Ultrasonography of Parasitic Diseases in Domestic Animals: A Systematic Review

The aim of this literature review was to summarize the current knowledge on the application of ultrasonography in diagnosis, staging and monitoring of helminthic diseases in domestic animals. We selected and analyzed 122 papers about the application of ultrasonography in parasitic disease in ruminants, equids, swine, and companion animals. Helminths can be recognized in ultrasound images by their morphology, size, and location. In some cases, the parasites are not directly seen by ultrasound, but the lesions caused by them can be easily visualized. Ultrasound imaging is taking on an increasingly important role in veterinary parasitology.

Abstract

The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on the application of ultrasonography in diagnosis, staging and monitoring of helminthic diseases in domestic animals. Only peer reviewed papers written in English language were included in this systematic review. All papers concerning unicellular parasites, wild animals, non-domestic experimental animals, or ex vivo or in vitro applications of ultrasonography were excluded from the review. A total of 122 papers met the inclusion criteria. Among them 47% concerned nematodes, 37% cestodes, and 16% trematodes with the genus Dirofilaria, Echinococcus, and Fasciola the most represented, respectively. Helminths can be recognized in ultrasound images by their morphology, size, and location. In some cases, the parasite stages are not directly seen by ultrasound, but the lesions caused by them can be easily visualized. Ultrasound imaging is taking on an increasingly important role in the diagnosis, staging, monitoring, and control of parasitic diseases in veterinary medicine. However, it cannot replace the clinical approach and the diagnostic tests commonly used in veterinary parasitology.

Ophthalmologic Diseases of Small Mammals

Ophthalmic examination of small mammals follows the same principles as in other species. Reference values for tear production and intraocular pressure are provided. Conjunctivitis and epiphora is common in rabbits. Numerous infectious organisms have been isolated from rabbits with conjunctivitis. Dental disease can be a cause for conjunctivitis in rabbits. Treatment consists of topical and oral antimicrobial agents and irrigation of the nasolacrimal system. Underlying dental disease needs to be addressed. Ulcerative keratitis, corneal dystrophy, membranous occlusion of the cornea and eosinophilic keratitis are described. Encephalitozoon cuniculi can cause phacoclastic uveitis in rabbits. A break in the anterior lens capsule exposes lens protein with subsequent anterior uveitis and cataract formation. Cataract surgery can be performed to remove the affected lens. Glaucoma is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait in rabbits. Orbital disease in rabbits may be associated with dental disease. Treatment is often difficult due to the caseous nature of the abscessed material. The most common ophthalmic diseases seen in ferrets include conjunctivitis, corneal endothelial cell degeneration, cataract formation, retinal degeneration and orbital disease. Ophthalmic diseases in guinea pigs include conjunctivitis, dermoids, cataract and osseous metaplasia of the mesectodermal trabecular meshwork. Exophthalmos may be related to dental disease in guinea pigs and chinchillas. Chromodacryorrhea is seen in rats and mice associated with inflammation of the Harderian gland. Sialodacryoadenitis virus is a highly contagious virus that may cause exophthalmos, epiphora and keratoconjunctivitis. Ammonia vapors from soiled bedding can cause keratoconjunctivitis in hamsters.

Identifying wildlife reservoirs of neglected taeniid tapeworms: Non-invasive diagnosis of endemic Taenia serialis infection in a wild primate population

Despite the global distribution and public health consequences of Taenia tapeworms, the life cycles of taeniids infecting wildlife hosts remain largely undescribed. The larval stage of Taenia serialis commonly parasitizes rodents and lagomorphs, but has been reported in a wide range of hosts that includes geladas (Theropithecus gelada), primates endemic to Ethiopia. Geladas exhibit protuberant larval cysts indicative of advanced T. serialis infection that are associated with high mortality. However, non-protuberant larvae can develop in deep tissue or the abdominal cavity, leading to underestimates of prevalence based solely on observable cysts. We adapted a non-invasive monoclonal antibody-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect circulating Taenia spp. antigen in dried gelada urine. Analysis revealed that this assay was highly accurate in detecting Taenia antigen, with 98.4% specificity, 98.5% sensitivity, and an area under the curve of 0.99. We used this assay to investigate the prevalence of T. serialis infection in a wild gelada population, finding that infection is substantially more widespread than the occurrence of visible T. serialis cysts (16.4% tested positive at least once, while only 6% of the same population exhibited cysts). We examined whether age or sex predicted T. serialis infection as indicated by external cysts and antigen presence. Contrary to the female-bias observed in many Taenia-host systems, we found no significant sex bias in either cyst presence or antigen presence. Age, on the other hand, predicted cyst presence (older individuals were more likely to show cysts) but not antigen presence. We interpret this finding to indicate that T. serialis may infect individuals early in life but only result in visible disease later in life. This is the first application of an antigen ELISA to the study of larval Taenia infection in wildlife, opening the doors to the identification and description of infection dynamics in reservoir populations.

Although tapeworm parasites of the genus Taenia are globally distributed and inflict enormous socioeconomic and health costs on their hosts, which include humans, little is known about taeniid tapeworms that infect wildlife. This gap in knowledge prevents an assessment of the potential for these parasites to infect humans and production animals and is largely due to the difficulty of conducting standard diagnostic tests on wildlife. To address this gap, we adapted a standard diagnostic assay to be used with dried urine samples. We used urine from geladas, primates endemic to Ethiopia, which are frequently infected with the larval stage of a taeniid tapeworm and exhibit protuberant cysts during advanced infection. The use of this diagnostic test in a wild gelada population allowed us to detect that individuals can be infected without exhibiting observable cysts, and that some individuals may control infection in its early stages. This tool provides information about how a neglected tapeworm functions in a wildlife system and opens the door to the non-invasive identification of tapeworm reservoir hosts that may threaten humans.

Retro-bulbar cyst of Coenurus gaigeri in Barbari goats

Two adult Barbari goats were presented to the Division of Animal Health of the Institute with the history of unilateral protrusion of the left eye ball, blepharitis and congestion of the conjunctival membrane. Physical and ultrasonographical examination revealed large fluctuating fluid filled bladder with distinct dimensions. The cysts were successfully removed along with its membrane and parasitological examination revealed it as a Coenurus gaigeri, the intermediate stage of T. multiceps gaigeri. The present report describes the retro-bulbar cyst of Coenurus gaigeri in two Barbari goats. This is the first report of retro-bulbar cyst of Coenurus gaigeri in goats.

Coenurus cerebralis cyst in the orbit of a ewe

A 4-year-old Rahmani breed ewe was presented for surgery to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, South Valley University, Egypt with enlargement and protrusion of the eye ball, blepharitis and congestion of the conjunctiva. On examination, a cyst 2.5 cm x 3.5 cm in diameter containing sandy fluid was detected in the perioptic nerve fat. Histopathological examination revealed that the epithelial lining of the conjunctiva was necrotic and severely infiltrated by neutrophils. The underlying connective tissue was oedematous, hyperaemic and severely infiltrated by neutrophils. Desquamation of the corneal epithelium was seen, together with oedema of the stroma. The tissue surrounding the cyst was compressed and the lacrimal glands revealed pressure atrophy. The muscular tissue was atrophied and infiltrated by fat cells. The cyst wall was lined with white scolices protruding from the inner wall. Based on the gross and histopathological characteristics of the cyst observed, the cyst was diagnosed as Coenurus cerebralis. This is the first report of orbital coenurosis in a sheep.
