Contribution of Italian nursing professors to international Literature: 2000 - 2016 review

The purpose of the study was to assess Italian nurse academics' scientific activity by exploring their publications in international journals.

BACKGROUND

The scientific production of a discipline's academics is a requisite for the university accreditation process and for employment in academic positions. It can also be used as an indicator of the maturity and importance of a given discipline in a country. Italian nurse academics' scientific production has not been analyzed recently.

METHOD

Quantitative descriptive study on an observation period of 16 years, from 2000 to 2016.

METHODS

All Italian full-time academics in the sector of General, Clinical, and Pediatric Nursing Sciences were identified, based on selection criteria. All their publications in indexed international journals were systematically collected between November 2016 and February 2017.

FINDINGS

Twenty-five Italian nurse academics were identified, and 450 of their publications met all our inclusion criteria, with a mean of 18 publications per author (range 0-88). There was a steady growth in the number of publications over time. Sixty-five percent of articles were published in nursing journals. Eighty-six percent of the publications were on nursing topics, the most popular being clinical issues (53.8%). Eighty percent of the publications were "applied research articles" and most of them adopted a quantitative approach with a descriptive study design. Hospitals and clinics were the most common settings studied, while patients and caregivers were the participants most often involved. Foreign coauthors contributed to 30% of the articles.

DISCUSSION

Italian nursing academics contribute adequately to scientific production in the nursing sector.

Nursing education research in Finland--A review of doctoral dissertations

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this literature review was to describe the focus of nursing education research in Finnish doctoral dissertations in the field of nursing and caring sciences between the years 1979-2014. In addition, the characteristics (methods, study informants and reporting of validity, reliability, and research ethics) of the dissertations were described.

METHODS AND DATA

A literature review was carried out. Altogether 51 Finnish doctoral dissertations of nursing and caring sciences focusing on nursing education research were included in the final analysis. The dissertations were published in 1990-2014. The data were analyzed by content analysis both deductively and inductively.

RESULTS

Finnish nursing education research was focused on four main areas: structural factors in nursing education, nurse teacherhood, teaching activities, and learning and learning outcomes in nursing education. The most central focus was learning in nursing education whereas nurse teacherhood and structural factors in nursing education were studied the least. Students were the predominant study informant group while nurse staff including nurse mentors were next and nurse educators only the third. Surveys and interviews were the most common data collection methods. In the findings there were a lot of similarities with international nursing education research.

CONCLUSIONS

Finnish nursing education research has been relatively student-centered yet studies focusing on the education of other nursing-based professions are rare. Future research about nurse teacherhood, curricula and structural factors in nursing education is recommended also. In addition, nursing education research should focus on the central phenomena of nursing education and working life. All in all, more nursing education research is needed. Nursing education dissertations cover only 12.3% of all the dissertations of nursing and caring sciences in Finland.

Speech pathologists and audiologists with Ph.D. in Brazil: profile from 1976 to 2008

BACKGROUND

keeping data about Ph.D.s of speech pathologists and audiologists updated allows the retrieval of what has been developed in these fields of knowledge, besides giving a dimension of the development of the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences in our country.

AIM

to analyze the educational background of Brazilian speech pathologists and audiologists with Ph.D. within the period of 1976-2008.

METHOD

doctorate dissertations presented by Brazilian speech pathologists and audiologists during the period of 1976 (first presentation) to the end of 2008 were selected through information provided by postgraduation offices and also by consulting data published on Plataforma Lattes (online curriculum vitae for professors and scientists). For each finding the following variables were registered: author's gender, year of presentation, educational institution and post-graduate program where the dissertation was developed (according to the areas of knowledge determined by National Council of Scientific and Technological Development) and chosen theme (Language, Hearing and Balance, Motricity and orofacial functions, Voice e Public Health). The statistical analysis involved the description of the selected parameters, a regression analysis to verify increase of Ph.D. presentations, area of development and chosen theme, and application of the chi-square test to verify possible associations.

RESULTS

a total of 504 dissertations were analyzed. The results were: 97.0% of the dissertations were presented by women; State Institutions were chosen by almost half (47.62%) of the speech pathologists and audiologists to obtain their Ph.D.; the Sciences of Life programs were the most prevalent (57.54%); concerning the chosen theme, most of the dissertations were developed in the field of Language (34.52%) and Hearing and Balance (32.34%). The regression analysis indicated an increase of all of the studied variables with significance mostly related to the year of presentation, choice of the area of Applied Human and Social Sciences and Sciences of Life and themes of Language and Motricity and Orofacial functions (p < 0,001). There was also an increase related to the option for Public Institutions, mostly State Institutions(p < 0,001).

CONCLUSION

there was a significant increase of speech pathologists and audiologists with Ph. D., which enables major insertion of these professionals in research activities and qualified scientific production.
