The atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) system in the pronephros and mesonephros of Bufo bufo larvae

In this study on the excretory apparatus of the Bufo bufo larvae, the ultrastructural features and the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP)-system were examined using cytochemical and immunocytochemical methods. The early embryonic kidney, the pronephros, is replaced by a later stage, the mesonephros. The pronephros degenerates at the time of metamorphosis and the mesonephros becomes the functional kidney in the adult. Both these organs are targets for ANP, demonstrated by the presence of the specific receptors, indirectly highlighted by the cytochemical localization of the guanylate cyclase in the presence of exogenous atrial natriuretic peptide. This study concluded that the mesonephros produces ANP and thus clusters of cells containing ANP-like granules, positive to the anti-α ANP immunolocalization, were present along the mesonephric proximal tubule. The atrial natriuretic peptide system carries out an important osmoregulatory role in the excretory apparatus.

Hormonal effect on the osmotic, electrolyte and nitrogen balance in terrestrial Amphibia

Two main hormones regulate water balance in amphibian. First, mesotocin (MT) acting as a diuretic agent, and second arginine vasotocin (AVT) being an anti-diuretic hormone. In addition, prolactin (PRL), aldosterone, corticosterone, angiotensin II and atriunatriuretic hormones, play a role too in regulating water and ion balance. The hormones affect the epidermis and bladder permeability to water and ions as well as the kidney through the control of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The main questions concern the presence and action of these hormones during the amphibian's life history. Are they present in both larval and adult stages? Are these hormones being synthesized in both aquatic and terrestrial adult phases? Under what circumstances are they being stored or released? Would the target organs (epidermis, bladder, kidney) respond in a similar way during all periods? The problem is the fact that under most circumstances an amphibian while in an aquatic environment responds physiologically differently than when on land. Only partial information concerning hormone presence, release and control of water balance is available at the moment, and even that is fragmentary and based on only a very small number of amphibian species.

Identification of immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide in bulbus arteriosus of freshwater teleostean fish

1. The presence and partial characterization of immunoreactive atrial natriuretic peptide (ir-ANP) in the bulbus arteriosus were investigated using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and radioimmunoassay (RIA) in several freshwater teleostean fish (catfish, silver crusian carp, snakehead, and rice eel). 2. The level of ir-ANP in the bulbus arteriosus was comparable with that in the atria at about 5-15 pg/mg, 6-13 pg/mg wet wt, respectively, but was 2-4-fold higher than that in the ventricles in all species observed. 3. The HPLC profile of ir-ANP showed two main peaks corresponding to low and high mol. wt rat ANPs. 4. Our results provide evidence for the presence of ir-ANP with high as well as low mol. wts in the bulbus arteriosus of freshwater teleostean fish.
