Abstract
The late gestation period is crucial for fetal growth and development, impacting swine enterprises' profitability. Various nutritional strategies have been explored to enhance reproductive performance in sows, but findings regarding birth weight and litter size have been inconsistent. This study investigated the effects of increased feeding allowance during the late gestation period on the reproductive performance and farrowing behavior of primiparous and multiparous sows. A total of 28 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were used in this experiment, and fed 2.50 kg/d or 3.50 kg/d from 84 days of gestation until farrowing. Farrowing behavior was monitored using a DeepEyesTM M3SEN camera. The data were analyzed using the 2 × 2 factorial within Statistical Analysis System (SAS, 2011, Version 9.3) software. The results indicated that regardless of the parity number, sows fed a high diet exhibited a numerical increase in the total number of born piglets and a significant increase in milk yield (p = 0.014) and piglet birthweight (p = 0.023). Backfat thickness loss was significantly higher in sows with a 2.50 kg feeding allowance (p = 0.022), and the total number of piglets born, live births, and litter size were numerically higher in sows fed 3.50 kg per day. Moreover, stillborn piglets, mortality rate, and re-estrus days were numerically lower in sows with a high feeding allowance. The diet and parity did not individually affect the average duration of farrowing and farrowing intervals. However, the duration of postural changes in sows after farrowing was significantly reduced (p = 0.012). The principal component analysis revealed 81.40% and 80.70% differences upon partial least-squares discriminant analysis. Therefore, increasing feeding allowance during the late gestation period, regardless of parity, could positively influence sows' reproductive performance and piglets' growth performance during the lactation phase.

Abstract
Background Urinary tract infections (UTI) of sows characterized by cystitis, which may progress to ureteritis and pyelonephritis, can affect their productivity, longevity and welfare. In this study, we determined the prevalence of UTI by histopathology and bacteriology. Furthermore, we investigated possible associations between histologically confirmed cystitis and the results of urinalysis and urine cultures in culled sows from three farrow-to-finish herds in Greece. Materials and methods One hundred eighty-five routinely culled sows were included in the study. Their urinary bladder was collected from abattoirs and subjected to histopathology. Furthermore, urinalysis and urine cultures were performed on urine samples aseptically collected from the bladders. Results Histologically confirmed cystitis was evident in 85/185 (45.94%) culled sows. Among those, 44 (51.76%) suffered from acute and 41 (48.24%) from chronic inflammation. The majority of positive urine cultures were due to colonization of the urinary tract with E.coli, which accounted for 55.81% of the total cases, followed by Staphylococcus spp. which accounted for 18.60% of detected infections. Evidence of cystitis was associated with bacteriuria and sows with bacteriuria were 2.30 (P = 0.03, 95% CI: 1.10–4.83) times more likely to have histologically confirmed cystitis compared to sows with negative urine cultures. Bacteriuria was associated with proteinuria (P < 0.01, OR = 9.72, 2.63–35.88), increased urine pH (P < 0.01, 3.40, 1.10–10.56) and presence of sediment (P < 0.01, 6.00, 1.50–23.76) in urine. Sows with proteinuria had 9.72 (P < 0.01, 2.63–35.88) times higher odds of bacteriuria than those without. Histologically defined cystitis was associated with proteinuria (P < 0.01, 2.03–13.20) and decreased urine pH (P < 0.01, 0.13–0.72). Sows with proteinuria were 5.18 (P < 0.01, 2.03–13.2) times more likely to have histological lesions consistent with cystitis, than those without. For one unit increase in pH, it was 3.20 (P = 0.006, 1.39–7.69) times less likely for a sow to have chronic or acute cystitis compared to absence of cystitis. Conclusion In the studied population, UTI affected almost one out of two culled sows. Bacteriuria, which was more common among sows with UTI than those without, was mainly ascribed to members of the intestinal and environmental bacteria. Proteinuria and the existence of urine sediment which were associated with UTI, could be used as proxy traits for UTI in live sows.

Abstract
The use of hyperprolific sow lines has increased litter size considerably in the last three decades. Nowadays, in some countries litters can reach up to 18-20 piglets being a major challenge for the sow's physiology during pregnancy, parturition and lactation. The increased number of piglets born per litter prolongs sensibly the duration of farrowing, decreases the piglets' average weight at birth and their vitality, increases the competition for colostrum intake and can affect negatively piglets' survival. This review aims to describe how large litters can affect the immune system of the sow and the piglets and proposes measures to improve this condition.

Abstract
Abstract
The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) and associated clinical signs in farmed sows in the Republic of Macedonia (RM) in the first 12-24 h postpartum. A total of 202 sows of different parity and different genetic lines from 5 pig farms in RM were included in the study. The sows and their litters were clinically examined 12-24 hours after farrowing. Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome was detected in 23.3% of all clinically examined sows, while prevalence between farms ranged from 14.8% to 38.1%. Altered piglet’s behavior was the most frequent clinical pattern observed in 68.1% of the PDS–affected (PDSA) sows. Regarding the clinical signs in PDSA sows detected among farms, significant differences were observed in the altered piglet’s behavior (p<0.05) and hypogalactia (p<0.05). Endometritis was more often detected in older sows (90%) compared to endometritis in younger animals (44.4%). In addition, fever was also more frequently diagnosed in higher parity (≥3 parity) sows (55.0%) in contrast to other PDSA sows (22.2%). This study has demonstrated the presence of PDS in farmed sows in RM. High frequency of altered piglet’s behavior found in this study could be an useful indicator for early detection of lactation problems in sows. Frequent pathological vaginal discharge in older sows indicates that endometritis plays an important role in the clinical manifestation of PDS. Further investigations should be conducted in order to identify specific risk factors associated with clinical PDS in farmed sows in RM.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of AA and energy intake during late gestation on piglet birth weight and reproductive performance of high-performing (14.5 total born) gilts and sows housed under commercial conditions. At d 90 of gestation, a total of 1,102 females (PIC 1050) were housed in pens by parity group (gilts or sows) with approximately 63 gilts and 80 sows in each pen, blocked by BW within each pen, and each female was randomly assigned to dietary treatments within BW block. Dietary treatments consisted of combinations of 2 standardized ileal digestible (SID) AA intakes (10.7 or 20.0 g/d SID Lys and other AA met or exceeded the NRC [2012] recommendations) and 2 energy intakes (4.50 or 6.75 Mcal/d intake of NE) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models specified to recognize pen as the experimental unit for parity and the individual female as the experimental unit for dietary treatments. Results indicate an overall positive effect of high energy intake on BW gain during late gestation, although this effect was more manifest under conditions of high, as opposed to low, AA intake (interaction, < 0.001). Furthermore, the magnitude of BW gain response to increased energy intake was greater ( < 0.001) for sows compared with gilts. Sows fed high energy intake had a reduced probability of piglets born alive ( < 0.004) compared with those fed low energy, but no evidence for differences was found in gilts. This can be explained by an increased probability ( = 0.002) of stillborns in sows fed high energy intake vs. sows fed low energy intake. There were no evidences for differences among dietary treatments in litter birth weight and individual piglet birth weight of total piglets born. However, individual born alive birth weight was approximately 30 ± 8.2 g heavier ( = 0.011) for females fed high, as opposed to low, energy intake. Furthermore, piglets born alive were approximately 97 ± 9.5 g heavier ( < 0.001) for sows than for gilts. Preweaning mortality was decreased ( = 0.034) for females fed high AA intake compared with females fed low AA intake regardless of energy level. In conclusion, 1) BW gain of gilts and sows depended not only on energy but also on AA intake, 2) sows fed increased amount of energy had an increased stillborn rate, and 3) increased energy intake during late gestation had a positive effect on individual piglet birth weight with no evidence for such an effect for AA intake.

AbstractPlasma oxytocin was measured in 11 multiparous sows for 13 h after the start of parturition to confirm the existence of early milk ejections and determine whether they were associated with pulsatile oxytocin release. The relationship between oxytocin concentrations and duration of parturition was also analysed. Oxytocin was released in pulses during and after parturition and mean concentrations reached maximum 2 to 4 h after the first birth. Discrete milk ejections occurred during parturition but only 42% of these were associated with oxytocin peaks before 4 hpost partum. After this more than 80% of milk ejections occurred with oxytocin peaks. Sow grunting increased during milk ejections and peak grunt rate increased after parturition. Oxytocin peaks without milk ejections did not lead to an increased rate of grunting. Sows with prolonged parturition had lower basal and peak oxytocin concentrations. During the first 4 h only half of the piglets were born during an oxytocin peak. Discrete milk ejections with oxytocin peaks can occur before parturition is completed. However, during the first 4 hpost partum, basal oxytocin concentrations may be high enough for milk ejection to occur without further oxytocin secretion. Both milk ejection and oxytocin release are necessary for the sow to increase grunt rate. Low oxytocin concentration is associated with prolonged parturition.

Abstract
High-producing sows develop typical signs of an inflammatory condition and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the liver during lactation. At present, it is unknown whether a negative energy balance (NEB) is causative for this. Therefore, an experiment with lactating sows, which were either restricted in their feed intake to 82% of their energy requirement (Group FR) or were fed to meet their energy requirement (Control), was performed and the effect on ER stress-induced unfolded protein response (UPR), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and NOD-like receptor P3 (NLRP3) inflammasome signalling in the liver was evaluated. Relative mRNA concentrations of several genes involved in ER stress-induced UPR, NF-κB and NLRP3 inflammasome signalling were reduced in the liver of Group FR compared to the Control group. Plasma concentrations of haptoglobin and C-reactive protein were 13% and 37%, respectively, lower in Group FR than in the Control group, but these differences were not significant. In conclusion, feed restriction in lactating sows inhibits pro-inflammatory and ER stress signalling pathways in the liver, which suggests that not the NEB per se is causative for inflammation and ER stress induction in the liver of lactating sows. Rather it is likely that ER stress during lactation is the consequence of the presence of potent pro-inflammatory and ER stress-inducing stimuli, such as cytokines, reactive oxygen species and microbial components, which enter the circulation as a result of infectious diseases that frequently occur in sows after farrowing.

Abstract
A short duration of farrowing is important for piglet survival as a delay can increase the number of stillborn. Many factors may affect the duration of farrowing, including breed, age of the sow, length of gestation, number of piglets born, housing (CRATE vs. PEN), body condition of the sow and state of constipation. The aim of the present study was to investigate these factors and how they interact with each other and thus increasing the risk of prolonged farrowing. The total duration of farrowing and average piglet birth interval were recorded in 172 sows from two herds (HERD-1, n = 76; HERD-2, n = 96). Back-fat measurements and intestinal activity (based on the mean of a constipation index) were measured in all 172 sows. The total duration of farrowing was 272 +/- 152 min (mean +/- SD, n = 172): 301 +/- 165 min (n = 115) in the CRATE group and 212 +/- 95 min (n = 57; P < 0.05) in the PEN group. The average piglet birth interval was 26 +/- 25 min (mean +/- SD, n = 172): 29 +/- 29 min (n = 115) in the CRATE group and 19 +/- 10 min (n = 57; P < 0.05) in the PEN group. Housing (P < 0.05), stillborn (P < 0.001), back-fat average (P < 0.001) and constipation index (P < 0.05) significantly correlated with the duration of farrowing. In conclusion, allowing the sow to move freely before farrowing, reducing the constipation state and avoid excessive fattening during late pregnancy all appear to be key factors in shortening farrowing time and reducing perinatal mortality.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of two types of housing on the duration of farrowing and the physiology of sows before and after farrowing. We assigned 20 sows (PEN) to farrowing pens (210 cm x 335 cm) enriched with straw bedding and 18 sows (CRATE) were placed in farrowing crates (80 cm x 210 cm) with no bedding material. We sampled the animals during period A (from day -5 before farrowing to day +1 of lactation) and during period B (from days +2 to +5 of lactation). We took daily venous blood samples for progesterone measurements and four salivary samples per day (at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00) for cortisol determination. In addition, intensive blood sampling was performed in 18 catheterised sows (9 PEN and 9 CRATE) to determine the level of oxytocin during farrowing. The treatment had no effect on litter size, piglet mortality at birth and weaning, growth of the piglets between days 1 and 5 of life. We found no significant difference in the cortisol concentration between the two groups during period A (p=0.36). Significant difference was found in period B, where the CRATE group had a higher concentration of cortisol than the PEN group (p=0.03). Progesterone concentration did not differ between the two groups (p=0.80). The duration of farrowing was on average 93 min longer in the CRATE sows (n=15), with a mean of 311+/-35 min (mean+/-S.D.), than in the PEN sows (n=19), with a mean of 218+/-24 min (p=0.03). In addition, the mean interval between each piglet expulsion was longer in the CRATE group (n=11), with a mean of 25+/-4 min, than in the PEN group (n=15) with a mean of 16+/-2 min (p=0.05). During farrowing, the post-expulsion oxytocin pulses average tended to be higher in the PEN group (77.6+/-47.6 ng/ml) than in the CRATE group (38.1+/-24.6 pg/ml) (p=0.08). The concentration of oxytocin strongly affected the duration of farrowing (p<0.001). In conclusion, this study showed that the environment influences the physiology of the sow during farrowing and early lactation.

Abstract
Slaughterhouse sampling and examination of urogenital tracts of 499 sows and gilts culled for reproductive reasons from 21 Hungarian herds were performed over a 6-year period. The aim was to estimate the prevalence of different urogenital tract lesions, and to provide sensitivity and specificity estimates for macroscopic and bacteriological examinations in the diagnosis of urocystitis and endometritis. Furthermore, the association between endometritis and urocystitis was assessed. The prevalence of main lesions of the urogenital tract was similar to that reported in other studies. The 'sensitivity' of macroscopic and bacteriological methods was determined statistically by taking histopathology as the 'Gold Standard'. As a result, the 'sensitivity' of macroscopic methods for the diagnosis of endometritis and urocystitis was < or = 18.1% and 47.9%, respectively, while the 'sensitivity' of bacteriology for the diagnosis of the same conditions was < or = 31.8% and 63.0%, respectively. The presumed positive association between urocystitis and endometritis was confirmed; it was not confounded by parity. Animals affected by urocystitis had a 3.5 times higher odds to simultaneously have endometritis than animals without urocystitis.

Abstract
Farrowing disorders in the sow have detrimental consequences in pig farming and many points of the condition still remain obscure. It was suggested to investigate blood pressure since this might provide an early indication of farrowing disturbances. A first study involved 29 pregnant sows. Blood pressure was measured indirectly using a pediatric occlusive cuff unrolled around the base of the tail and connected to a manometer. The recordings were made on resting sows in recumbent position. The disposal was considered suitable. The values obtained showed a good repeatability. Then a prospective survey involving 122 sows was undertaken. Blood pressure was measured at the 111th day of pregnancy. Systolic values ranged from 89 to 142 mm Hg (mean: 112.4). Physical profile of the sows (weight, backfat thickness) slightly influenced systolic level. On the other hand the sows obtaining the lowest values for systolic pressure were more prone to develop a prolonged farrowing. According to the lack of a parallel direct blood pressure measurement, these results have to be taken with caution. The perspective of early detection of "at risk" individuals with respect to MMA through blood pressure measurement, needs further work.
