Abstract
Introduction: Genetics' integration with society sparks a multifaceted exploration in medicine, ethics, and psychology. This survey probes parental perspectives on childhood genetic disorders, aiming to gauge their understanding, attitudes, and implications. It seeks to inform healthcare, counseling, and policy endeavors by uncovering gaps in knowledge and attitudes. Understanding the psychological impact and familial dynamics of genetic information underscores the need for tailored support services amidst rapid advancements in genetic technologies and their ethical complexities. Methodology: It is a cross-sectional survey that assesses parental genetic knowledge and attitudes towards childhood genetic disorders. Data is collected by both paper and electronic formats. Data is cleaned in Excel and analyzed in IBM SPSS 29. Results: Our study included 138 participants, predominantly female (71.7%), with mean age 36.01 years (SD = 8.7). Most were Saudi (81.2%), with university education (65.9%). Notably, 73.2% reported consanguineous marriages. Regarding knowledge, 73.2% demonstrated good understanding of genetic disorders of child. Moreover, 47.8% and 34.1% claimed 40%-60% and 34.1% knowledge levels, respectively. Doctors were the primary information source (79.7%). Participants expressed moderate impact of genetic disorders on their child's life (65.9%) and family dynamics (45.7%). Satisfaction with medical care was high (41.3% rated it as excellent). Challenges accessing healthcare were reported by 52.9%. Positive experiences with genetic disorders were reported by 62.3%, with male participants more likely to report positive experiences (B = 0.888, p = 0.041). Improvement areas included treatment availability (39.1%) and advanced medical tests (20.3%). Notably, informing relatives about the genetic disease significantly predicted positive attitudes (B = 1.006, p = 0.008). Overall, obtaining information from doctors significantly enhanced knowledge (B = 2.296, p = 0.024). Conclusion: Our study shows significant associations between parental knowledge, attitudes towards genetic disorders, and healthcare experiences. It underscores the importance of informed decision-making and targeted interventions to address challenges and improve outcomes in managing childhood genetic disorders.

Abstract
Surgically repaired esophageal atresia (EA) is associated with chronic esophageal and respiratory morbidity that require ongoing management. The care of chronically ill children can exert considerable stress on parents, thereby potentially affecting their mental well-being. In response to this, disease-specific support groups have emerged with the aim to bring together individuals facing similar challenges, facilitating the exchange of experiences within a nurturing environment, and providing essential emotional support. In the context of this international collaborative study, we investigated the role played by EA-specific support groups in promoting the emotional well-being of EA families. An anonymous online survey was distributed through a network comprising 12 international EA support groups affiliated with the Federation of Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula (EAT) during May and August of 2022. In the study, 96 parents from 23 different countries completed the survey. Fifty-six percent indicated a lack of interaction with other EA families during the initial diagnosis, with 91% expressing the belief that such contact would have been beneficial. Participants exhibited a unanimous recognition of the critical role played by disease-specific support groups in navigating the emotional journey associated with EA.Conclusion: The findings of this global survey align with existing literature, reaffirming the beneficial impact of disease-specific support groups tailored for EA patients and their families on their emotional well-being. These groups provide a valuable platform for the exchange of personal experiences and narratives, delivering advantages to both those who share their stories and those who receive this valuable information.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article outlines a scalable system developed by the All of Us Research Program's Genetic Counseling Resource to vet a large database of healthcare resources for supporting participants with health-related DNA results. MATERIALS AND METHODS After a literature review of established evaluation frameworks for health resources, we created SONAR, a 10-item framework and grading scale for health-related participant-facing resources. SONAR was used to review clinical resources that could be shared with participants during genetic counseling. RESULTS Application of SONAR shortened resource approval time from 7 days to 1 day. About 256 resources were approved and 8 rejected through SONAR review. Most approved resources were relevant to participants nationwide (60.0%). The most common resource types were related to support groups (20%), cancer care (30.6%), and general educational resources (12.4%). All of Us genetic counselors provided 1161 approved resources during 3005 (38.6%) consults, mainly to local genetic counselors (29.9%), support groups (21.9%), and educational resources (21.0%). DISCUSSION SONAR's systematic method simplifies resource vetting for healthcare providers, easing the burden of identifying and evaluating credible resources. Compiling these resources into a user-friendly database allows providers to share these resources efficiently, better equipping participants to complete follow up actions from health-related DNA results. CONCLUSION The All of Us Genetic Counseling Resource connects participants receiving health-related DNA results with relevant follow-up resources on a high-volume, national level. This has been made possible by the creation of a novel resource database and validation system.

Abstract
Background Ventricular echogenic foci are small structures within the hearts of some fetuses. These small areas result from increased echogenicity in the ventricles of fetuses located near the papillary muscles. An association between these foci and chromosomal abnormalities in fetuses has been reported. Considering that chromosomal abnormalities are a major cause of prenatal death, this study aimed to determine the value of fetal echogenic foci as markers for chromosomal abnormalities. Materials and methods Fetal echocardiography was performed by an experienced cardiologist on 149 pregnant women in the second trimester. Of these, 75 were reported to have positive echogenic foci, and 74 were reported to have no echogenic foci. Subsequently, the three chromosomal anomalies including trisomies 21, 18, and 13 were examined. The information of the individuals, including gestational age and echogenic foci, was recorded. Results Based on the findings of the present study, seven infants (4.7%) had trisomy 21, four infants (2.7%) had trisomy 13, and six infants (4.1%) had trisomy 18. The mean gestational age of pregnant women with positive and negative echogenic foci was 21.07±3.23 and 21.03±3.09, respectively. No significant relationship was found between ventricular echogenic foci and trisomy 21, 18, or 13. Conclusion The present study suggests no significant relation between the presence of echogenic foci and chromosomal trisomies. This finding indicates that additional tests are required to confirm chromosomal abnormalities when echogenic intracardiac foci are present, especially in high-risk fetuses. Moreover, the absence of echogenic focus does not rule out chromosomal disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with genetic conditions are at increased risk for mental health and neurodevelopmental problems, often accompanied by significant parental distress. Genetic and family factors can impact children and parents' mental health. Early parenting interventions, like the Incredible Years® programs, have demonstrated to improve parental distress and children's mental health. The recent version for young children with language delays or autism spectrum disorder (IY-ASLD®) has shown to be feasible and effective to support parents in their children's developmental trajectories. The effectiveness of treatments for children with genetic conditions and neurodevelopmental problems is largely unexplored, leaving significant gaps in evidence-based options. Clinicians lack guidance, especially when patients exhibit language or social communication impairments but do not meet diagnostic criteria for a full-blown autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We aim to fill this gap, providing evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of the IY-ASLD® intervention for such patients. METHODS We designed a prospective multicenter pragmatic randomized controlled trial including approximately 68 children aged 3 to 7 years, recruited from three tertiary care reference hospitals. Inclusion criteria will necessitate genetic confirmation of a neurodevelopmental disorder along with language, communication, or socialization difficulties. Individuals with an ASD diagnosis will be excluded. All subjects are included in a territorial register for rare conditions (ReMin, Registre de Malalties Minoritàries de Catalunya). Families will randomly be assigned to the intervention or the control group. The intervention will be held online by clinical psychologists and child and adolescent psychiatrists. DISCUSSION Our group has recently piloted the online implementation of the IY-ASLD® intervention for the first time in Spain, for parents of children with language delays, socialization difficulties, or ASD, but not genetically determined. Our multicenter research consortium is well-positioned to recruit patients with rare conditions and implement efficient treatment pathways within the National Health System. Given the geographical dispersion of families affected by rare conditions, the online format offers logistical advantages and improved therapy access, enhancing homogeneity across all patients. The results of this study will inform clinicians and policymakers about evidence-based treatment options for this vulnerable and overlooked group of young children. Abstract
In the Indiana University Health (IUH) Medical Genetics clinic, certified genetic counselors disclose genetic test results to patients by telephone. The wait-time between a result call-out and a follow-up appointment can vary from weeks to months depending on the medical geneticist's availability. Understanding the experiences that families face during these waiting periods can inform the field regarding what clinical improvements can be made to enhance patients' experiences. Our study explored three topics: the effects of wait-times on parents or patients between a result disclosure and medical genetics follow-up appointment, their anxiety levels during those wait-times, and suggestions for improving parents' and patients' experiences with genetics clinics. Patients or parents who were over 18 years old, who received an initial result call-out between May 2020 and September 2022 prior to a medical genetics follow-up appointment, and who had a diagnostic or a variant of uncertain significance (VUS) genetic test result were recruited for study participation. Individuals were surveyed on their diagnosis, wait-time following result disclosure, feelings during the wait-time, and preferences for result disclosures. The results showed that length of wait-time after a result call-out was not associated with increased anxiety; however, a background in genetics and support group involvement were associated with increased anxiety. The majority of respondents reported that if a genetic counseling-only appointment could occur closer to the time of results call-out, they would prefer to have a genetic counseling-only appointment with a second appointment for medical management with a geneticist later (58.1%). Based on these results, medical genetics clinics should consider implementing genetic counseling-only appointments to reduce wait-times for follow-up appointments.

Abstract
The decision for genetic testing in children is usually taken by their parents or caregivers, and may be influenced by sociocultural and ethical concerns. This study evaluateds the perspectives of Nigerian parents towards genetic testing of their children with genetic eye diseases parental willingness for genetic testing in their children, and its determinants, in a hospital setting in Nigeria. This cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted at the Eye clinic, University College Hospital, Ibadan. The participants were 42 parents of children with genetic eye diseases purposively recruited from April to July 2021. The main variables of interest were overall willingness to test, and willingness to test given ten different scenarios. Summary statistics were performed, and determinants of willingness to test (parental sociodemographic and children's clinical characteristics) were assessed using Fischer's exact test. All the participants expressed willingness to test when presented with six of the ten scenarios.However, slightly fewer (83-95%) proportions were willing to test for the other four scenarios (out-of-pocket payment, if test will reveal a systemic association, if test may confirm a diagnosis with no current treatment, and prenatal testing). Willingness to test was not significantly associated with the determinants tested. Thirty-nine (93%) would join a support group, 38 (91%) would inform a family member at risk, and 28 (67%) would be unwilling to have more children if there wais a risk to future offspring. This study demonstrated a high degree of parental willingness for genetic testing of their children. This is important evidence that can guide policy and planning of ophthalmic genetics services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sibling perspectives on the experiences of families caring for an autistic child are often overlooked in autism research. While qualitative research on these lived experiences has grown, it continues to primarily focus on parent reports. AIMS This study explored how having a sibling with autism impacts the non-autistic siblings within a family systems framework. The goal of the current study was to expand the literature by exploring the impacts of autism on the sibling subsystem as reported by the parents and the non-autistic siblings themselves. METHODS AND PROCEDURES The researchers interviewed 15 non-autistic siblings (aged 7-17) and 15 parents of children with autism to understand the experience of growing up with a sibling with autism. Content analysis was used to develop the interview protocol and analyze responses. Parent and non-autistic sibling reports of both siblings' effects on each other's development are triangulated with existing research. RESULTS Findings indicate novel emotional skill-building occurs in non-autistic siblings, as well as some unique risk factors for internalizing and externalizing problems if non-autistic siblings' needs become deprioritized. Family stress, external relationships, intrapersonal and social skill development, and other implications of this unique relationship are discussed.

Abstract
Improvements in technology used for genetic testing have yielded an increased numbers of variants that are identified, each with a potential to return uninformative results. While some genetics providers may expect patients to be responsible for staying abreast of updates to their genetic testing results, it is unknown whether patients are even aware of the possibility of variant reclassification. Little research has assessed the comprehension and attitudes of parents of pediatric patients regarding reclassification of variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with parents (n = 15) whose children received a VUS from genetic testing in either the pediatric neurogenetics or developmental pediatrics clinics at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana. Most participants expressed understanding of the uncertainty surrounding their child's VUS test result. However, nearly half of participants shared that they had no prior knowledge of its potential reclassification. When asked whose responsibility it is to keep informed about changes to their child's VUS status, some participants stated that it belonged solely to healthcare providers - a distinctive finding of our study - whereas others felt that it was a joint responsibility between providers and the parents. We additionally found that some patients desire a support group for individuals with VUS. These results provide insight into the importance of pretest genetic counseling and the need for increased social and informational support for parents of children who receive inconclusive genetic testing results. We conclude that relying solely on the patient or guardian to manage uncertain results may be insufficient.

Abstract
Background Genetic diseases are chronic conditions with relevant impact on the lives of patients and their families. In USA and Europe it is estimated a prevalence of 60 million affected subjects, 75% of whom are in developmental age. A significant number of newborns are admitted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) for reasons different from prematurity, although the prevalence of those with genetic diseases is unknown. It is, then, common for the neonatologist to start a diagnostic process on suspicion of a genetic disease or malformation syndrome, or to make and communicate these diagnoses. Many surveys showed that the degree of parental satisfaction with the methods of communication of diagnosis is low. Poor communication may have short and long-term negative effects on health and psychological and social development of the child and his family. We draw up recommendations on this issue, shared by 6 Italian Scientific Societies and 4 Parents’ Associations, aimed at making the neonatologist’s task easier at the difficult time of communication to parents of a genetic disease/malformation syndrome diagnosis for their child. Methods We used the method of the consensus paper. A multidisciplinary panel of experts was first established, based on the clinical and scientific sharing of the thematic area of present recommendations. They were suggested by the Boards of the six Scientific Societies that joined the initiative: Italian Societies of Pediatrics, Neonatology, Human Genetics, Perinatal Medicine, Obstetric and Gynecological Ultrasound and Biophysical Methodologies, and Pediatric Genetic Diseases and Congenital Disabilities. To obtain a deeper and global vision of the communication process, and to reach a better clinical management of patients and their families, representatives of four Parents’ Associations were also recruited: Italian Association of Down People, Cornelia de Lange National Volunteer Association, Italian Federation of Rare Diseases, and Williams Syndrome People Association. They worked from September 2019 to November 2020 to achieve a consensus on the recommendations for the communication of a new diagnosis of genetic disease. Results The consensus of experts drafted a final document defining the recommendations, for the neonatologist and/or the pediatrician working in a fist level birthing center, on the first communication of genetic disease or malformation syndrome diagnosis. Although there is no universal communication technique to make the informative process effective, we tried to identify a few relevant strategic principles that the neonatologist/pediatrician may use in the relationship with the family. We also summarized basic principles and significant aspects relating to the modalities of interaction with families in a table, in order to create an easy tool for the neonatologist to be applied in the daily care practice. We finally obtained an intersociety document, now published on the websites of the Scientific Societies involved. Conclusions The neonatologist/pediatrician is often the first to observe complex syndromic pictures, not always identified before birth, although today more frequently prenatally diagnosed. It is necessary for him to know the aspects of genetic diseases related to communication and bioethics, as well as the biological and clinical ones, which together outline the cornerstones of the multidisciplinary care of these patients. This consensus provide practical recommendations on how to make the first communication of a genetic disease /malformation syndrome diagnosis. The proposed goal is to make easier the informative process, and to implement the best practices in the relationship with the family. A better doctor-patient/family interaction may improve health outcomes of the child and his family, as well as reduce legal disputes with parents and the phenomenon of defensive medicine.

Abstract
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive childhood onset neuromuscular disease with no known cure. There is extensive literature about the impact of a diagnosis on the psychosocial well-being of unaffected siblings, with a need for additional research to provide information about optimal ways to disclose this information to unaffected children. We sought to explore the parental experiences of disclosing a sibling's diagnosis of DMD to unaffected children who were age 8-17 years old either at the time of their sibling's diagnosis or presently. Parents were recruited through Maryland Muscular Dystrophy Association, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Neuromuscular Center. An interview guide, rooted in family communication, was created to incorporate themes and topics found in literature specific to DMD and disclosure to unaffected siblings. We qualitatively explored these experiences through semi-structured interviews and performed thematic analysis using a coding system to identify overarching themes and subthemes. Several main themes regarding challenges to the disclosure process emerged. We identified the following themes in procedural aspects of disclosure: lack of provider support, importance of the DMD community, and open and gradual timeline of disclosure. Under emotional experiences, we identified these themes: overwhelming nature, elements of surprise disclosure, and balancing parental and sibling needs. Most questions from unaffected siblings related to procedural elements of care such as treatments and equipment. Additional unanticipated themes emerged that may contribute to the knowledge of family culture surrounding DMD: the complex role of Facebook as a family resource, deferring carrier testing for siblings, and inclusion of DMD in school projects. While the process of disclosure is complicated by a variety of factors such as lack of provider support and overwhelming emotional burden, families highlight the importance of open communication in discussion with unaffected children.

Abstract
Newborn screening for cystic fibrosis has resulted in diagnosis often before symptoms are recognised, leading to benefits including reduced disease severity, decreased burden of care, and lower costs. The psychological impact of this often unsought diagnosis on the parents of seemingly well children is less well understood. The time during which the screening result is communicated to families but before the confirmatory test results are available is recognised as a period of uncertainty and it is this uncertainty that can impact most on parents. Evidence suggests this may be mitigated against by ensuring the time between communication and confirmatory testing is minimized and health professionals involved in communicating positive newborn screening results and diagnostic results for cystic fibrosis to families are knowledgeable and able to provide appropriate reassurance. This is particularly important in the case of false positive results or when the child is given a Cystic Fibrosis Screen Positive, Inconclusive Diagnosis designation. However, to date, there are no formal mechanisms in place to support health professionals undertaking this challenging role, which would enable them to meet the expectations set out in specific guidance.

Abstract
As the technical ability for genetic diagnosis continues to improve, an increasing number of diagnoses are made in infancy or as early as the neonatal period. Many of these diagnoses are known to be associated with developmental delay and intellectual disability, features that would not be clinically detectable at the time of diagnosis. Others may be associated with cognitive impairment, but the incidence and severity are yet to be fully described. These neonates and infants with genetic diagnoses therefore represent an emerging group of patients who are at high risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities. Although there are well-established developmental supports for high-risk infants, particularly preterm infants, after discharge from the NICU, programs specifically for infants with genetic diagnoses are rare. And although previous research has demonstrated the positive effect of early developmental interventions on outcomes among preterm infants, the impact of such supports for infants with genetic disorders who may be born term, remains to be understood. We therefore review the literature regarding existing developmental assessment and intervention approaches for children with genetic disorders, evaluating these in the context of current developmental supports postdischarge for preterm infants. Further research into the role of developmental support programs for early assessment and intervention in high-risk neonates diagnosed with rare genetic disorders is needed.

Abstract
Disease advocacy organizations (DAOs) have traditionally focused on raising awareness of rare diseases, providing educational resources to patients, and supporting patients and families. Previous research has described how scientists collaborate with DAOs, but few empirical data are available regarding the extent to which physicians interact with DAOs and how those interactions impact patient care. We conducted a national survey of 230 board-certified pediatric neurologists to assess their engagement with DAOs and their beliefs about the impact of DAOs on patient care. In that context, we evaluated a set of 24 items describing interactions between physicians and DAOs. Exploratory factor analysis produced a 19-item model capturing four types of physician-DAO engagement: (1) accessing or distributing DAO-produced materials (6 items, alpha = 0.80); (2) consulting on DAO activities (5 items, alpha = 0.81); (3) collaborating with DAOs on research activities (6 items, alpha = 0.80); and (4) co-producing scholarly materials with DAOs (2 items, alpha = 0.80). Our data indicate that physicians engage with DAOs in more frequent and diverse ways than has been previously reported. Almost all physicians in our sample had interacted directly with a DAO in some way, from low-effort activities such as visiting a DAO's website to deeper forms of engagement including coauthoring journal articles. These findings may provide a framework for bioethicists to characterize the nature and extent of physician interactions with advocacy organizations, which is critical for evaluating the ethical implications of physician-DAO relationships.

Abstract
22q11.2 DS is characterised by its variability, rarity and variety of features ranging from congenital heart conditions to psychiatric and behavioural issues. As a result, health information–seeking behaviour is different from other more common conditions. An exploratory study was carried out to understand how parents access information and support, and how that information is shared. Qualitative interviews were carried out with families and support group representatives, and thematic analysis was applied. Four main themes emerged from our findings: perceptions of clinical expertise, parent empowerment, support group activities and community building via an Internet platform. Our thematic analysis enabled the construction of a possible model of information-seeking behaviour in parents and carers of children with 22q11.2 DS. We discuss the model and how the understanding of how information is shared and gathered can aid in clinical practice.

Abstract
Whole exome sequencing (WES) is expected to impact patient management, but data surrounding the types of downstream effects and how frequently these effects are observed depending on the type of WES results received is limited. This study investigated changes to medical management and genetic counseling (GC) options following WES for individuals with positive and negative results. Electronic medical records of patients who had positive (n = 37) or negative (n = 41) WES results from Cincinnati Children's Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Pre- and post-WES management and GC options were analyzed as were differences between positive and negative results. Almost all participants (97%) were observed to have at least one difference in medical management and/or GC options following WES. Comparing pre- and post-WES detected significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in genetic testing, imaging, and metabolic testing regardless of WES results. Participants with positive results also had significant differences in recurrence risk, reproductive options, testing for family members, and support groups. Pre- to post-WES differences were significantly different between participants with positive and negative results in specialist referrals, lifestyle recommendations, recurrence risk, and all GC options (p ≤ 0.05); specifically, participants with positive results were more likely to have differences in these categories. Overall, differences in medical management and/or GC options were observed for participants with both types of WES results (positive and negative). Results from this study may contribute to the understanding of how WES impacts patients and their care and thus improve its utilization.

Abstract
Sharing genetic risk information in families can be very challenging. However, the consequences of poor communication can be detrimental to the psychological health and well-being of parents and children in the present and the long term. Family nursing can play an important role in supporting family communication about genetic conditions. This role has several components: Firstly, improved assessment of families affected by or at risk from inherited genetic conditions. Secondly, facilitation of families' discussions of genetic risk, especially between parents and children. Family nurses can use an integrated model of family care to support parents and their children in discussion of genetic risk information throughout the child's development, including provision of assistance specifically for young people, who want to discuss the issues they face with informed nurses. Thirdly there is a role for family nurses in educating other specialist nurses in taking a more family-focused approach when they are caring for patients affected by genetic conditions. If the full benefits of genomic technologies are to be recognized and implemented, it is essential that the relational impact of the science be strengthened to enhance family relationships and support genetic risk information sharing.

Abstract
Few reports of educational and counseling support resources exist for Lynch syndrome (LS), a disorder requiring multi-organ cancer screening and specialized medical care throughout adult life. Here we describe the development and efficacy of two resources designed to address this need, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Clinical Genetics Service annual Lynch Syndrome Educational Workshop (LSEW), and a quarterly Lynch Syndrome Patient Advocacy Network (LSPAN) support group. The LSEW and LSPAN were implemented beginning in 2012. Participant survey data evaluating satisfaction, clarity, and unmet needs for each event were retrospectively analyzed and summarized using descriptive statistics. Annual LSEW attendance ranged from 53 to 75 total participants. LSEW year 1 participants indicated a need for a support group, and preferred in-person meetings at a frequency of every 3-6 months. For LSEW year 2-5 participants, >96 % reported satisfaction with the LSEW, and >82 % expressed interest in secure online support. Common themes for improvement included increased time for question and answer sessions and additional introductory genetics education. Responding LSPAN participants (n = 57 total survey responses in 11 meetings) found the meetings helpful (100 %), information clear (91 %), and presence of a genetic counselor useful (67 %). Desired discussion topics included coping with stress and anxiety, development of a support network, family communication about LS, genetic testing decisions, and bereavement. Following genetic counseling, a need exists for ongoing educational and emotional support in LS. Implementation of resources such as the LSEW and LSPAN is feasible and perceived as helpful by participants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Delayed discussion about infertility with individuals affected by Turner syndrome (TS) has been found to result in psychological and social harm. The aim of this study was to identify barriers experienced when discussing infertility and determine resource types that may facilitate this conversation. METHODS An electronic survey, given to caregivers of girls with TS diagnosed at <5 years. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Fifty percent of parents surveyed had spoken to their daughter about their possible infertility. Parents who had not yet discussed infertility with their daughter had younger daughters and reported more barriers in having the conversation. Although most individuals did not use resources to facilitate the conversation, they did express interest in additional resources.

Abstract
Despite being the most common congenital facial anomaly, little is understood about the genetic contribution to isolated clefts of the lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P). 'OzCleft', a family-based genotype/phenotype study, is investigating this further. Participation for families involves various clinical investigations of the child with the cleft, and their unaffected sibling(s) and parents. Informal feedback from individuals involved in OzCleft suggested that participation in this research programme had benefits for families. Taking a qualitative approach, this study sought to investigate this hypothesis further. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with nine parents who had participated in OzCleft. All parents described participation as a positive experience for themselves and their families. Perceived benefits included a greater appreciation of the cleft treatment experience by unaffected family members. Being involved in a genetic study raised issues for parents regarding the cause of clefting in their child. While some parents found the possibility of a genetic component reassuring, it also raised questions about the potential implications for future generations. Parents were largely unsure about how to communicate this information to their children and the predictive value of this information. This study suggests a lack of genetic understanding and/or perceived value of genetic information by parents of children with CL/P that, in turn, highlights the need for increased support from genetic health professionals in this area.
