Perineural Pseudoinvasion: An Unusual Phenomenon in Nonmalignancies

Perineural invasion (PNI) is characterized as tumoral or nontumoral cells invading in or around the nerves. The neural invasion is considered as a histopathologic characteristic for malignancy and is considered a mechanism for its spread. Both of these patterns usually portend a poor prognosis and very often are markers to prompt additional treatment. There are also some nonmalignancies representing PNI, including benign neoplasms, mimicking lesions, and disorders, such as chronic pancreatitis and endometriosis. The previously recommended terms are PNI, spread, or infiltration. To distinguish PNI in malignancies from that in nonmalignancies, we propose the term "perineural pseudoinvasion" to convey their nonmalignant behavior. Despite the low prevalence, awareness of this benign pseudoinvasion is necessary to avoid aggressive treatment and its misdiagnosis with malignancies. We conducted a systematic search in PubMed and Scopus databases up to December 2015 to find articles reporting PNI in nonmalignancies. After screening, 63 articles were identified as relevant. There were also 2 review articles discussing PNI in nonmalignancies. We aim to present an overview of the perineural pseudoinvasion and to discuss the previously published review articles.

Multiple cutaneous granular cell tumors in a child with possible neurofibromatosis

A 4-year-old girl with possible neurofibromatosis I had multiple subcutaneous nodules. On histopathologic examination, these nodules were diagnosed as multiple cutaneous granular cell tumors. An association between these tumors and neurofibromatosis I has been suggested because of their common neuroectodermal origin. We review cases of multiple cutaneous granular cell tumors in association with neurofibromatosis I in childhood.

An isolated granular cell tumour of the thumb pulp clinically mimicking a glomus tumour

A rare case of an isolated granular cell tumour of the thumb pulp clinically mimicking a glomus tumour is described. The rationale behind performing oestrogen receptor staining for granular cell tumours is discussed.

Seventeen granular cell lip tumors in a six-year-old boy

A review of the literature and a rare report of a case involving multiple (17) granular cell tumors of the lips are presented. The surgical approach and management were predicted on the principles of complete surgical removal, cosmetics, and producing anatomic symmetry.

Granular cell tumor in the hand

A case of multifocal granular cell myoblastoma involving the hand is reported. Granular cell tumors are uncommon benign neoplasms infrequently seen in the hand. Multifocal occurrence is even more unusual. Clinical and pathologic diagnosis may be difficult.

Multiple granular cell tumors of the palate

A report of a case of bilateral granular cell tumors of the soft palate is presented. This is an unusual location for the tumor and is the first report of bilateral tumors at this site.

Granular cell tumor. An analysis of 16 cases and review of the literature

Sixteen patients with granular cell tumors were seen between 1964 and 1979. The medical data of these patients showed an average age incidence of 39 years and a greater frequency among Negroes (69%) and in female patients (62.5%). The most common sign (in 12 of 16 patients) was the presence of an asymptomatic mass. There was a total of 88 tumors in 16 patients; 74 arose in the skin, 6 in the oral cavity, 2 each in the breast and perineum, and 1 each in the larynx, parotid gland, eyelid, and appendix. Multiple tumors were noted in 4 patients (25%), all of whom were Negroes. The histogenesis of this tumor is still controversial but appears to favor the theory of multipotential undifferentiated mesenchymal cell origin.
