strain q2^T, was isolated from the saline-alkaline soil, collected from Daqing, Heilongjiang province, China. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain q2^T belongs to the genus Isoptericola, and showed the highest sequence similarity to Isoptericola halotolerans KCTC 19046^T (98.48%) and Isoptericola chiayiensis KCTC 19740^T (98.13%), respectively. The average nucleotide identity values between strain q2^T and other members of the genus Isoptericola were lower than 95% recommended for distinguishing novel prokaryotic species. Cells of strain q2^T were Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped and non-spore-forming. Colonies of strain q2^T were golden-yellow pigmented, tidy edged and smooth surfaced. Growth occurred at 15-37 °C (optimum, 29 °C), pH 7.0-10.0 (optimum, pH 8.0). The predominant respiratory quinones were MK-9(H₄) and MK-9(H₂). The main detected polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylinositol mannoside. The peptidoglycan compositions were L-alanine, D-aspartic, L-glutamic acid and L-lysine (type A4α). The major cellular fatty acids (> 10%) were anteiso-C_15:0, iso-C_15:0, and anteiso-C_17:0. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was determined to be 69.7%. Based on the phenotypic, physiological, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain q2^T represents a novel species of the genus Isoptericola, for which the name Isoptericola croceus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is q2^T (= GDMCC 1.2923^T = KCTC 49759^T).

Chitinolyticbacter albus sp. Nov., A Novel Chitin-Degrading Bacterium Isolated from Ancient Wood Rhizosphere Soil

In this study, a novel aerobic mesophilic bacterial strain with capable of degrading chitin, designated YIM B06366^T, was isolated and classified. The rod-shaped, Gram-stain-negative, on-spore-forming bacterium originated from rhizosphere soil sample collected in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, southwest PR China. Strain YIM B06366^T exhibited growth at temperatures between 20 and 35 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 6.0). The analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity revealed that strain YIM B06366^T was most closely related to type strain Chitinolyticbacter meiyuanensis SYBC-H1^T (98.9%). Phylogenetic analysis based on genome data indicated that strain YIM B06366^T should be assigned to the genus Chitinolyticbacter. The Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA Hybridization (dDDH) values between strain YIM B06366^T and the reference strain Chitinolyticbacter meiyuanensis SYBC-H1^T were 84.4% and 27.7%, respectively. The major fatty acids included Summed Feature 3 (C_16:1 ω6c/C_16:1 ω7c), Summed Feature 8 (C_18:1 ω6c/C_18:1 ω7c), and C_16:0. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, aminophospholipids, and two unidentified phospholipids. The predominant menaquinone was Q-8, and the genomic DNA G + C content was 64.1%. Considering the polyphasic taxonomic evidence, strain YIM B06366^T is proposed as a novel species within the genus Chitinolyticbacter, named Chitinolyticbacter albus sp. nov. (type strain YIM B06366^T = KCTC 92434^T = CCTCC AB 2022163^T).

Streptomyces telluris sp. nov., a promising terrestrial actinobacterium with antioxidative potentials

An actinomycete strain, AA8^T, which produced a long straight chain of spores (verticillati type), was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Mangifera indica in Bangkok, Thailand. A polyphasic taxonomic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic position of the strain. Strain AA8^T formed a tight taxonomic position in the 16S rRNA gene tree with Streptomyces roseifaciens MBT76^T. In contrast, the genome-based taxonomic analysis showed that strain AA8^T shared low average nucleotide identity-BLAST (94.1%), the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (58.2%), and the average amino acid identity (93.6%) values with S. roseifaciens MBT76^T. Moreover, a combination of physiological and biochemical properties indicated that strain AA8^T was distinguished from all Streptomyces species with effectively published names. Strain AA8^T, therefore, represents a novel species of Streptomyces, and the name Streptomyces telluris is proposed for the strain. The type strain is AA8^T (= TBRC 8483^T = NBRC 113461^T). The chemical investigation led to the isolation of nine known compounds (compounds 1-9). Among these compounds, compound 7 (3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde) possesses strong antioxidant activity equal to ascorbic acid, a powerful antioxidative agent.

Micromonospora solifontis sp. nov., an actinobacterium isolated from hot spring soil

An actinobacterium strain, PPF5-17^T, was isolated from hot spring soil collected from Chiang Rai province, Thailand. The strain exhibited morphological and chemotaxonomic properties similar to those of members of the genus Micromonospora. Colonies of PPF5-17^T were strong pinkish red and turned black after sporulation in ISP 2 agar medium. Cells formed single spores directly on the substrate mycelium. Growth was observed from 15 to 45 °C and at pH 5-8. Maximum NaCl concentration for growth was 3 % (w/v). PPF5-17^T was found to have meso-diaminopimelic acid, xylose, mannose and glucose in the whole-cell hydrolysate. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositolmannosides were observed as the membrane phospholipids. MK-10(H₆), MK-9(H₆), MK-10(H₄) and MK-9(H₄) were the major menaquinones. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C_15 : 0, iso-C_17 : 0, anteiso-C_17 : 0 and iso-C_16 : 0. PPF5-17^T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Micromonospora fluminis LMG 30467^T (99.3 %). A genome-based taxonomic study revealed that PPF5-17^T was closely related to Micromonospora aurantinigra DSM 44815^T in the phylogenomic tree with an average nucleotide identity by blast (ANIb) of 87.7 % and a digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value of, 36.1 % which were below the threshold values for delineation of a novel species. Moreover, PPF5-17^T could be distinguished from its closest neighbours, M. fluminis LMG 30467^T and M. aurantinigra DSM 44815^T, with respect to a broad range of phenotypic properties. Thus, PPF5-17^T represents a novel species, for which the name Micromonospora solifontis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is PPF5-17^T (= TBRC 8478^T = NBRC 113441^T).

Lederbergia citrea sp. nov., isolated from citrus rhizosphere

Three Gram-positive-staining strains FJAT-49754^T, FJAT-49682 and FJAT-49731 were isolated from the citrus rhizosphere soil sample. These strains showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the type strain of Lederbergia panacisoli (97.8-97.9 %). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities between strains FJAT-49754^T, FJAT-49682, and FJAT-49731 were 99.9 %. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strains FJAT-49754^T, FJAT-49682 and FJAT-49731 were above 96 %, while the ANI values with the members of the genus Lederbergia were below 95 %, which were below the cut-off level for prokaryotic species delineation. The above results suggest that strains FJAT-49754^T, FJAT-49682 and FJAT-49731 belong to a novel species of the genus Lederbergia. Growth of strain FJAT-49754^T was observed at 10-40 °C (optimum at 30 °C, pH 6.0-10.0 (optimum at pH 8.0), and NaCl tolerance up to 7 % (w/v) (optimum at 1 %). MK-7 was the only menaquinone detected in strain FJAT-49754^T, and the main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. The major fatty acids of strain FJAT-49754^T were anteiso-C_15 : 0, iso-C_15 : 0, and C_16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain FJAT-49754^T was 38.7 %. Based on the above results, strain FJAT-49754^T represents a novel species of the genus Lederbergia, for which the name Lederbergia citrea sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-49754^T (=CCTCC AB 2019211^T=LMG 31589^T).

Shewanella subflava sp. nov., a novel multi-resistant bacterium, isolated from the estuary of the Fenhe River into the Yellow River

A aerobic, gram-negative, rod-shaped and polar-flagellum bacterial strain, designated as FYR11-62^T, was isolated from the estuary of the Fenhe River into the Yellow River in Shanxi Province, China. The isolate was able to grow at 4-37 °C (optimum, 25 °C), pH 5.5-9.5 (optimum, pH 7.5) and in the presence of 0-7.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 1.0% NaCl). Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes and 1597 single-copy orthologous clusters indicated that strain FYR11-62^T affiliated with the genus Shewanella and shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Shewanella aestuarii SC18^T (98.3%) and Shewanella gaetbuli TF-27^T (97.3%), respectively. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C_16:1 ω7c and/or C_16:1 ω6c), C_16:0 and iso-C_15:0. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The main quinones were Q-7 and Q-8. The genomic DNA G + C content was 41.6%. Gene annotation showed that strain FYR11-62^T possessed 30 antibiotic resistance genes, implying its multiple antidrug resistance. The average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain FYR11-62^T and its closely related species were all below the thresholds for species delineation. The phylogenetic position together with the results of the analysis of morphological, physiological and genomic features support the classification of strain FYR11-62^T (= MCCC 1K07242^T = KCTC 92244^T) as a novel species of the genus Shewanella, for which the name Shewanella subflava sp. nov. is proposed.

Streptomyces salinarius sp. nov., an actinomycete isolated from solar saltern soil

An actinobacterium, designated strain SS06011^T, was isolated from solar saltern soil collected from Samut Sakhon province, Thailand. The taxonomic position of this strain was established using the polyphasic taxonomic approach. The strain produced grey aerial spore mass on International Streptomyces Project 2 seawater agar that differentiated into spiral spore chains with rugose-surfaced spores. Strain SS06011^T was found to have ll-diaminopimelic acid in the cell peptidoglycan. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained galactose, glucose and ribose. MK-9(H₆) and MK-9(H₄) were major menaquinones. The major cellular fatty acids comprised iso-C_16 : 0, anteiso-C_15 : 0 and anteiso-C_17 : 0. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol were detected in cells. These characteristics were coincident with the typical morphological and chemotaxonomic properties of the genus Streptomyces. The taxonomic affiliation at the genus level of this strain could also be confirmed by its 16S rRNA gene sequence data. Strain SS06011^T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Streptomyces ardesiacus NRRL B-1773^T (99.1 %), Streptomyces coelicoflavus NBRC 15399^T (99.1 %) and Streptomyces hyderabadensis OU-40^T (99.1 %). Digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), average nucleotide identity-blast (ANIb) and average amino acid identity (AAI) values between strain SS06011^T and its closely related type strains, S. ardesiacus NBRC 15402^T, S. coelicoflavus NBRC 15399^T and S. hyderabadensis JCM 17657^T, were in the range of 45.4-48.4 % (for dDDH), 90.8-91.9 % (for ANIb) and 90.8-91.7 % (for AAI), respectively, which are lower than the cut-off criteria for species delineation. The DNA G+C content of genomic DNA was 71.9 mol%. With the differences in physiological, biochemical and genotypic data, strain SS06011^T could be discriminated from its closest neighbours. Thus, strain SS06011^T should be recognized as representing a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces salinarius sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SS06011^T (=TBRC 9951^T=NBRC 113998^T).

Ectobacillus ponti sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from Pearl River Estuary

A Gram-staining-positive, aerobic, motile, and rod-shaped strain, designated SYSU M60031^T, was isolated from a Pearl River Estuary sediment sample, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The isolate could grow at pH 5.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 25-37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0 %). The predominant respiratory menaquinone of SYSU M60031^T was MK-7. The cellular polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminophospholipid, and one unidentified aminolipid. The major fatty acids (>10 % of total) were iso-C_14 : 0, iso-C_15 : 0, anteiso-C_15 : 0, iso-C_16 : 0, and C_16 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 51.2 %. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that strain SYSU M60031^T belonged to the genus Ectobacillus and showed the highest sequence similarity to Ectobacillus funiculus NAF001^T (96.16%), followed by Ectobacillus antri SYSU K30001^T (95.08 %). Based on the phenotypic, genotypic, and phylogenetic data, strain SYSU M60031^T should be considered to represent a novel species of the genus Ectobacillus, for which the name Ectobacillus ponti sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel isolate is SYSU M60031^T (=CGMCC 1.19243^T =NBRC 115614^T).

New insights into the neuroprotective and beta-secretase1 inhibitor profiles of tirandamycin B isolated from a newly found Streptomyces composti sp. nov

Tirandamycin (TAM B) is a tetramic acid antibiotic discovered to be active on a screen designed to find compounds with neuroprotective activity. The producing strain, SBST2-5^T, is an actinobacterium that was isolated from wastewater treatment bio-sludge compost collected from Suphanburi province, Thailand. Taxonomic characterization based on a polyphasic approach indicates that strain SBST2-5^T is a member of the genus Streptomyces and shows low average nucleotide identity (ANI) (81.7%), average amino-acid identity (AAI) (78.5%), and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) (25.9%) values to its closest relative, Streptomyces thermoviolaceus NBRC 13905^T, values that are significantly below the suggested cut-off values for the species delineation, indicating that strain SBST2-5^T could be considered to represent a novel species of the genus Streptomyces. The analysis of secondary metabolites biosynthetic gene clusters (smBGCs) in its genome and chemical investigation led to the isolation of TAM B. Interestingly, TAM B at 20 µg/mL displayed a suppressive effect on beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) with 68.69 ± 8.84% inhibition. Molecular docking simulation reveals the interaction mechanism between TAM B and BACE1 that TAM B was buried in the pocket of BACE-1 by interacting with amino acids Thr231, Asp 228, Gln73, Lys 107 via hydrogen bond and Leu30, Tyr71, Phe108, Ile118 via hydrophobic interaction, indicating that TAM B represents a potential active BACE1 inhibitor. Moreover, TAM B can protect the neuron cells significantly (% neuron viability = 83.10 ± 9.83% and 112.72 ± 6.83%) from oxidative stress induced by serum deprivation and Aβ_1-42 administration models at 1 ng/mL, respectively, without neurotoxicity on murine P19-derived neuron cells nor cytotoxicity against Vero cells. This study was reportedly the first study to show the neuroprotective and BACE1 inhibitory activities of TAM B.

Shouchella tritolerans sp. nov., a facultative anaerobic bacterium isolated from marine sediments

An alkali, salt, and thermo-tolerant strain designated FJAT-45399^T was isolated from marine sediment in Fujian Province, China. Strain FJAT-45399^T was Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped, and facultatively aerobic. It shared high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with the members of the genus Shouchella. Further, the phylogenetic and phylogenomic analysis also suggested strain FJAT-45399^T clustered with the members of the genus Shouchella. Growth of strain FJAT-45399^T was observed at 15-55 °C (optimum 45-50 °C), pH 7.0-13.0 (optimum 9.0) and 0-15% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 2%). It contained MK-7 as the menaquinone. The polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and an unidentified glycolipid (UGL) and lipid (UL). The major fatty acids (> 10%) were C_16:0 (22.8%), iso-C_15:0 (21.3%), and anteiso-C_15:0 (14.0%). The genomic DNA G + C content was 44.5%. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain FJAT-45399^T and the most closely related type strain Shouchella clausii DSM 8716^T (ANI 94.1% and dDDH 55.4%) were both below the cut-off level for species delineation. Based on the above results, strain FJAT-45399^T represents a novel species of the genus Shouchella, for which the name Shouchella tritolerans sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-45399^T (= GDMCC 1.3098^T = JCM 35613^T).

Micromonospora thermarum sp. nov., an actinobacterium isolated from hot spring soil

An actinomycete, designated strain HSS6-12^T, was isolated from hot spring sediment collected from Ranong province, Thailand. The strain showed taxonomic characteristics consistent with those of members of the genus Micromonospora. HSS6-12^T produced a single spore directly on the substrate mycelium, and no aerial mycelium was detected. The isomer of diamino acid presented in cell wall peptidoglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Arabinose, xylose, glucose, and ribose were detected in whole-cell hydrolysates. MK-10(H₄), MK-9(H₄), and MK-10(H₆) were major menaquinones. Major cellular fatty acids were iso-C_16:0, iso-C_15:0, and iso-C_17:0. Phospholipid profile was composed of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, and phosphatidylinositolmannosides. 16S rRNA gene analysis revealed that HSS6-12^T shared the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with Micromonospora inositola DSM 43819^T (99.3%). In contrast, the genome analysis showed that HSS6-12^T formed a tight taxonomic position in a phylogenomic tree with Micromonospora endolithica DSM 44398^T. Moreover, the average nucleotide identity-blast, the digital DNA-DNA hybridization, and the average amino acid identity values between HSS6-12^T and M. inositola DSM 43819^T and M. endolithica DSM 44398^T were 83.1-84.0%, 27.5-28.7%, and 80.4-82.2%, respectively, indicating that HSS6-12^T was different species with both closely related Micromonospora-type strains. In addition, HSS6-12^T could be discriminated from its closely related type strains by many physiological and biochemical characteristics. Thus, HSS6-12^T could be considered a novel species of the genus Micromonospora, and the name Micromonospora thermarum is proposed for the strain. The type strain is HSS6-12^T (= BCC 41915^T = JCM 17127^T).

Salinibacterium sedimenticola sp. nov., Isolated from Tidal Flat Sediment

An actinobacterium, designated as SYSU T00001^T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment sample from Guangdong province, China. Cells were Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, motile and short rod-shaped. Colonies on marine agar 2216 were smooth, yellow-pigmented, and circular with low convexity. The isolate was able to grow at the temperature range 4-37 °C (optimum 30 °C), at pH 4.0-10.0 (optimum 7.0) and in the presence of 0-10% (w/v) NaCl. The major menaquinones were MK-11 and MK-10. The cell wall contained alanine, glutamic acid, lysine and ornithine. The major fatty acids were C_19:0 cyclo ω8c (35.7%) and anteiso C_15:0 (26.0%). The polar lipids consisted of one diphosphatidyl glycerol, one unidentified glycolipid and one unknown lipid. Whole genome sequencing of strain SYSU T00001^T revealed 2,837,702 bp with a DNA G + C content of 67.8%. Phylogenetic analyses clearly demonstrated that strain SYSU T00001^T belonged to the genus Salinibacterium, and the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to Salinibacterium hongtaonis 194^T (97.8%). The ANI and dDDH values of strain SYSU T00001^T relative to Salinibacterium hongtaonis 194^T were 74.5% and 19.5%, respectively. According to our data, strain SYSU T00001^T represents a novel species of the genus Salinibacterium, for which the name Salinibacterium sedimenticola sp. nov. is proposed, the type strain is SYSU T00001^T (= GDMCC 1.3283^T = KCTC 49758^T).

Cytobacillus citreus sp. nov., isolated from citrus rhizosphere soil

A Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and motile strain, designated FJAT-49705^T, was isolated from the citrus rhizosphere soil sample. Strain FJAT-49705^T grew at 20-40 °C (optimum, 30 °C) and pH 6.0-11.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) with 0-5 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2 %). Strain FJAT-49705^T showed high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to 'Bacillus dafuensis' FJAT-25496^T (99.7 %) and Cytobacillus solani FJAT-18043^T (98.0 %). In phylogenetic (based on 16S rRNA gene sequences) and phylogenomic trees (based on 71 bacterial single-copy genes), strain FJAT-49705^T clustered with the members of the genus Cytobacillus. MK-7 was the only isoprenoid quinone present. The main polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified phospholipid. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C_15 : 0 and iso-C_15 : 0. The genomic DNA G+C content was 36.9 %. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between FJAT-49705^T and 'B. dafuensis' FJAT-25496^T and C. solani FJAT-18043^T were below the cut-off level (95-96 %) recommended as the ANI criterion for interspecies identity. Based on the above results, strain FJAT-49705^T represents a novel species of the genus Cytobacillus, for which the name Cytobacillus citreus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-49705^T (=CCTCC AB 2019243^T= LMG 31580^T).

Paenibacillus alkalitolerans sp. nov., a bacterium isolated from a salt lake of Turpan City in Xinjiang Province, north-west China

A Gram stain-positive, rod-shaped, motile, aerobic and terminal endospore formation bacterium, designated YIM B00362^T, was isolated from saline soil samples collected from a salt lake in Xinjiang Province, north-west China. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences and whole genomes indicated that the isolate belongs to the genus Paenibacillus. However, the highest sequence similarity between strain YIM B00362^T and the relatives was only 94.4%. Moreover, the DNA-DNA relatedness and ANI values between the novel isolate and the relative type strain, Paenibacillus antri SYSU K30003^T was 13.6% and 70.3%, respectively. The major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C_15:0, C_16:0 and the major quinone was MK-7. The isolate contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and the major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglyceride, and two unidentified polar lipids. The genomic DNA G + C content was 50.9 mol%. The major whole-cell sugars contained glucose and galactose. On the basis of physiological, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic data, strain YIM B00362^T represents a novel species of genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus alkalitolerans sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM B00362^T (= KCTC 43272 ^T = CGMCC 1.18801 ^T = NBRC 114667 ^T).

Clostridium caldaquaticum sp. nov., a thermophilic bacterium isolated from a hot spring sediment

A novel anaerobic bacterium, designated SYSU GA19001^T, was isolated from a hot spring sediment sample. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate belongs to the genus Clostridium, and showed the highest sequence similarity to Clostridium swellfunianum CICC 10730^T (96.63 %) and Clostridium prolinivorans PYR-10^T (96.11 %). Cells of strain SYSU GA19001^T were Gram-stain-positive, spore-forming, rod-shaped (0.6-0.8×2.6-4.0 µm) and motile. Growth was observed at pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), 37-55 °C (optimum, 45 °C) and in NaCl concentrations of 0-2.0 % (optimum, 0 %). The genomic DNA G+C content was 31.62 %. The major cellular fatty acids of strain SYSU GA19001^T were C_14 : 0, iso-C_15 : 0, C_16 : 0 and summed feature 8. The prominent polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol. Meso-diaminopimelic acid was the diamino acid in peptidoglycan. Based on the results of phylogenetic, chemotaxonomic and phenotypic analyses, strain SYSU GA19001^T represents a novel species of the genus Clostridium, for which the name Clostridium caldaquaticum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel species is SYSU GA19001^T (=NBRC 115040^T= CGMCC 1.17864^T).

Paenibacillus rhizolycopersici sp. nov., an oligotrophic bacterium isolated from a tomato plant in China

A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, motile, endospore-forming strain, DXFW5^T, was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of tomato. Strain DXFW5^T grew at 20-50 °C (optimum, 25-37 °C), pH 5-8 (optimum, pH 7) and in the presence of 3 % NaCl. It was positive for catalase and oxidase. Phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences showed this strain was most closely related to Paenibacillus timonensis DSM 16943^T (98.0 %) and Paenibacillus barengoltzii DSM 22255^T (97.4 %). The DNA G+C content was 52.9 mol%. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain DXFW5^T and P. timonensis DSM 16943^T, P. barengoltzii DSM 22255^T and P. macerans DSM 24^T were 33.1, 24.9 and 21.2 %, respectively. The average nucleotide identity values between strain DXFW5^T and P. timonensis DSM 16943^T , P. barengoltzii DSM 22255^T and P. macerans DSM 24^T were 86.93, 81.77 and 75.98 %, respectively. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C_15 : 0 (55.1 %), iso-C_16 : 0 (13.2 %) and C_16 : 0 (10 %). The polar lipids of strain DXFW5^T consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine two unidentified phospholipids and three unidentified lipids. MK-7 was the major isoprenoid quinone. Based on these results, it was concluded that the isolate represents a novel species of the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name Paenibacillus rhizolycopersici sp. nov. is proposed, with DXFW5^T (=ACCC 61751^T=JCM 34488^T) as the type strain.

Bacillus litorisediminis sp. nov., a Thermophilic Bacterium Isolated from Mangrove Sediment

Two aerobic, Gram-staining-positive, rod-shaped, endospore-forming, thermophilic bacterial strains, designated FJAT-47801^T and FJAT-47835, were isolated from the sediment collected from Zhangjiang Estuary Mangrove National Nature Reserve in Fujian Province, China. Growth was observed at 25-55 °C (optimum, 50 °C) and pH 7.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), with up to 4.0% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, without NaCl). Strains FJAT-47801^T and FJAT-47835 showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Bacillus oleivorans (98.5%). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between FJAT-47801^T and FJAT-47835 was 99.9% indicating they were the same species. Phylogenetic (based on 16S rRNA gene sequences) and phylogenomic (based on 120 conserved bacterial single-copy genes) trees showed that strains FJAT-47801^T and FJAT-47835 should be affiliated to the genus Bacillus. The of menaquinone of strain FJAT-47801^T was MK-7. The major fatty acids of strain FJAT-47801^T were iso-C_15:0, anteiso-C_15:0, iso-C_17:0, and C_16:0. The major polar lipids strain FJAT-47801^T were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), diphosphatidylglycerol (DPG), and phosphatidylglycerol (PG). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain FJAT-47801^T was 39.3%. The average nucleotide identity (84.3%) and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization value (28.1%) between strain FJAT-47801^T and B. oleivorans CCTCC AB 2013353^T were below the cut-off level for species delineation. Based on the above results, strain FJAT-47801^T represents a novel species of the genus Bacillus, for which the name Bacillus litorisediminis sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is FJAT-47801^T (=GDMCC 1.2712^T = JCM 34875^T).

Characterizing corn-straw-degrading actinomycetes and evaluating application efficiency in straw-returning experiments

Corn straw is an abundant lignocellulose resource and by-product of agricultural production. With the continuous increase in agricultural development, the output of corn straw is also increasing significantly. However, the inappropriate disposal of straw results in wasting of resources, and also causes a serious ecological crisis. Screening microorganisms with the capacity to degrade straw and understanding their mechanism of action is an efficient approach to solve such problems. For this purpose, our research group isolated three actinomycete strains with efficient lignocellulose degradation ability from soil in the cold region of China: Streptomyces sp. G1^T, Streptomyces sp. G2^T and Streptomyces sp. G3^T. Their microbial properties and taxonomic status were assessed to improve our understanding of these strains. The three strains showed typical characteristics of the genus Streptomyces, and likely represent three different species. Genome functional annotation indicated that most of their genes were related to functions like carbohydrate transport and metabolism. In addition, a similar phenomenon also appeared in the COG and CAZyme analyses, with a large number of genes encoding carbohydrate-related hydrolases, such as cellulase, glycosidase and endoglucanase, which could effectively destroy the structure of lignocellulose in corn straw. This unambiguously demonstrated the potential of the three microorganisms to hydrolyze macromolecular polysaccharides at the molecular level. In addition, in the straw-returning test, the decomposing consortium composed of the three Streptomyces isolates (G123) effectively destroyed the recalcitrant bonds between the various components of straw, and significantly reduced the content of active components in corn straw. Furthermore, microbial diversity analysis indicated that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, reportedly associated with soil antibiotic resistance and antibiotic degradation, was significantly improved with straw returning at both tested time points. The microbial diversity of each treatment was also dramatically changed by supplementing with G123. Taken together, G123 has important biological potential and should be further studied, which will provide new insights and strategies for appropriate treatment of corn straw.

Caldovatus aquaticus sp. nov., a moderately thermophilic bacterium isolated from hot spring microbial mat

Two closely related, aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, motile, oval-shaped, non-endospore-forming, moderately thermophilic bacteria, designated strains SYSU G05006^T and SYSU G05005, were isolated from a bioreactor enrichment and the original sample was collected from Rehai National Park, Tengchong, Yunnan Province, PR China. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these two strains were closely related to Caldovatus sediminis YIM 72346^T (96.75 and 96.89 % sequence similarity, respectively). The whole genome size of strain SYSU G05006^T was 3.87 Mbp with a DNA G+C content of 75.33 mol%. The average nucleotide identity (ANI based on the MUMmer algorithm≤90.31 % and ANI based on blast≤89.36 %) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (≤35.10 %) values between strain SYSU G05006^T and other members of the family Acetobacteraceae were all lower than the threshold values recommended for distinguishing novel prokaryotic species. Optimal growth of the strain was observed at 55 °C and pH 6.0. Ubiquinone-10 was the predominant respiratory lipoquinone. The major cellular fatty acids included iso-C_{14 : 0}, C_{16 : 1} ω5c, summed feature 5 and summed feature 7. The major polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, one unidentified aminolipid, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, two unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified lipids. Based on results of phylogenetic analyses, comparative genomics and phenotypic characteristics, we describe a new species of the genus Caldovatus represented by strain SYSU G05006^T (=KCTC 82831^T=MCCC 1K06125^T), for which we propose the name Caldovatus aquaticus sp. nov.

Streptomyces acidipaludis sp. nov., an actinobacterium isolated from peat swamp forest soil

An actinobacterium strain PLK6-54^T was isolated from Lankwai peat swamp forest soil collected from Yala province, Thailand. Strain PLK6-54^T exhibited morphological and chemotaxonomic properties described for the genus Streptomyces. It formed a spiral spore chain directly on aerial mycelium. Growth was observed between 20 and 40 °C and at pH 5-8. The maximum NaCl for growth was 2 % (w/v). ll-Diaminopimelic acid, arabinose and ribose were detected in the whole-cell hydrolysate. Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositolmannoside were detected as the phospholipids. The major menaquinones were MK-10(H₂) and MK-9(H₆). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C_16 : 0, anteiso-C_15 : 0 and iso-C_14 : 0. 16S rRNA gene sequence data supported the assignment of strain PLK6-54^T to the genus Streptomyces and showed that Streptomyces rubidus NBRC 102073^T (99.0 %) was the closest relative. Moreover, the average nucleotide identity-blast (85.5 %) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (30.7 %) values reported between strain PLK6-54^T and its closest neighbour were below the threshold values for delineation of a novel species. Strain PLK6-54^T could be distinguished from related validly described Streptomyces species by several phenotypic properties. The combination of genotypic and phenotypic data indicated that strain PLK6-54^T is representative of a novel species of the genus Streptomyces. The name Streptomyces acidipaludis sp. nov. is proposed for strain PLK6-54^T. The type strain is PLK6-54^T (=TBRC 11250^T=NBRC 114297^T).

Gramella sediminis sp. nov., isolated from a tidal flat of the Yellow Sea

A novel species of the genus Gramella , designated ASW11-100T, was isolated from a tidal flat sediment in the Yellow Sea, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and single-copy orthologous clusters revealed that strain ASW11-100T belonged to the genus Gramella , and exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities of 98.9, 98.8 and 98.7 % to Gramella sabulilitoris HSMS-1T, Gramella sediminilitoris GHTF-27T and Gramella forsetii KT0803T, respectively. The genome of strain ASW11-100T harbours 2950 protein-coding genes and 105 carbohydrate-active enzymes including 38 glycoside hydrolases. Seventeen of the glycoside hydrolases are organized in five distinct polysaccharide utilization loci, which are predicted to involve in the degradation of starch, glucans, arabinoxylans, arabinomannan, arabinans and arabinogalactans. The genomic DNA G+C content was 37.3 mol%. The digital DNA–DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity values between strain ASW11-100T and its closely related relatives were in ranges of 19.8–23.9% and 76.6–80.9 %, respectively. Cells of the isolate were Gram-negative, aerobic, non-flagellated and short rod-shaped. Carotenoid pigments were produced, but flexirubin-type pigments were absent. The major fatty acids (>10 %) were iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω6c and/or C16 : 1  ω7c). The sole respiratory quinone was menaquinone-6 and the major polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine. Based on the above polyphasic evidence, strain ASW11-100T should be considered to represent a novel Gramella species, for which the name Gramella sediminis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is ASW11-100T (=KCTC 82502T=MCCC 1K05580T).

Pseudalkalibacillus salsuginis sp. nov., a novel salt-tolerant bacterium isolated from a saline lake sediment

A salt-tolerant bacterium, designated strain EGI L200015T, was isolated from saline lake sediment in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, PR China. The taxonomic position of the isolate was determined using polyphasic taxonomic analysis and phylogenomic analysis. Phylogenetic analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities indicated that EGI L200015T formed a distinct clade with Pseudalkalibacillus berkeleyi KCTC 12718T with sequence identity of 98.3%. The novel isolate could be distinguished from species of the genus Pseudalkalibacillus by its distinct phenotypic, physiological and genotypic characteristics. Cells of EGI L200015T were aerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and rod-shaped. Optimal growth conditions for EGI L200015T occurred on marine agar 2216 at pH 8.0 at 30 °C. The major respiratory quinone was MK-7, while the major fatty acids (> 10 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The detected polar lipids of included diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylethanolamine. On the basis of the genome sequence data, the DNA G+C content of EGI L200015T was 41.6 %. On the basis of the phenotypic, physiological, genotypic and phylogenetic data, strain EGI L200015T represents a novel species of the genus Pseudalkalibacillus , for which the name Pseudalkalibacillus salsuginis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the proposed novel isolate is EGI L200015T (= KCTC 43363T = CGMCC 1.19260T).

Gordonia zhenghanii sp. nov. and Gordonia liuliyuniae sp. nov., isolated from bat faeces

Four mesophilic actinobacteria (HY002T, HY442, HY366T and HY285) isolated from the faeces of bats collected in southern China were found to be strictly aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, oxidase-negative, Gram-stain-positive and catalase-positive. Strains HY002T and HY366T contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid and MK-9(H2) the sole respiratory quinone. Arabinose, galactose and ribose were detected in the whole-cell hydrolysates of both type strains. The main cellular fatty acids (> 10.0%) of all strains were C16 : 0, C18 : 1  ω9c, 10-methyl-C18 : 0 and summed feature 3. Strains HY002T and HY366T contained diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidyl inositol mannosides as the major polar lipids. The phylogenetic/phylogenomic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and genomic sequence comparison revealed that the four strains belong to the genus Gordonia , most closely related to G. neofelifaecis NRRL B-59395T(98.2–98.3% sequence similarity) on the EzBioCloud database. The G+C contents of strains HY002T and HY366T based on genomic DNA were 66.5 and 66.9%, respectively. The DNA–DNA relatedness values between the two types strains and members of the genus Gordonia were far below 70 % (18.6–23.1 %). All genotypic and phenotypic data indicated that the four strains are representatives of two novel separate species, for which the names Gordonia zhenghanii sp. nov. and Gordonia liuliyuniae sp. nov. are proposed, with HY002T (=CGMCC 4 7757T=JCM 34 878T) and HY366T (=CGMCC 1 19146T=JCM 34 879T) as the respective type strains.
