The laterality of ovulation: how far does it matter?

The laterality of ovulation, or the side at which ovulation occurs, was the subject of much research in the past century, but it was discussed merely as an interesting physiologic issue in all primates. In the last few years, the increasing development of infertility treatment has drawn the attention of researchers to the clinical aspects of this phenomenon. In the review, we discuss the nature of ovulation side and how far it can influence pregnancy outcome in infertile women treated with different modalities.

Anatomicohistological characteristics of the tubular genital organs of the female woolly monkey (Lagothrix poeppigii)

Functional morphology of the reproductive organs is a key component for the better understanding of reproductive patterns as well to maximize reproductive efficiency and to develop assisted breeding techniques adapted to wildlife. This study examined anatomical and histological characteristics of genital organs of 60 Poeppig's woolly monkey females in the wild in different reproductive stages, collected by rural hunters in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. The endometrium, the endometrial glands, and the myometrium showed a significant increase in size related to the follicular growth. In nonpregnant females in the follicular phase, the endometrium, the endometrial glands, and the myometrium showed a significant increase related to the follicular growth. Nonpregnant females in the luteal phase had a thicker endometrium, a greater proliferation of endometrial glands, and a thicker myometrium, compared to females in the follicular phase. Nonpregnant females with small antral follicles presented high amounts of collagen beneath the endometrial epithelium, a sign of endometrial regeneration after menstruation that could be useful for the diagnosis of the reproductive phase in this species. A larger proportion of secreting cervical glands was observed in pregnant females compared to other females. The cervical mucous secretion occupied the lumen of the endocervical canal, assuring that no material could enter the uterus during gestation. The Poeppig's woolly monkey showed different vaginal epithelium features in accordance with the reproductive state of the female, suggesting that vaginal cytology could be a successful methodology with which to characterize the estrous cycle of wild primates. The present reproductive evaluation of Poeppig's woolly monkey provides important information that could improve the methodologies for the diagnosis of the reproductive phase of females, the assisted reproductive techniques in non-human primates, and could also give us opportunity for comparative studies and an insight into the evolution of animal reproductive biology, including humans.

Solly Zuckerman: the making of a primatological career in Britain, 1925-1945

Solly Zuckerman's work has been largely dismissed or marginalized by both historians of primatology and primatologists. This paper, using archival and published materials, re-examines both his life and his research into primate sexuality and sociology in the 1920s, endocrinology in the 1930s, and the effects of bomb blast in the 1940s. Despite the many flaws in his work, which is now largely outdated, his career reveals a great deal about the audiences for primatological knowledge in pre-war and wartime Britain; the interlocking circles of the scientific community that impinged on primatology; and competing ideas of what constituted a scientifically correct methodology for the observation of primate behaviour. Also noted is the gap between Zuckerman's self-presentation as the scourge of anthropomorphism and the anthropomorphism of his remarks in private notebooks. Although his work well illustrates familiar themes of patriarchy, military and colonialism in the history of primatology, it also suggests another, underexplored dimension of that science: primatology as an example of cross-species social interaction.

Reproductive parameters and paracallosal skin color changes in captive female guinea baboons, Papio papio

Reproductive data are presented for female Papio papio housed in the Zoological Park of Paris and are compared with previously published data from free-ranging populations of other baboon species. The results indicate similar intermenstrual intervals and durations of sexual swelling. Sexual swelling and pregnancy are accelerated in captivity, while postpartum amenorrhea and interbirth interval are reduced. Interbirth intervals in P. papio were short, approximately 13 months in the case of viable, surviving infants and approximately 11 months in the case of stillbirth or neonatal mortality. The shorter interval may represent the lower physiological limit, and the generally shorter interbirth interval reported here may be explained by lower stress and reduced maternal investment costs in the captive environment. Paracallosal skin color variations during the menstrual cycle were influenced by parity, but sexual swelling patterns were not. The paracallosal skin changes might be used by males as a cue to females' reproductive status.

Cyclical changes in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system during the menstrual cycle of the baboon (Papio hamadryas)

This study characterizes the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system during the normal menstrual cycle in the baboon. Ten animals received a daily dose of an ACE inhibitor or placebo in a randomized blind cross-over design. Data were obtained during the mid-follicular and early luteal phases of normal non-pregnant menstrual cycles. All examinations and blood collections were performed with ketamine sedation: 7-kg by im injection. Blood pressure was recorded by sphygmomanometer. Serum ACE activity was measured by spectrophotometry. Aldosterone (ALDO), angiotensin I (AI), and angiotensin II (AII) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Plasma renin activity (PRA) was measured by AI generation. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system was found to be activated in the follicular phase and suppressed during the luteal phase of the normal non-pregnant menstrual cycle in the baboon.

Histology of the baboon endometrium during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy

The histologic characteristics of baboon endometrium during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy were studied and compared with those of human endometrium. Eight phases of endometrial change during the menstrual cycle are described. The samples were dated on the basis of sex skin changes. The basic histology of the baboon endometrium is similar to that of human endometrium, but some differences were observed. The growth of baboon endometrium is more sluggish, secretion is less intense, and many of the changes, especially in the stroma, are localized, less diffuse than they are in human endometrium. During pregnancy, decidual transformation in the baboon is much less intense than that in the human. No differences were observed between endometrium in association with preimplantation embryos and that from nonpregnant animals at comparable times following ovulation.
