ABO blood groups in relation to the infection rate of dermatophytosis

Superficial mycoses, a matter of concern: Global and Indian scenario-an updated analysis

Superficial mycoses of skin, nails and hair are among the common fungal infections. They are caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophyte moulds, yeasts and yeast-like fungi. Such fungal infections are widespread all over the world and are predominant in tropical as well as subtropical regions. Environmental factors, such as warm, humid and pitiable hygienic conditions, are conducive for their growth and proliferation. Although it does not cause mortality, it is known to be associated with excessive morbidity which may be psychological or physical. This affects the quality of life of the infected individuals which leads to a negative impact on their occupational, emotional and social status. Such infections are increasing on a global scale and, therefore, are of serious concern worldwide. This review article covers the global and Indian scenario of superficial mycoses taking into account the historical background, aetiological agents, prevalence, cultural and environmental factors, risk factors, pathogenesis and hygienic practices for the prevention of superficial mycoses.

Is There an Association between Keloids and Blood Groups?

Objective. The aim of the study is to investigate the possible associations between the blood groups ABO and Rhesus systems and the presence of keloids in patients with black skin. Method. This case-control study was conducted between September 2007 and August 2011 comparing dermatologic outpatients with keloids to matched controls recruited in preanesthetic consultation at Tokoin Teaching Hospital of Lomé (Togo). Results. The distribution of different ABO blood groups and Rhesus blood groups in both groups (cases versus controls) was not significantly different. This distribution of different blood groups was superimposed on the general population of blood donors at the National Blood Transfusion Center of Lomé. Univariate analysis between each blood group and the presence of keloid does not yield any statistically significant association between blood groups and presence of keloids in the subjects. Conclusion. The study shows no significant association between blood groups and the presence of keloids in our patients. Further investigation needs to be conducted to elucidate this hypothesis further by conducting multicenter studies of several ethnic groups.

A new postulate on two stages of dandruff: a clinical perspective

Dandruff (pityriasis capitis, seborrheic dermatitis confined to the scalp) is a disease that has been around for centuries despite several treatment options. Almost every day new players are entering the market with various antidandruff products, perhaps due to an increase in the incidence of dandruff all over the world. Interestingly, clinicians, especially dermatologists, gave little attention to this problem. At the end, the dandruff sufferer is puzzled by the array of antidandruff products with varied claims entering the market day by day. Why have we not achieved complete treatment success against dandruff? Is dandruff a disease or disorder? It seems that our understanding about dandruff perfectly fits into the famous saying of Albert Einstein, “as the area of light increases, so does the circumferences of darkness.” Have dermatologists left dandruff unattended, only to be exploited by the personal care industry?

Dandruff: the most commercially exploited skin disease

The article discuss in detail about the prevalence, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations of dandruff including the etio-pathology. The article also discusses in detail about various treatment methods available for dandruff. The status of dandruff being amphibious – a disease/disorder, and relatively less medical intervention is sought after for the treatment, dandruff is the most commercially exploited skin and scalp disorder/disease by personal care industries.

Grupos sanguíneos e lúpus eritematoso crônico discoide

FUNDAMENTOS: Lesão discoide é a manifestação cutânea mais comum do lúpus eritematoso, e formas cutâneas crônicas apresentam características imunológicas próprias, direcionadas ao polo Th1. Diversas doenças possuem associação com grupos sanguíneos, o que não foi ainda estudado no lúpus discoide. OBJETIVO: Investigar a associação entre tipos sanguíneos (ABO e Rh) e lúpus eritematoso discoide. MÉTODOS: Estudo prospectivo tipo transversal envolvendo tipagem sanguínea ABO e Rh, inquérito de dados clínicos e dosagem de FAN e C4 de portadores de lúpus discoide sem critérios de doença sistêmica, atendidos em hospital universitário. RESULTADOS: Foram incluídos no estudo 69 pacientes, sendo 71,0% do sexo feminino (p 1:160, em 31,9%; e níveis baixos de C4, em 8,7%. Não houve diferença significativa entre as frequências dos grupos sanguíneos dos pacientes e da população local; entretanto, o grupo A foi associado às formas disseminadas da doença (OR 4,1 e p < 0,05). CONCLUSÕES: Grupos sanguíneos de pacientes com lúpus discoide apresentam frequência semelhante à da população; porém, formas clínicas disseminadas foram mais prevalentes entre portadores do grupo A.

Placental transfer of rubella-specific IgG in fullterm and preterm newborns

OBJECTIVES

This study was undertaken to investigate placental transfer of anti-rubella IgG immunoglobulins in Iranian mothers.

METHODS

In total, 231 pregnant women and their paired infants enrolled in this study of which, 197 gave birth to fullterm and 26 gave birth to preterm infants. Rubella specific antibodies were detected by an in-house whole-virus ELISA assay in maternal and cord sera of 188 fullterm and 26 preterm infants.

RESULTS

A highly significant correlation was observed between anti-rubella IgG in newborns in total, in preterm and fullterm neonates with their paired mothers (P-values=0.0001, 0.002, 0.0001, respectively). A borderline significant difference was observed between mean anti-rubella IgG in fullterm and preterm neonates (P=0.04). Mean cord/maternal ratio of anti-rubella IgG was 0.83 which was surprisingly low. A significant lower anti-rubella IgG was observed in newborns born from mothers with blood group B+ than those born from mothers with blood groups A+ (P=0.04) and O+ (P=0.02), respectively. The same difference was observed between mean maternal anti-rubella IgG in those with blood groups B+ and A+ (P=0.04) and those with blood groups B+ and O+ (P=0.05). In addition, a low frequency of B+ blood group in high positive sera and a high frequency of this blood group among low positive and negative sera was detected.

CONCLUSIONS

Our data suggest that the main factors that influence the infants' rubella-specific IgG concentration are maternal concentration of this immunoglobulin, maternal blood group, and neonatal gestational age.

Dermatophytosis: association between ABO blood groups and reactivity to the trichophytin

The authors investigated the relationship between dermatophytosis and ABO blood groups through blood typing, identification of isolated dermatophytes and specific cellular immune response of 40 individuals carriers of this mycosis. They verified that the fungus Trichophyton rubrum, isolated from 54.5% of the patients, was more frequent in individuals belonging to blood group A. The cellular immune response, evaluated through the trichophytin antigen, was positive in 25% of the studied patients; the presence of immediate reactions (30 minutes) was verified in 35%. The blood group distribution among patients with dermatophytosis and control groups was, respectively: 47.5% X 36% in group A, 40% X 50% in group O, 12. 5% X 11% in group B. Even though the authors have found a higher number of patients belonging to blood group A infected by T. rubrum, these results suggest that there is no statistical evidence that these individuals are more susceptible to dermatophytosis.
