Thrombocytopenia with absent radii (TAR) syndrome is a rare genetic condition causing absent radial bones and thrombocytopenia. Management is generally supportive although there may be a role for platelet-stimulating agents such as romiplostim. In this case, we highlight the obstacles in managing end-stage heart failure in a patient with TAR syndrome.

Thrombocytopenia absent radius (TAR) syndrome: a case report and review for oral health care providers

Thrombocytopenia Absent Radius (TAR) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by thrombocytopenia and bilateral absence of radii with both thumbs present. Multiple organ systems may be affected in patients with TAR syndrome, including hematologic, skeletal, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems. This article describes a 35-year-old Caucasian male with TAR syndrome receiving comprehensive dental care and reviews the pertinent aspects of this disease, as well as dental management considerations, for patients with TAR syndrome.

Mitral valve repair in a patient with thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome: case report

Thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome (TAR) is a rare genetic disorder consisting of skeletal abnormalities and thrombocytopenia. In this report, we present the management strategy for a 23-year-old female patient with TAR syndrome who underwent mitral valve repair.

Inherited thrombocytopenia: when a low platelet count does not mean ITP

Congenital thrombocytopenias, once considered rare and obscure conditions, are today recognized with increasing frequency, especially due to the measurement of platelet number as part of routine blood testing. The clinical spectrum of congenital thrombocytopenia ranges from severe bleeding diatheses, recognized within the first few weeks of life, to mild conditions that may remain undetected even in adulthood. For the latter group of diseases, distinguishing between inherited (primary) and acquired (secondary) thrombocytopenia, especially immune thrombocytopenia purpura (ITP), is essential to avoid unnecessary and potentially harmful treatments. In this review, the congenital thrombocytopenia syndromes are discussed with specific attention focused on diagnostic criteria, clinical presentations, genetic etiology, and current medical management. The mutated genes responsible for each syndrome are reviewed as well as the potential implications for using gene therapy or gene repair in the future.

Prenatal diagnosis of thrombocytopenia absent radius (TAR) syndrome and vaginal delivery

A fetus with bilateral radial aplasia was identified on routine ultrasound. The diagnosis of thrombocytopenia absent radius (TAR) syndrome was confirmed with cordocentesis. The differential diagnosis of radial aplasia and prenatal tests available to assist with management are discussed. Cordocentesis offered useful information in the management of this case for both diagnosis and in deciding the route of delivery. We believe our case represents the first prenatal diagnosis of TAR syndrome in which vaginal delivery of a liveborn infant was intentionally allowed. Caesarean delivery may not be necessary for all fetuses diagnosed with TAR syndrome.
