Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the correlation of contrast sensitivity with macular region ganglion cell/inner plexiform layer (GC/IPL) thickness and damage location in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) of varying severity. METHODS Cross-sectional study with 106 patients (203 eyes) who had OAG. Contrast sensitivity of each eye evaluated by quick contrast sensitivity function test based on intelligent algorithm. The GC/IPL thickness measured with optical coherence tomography; six sectors were delineated for localization of damage area. All eyes were grouped by the healthy macular sector and divided into pre-perimetric, early, moderate, and advanced stages, according to severity of visual field impairment. RESULTS Mean GC/IPL thickness in the entire macular region and each sector were correlated with parameters that reflected contrast sensitivity (p < 0.01). The structure-function correlations were stronger nasally compared with temporally, and superiorly compared with inferiorly. Eyes with normal structure in inferior temporal sector had less visual field (p' = 0.024) and macular damage (p' = 0.034) compared with eyes that had healthy superior nasal sector; there was no difference in contrast sensitivity (p = 0.898). The structure-function correlations were significant in early, moderate, and advanced glaucoma (p < 0.05) but not in pre-perimetric glaucoma (p = 0.116). CONCLUSIONS GC/IPL thinning in all sectors of the macular region in OAG was correlated with contrast sensitivity impairment, whereas the inferior temporal sector was least affected. Contrast sensitivity was supported as a severity evaluation indicator of early, moderate, and advanced glaucoma, but not of pre-perimetric glaucoma.

Abstract
Background: This study aimed to assess the differences in the average and sectoral peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL), macular ganglion cell plus inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL), and macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with pre-perimetric glaucoma (PPG) compared to those with early perimetric glaucoma (EG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Methods: A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed database, the Cochrane Library, and Embase was performed from inception to March 2021. The weighted mean difference (WMD) with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was pooled for continuous outcomes. Results: Twenty-three cross-sectional studies comprising 2,574 eyes (1,101 PPG eyes, 1,233 EG eyes, and 240 OHT eyes) were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The pooled results demonstrated that the average pRNFL (WMD = 8.22, 95% CI = 6.32–10.12, P < 0.00001), mGCIPL (WMD = 4.83, 95% CI = 3.43–6.23, P < 0.00001), and mGCC (WMD = 7.19, 95% CI = 4.52–9.85, P < 0.00001) were significantly thinner in patients with EG than in those with PPG. The sectoral thickness of pRNFL, mGCIPL, and mGCC were also significantly lower in the EG eyes. In addition, the average pRNFL and mGCC were significantly thinner in the PPG eyes than those in the OHT eyes (pRNFL: WMD = −8.57, 95% CI = −9.88 to −7.27, P < 0.00001; mGCC: WMD = −3.23, 95% CI = −6.03 to −0.44, P = 0.02). Similarly, the sectoral pRNFL and mGCC were also significantly thinner in the PPG eyes than those in the OHT eyes. Conclusion: OCT-based measurements of peripapillary and macular structural alterations can be used to distinguish PPG from EG and OHT, which can help understand the pathophysiology of glaucoma at earlier stages. Studies that employ clock hour classification methods and longitudinal studies are needed to verify our findings. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare flicker defined form (FDF) perimetry using the Heidelberg edge perimeter (HEP) with standard automated perimetry (SAP) on the Humphrey visual field (HVF) analyzer and to compare their relationship to structural measurements acquired with the Heidelberg retina tomograph. DESIGN Prospective, observational study. PARTICIPANTS Thirty-one glaucomatous eyes with varying severity and 13 normal control eyes were included in this analysis. METHODS All subjects underwent FDF testing on the HEP using the 24-2 protocol by the adaptive staircase thresholding algorithm standard strategy and SAP on the HVF analyzer 750 II using the SITA-Standard 24-2 test. Heidelberg retina tomography (HRT) testing was obtained for each patient. Spearman correlation coefficient, mean deviation (MD), and pattern standard deviation measurements by both machines were compared. RESULTS FDF and SAP MD were significantly correlated (r = 0.81, p < 0.001). FDF and SAP MD were significantly correlated with HRT cup/disc ratio (FDF MD: p < 0.001; SAP MD: p = 0.003), disc area (FDF MD: p = 0.005; SAP MD: p = 0.059), rim volume (FDF MD: p < 0.001; SAP MD: p < 0.001), and retinal nerve fibre layer (FDF MD: p < 0.001; SAP MD: p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This pilot study shows that the MD parameter of FDF correlated with SAP results. FDF and SAP had significant correlations with HRT parameters in glaucomatous and healthy eyes. The potential utility of FDF in the clinical management of glaucoma requires further investigation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the diagnostic accuracy of the pattern electroretinogram (pattern ERG) to that of standard automated perimetry (SAP), short-wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP), and frequency-doubling technology (FDT) perimetry for discriminating between healthy and glaucomatous eyes. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Eighty-three eyes of 42 healthy recruits and 92 eyes of 54 glaucoma patients (based on optic disc appearance) from the University of California, San Diego, Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study were tested with pattern ERG for glaucoma detection (PERGLA; Lace Elettronica, Pisa, Italy), SAP, SWAP, and FDT within 9 months. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated and compared for pattern ERG amplitude and SAP, SWAP, and FDT mean deviation and pattern standard deviation (PSD). Sensitivities and specificities were compared and agreement among tests was described. RESULTS The area under the ROC curve for pattern ERG amplitude was 0.744 (95% confidence interval = 0.670, 0.818). The ROC curve area was 0.786 (0.720, 0.853) for SAP PSD, 0.732 (0.659, 0.806) for SWAP PSD, and 0.818 (0.758, 0.879) for FDT PSD. At 95% specificity, sensitivities of SAP and FDT PSD were significantly higher than that of pattern ERG amplitude; at 80% specificity, similar sensitivities were observed among tests. Agreement among tests was slight to moderate. CONCLUSION The diagnostic accuracy of the pattern ERG amplitude was similar to that of SAP and SWAP, but somewhat worse than that of FDT. Nevertheless, the pattern ERG may hold some advantage over psychophysical testing because of its largely objective nature.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the most recent versions of standard automated perimetry (SAP), short-wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP), and frequency-doubling technology (FDT) using three definitions of visual field (VF) abnormality: single-test abnormality, abnormality confirmed by the same test, and abnormality confirmed by a different test. METHODS Data obtained from one eye of each of 174 patients with glaucoma and 164 age-matched healthy control subjects from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study and African Descent and Glaucoma Evaluation Study were included, based on the appearance of the optic disc on stereophotographs. Each participant had two reliable 24-2 SAP-SITA, SWAP-SITA, and Matrix FDT tests. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated for the PSD of each test to equate the tests at 90% and 95% specificity. SAP, SWAP, and FDT were compared under each definition of VF abnormality by assessing the sensitivities, the agreement between tests and the overlap in deficit location at these set specificities. The tests were also compared using the machine-derived PSD. RESULTS At a set specificity of 95%, single-test sensitivities of 30% (SAP), 29% (SWAP), and 28% (FDT) were observed (all P > 0.05). Sensitivities ranged from 24% to 27% (all P > 0.05) when same-test confirmation was used and from 20% to 23% (all P > 0.05) when different-test confirmation was used. SAP/SAP sensitivity was higher than all different-test combinations (all P < 0.05), and SWAP/FDT sensitivity was lower than all same-test combinations (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Confirming VF abnormality is important and optimal when an abnormal SAP is confirmed by a subsequent SAP or SWAP test.
