Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease. Although smoking results in an acute effect of relaxation and positive mood through dopamine release, smoking is thought to increase stress symptoms such as heart rate and blood pressure from nicotine-induced effects on the HPA axis and increased cortisol. Despite the importance in understanding the mechanisms in smoking maintenance, little is known about the overall protein and physiological response to smoking. There may be multiple functions involved that if identified might help in improving methods for behavioral and pharmacological interventions. Therefore, our goal for this pilot study was to identify proteins in the saliva that change in response to an acute smoking event versus acute sham smoking event in smokers and non-smokers, respectively. METHODS We employed the iTRAQ technique followed by Mass Spectrometry to identify differentially expressed proteins in saliva of smokers and non-smokers after smoking cigarettes and sham smoking, respectively. We also validated some of the salivary proteins by ELISA or western blotting. In addition, salivary cortisol and salivary amylase (sAA) activity were measured. RESULTS In all, 484 salivary proteins were identified. Several proteins were elevated as well as decreased in smokers compared to non-smokers. Among these were proteins associated with stress response including fibrinogen alpha, cystatin A and sAA. Our investigation also highlights methodological considerations in study design, sampling and iTRAQ analysis. CONCLUSIONS We suggest further investigation of other differentially expressed proteins in this study including ACBP, A2ML1, APOA4, BPIB1, BPIA2, CAH1, CAH6, CYTA, DSG1, EST1, GRP78, GSTO1, sAA, SAP, STAT, TCO1, and TGM3 that might assist in improving methods for behavioral and pharmacological interventions for smokers.

Abstract
A new boronic acid derivative functionalized with a 4-(3-(4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole-2-yl)phenyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl)phenyl (IOP) moiety was synthesized for use as a sequential "on-off-on"-type relay fluorescence probe for Fe3+ ions and F- ions with high selectivity and sensitivity under physiological conditions. The introduction of Fe3+ to IOP boronic acid (IOPBA) formed an Fe3+IOPBA complex, which led to quenching of the blue fluorescence intensity at 458 nm. The lowest-energy conformation of IOPBA was theoretically predicted to adopt an extended structure, and the Fe3+ ion in the Fe3+IOPBA complex was coordinated to two phenyl groups to form a π-complex. Upon addition of F- to the Fe3+IOPBA complex, the original fluorescence was recovered due to formation of [FeF6]3‒, resulting in "on-off-on"-type sensor behavior. IOPBA showed high selectivity towards Fe3+ among other cations. Moreover, the Fe3+IOPBA complex showed specific selectivity towards F-, with other cations and anions not interfering with detection. Both sensing processes showed 1:1 stoichiometry with binding constants of 6.87 × 106 and 4.49 × 106 mol-1 L for Fe3+ with IOPBA and F- with Fe3+IOPBA, respectively. The limits of detection for Fe3+ and F- were 10 and 1 nM, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied in real water samples. Furthermore, the probe had low cytotoxicity and was successfully used as a bioimaging reagent to detect intracellular Fe3+ and F- in living HeLa cells.

Abstract
Background Cigarette smoking affects the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic behavior of many drugs and causes deterioration of pulmonary mechanics. We have evaluated the effect of cigarette smoking on washout time after one minimum alveolar concentration-h (1 MAC-h) of sevoflurane anesthesia. Methods We investigated the washout time of sevoflurane in 30 non-smoking and 30 healthy cigarette smoking (≥20 cigarettes/day for>1 year) ASA I-II physical status patients, aged 18-63 years, who were candidates for otorhinolaryngologic elective surgery under 1MAC-h standardized sevoflurane anesthesia. At the end of the surgery, the sevoflurane vaporizer was turned off and the time taken for the sevoflurane concentration to decrease to MAC-awake (0.3) and 0.1 MAC levels were recorded. In addition, the ratio of the fractions of inspired concentration (Fi) and expired concentration of sevoflurane (Fexp) at 1 MAC and Fexp of sevoflurane at 0.1MAC were recorded. The patients were mechanically ventilated during the washout time. Results We found no difference between the 2 study groups with regard to washout time of sevoflurane. The times of 1MAC down to MAC-awake (106 ± 48 sec in non-smokers vs 97 ± 37 sec in smokers, p > 0.05) and down to 0.1MAC (491 ± 187 sec in non-smokers vs 409 ± 130 sec in smokers, p > 0.05) were similar. Similarly, there were no significant differences in the ratios of Fi/Fexp at 1MAC (1.18 in non-smokers vs. 1.19 in smokers, p > 0.05) and Fexp of sevoflurane at 0.1MAC (0.26 in non-smokers vs. 0.25 in smokers, p > 0.05). Conclusions Washout time of 1MAC-h sevoflurane anesthesia is not appear to be effected by cigarette smoking in patients without significant pulmonary disease.

Abstract
The DFT-B3LYP and MP2 methods with 6-311G** and 6-311++G** basis sets have been applied to study the complexation energies of the host-guest complexes between the cone calix[4]arene and Li(+) or Na(+) on the B3LYP optimized geometries. A comparison of the complexation energies obtained from the MP2(full) with those from MP2(fc) method is also carried out. The result shows that it is essential to introduce the diffuse basis set into the geometry optimizations and complexation energy calculations of the alkali-metal cation-pi interaction complexes of calix[4]arene, and the D (e) values show a maximum of 21.13 kJ mol(-1) (14.45% of relative error) between the MP2(full)/6-311++G** and MP2(fc)/6-311++G** method. For Li(+) cation, the complexation is mainly energetically stabilized by the lower rim/cation (namely O-Li(+)) interaction. However, binding energies and NBO analyses confirm that Na(+) cation prefers to enter the calix[4]arene cavity and the cation-pi interaction is predominant, which contradicts the previous low-level theoretical studies. Furthermore, the complexation with Li(+) is preferred over that with Na(+) by at least 12.70 kJ mol(-1) at MP2(full)/6-311++G**//B3LYP/6-311++G** level.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Many patients who smoke cigarettes require anesthesia and surgery. Their smoking can have profound consequences for perioperative management. Efforts to help them quit will be rewarded by both improved immediate postoperative outcomes and the long-term health benefits after surgery. This review will introduce basic concepts important to perioperative tobacco control and cover recent advances in the field. RECENT FINDINGS Evidence continues to accumulate regarding how smoking increases perioperative risk, especially of wound-related complications. There is also new information regarding how abstinence from smoking reduces risk, including how the timing of preoperative abstinence affects outcome. Methods to help surgical patients continue to be developed, taking advantage of surgery as a teachable moment for intervention. There is a need to develop methods practical in the surgical setting. Several pharmacological tools to help surgical patients quit smoking are available, including a new partial acetylcholine receptor agonist. SUMMARY The fact that the perioperative period represents an excellent opportunity to help surgical patients quit smoking is becoming increasingly apparent. Although these efforts, and the evidence base to support them, are still at an early stage of development, seizing this opportunity will benefit both the short and long-term health of our patients who smoke.

Abstract
Pyreno[2,1-b]pyrrole and its dimeric derivative display excellent selectivity and sensitivity for detection of fluoride ion, in comparison with chloride, bromide, iodide, acetate, dihydrogen phosphate, hydrogen sulfate, perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate ions. The hydrogen bonding with fluoride ion, both in formation and in subsequent dissociation, provides remarkable colorimetric and fluorescent changes in the visible region that are advantageous for real-time and on-site application. Detailed NMR and dynamic fluorescence spectroscopic analyses establish the associated mechanism.
