Abstract
Background In Uganda, similar to other countries in East Africa, the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has been steadily increasing. This increase in incidence is accompanied by a poor prognosis. There is limited knowledge on factors responsible for the poor outcome of patients with CRC in Uganda. Cancer survival analysis is one way of determining some of these prognostic factors. The aim of this study was to determine prognostic factors associated with CRC survival in Ugandan patients. Methods This was a retroprospective cohort study involving patients with linked data in the Kampala cancer registry and medical records from hospitals in Uganda. Participants with a diagnosis of colorectal adenocarcinoma between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2018 were included. Variables included patients’ demographic data, grade, stage and location of CRC, data on whether a patient was operated on, type of operation, treatment modalities and date of diagnosis. Our outcome variable was time to death after diagnosis. We computed and compared survival using the Log rank test and used Cox proportional hazards regression to determine factors associated with survival. Results A total of 247 patients were included in the study with a mean (SD) age of 53.3 (15.7) years and a female: male ratio of 1.14:1. The proportions of patients surviving at 1, 2 and 3 years were 65.2% (95% CI: 58.8–70.9), 42.0% (95% CI:35.6–48.3) and 33.3% (95% CI:27.3–39.4) respectively. In multivariate analysis, factors associated with increased mortality included clinical stage II (aHR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.10–5.41, p=0.028), stage III (aHR=2.65, 95% CI: 1.31–5.39, p=0.007) and stage IV (aHR=5.47, 95% CI: 2.40–12.48, p<0.001). Curative surgery alone (aHR=0.63, 95% CI: 0.39–1.01, p=0.057) and curative surgery with chemotherapy (aHR=0.53, 95% CI: 0.32–0.88, p=0.015) were associated with a better survival. Conclusion The survival rate among CRC patients in Uganda is low. Advanced stage CRC accelerates mortality, while surgery alone or in combination with chemotherapy improves survival. Implementation of national screening programmes for early diagnosis of CRC and increasing surgery and oncology infrastructure is recommended to improve the CRC survival rate in the Ugandan population.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of PET/CT imaging performed with 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI and 18FDG in detection of liver metastases in patients with gastrointestinal system (GIS) cancer. METHODS A total of 31 patients who underwent 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI and 18F-FDG PET/CT examinations and diagnosed with GIS cancer (15 colorectal, 9 pancreas, 4 stomach and 3 other cancers) were included in the study. The presence of liver metastasis was decided based on histopathologic diagnosis, PET/CT, other radiologic examinations or tumor biomarker findings, and both PET/CT imaging findings were compared on the patient and lesion basis. RESULTS Of the 31 patients, 28 were found as true positive with 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI-PET/CT and 17 with 18FDG-PET/CT. Of the 98 metastatic liver lesions determined according to our diagnostic criteria, 92 were found as true positive lesions with 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI-PET/CT and 65 with 18FDG-PET/CT. There was a statistically significant difference between both imaging modalities in the patient and lesion based comparisons (p < 0.05). When semiquantitative values (SUVmax, mlr) obtained from the lesions were compared between the two imaging methods, mlr values showed statistically significant difference in all tumor subgroups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION It was concluded that 68Ga-DOTA-FAPI-PET/CT was superior over 18FDG-PET/CT in detection of liver metastases of GIS cancers and it can be a complementary method especially in negative cases with 18FDG-PET/CT.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. The number of elderly patients with CRC increases due to aging of the population. There are few studies that examined chemotherapy and prognostic factors in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients aged ≥ 80 years. We assessed the efficacy of chemotherapy and prognostic factors among patients with mCRC aged ≥ 80 years. Methods We retrospectively analyzed clinical and laboratory findings of 987 patients newly diagnosed with CRC at Asahi General Hospital (Chiba, Japan) between January 2012 and December 2016. The Kaplan–Meier method was used for the overall survival (OS) and the log-rank test was used to identify difference between patients. A multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to determine the hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of prognostic factors among super-elderly patients. Results In total, 260 patients were diagnosed with mCRC (super-elderly group: n = 43, aged ≥ 80 years and younger group, n = 217, aged < 80 years). The performance status and nutritional status were worse in the super-elderly group than in the younger group. The OS of super-elderly patients who received chemotherapy was worse than that of younger patients (18.5 vs. 28.8 months; P = 0.052), although the difference was not significant. The OS of patients who received chemotherapy tended to be longer than that of those who did not; however, there were no significant differences in OS in the super-elderly group (18.5 vs. 8.4 months P = 0.33). Multivariate analysis revealed that carcinoembryonic antigen levels ≥ 5 ng/mL (hazard ratio: 2.27; 95% CI 1.09–4.74; P = 0.03) and prognostic nutritional index ≤ 35 (hazard ratio: 8.57; 95% CI 2.63–27.9; P = 0.0003) were independently associated with poor OS in the super-elderly group. Conclusions Patients with mCRC aged ≥ 80 years had lower OS than younger patients even though they received chemotherapy. Carcinoembryonic antigen and prognostic nutritional index were independent prognostic factors in super-elderly patients with mCRC, but chemotherapy was not. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has been shown to be prognostic value for many types of cancer of the gastrointestinal system. However, there are limited data on its value for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of PNI in newly diagnosed mCRC patients. METHODS The data of 468 patients who had been admitted to our center upon being diagnosed with mCRC between January 2010 and December 2017 were reviewed retrospectively, whereby satisfying the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used for PNI's optimum cut-off value for overall survival (OS). The Cox regression model was used in the single-variable analysis in order to test whether or not variables with prognostic properties were independent prognostic factors. FINDINGS A total of 308 patients were included in the study. Sixty-two percent (n = 192) of the patients were males, and the median age was 57.5 years (range: 25-83). Forty-five percent (n = 137) of the patients had KRAS mutation. Tumors localized in the colon accounted for 63% (n = 193) of the patients. The liver was the most common region of metastasis at 69%. According to the ROC curve, the optimal cut-off value for PNI was 46 (sensitivity 74%, specificity 47%, AUC 0.615, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54-0.68, P = .002). One hundred and eighty-two patients (59%) fell into the PNI-High (> 46) group, while 126 patients (41%) fell into the PNI-Low (≤ 46) group. The rectum localization was higher, whereas the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio were lower in the PNI-High group. There was no difference in terms of other patient characteristics. The median OS was significantly longer in the PNI-High group compared to the PNI-Low group (28.4 vs 19.1 months, P < .001). The Cox regression analysis showed that a high PNI was an independent positive prognostic factor (hazard ratio: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.42-0.87, P = .007). DISCUSSION We found PNI to be an independent prognostic factor in mCRC. We think that PNI, which can be calculated by a simple formula, may provide clinicians important clues in order to make desicion for individual treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Matrix Gla protein (MGP) is a vitamin K-dependent, γ-carboxylated protein that was initially found to be a physiological inhibitor of ectopic calcifications affecting mainly cartilage and the vascular system. Mutations in the MGP gene were found to be responsible for a human pathology, the Keutel syndrome, characterized by abnormal calcifications in cartilage, lungs, brain and vascular system. MGP was recently implicated in tumorigenic processes such as angiogenesis and shown to be abnormally regulated in several tumors, including cervical, ovarian, urogenital and breast. This fact has triggered our interest in analyzing the expression of MGP and of its regulator, the transcription factor runt related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), in colorectal cancer (CRC). METHODS MGP and RUNX2 expression were analyzed in cancer and non-tumor biopsies samples from 33 CRC patients and 9 healthy controls by RT-qPCR. Consequently, statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the clinical-pathological significance of MGP and RUNX2 in CRC. MGP protein was also detected by immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS Showed an overall overexpression of MGP in the tumor mucosa of patients at mRNA level when compared to adjacent normal mucosa and healthy control tissues. In addition, analysis of the expression of RUNX2 mRNA demonstrated an overexpression in CRC tissue samples and a positive correlation with MGP expression (Pearson correlation coefficient 0.636; p ≤ 0.01) in tumor mucosa. However correlations between MGP gene expression and clinical-pathological characteristics, such as gender, age and pathology classification did not provide relevant information that may shed light towards the differences of MGP expression observed between normal and malignant tissue. CONCLUSIONS We were able to associate the high levels of MGP mRNA expression with a worse prognosis and survival rate lower than five years. These results contributed to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying MGP deregulation in cancer.

Abstract
Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in both men and women. In most Asian countries, both the incidence and mortality rates of CRC are gradually increasing. In Brunei Darussalam, CRC ranks first and second in lifetime risk among men and women respectively. This study aims to report the overall survival rates and associated factors of CRC in Brunei Darussalam. Methods: This is a retrospective study examining CRC data for the period 2007 to 2017 retrieved from a population based cancer registry in Brunei Darussalam. A total of 728 patients were included in the analysis. Kaplan Meier method was used to estimate survival rates. Univariate analysis using log-rank test was used to examine the differences in survival between groups. Multivariate analysis using Cox PH regression was used to estimate hazard of death and obtain significant predictors that influence CRC patients’ survival. Results: The median survival time for colorectal, colon and rectal cancer patients were 57.0, 85.8 and 40.0 months respectively. The overall 1-, 3- and 5- year survival rates for CRC patients were 78.0%, 57.7% and 49.6% respectively. In univariate analysis, age at diagnosis, ethnicity, cancer stage, tumour location and histology were found to have significant difference in CRC patients’ survival. In the Cox PH analysis, older age (≥70 years), cancer stage, ethnicity and other histological type were determined as associated factors of CRC patients’ survival. Conclusion: This study found the overall 5-year survival rate of CRC in Brunei Darussalam is similar to that in some Asian countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. However, more efforts need to be carried out in order to raise awareness of CRC and improve the survival of CRC patients.

Abstract
Objective. Assessment of the impact of National Program «Health» on a rectal cancer (RC) tumor-specific survival in the Arkhangelsk region (AR), Russia over the period 2000–2017 by the data of Arkhangelsk Regional Cancer Registry (ARCR)Materials and methods. Anonymized data on all cases of RC (C19.0–C21.0) in the AR in 2000–2017 were extracted from the database of the ARCR. Over the study period, 4173 cases of the RC were selected. To assess the impact of the National Health Project in 2006 and All-national Dispensarization in 2013, the three time periods were chosen — 2000–2006, 2007–2012 and 2013–2017. Cancer-specific survival (CSS) was calculated. Separate influence of baseline factors on differences in CSS between periods was performed using Cox regression with consecutive input.Results. One- and five year CSS were 62,6% (95% confidence interval (CI) 60,03–65,05%%) and 27,8% (95% CI 25,4–30,2%) in 2000–2006, 65,1% (95% CI 62,5–67,5%) and 32% (95% CI 29,5–34,5%) in 2007–2012, 67,7% (95% CI 65,2–70,1%) and 37,4% (95% CI 33,7–41,1%) in 2013–2017, respectively.In univariate analysis the risk of death in the latest time periods was significantly lower: HR 0.86 (95% CI 0.79–0.95), p < 0.05 and 0.74 (95% CI 0.67–0.82), p<0.0001 for 2007–2012 and 2013–2017, respectively, comparing to 2000–2006. In a multivariate model only correction for treatment type has led to change of the coefficients between time periods: HR 0.94 (95% CI 0.86–1.03) and 0.84 (95% CI 0.75–0.93) for 2007–2012 and 2013–2017, respectively. The CSS was also independently influenced by stage, age at diagnosis, place of residence and type of treatment.Conclusion. Population-based five-year CSS of patients with RC increased by 8% during the analyzed period. Better CSS in the latest time period is associated rather with improvement of treatment than earlier detection of RC.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the commonest cancers associated with diverse prognosis times in different parts of the world. Despite medical interventions, the overall clinical outcomes and survival remains very poor for most patients in developing countries. This study therefore investigated the survival rate of colorectal cancer and its prognostic factors among patients at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Ghana. Methodology In this retrospective cohort study, a total of 221 patients diagnosed with CRC from 2009 to 2015 at the Surgical and Oncological units of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Kumasi, Ghana were employed. The survival graphs were obtained using the Kaplan–Meier method and compared by the Log-rank test. Cox regression analysis was used to assess prognostic factors. All analyses were performed by SPSS version 22. Results The median survival time was 15 months 95% CI (11.79–18.21). The overall survival rate for CRC over the 5 years period was 16.0%. The survival rates at the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th years were 64% 95% CI (56.2–71.1), 40% 95% CI (32.2–50.1), 21% 95% CI (11.4–30.6) 16% 95% CI (8.9–26.9) and 16% 95% CI (7.3–24.9). There was a significant difference in the survival rate of colorectal cancer according to the different stages (p = 0.0001). Family history [HR = (3.44), p = 0.029)], Chemotherapy [HR = (0.23), p = <0.0001)], BMI [HR = (1.78), p = 0.017)] and both chemo/radiotherapy (HR = (3.63), p = 0.042)] were the significant social and clinical factors influencing the overall survival. Pathological factors such as TNM tumour stage (p = 0.012), depth of tumour invasion (p = 0.036), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.0001), and distance metastasis (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with overall survival. Conclusion The study has clearly demonstrated that survival rate for CRC patients at KATH, Ghana is very low in a 5 years period. This is influenced by significant number of clinical and pathological prognostic factors. Identification of prognostic factors would be a primary basis for early prediction and treatment of patients with colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Background: To establish a prognostic score based on clinical routine factors to stratify nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with bone metastasis into risk groups with different survival rates. Materials and Methods: Total 276 patients from multicenter were retrospectively analyzed. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression were used to confirm independent risk factors, which were checked for internal validity by bootstrapping method. The prognostic score, deriving from the corresponding regression coefficients in Cox model, classified patients into low and high risk groups. Finally, two independent cohorts were used for external validation. Results: In development cohort, six risk factors were identified: age>46 year-old (point=1), N>0 stage (point=2), anemia (point=2), bone metastasis free interval≤12 months (point=1), without radiotherapy to primary sites (point=1), and without radiotherapy to first metastasis sites (point=1). The derived prognostic score divided patients into low (score, 0-4) and high (score, 5-8) risk groups, with highly significant differences of 5-year overall survival rates (high vs. low risk: 24.6% vs. 58.2%, HR 3.47, P<0.001). Two external validations presented congruent results. Conclusion: A feasible and applicative prognostic score was successfully established and validated to discriminate bone metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma into low/high risk groups, which will be useful for individual treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Oligometastatic disease can potentially be cured when an optimal approach is performed. Early recurrence after liver resection is an intractable problem, and the clinical implications remain unknown in colorectal liver oligometastases (CLOM) patients. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and prognosis related to early recurrence in these patients. METHODS A total of 307 consecutive patients with CLOM undergoing curative liver resection were retrospectively reviewed between September 1999 and June 2016. Early recurrence was defined as any recurrence or death from CLOM that occurred within 6 months of liver resection. RESULTS With a median follow-up time of 31.7 months, the 3-year overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival rates were 68.7 and 42.5%, respectively. Forty-nine (16.0%) patients developed early recurrence and showed a poorer 3-year OS than those with non-early recurrence (22.3 vs. 75.8%, P < 0.001) or later recurrence (22.3 vs. 52.8 vs. 63.2%, P < 0.001). Moreover, early recurrence was identified as an independent predictor of 3-year OS [hazard ratio (HR) 6.282; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.980-9.915, P < 0.001]. In multivariate analysis, a node-positive primary tumor [odds ratio (OR) 2.316; 95% CI 1.097-4.892, P = 0.028) and metastatic diameter > 3 cm (OR 2.560; 95% CI 1.290-5.078; P = 0.007) were shown to be risk factors for early recurrence. The salvage liver resection rate for patients with early recurrence was significantly lower than that for patients with later recurrence (4.1 vs. 19.7%, P = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS Early recurrence should be investigated in routine clinical practice, even in patients with CLOM after curative liver resection. Detailed preoperative comprehensive measurements might help stratify high-risk patients, and a non-surgical treatment for early recurrence might represent an effective alternative.

Abstract
Objectives. To estimate the survival rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) and determine its predictors among Jordanian patients who were diagnosed in the period of 2005–2010. Methods. This study was based on Jordan cancer registry. All CRC cases that were registered in cancer registry during 2005–2010 were analyzed using the survival analysis. The last date for follow-up was 1st Oct 2016. Results. A total of 3005 patients with CRC were registered during 2005–2010. The overall 5-year and 10-year survival rates for patients with CRC were 58.2% and 51.8%, respectively. The 5-year survival rate decreased significantly from 60.4% for the age <50 years to 49.3% for the age ≥70 years (p < 0.005). The 5-year survival rate was 72.1% for the localized stage, 53.8% for the regional stage, and 22.6% for the distant metastasis. In the multivariate analysis, the only factors that were significantly associated with survival were age, grade, stage, and location of tumor. Conclusions. The overall 5-year and ten-year survival rates for CRC were 58.2% and 51.8%, respectively. Increased age, poor differentiation, advanced cancer stage, and right-sided cancers were associated with lower survival rates. Screening strategies are needed for early detection of colon adenomas and colorectal cancer in Jordan.

Abstract
There is discrepancy and failure to adhere to current international guidelines for the management of metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) in hospitals in Greece and Cyprus. The aim of the present document is to provide a consensus on the multidisciplinary management of metastastic CRC, considering both special characteristics of our Healthcare System and international guidelines. Following discussion and online communication among the members of an executive team chosen by the Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology (HeSMO), a consensus for metastastic CRC disease was developed. Statements were subjected to the Delphi methodology on two voting rounds by invited multidisciplinary international experts on CRC. Statements reaching level of agreement by ≥80% were considered as having achieved large consensus, whereas statements reaching 60-80% moderate consensus. One hundred and nine statements were developed. Ninety experts voted for those statements. The median rate of abstain per statement was 18.5% (range: 0-54%). In the end of the process, all statements achieved a large consensus. The importance of centralization, care by a multidisciplinary team, adherence to guidelines, and personalization is emphasized. R0 resection is the only intervention that may offer substantial improvement in the oncological outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to assess the relationship between intestinal obstruction and the prognosis of colorectal carcinoma. METHODS Data pertaining to 4,501 colorectal carcinoma patients were extracted from the national colorectal registry and analysed. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The log-rank test was used to compare the survival rate between patients with intestinal obstruction and those without intestinal obstruction. The p-values<0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Simple Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to estimate the crude hazard ratio of mortality from colorectal cancer. RESULTS Intestinal obstruction was reported in more than 13% of patients. The 3-year survival rate after treatment was 48.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 43.9 to 52.8) for patients with intestinal obstruction (n=593) and 54.9% (95% CI, 53.1 to 56.6) for patients without intestinal obstruction (n=3,908). The 5-year survival rate for patients with intestinal obstruction was 37.3% (95% CI, 31.9 to 42.8), which was lower than that of patients without intestinal obstruction (45.6%; 95% CI, 43.5 to 47.7). After adjusting the hazard ratio for other prognostic variables, intestinal obstruction had a statistically significant negative correlation with the survival rate of colorectal cancer patients, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.22 (p=0.008). CONCLUSIONS The presence of intestinal obstruction is associated with a lower survival rate among colorectal cancer patients.

Abstract
Treatment of colorectal cancer is becoming more uniform, with wider acceptance of standardized guidelines. However, areas of controversy exist where the appropriate treatment is not clear, including: should a segmental colectomy or a more extensive resection be performed in hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer? should an asymptomatic primary cancer be resected in the presence of unresectable metastatic disease? what is the role of extended lymph node resection in colon and rectal cancer? are there clinically significant benefits for a robotic approach to colorectal resection versus a laparoscopic approach? This chapter will examine these issues and discuss how they may be resolved.

Abstract
PURPOSE Nutrition and immunity significantly affect the progression of cancer in cancer patients. Therefore, the evaluation of the nutritional and immune status would be useful as a prognostic factor and to determine the optimal treatment strategy for patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer who are receiving chemotherapy. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of the nutritional and immune status in patients with unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer treated with chemotherapy. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 80 patients with colorectal cancer. A total of 22 patients had metachronous unresectable cancer, and 58 patients had synchronous unresectable cancer. All patients underwent combination chemotherapy with oxaliplatin or irinotecan plus 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin as first-line chemotherapy. We then examined the correlations between the Onodera's prognostic nutritional index (OPNI) and the patients' clinicopathological features. The OPNI was calculated as follows: 10 × serum albumin (g/dl) + 0.005 × total lymphocyte count (per mm(3)). According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the cutoff value for OPNI was 44.5. RESULTS Patients with a pretreatment OPNI of ≧44.5 demonstrated a longer OS than those with a pretreatment OPNI of <44.5. Moreover, we categorized these patients into four groups according to the combination of the pre- and post-treatment OPNI. The patients in the group with both OPNIs ≥44.5 exhibited a better prognosis compared to the other group (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION The OPNI is considered to be a useful marker for predicting the long-term outcome in patients who receive chemotherapy for unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1) polymorphism has been proven to be associated with risks of several cancers. However, previous studies on the association between GSTM1 polymorphism and colorectal cancer risk in Chinese population reported controversial results. We performed a meta-analysis of 13 studies which were identified through the literature search in PubMed and Wanfang databases. The strength of the association between GSTM1 polymorphism and colorectal cancer risk was measured by odds ratio (OR) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI). Overall, GSTM1 null mutation was significantly associated with a risk of colorectal cancer in Chinese population (OR = 1.37, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.68, P = 0.002). Sensitivity analyses by omitting those studies in turns did not materially alter the overall pooled ORs. The cumulative meta-analyses further showed a trend of an obvious association between GSTM1 null mutation and risk of colorectal cancer in Chinese population as information accumulated by year. The findings from our meta-analysis suggest that GSTM1 null mutation is significantly associated with a risk of colorectal cancer in Chinese population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common malignancy in the Saudi population. This study aimed to review CRC data from the Saudi Cancer Registry (SCR) in order to evaluate the prognostic factors for CRC survival in Saudi patients. METHODS This study was a retrospective censored overall survival (OS) analysis of CRC data for the period 1994-2004 obtained from the SCR. Data were collected from all 13 administrative regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) by the SCR in collaboration with the National Information Center of the Ministry of Interior. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to calculate the cumulative survival rate, which was then stratified by gender and by period (1994-1999 versus 2000-2004). The clinico-pathological variables that might affect CRC survival were analyzed by Cox regression analysis. RESULTS Between 1994 and 2004, 549 CRC cases were diagnosed (363 [66.1%] in males and 186 [33.9%] in females). The OS for CRC during this period was 44.6% (44.7% for 1994-1999 and 44.3% for 2000-2004 [p=0.7]). There was a significant (p=0.003) discrepancy of 9.6% between the male five-year OS (41.0%) and the female five-year OS (50.6%). The five-year OS was 63.3% for patients with localized disease, 50.2% for those with regional disease, and 14.7% for patients with metastases. By Cox regression analysis, age and extent were significant prognostic factors of survival in patients with colon cancer; the risk was higher in patients with distant metastasis (hazard ratio [HR], 2.53; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-5.45; p=0.01). In patients with rectal cancer, the risk was lower in males (HR, 0.66; CI, 0.45-0.98; p=0.04), but higher in patients with unknown tumor extent (HR, 3.70; 95% CI, 1.66-8.24; p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS The five-year OS for 1994-2004 was 44.6% for patients with CRC. More so, five-year OS based on CRC stage was generally lower than the typically reported survival rates. The establishment of a national screening program and increased access to specialized medical faculties may be necessary to improve CRC survival in the KSA.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is a rapidly rising trend in Asia. The incidence in many Asian countries is on par with the West. Several studies have provided data regarding the survival of patients with colorectal cancer. In Asia, the overall cure rate of colorectal cancer has not improved dramatically in the last decade, 5-year survival remaining at approximately 60%. Colorectal cancer survival time has increased in recent years, but mortality rate remains high. Although studies have determined a number of factors that can predict survival of patients after diagnosis, life expectancy has not been increased dramatically. It seems that among the prognostic factors explored so far, the most important are those that relate to early diagnosis of cancer. Primary detection is feasible since efficient screening modalities are available. Colonoscopic surveillance is needed, especially in subjects at higher risk.
