The Effect of Two-Generation Exposure to a High-Fat Diet on Craniofacial Morphology in Rats

This study aimed to examine the sexual dimorphism effect of two-generation exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) on the craniofacial growth of rat offspring. Ten eleven-week-old pregnant Wistar rats were fed either a control or HFD from day 7 of pregnancy until the end of lactation. Twelve male and female offspring from the control-diet-fed mothers were assigned to the CM (control male, n = 6) and CF (control female, n = 6) groups. The other twelve from the HFD-fed mothers were assigned to the HFD male (HFDM, n = 6) and HFD female (HFDF, n = 6) groups. HFDM and HFDF rats continued with an HFD. The offspring's weight and fasting blood sugar levels were measured every two weeks. The craniofacial and dental morphologies were studied from lateral X-rays of the head at ten weeks old. The HFDM rats showed an increased body weight and larger neurocranial parameters compared with the CM group. Furthermore, there were slightly significant differences in body weight and viscerocranial parameters between the rats in the HFDF and CF groups. In conclusion, two-generational exposure to an HFD had a greater effect on the male offspring's body weight and craniofacial morphology.

Adult characteristics of survivors of early life malnutrition in an impoverished population

BACKGROUND & AIMS

To determine the characteristics of adults who survived early life malnutrition (ELM) and the possible associated factors. The setting is an impoverished community in Kenya. The coastal region of Kenya has a high prevalence of acute protein-energy-malnutrition and stunting.

METHODS

Observational cross-sectional survey where 872 skeletally mature adults of African origin, were surveyed in a period of three months. A discrimination tool to detect ELM survivors was created. Personal, historical and family data were collected in a semi-structured questionnaire. Various observations and body measurements were done. The subjects were grouped into two, those with ELM (Group1), and those without (Group2).

RESULTS

Group1 had 242 participants, 49.8% males, mean age of 49.1 ± 8.7 years. Group2 had 630 participants, 48.3% males, mean age 41.0 ± 9.7 years. The phenotypic characteristics included height, BMI, and head circumference (P < 0.05). Developmental characteristics were duration of schooling, occupation and income (P < 0.001). Factors associated with malnutrition were County of origin, parental education, parental occupation, and family size (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

There are discernible phenotypic and developmental characteristics associated with adult survivors of ELM. The predisposing factors for ELM are location of birth, parental education and occupation, and family size.

Elliptical Fourier descriptors of outline and morphological analysis in caudal view of foramen magnum of the tropical raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus) (Linnaeus, 1758)

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate sexual-size dimorphism and attempt at categorization of inter-individual shapes of foramen magnum outlines using Fourier descriptors which allow for shape outline evaluations with a resultant specimen character definition.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Individual characterization and quantification of foramen magnum shapes in direct caudal view based on elliptical Fourier technique was applied to 46 tropical raccoon skulls (26 females, 20 males).

RESULTS

Incremental number of harmonics demonstrates morphological contributions of such descriptors with their relations to specific anatomical constructions established. The initial harmonics (1st to 3rd) described the general foramen shapes while the second (4th to 12th) demonstrated fine morphological details. Sexual-size dimorphism was observed in females (87.1%) and 91.7% in males, normalization of size produces 75% in females and 83% in males. With respect to foramen magnum dimorphism analysis, the result obtained through elliptic Fourier analysis was comparatively better in detail information of outline contours than earlier classical methods. The first four effective principal components defined 70.63% of its shape properties while the rest (22.51%) constituted fine details of morphology.

CONCLUSION

Both size and shape seems important in sexual dimorphisms in this species, this investigation suggest clinical implications, taxonomic and anthropologic perspectives in foramen characterization magnum characterization and further postulates an increased possibility of volume reduction cerebellar protrusion, ontogenic magnum shape irregularities in the sample population with neurologic consequences especially among females.

The "polymorphous" history of a polymorphous skull bone: the sphenoid

For a long time, because of its location at the skull base level, the sphenoid bone was rather mysterious as it was too difficult for anatomists to reach and to elucidate its true configuration. The configuration of the sphenoid bone led to confusion regarding its sutures with the other skull bones, its shape, its detailed anatomy, and the vascular and nervous structures that cross it. This article takes the reader on a journey through time and space, charting the evolution of anatomists’ comprehension of sphenoid bone morphology from antiquity to its conception as a bone structure in the eighteenth century, and ranging from ancient Greece to modern Italy and France. The journey illustrates that many anatomists have attempted to name and to best describe the structural elements of this polymorphous bone.

Maternal protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation affects the development of muscle fibers and neuromuscular junctions in rats

INTRODUCTION

A balanced maternal diet is a determining factor in normal fetal development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of maternal protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation on muscle fiber and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) morphology of rat offspring at 21 days of age.

METHODS

Wistar rats were divided into a control group (CG), offspring of mothers fed a normal protein diet (17%), and a restricted group (RG), offspring of mothers fed a low-protein diet (6%). After a period of lactation, the animals were euthanized, and soleus muscles were obtained from pups for analysis.

RESULTS

The soleus muscles of the RG exhibited an increase of 133% in the number of fibers and of 79% in the amount of nuclei. Moreover, the number of NMJs was lower in the restricted group than in the CG.

CONCLUSIONS

Maternal protein restriction alters the normal development of the neuromuscular system. Muscle Nerve 55: 109-115, 2017.

A three-dimensional skull ontogeny in the bobcat (Lynx rufus) (Carnivora: Felidae): a comparison with other carnivores

The maturation of mammalian carnivores from a lactating juvenile to a predatory adult requires a suite of changes in both morphology and behaviour. Bobcats (Lynx rufus (Schreber, 1777)) are medium-sized cats with well-developed skulls to process large prey that can exceed their body mass. An integrated view of the skull ontogeny in the bobcat was developed to detect the relationship between shape, size (on the basis of three-dimensional geometric morphometric analysis), and life history. Dietary changes from juvenile to adults were taken into account and compared with other carnivores. Newborns were different from the remaining age stages in the behavioral and morphological characters examined, which allows us to relate them to the terminal morphology reached during the prenatal period. All findings were related to the reinforcement of the skull and the enhancement of predatory skills in adult bobcats. The final cranial shape is reached in A2 age class, after 2 years of age, and once sexual maturity has been reached. This is a pattern not followed for the rest of carnivores previously studied, which might be related to the capacity of subduing prey that exceed them in size, a behavior not common in felids of the body size of bobcats.

The vertebral column, ribs, and sternum of the African giant rat (Cricetomys gambianus waterhouse)

Examined bones were obtained from eight adult African giant rats, Cricetomys gambianus Waterhouse. Animals used had an average body mass of 730.00 ± 41.91 gm and body length of 67.20 ± 0.05 cm. The vertebral formula was found to be C₇, T₁₃, L₆, S₄, Ca_31–36. The lowest and highest points of the cervicothoracic curvature were at C₅ and T₂, respectively. The spinous process of the axis was the largest in the cervical group while others were sharp and pointed. The greatest diameter of the vertebral canal was at the atlas (0.8 cm) and the lowest at the caudal sacral bones (2 mm). The diameter of the vertebral foramen was the largest at C₁ and the smallest at the S₄; the foramina were negligibly indistinct caudal to the sacral vertebrae. There were 13 pairs of ribs. The first seven pairs were sternal, and six pairs were asternal of which the last 2-3 pairs were floating ribs. The sternum was composed of deltoid-shaped manubrium sterni, four sternebrae, and a slender processus xiphoideus. No sex-related differences were observed. The vertebral column is adapted for strong muscular attachment and actions helping the rodent suited for speed, agility, dexterity, and strength which might enable it to overpower prey and escape predation.

Effect of excessive methionine on the development of the cranial growth plate in newborn rats

OBJECTIVE

Methionine is an essential amino acid and pivotal for normal growth and development. However, previous animal studies have shown that excessive maternal intake of methionine causes growth restrictions, organ damages, and abnormal growth of the mandible in newborn animals. However, the effect of excessive methionine on the development of the cranial growth plate is unknown. This study investigated histological alterations of the cranial growth plate induced by high methionine administration in newborn rats.

DESIGN

Twenty pregnant dams were divided into a control and an experimental group. The controls received a diet for rats and the experimental group was fed from the 18th gestational day with a special manufactured high methionine diet for rats. The high methionine diet was maintained until the end of the lactation phase (day 20). The offspring of both groups were killed at day 10 or 20 postnatally and their spheno-occipital synchondroses were collected for histological analysis.

RESULTS

The weight of the high-dose methionine treated experimental group was considerably reduced in comparison to the control group at day 10 and 20 postnatally. The cartilaginous area of the growth plate and the height of the proliferative zone were markedly reduced at postnatal day 10 in the experimental group.

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, the diet-induced hypermethioninemia in rat dams resulted in growth retardations and histomorphological changes of the spheno-occipital synchondrosis, an important craniofacial growth centre in newborns. This finding may elucidate facial dysmorphoses reported in patients suffering from hypermethioninemia.
