A quantitative study on preprandial insemination in the Karoo paralysis tick Ixodes rubicundus (Acari: Ixodidae)

The influence of preprandial insemination on feeding and oviposition of Ixodes persulcatus females (Acari: Ixodidae) and some thoughts concerning mating strategies in ticks of the genus Ixodes

Prostriate ticks (subfamily Ixodinae, genus Ixodes) can copulate and the females can be inseminated before attachment to the host. In tests with Ixodes persulcatus females collected in the field and fed without males on the host, it was shown that this preprandial insemination is necessary and sufficient for successful engorgement and oviposition if female feeding took place in up to 1 month after collection. A 2-month period between preprandial insemination and female feeding was followed by a significant decrease in the proportion of normally engorged females and significant increase in egg mortality. If a small number of males were added to feeding females in this case, the number of normally engorged females increased but the egg mortality remained as high. Spermatophore destruction during the 2-month period is assumed to have a negative effect on the viability of eggs produced after additional (perprandial) insemination. Prostriate ticks are believed to be an intermediate group between argasid and metastriate ticks. Transition from nidicolous parasitism in argasid ticks to exophily (pasture parasitism) in metastriate ticks determines the change in mating strategy from off-host to on-host copulation. We review the available data concerning mating strategies in representatives of different subgenera of the genus Ixodes in the context of this evolutionary relationship.

Mating strategies and spermiogenesis in ixodid ticks

Mate-seeking and sperm-transfer in the ixodid hard ticks, which include important vectors of zoonotic pathogens, generally reflect their peculiarly prolonged pattern of feeding. The metastriate ticks, including Dermacentor, Amblyomma, and Rhipicephalus, invariably attain sexual maturity and mate solely on their hosts. The more primitive prostriate Ixodes ticks, however, may copulate both in the absence of hosts and while the female engorges. These expanded opportunities for insemination complicate the mating systems of the Ixodes ricinus complex of species. In these ticks, autogenous spermatogenesis must precede host contact, whereas anautogenous oogenesis requires that the females store sperm. All hard tick males undergo a courting ritual before they can deposit their spermatophores within the female's genital tract. These diverse and prolonged patterns of sexual interaction provide opportunities for interactions between populations and individuals that may be relevant to the role of ticks as vectors of zoonotic pathogens.

Status of Dorper sheep as hosts of ectoparasites

Seventeen ixodid tick species or subspecies have been collected from Dorper sheep in South Africa. The diseases transmitted or the conditions caused by these ticks in sheep are discussed. Although Dorper sheep may be infested with the scab mite, Psoroptes ovis, this does not seem to cause production losses. These sheep may, however, serve as a source of mite infestation for woolled sheep. The majority of Dorper sheep are infested with the larvae of the nasal bot fly, Oestrus ovis, they may also be subject to myiasis caused by the larvae of two calliphorid flies. In certain regions of the country Dorper sheep are prone to serious fly worry by female Simulium chutteri. Although Dorper sheep may be infested by various louse species these do not seem to reach large numbers or cause production losses.

Abiotic and biotic determinants of the seasonal dynamics of the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus in South Africa

The creation of a generic population model for the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus requires a detailed, quantified understanding of the interactions of these ticks with their biotic and abiotic environment in the different parts of their range, from the tropical regions of East Africa to the temperate regions of South Africa. The much greater seasonal variation in climatic conditions, particularly temperature, further from the equator introduces variable development rates and diapause into the life cycle. Estimates of natural temperature-dependent interstadial development periods, derived from a combination of published laboratory and field data, were applied to published data on the seasonal abundance of R.appendiculatus on three farms in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. This enabled an assessment of which ticks of one stage give rise to which ticks of the next stage, from which (a) the onset and duration of diapause in unfed adults, and (b) seasonal interstadial mortality indices in the form of k-values, could be estimated. The contribution of biotic (tick density) and abiotic (climatic) factors as predictors of mortality at each life stage was investigated by step-wise multiple regression. Density-independent mortality at the female-to-larval stage is correlated with geographically variable climatic factors, minimum temperature at two farms and minimum relative humidity at the third. The other two stages are governed by density-dependent mortality, which, it is argued, may be caused largely by the hosts' acquired resistance to ticks. As expected on theoretical grounds, this density dependence is weaker nearer to the edge of the tick's range and for the more vulnerable immature stages.

Sex ratio characteristics in Ixodes rubicundus (Acari:Ixodidae), the Karoo paralysis tick

The sex ratio is an important parameter which characterizes the state and dynamics of natural populations of animals. Although ixodid ticks are specialized ectoparasites, most species are bisexual and are characterized by a 1:1 sex ratio for their progeny. In natural populations and even in laboratory colonies, biased sex ratios are often observed. Ixodes rubicundus, the Karoo paralysis tick, parasitizes domestic stock and wild ungulates in South Africa. Adults quest from vegetation, can mate off or on the host and males are seldom parasitic. We hypothesized that the sex ratio for I. rubicundus would be 1:1 when observed directly in the progeny but that it would be strongly biased towards females in samples of parasitic adults. The results mostly supported the hypothesis but it was also shown that unexplained and unpredictable variations can occur. On hosts, females dominated strongly, except on adult angora goats where the sex ratio was biased in favour of the males. This disparity may be related to a greater retention of males in the coarse, curly hair of angora goats compared to the other hosts. Monthly variations in the sex ratios of the tick on hosts are believed to be related to the large fluctuations in sex ratios of questing ticks.
