Sexual selection is positively associated with ecological generalism among agamid lizards

Color Polymorphism is a Driver of Diversification in the Lizard Family Lacertidae

Color polymorphism-two or more heritable color phenotypes maintained within a single breeding population-is an extreme type of intraspecific diversity widespread across the tree of life. Color polymorphism is hypothesized to be an engine for speciation, where morph loss or divergence between distinct color morphs within a species results in the rapid evolution of new lineages, and thus, color polymorphic lineages are expected to display elevated diversification rates. Multiple species in the lizard family Lacertidae are color polymorphic, making them an ideal group to investigate the evolutionary history of this trait and its influence on macroevolution. Here, we produce a comprehensive species-level phylogeny of the lizard family Lacertidae to reconstruct the evolutionary history of color polymorphism and test if color polymorphism has been a driver of diversification. Accounting for phylogenetic uncertainty with multiple phylogenies and simulation studies, we estimate an ancient origin of color polymorphism (111 Ma) within the Lacertini tribe (subfamily Lacertinae). Color polymorphism most likely evolved few times in the Lacertidae and has been lost at a much faster rate than gained. Evolutionary transitions to color polymorphism are associated with shifts in increased net diversification rate in this family of lizards. Reproductive biology and annual reproductive cycles of two sympatric lineages of Bostrychus sinensis with a natural habitat on southeastern coast of China

The two phylogeographic lineages [South China Sea (SCS) lineage and East China Sea (ESC) lineage] of the four-eyed sleeper (Bostrychus sinensis) occur sympatrically along the southeastern coast of China, where there is a small percentage of hybrids in a natural habitat. To assess the mechanism responsible for the incomplete reproductive isolation between the SCS and ECS lineages of four-eyed sleeper, there was sampling of individuals from the Yueqing Bay from November 2018 to November 2019 to determine whether there are differences in characteristics of the reproductive cycles and reproductive biology. The two lineages varied in reproductive seasonality, body size and shape, and egg number. The SCS lineage spawned annually between May and August, with the absolute fecundity (AF) of the SCS lineage being 9960 to 39,517 eggs per female, and there was positive allometric growth of this species. The ECS lineage spawned annually between June and July, with females producing 4064 to 10,370 eggs per fish and individuals having an isometric growth pattern. Preliminary results indicated that there was partial overlap in the spawning season between the two lineages in the sympatric region, which may not be a primary factor in the incomplete reproductive isolation. Furthermore, the lineage differences in fecundity and body shape and size may lead to variation in mate choice and reproductive strategy. The results from this study provide insight into the biology, reproductive strategies, and speciation of the four-eyed sleepers.

Environmental gradients predict the ratio of environmentally acquired carotenoids to self-synthesised pteridine pigments

Carotenoids are important pigments producing integument colouration; however, their dietary availability may be limited in some environments. Many species produce yellow to red hues using a combination of carotenoids and self-synthesised pteridine pigments. A compelling hypothesis is that pteridines replace carotenoids in environments where carotenoid availability is limited. To test this hypothesis, we quantified concentrations of five carotenoid and six pteridine pigments in multiple skin colours and individuals from 27 species of agamid lizards. We show that environmental gradients predict the ratio of carotenoids to pteridines; carotenoid concentrations are lower and pteridine concentrations higher in arid environments with low vegetation productivity. Both carotenoid and pteridine pigments were present in all species, but only pteridine concentrations explained colour variation among species and there were no correlations between carotenoid and pteridine pigments with a similar hue. These results suggest that in arid environments, where carotenoids are likely limited, species may compensate by synthesising more pteridines but do not necessarily replace carotenoids with pteridines of similar hue.

Interspecific allometry for sexual shape dimorphism: Macroevolution of multivariate sexual phenotypes with application to Rensch's rule

Allometric trends in the degree of sexual dimorphism with body size have long fascinated evolutionary biologists. Many male-biased clades display more prominent sexual dimorphism in larger taxa (Rensch's rule), with most examples documenting this pattern for body size dimorphism. Although sexual dimorphism in traits other than body size is equally functionally relevant, characterizing allometric patterns of sexual dimorphism in such traits is hampered by lack of an analytical framework that can accommodate multivariate phenotypes. In this article, we derive a multivariate equivalency for investigating trends in sexual dimorphism-relative to overall body size-across taxa and provide a generalized test to determine whether such allometric patterns correspond with Rensch's rule. For univariate linear traits such as body size, our approach yields equivalent results to those from standard procedures, but our test is also capable of detecting trends in multivariate datasets such as shape. Computer simulations reveal that the method displays appropriate statistical properties, and an empirical example in Mediterranean lizards provides the first demonstration of Rensch's rule in a multivariate phenotype (head shape). Our generalized procedure substantially extends the analytical toolkit for investigating macroevolutionary patterns of sexual dimorphism and seeking a better understanding of the processes that underlie them.
