Histological structure of the adrenal gland of the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba) from the Adriatic Sea

Post-hatching developmental changes in the adrenal gland of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): Histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic studies

The adrenal glands are paired abdominal endocrine organs vital to the bird's health. The present research aimed to provide a comprehensive examination of the histological, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical investigations of the adrenal gland in Japanese quail during the post hatching period. The current study was performed on 21 healthy Japanese quail chicks at different post hatching periods. Our results showed the adrenal gland is surrounded by a connective tissue capsule, which consists of dense collagen fibers containing large blood vessels, chromaffin cells, autonomic ganglia, fibroblasts, and migrating Schwann cells. The zonation of the adrenal gland is composed of a subcapsular layer, a peripheral zone, and a central zone, which gets more pronounced with age. At the ultrastructural level, the interrenal cells take the steroid-secreting cells characters; they have varying amounts of lipid droplets and abundant mitochondria. Adrenal medullary chromaffin cells showed positive immunoreactivity to the NSE. With increasing age, the chromaffin tissue's Sox10 immunoreactivity increased. β-catenin is expressed within the plasmalemma and the cytoplasm of the interrenal and chromaffin cells and its reactivity increased with age, especially in the chromaffin cells. Our results indicate the adrenal gland undergoes significant morphological changes during the postnatal life. Overall, the postnatal period is an important time for the development and maturation of the adrenal glands.

Enlargement of the human adrenal zona fasciculata and chronic psychiatric illness - an autopsy-based study

Severe mental illness (SMI) is associated with a reduced life expectancy of up to 20 years. One possible contributor to this fact is dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis. Looking at the morphology of effector organs, such as the adrenal glands themselves, could reveal insights into organ function and response to possible HPA-dysregulation. This forensic autopsy-based study investigated if there were any morphological changes in adrenal glands between decedents who had previously been submitted to a psychiatric hospital with a diagnosis of schizophrenia (n = 34), bipolar (n = 5), or depressive disorder (n = 20), any other psychiatric diagnosis (n = 36) compared with decedents who had no previous psychiatric admission (n = 40). Length of admissions to psychiatric wards and admission in the 180 days preceding death was included in regression as proxy variables for severity of illness. On the macroscopic level, we found no difference in gland weight or volume. On the microscopic level, we found a 25% increase in cross-sectional area of the zona fasciculata (ZF) in decedents who had a diagnosis of schizophrenia compared with controls (p = 0.033). Other diagnosis groups did not differ from controls. Total admission length was positively correlated with area of the ZF.Lay SummaryPeople with a severe mental disorder may be in a constant state of increased stress, which is harmful. This study looked at the adrenal gland, which produces stress hormones, to see if they were different in deceased persons who had suffered from a severe mental illness. We found that the part of the adrenal gland that produces stress hormones is larger in deceased patients who suffered from schizophrenia, but not other types of psychiatric illnesses, compared to deceased persons with no history of psychiatric illness.

Peculiarities of microstructure of the suprarenal glands of rabbits with different types of autonomic tone

The article investigates the structure of the suprarenal (adrenal) glands of male rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), in which, on the basis of electrocardiographic and variational-pulsometric studies, different types of autonomic tone were observed. This allowed the animals to be divided into three groups: 1) sympathicotonic rabbits; 2) normotonic rabbits; 3) parasympathicotonic rabbits. The animals of the first two groups were characterized by almost the same body weight, while weight of the rabbits of the third group was slightly higher. After euthanasia, the suprarenal glands were extracted for histological and histochemical analyses. Morphometric study of histopreparations revealed that in the normotonic rabbits the thickness of the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata of the suprarenal glands were of average sizes, and the area of the medulla was the smallest. The parasympathicotonic rabbits had the thickest zona glomerulosa and greatest area of the medulla, but the thinnest zona fasciculata. The sympathicotonic rabbits were observed to have the greatest thickness of the zona fasciculata of the suprarenal glands, the area of the medulla was of average values, and the thickness of the zona glumerulosa was of minimum value. The type of autonomic tone also manifests in the saturation of each of the zones with cells. The normotonic rabbits were observed to have the highest number of cells per area of 1,000 µm² in the zona fasciculata and the medulla, sympathicotonic rabbits – in the zona glomerulosa and zona reticularis, and in parasympathicotonic rabbits this parameter had average or lowest values in all the zones. The sizes of cells and their structural parts were characterized on the basis of nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio. In the zona fasciculata and medulla this parameter was highest among parasympathicotonic rabbits, and lowest in sympathicotonic rabbits. In the zona glomerulosa, almost equal values were observed in the normotonic and parasympathicotonic rabbits, while being reliably lower in sympathicotonic rabbits. By the value of nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio in the zona reticularis, the normotonic rabbits dominated, followed by the sympathicotonic animals, and the parasympathicotonic rabbits had the lowest parameters.

The morphology of the adrenal gland in the European bison (Bison bonasus)

Background

The anatomy of the adrenal glands has been widely studied in many species of domestic and wild mammals. However, there are no available literature reports describing the morphology and morphometry of the adrenal glands of the European bison (Bison bonasus).

Results

The study was conducted on 97 European bison of both sexes. The growth of the adrenal glands corresponded to the growth of the whole body, with the largest increase in size occurring in the first 2 years of the animal’s life, followed by a slower increase in size until the animal was 5–7 years old. There were no statistically significant differences between ipsilateral adrenal glands of males and females with respect to age. There was no statistically significant difference in weight between the left and the right adrenal gland. However, there was a difference in the length, width and thickness of the two glands. Reference intervals for adrenal gland size and weight were computed separately for two bison age groups (up to 2 years of age and older than two years). The adrenal gland consisted of a cortex and a medulla. The connective-tissue capsule contained two layers. It had a fibrous structure and abundant adipose tissue. The cortex was divided into three zones. The zona glomerulosa contained cells arranged in bundles and curves. Numerous apoptotic cells were observed among regular cells in the zona reticularis. There were vacuoles in the cells of both zona fasciculata and zona reticularis, which formed a foamy cytoplasm. The adrenal medulla was composed of large, dark cells with a highly basophilic cytoplasm in the superficial region and of smaller, lighter cells in deeper layers. Sinusoidal vessels were located in the central part of the medulla.

Conclusions

The left adrenal gland was significantly longer, narrower and thinner than the right one. There were no significant differences in the structure of the adrenal medulla and cortex of the European bison compared to other species of domestic and wild mammals. There was a thick layer of adipose cells at numerous locations in the adrenal capsule of the bison.

Molecular characterisation of Anisakidae larvae from fish in Adriatic Sea

In the present study, anisakids from: tuna (Thunnus thynnus) fattened in the Croatian farm in middle Adriatic Sea, three different feral fish species caught near tuna farm (Trachurus trachurus, Scomber japonicus and Oblada melanura) and fish marketed in Croatia (T. trachurus) were analysed by morphology and molecular methods. Larvae were identified to the species level by PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism and characterised by sequencing of nuclear (internal transcribed spacer) and mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2) markers. The results revealed diverse Anisakidae community consisting of: Anisakis pegreffi, Anisakis simplex (s.s.), Anisakis typica and Hysterothylacium aduncum. This is the first report of A. typica in Adriatic Sea, and also the first record of this species in T. thynnus as host in Mediterranean Sea. Molecular identification of H. aduncum found in co-infection with Anisakis larvae type I expands our knowledge of the occurrence of these taxa in the Adriatic Sea. Zoonotic Anisakidae worms found in fish from the Adriatic Sea could represent a risk to acquire parasitic infection/allergies in Croatia.
