Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver ailment worldwide, in which nonpharmacological strategies have a considerable role in the treatment. Probiotic supplementation as well as physical exercise can improve cardiometabolic parameters, but further research is needed to determine the effects of combined treatment versus exercise alone in managing NAFLD-associated biomarkers, primarily liver enzymes, lipid markers, and insulin resistance. OBJECTIVES This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of probiotic supplementation, combined with exercise versus exercise alone, on liver enzymes and cardiometabolic markers in patients with NAFLD. METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials was performed by searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to April 2024. The search was restricted to articles published in the English language and human studies. Random effects models were used to calculate weighted mean differences (WMD). RESULTS Pooled estimates (9 studies, 615 patients, intervention durations ranging from 8 to 48 weeks) revealed that probiotics plus exercise decreased aspartate transaminase (AST) [WMD=-5.64 U/L, p = 0.02], gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) [WMD=-7.09 U/L, p = 0.004], low-density lipoprotein (LDL) [WMD=-8.98 mg/dL, p = 0.03], total cholesterol (TC) [WMD=-16.97 mg/dL, p = 0.01], and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) [WMD=-0.94, p = 0.005] significantly more than exercise only. However, probiotics plus exercise did not significantly change high-density lipoprotein (HDL) [WMD = 0.07 mg/dL, p = 0.9], fasting insulin [WMD=-1.47 µIU/mL, p = 0.4] or fasting blood glucose (FBG) [WMD=-1.57 mg/dL, p = 0.3] compared with exercise only. While not statistically significant, there were clinically relevant reductions in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) [WMD=-6.78 U/L, p = 0.1], triglycerides (TG) [WMD=-21.84 mg/dL, p = 0.1], and body weight (BW) [WMD=-1.45 kg, p = 0.5] for probiotics plus exercise compared with exercise only. The included studies exhibited significant heterogeneity for AST (I2 = 78.99%, p = 0.001), GGT (I2 = 73.87%, p = 0.004), LDL (I2 = 62.78%, p = 0.02), TC (I2 = 72.41%, p = 0.003), HOMA-IR (I2 = 93.86%, p = 0.001), HDL (I2 = 0.00%, p = 0.9), FBG (I2 = 66.30%, p = 0.01), ALT (I2 = 88.08%, p = 0.001), and TG (I2 = 85.46%, p = 0.001). There was no significant heterogeneity among the included studies for BW (I2 = 0.00%, p = 0.9). CONCLUSION Probiotic supplementation combined with exercise training elicited better results compared to exercise alone on liver enzymes, lipid profile, and insulin resistance in patients with NAFLD. Abstract
Low-carbohydrate diets (LCDs) have gained interest due to their favorable effects on health outcomes, such as inflammation. However, further research is needed to ascertain the overall effects of LCDs on inflammatory parameters, but at the same time considering weight loss and calorie intake. Thus, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials was performed to investigate the effects of LCDs compared with low-fat diets (LFDs), with and without caloric restriction, on inflammatory markers in adults. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched through March 2022 to select intervention studies addressing LCDs vs. LFDs, in which the following circulating inflammatory markers were used: C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin (IL-6). Analyses were conducted comparing LCDs vs. LFDs through weighted mean differences (WMD) or standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) using random effects models. The systematic review and meta-analysis included a total of 51 studies with a total sample of 4,164 adults, with or without other chronic diseases. Intervention durations ranged from 2-144 weeks. LCDs, compared with LFDs, significantly decreased body weight [WMD = -1.35%, p = 0.001], CRP [SMD = -0.1, p = 0.03], and IL-6 [SMD = -0.15, p = 0.09]. However, LCDs did not significantly decrease TNF-α [SMD = -0.02, p = 0.7] compared to LFDs. In conclusion, LCDs have a beneficial effect on markers of inflammation by decreasing CRP and IL-6; this effect has an association with weight loss. However, LCDs were not more effective than LFDs in decreasing TNF-α.

Abstract
Vascular access (VA) is the cornerstone for carrying out hemodialysis, yet it may bring in complications and leads to hemodialysis quality decline. This study aimed to explore the impact of vascular access types, including arteriovenous shunts and central venous catheter on all-cause mortality after adjustment of other risk factors. Total 738 ESRD patients aged over 40 year old receiving regular hemodialysis therapies were recruited between January 2001 and December 2010 from a single hemodialysis center in northern Taiwan. We ascertained the causes and date of death by linking our hospital database with Nationwide Mortality Registry Database. VA types and biochemistry parameters were extracted from the electronic hospital records. Patients were categorized into three groups, including (1)arteriovenous shunts (AVF)/arteriovenous shunts with Gortex®(AVG); (2)AVF/AVG combined central venous catheter; (3)catheter only. The time-dependent influence of vascular types i.e. initiation and follow-up period was also assessed. The mean follow-up time was 4.5 years. In patients using central venous catheter for initiation of hemodialysis, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality was 1.55(95%CI: 1.09, 2.21), when compared with AVF/AVG. In the follow-up period, after adjustment for other risk factors, the multivariable analysis showed that the adjusted HRs were 3.23(95%CI: 1.85, 5.64) and 1.45(95%CI: 1.11, 1.91) for catheter only and AVF/AVG plus catheter, respectively. Our results showed that vascular accesses used for hemodialysis had different and time-dependent impact on patients' long-term survival. Patients who started hemodialysis with central venous catheter had significantly higher all-cause mortality rate. Furthermore, in the follow-up period, patients both in the catheter only and AVF/AVG plus catheter groups also had the significant all-cause mortality rates. Our results support the early establishment of arteriovenous shunt for the chronic kidney disease patients.

Abstract
AIM To investigate whether the -1082A > G polymorphism (rs1800896) in the interleukin-10 (IL10) gene is associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Brazilians with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS This case-control study included 847 outpatients with type 2 diabetes and 145 healthy blood donors. Four hundred and two patients had no DR, 253 had non-proliferative DR (NPDR), and 192 had proliferative DR (PDR). Genotyping was done by real-time PCR. RESULTS Genotype and allele frequencies were similar in patients and blood donors. In relation to the presence and severity of DR, the AA genotype was overrepresented among patients with NPDR, whereas the GG genotype was more frequent among patients with PDR. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the AA genotype was independently associated with increased risk of NPDR, after controlling for duration of diabetes, body mass index, and insulin use (adjusted OR = 1.50; 95% CI = 1.04-2.17). The GG genotype, however, did not remain associated with increased risk of PDR (adjusted OR = 1.49; 95% CI = 0.78-2.86). CONCLUSIONS This study identified, for the first time, an independent association of the -1082A > G polymorphism in the IL10 gene with NPDR in type 2 diabetes. This finding provides additional evidence supporting that genetic variants of IL10 are involved in the pathogenesis of DR.

Abstract
Some hemodialysis patients suffer from repeat dysfunction of dialysis vascular access and need procedures of angioplasty, thrombectomy, and even temporary catheter use. Why these patients are vulnerable to vascular access dysfunction and how to improve its patency are imperative to be discovered. Traditional risk factors for vascular access function had been widely investigated but could not fully explain this question. Several genotype polymorphisms were demonstrated to increase the incidence of cardiovascular disease and might also be linked to higher risk of vascular access dysfunction. As the major causes of arteriovenous access thrombosis are hypercoagulable status and arteriovenous access stenosis, the investigated genes mainly focus on the mediators of the coagulation cascade, inflammatory process, and endothelial dysfunction. The reported polymorphisms of genes significantly associated with arteriovenous access dysfunction included genes encoding methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase, coagulation factors, heme oxygenase-1, matrix metalloproteinase, transforming growth factor-β1, tumor necrosis factor-α, vascular endothelial growth factor-A, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, and protein methyl transferase. However, further prospective study is indispensable to elucidate the association between the genotype polymorphisms and the outcome of vascular access. More and more therapeutic options that focus on genotype polymorphisms may generate a great benefit to the patency of vascular access of uremic patients.

Abstract
Background: The level of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and its gene polymorphism are associated with the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and the related complications. This study aimed to investigate the correction between IL-6 -174G/C polymorphism and ESRD by meta-analysis. Methods: Using the databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, CNKI, and CBM, the data of case-control studies on correlation between IL-6 -174G/C polymorphism and ESRD from database establishment to January 2016 were collected. According to inclusion and exclusion criteria, the quality of literatures was evaluated. The relevant research data were extracted, followed by meta-analysis using Revman 5.3 software (London, UK). The combined odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of each genetic model were calculated, and the publication bias data was assessed using the Stata 12.0 software (College Station, TX). Results: A total of five literatures were included, with 1199 cases in case group and 1089 cases in control group. Meta-analysis showed that, there was no significant correlation between each genetic model of IL-6 -174G/C polymorphism and ESRD [(C versus G): OR = 1.36, 95%CI (0.69, 2.66), p = .38; (CC + GC versus GG): OR = 1.28, 95%CI (0.58, 2.82), p = .54; (CC versus GG + GC): OR = 1.71, 95%CI (0.82, 3.54), p = .15; (CC versus GG): OR = 1.74, 95%CI (0.76, 3.99), p = .19; (GC versus GG): OR = 1.18, 95%CI (0.55, 2.54), p = .67]. The race subgroup analysis showed that, there was no significant correlation between each genetic model of IL-6 -174G/C polymorphism and ESRD in the Caucasians (p > .05). Conclusion: IL-6 -174G/C polymorphism has no significant correlation with the susceptibility risk of ESRD, and may not be a risk factor for ESRD.

Abstract
Inflammation and genetics have key roles in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, and the etiology of myocardial infarction (MI). Recent studies have indicated that lower serum levels of fetuin-A may accelerate the vascular mineralization process, which leads to pathophysiological conditions, such as coronary heart disease and chronic renal failure. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between specific fetuin-A polymorphisms (742 and 766) that are associated with circulating serum levels, and MI cases. The study consisted of 292 participants; 146 healthy control subjects and 146 patients with MI. The patient group was divided into two subgroups: 56 MI ≤ 40 years and 90 MI ≥ 40 years. The genotype distribution of fetuin 742 (C/T) and fetuin 766 (C/G) were determined by restriction enzyme digestion of polymerase chain reaction products. A significant difference was determined between the patients with MI and the control subjects with regards to fetuin-A 742 C/T gene polymorphism (P=0.028), regardless of age. Genotype distributions of fetuin-A 742 (C/G, P=0.004) and 766 (C/T, P=0.017) were statistically different in the older patients with MI (MI ≥ 40 years old), as compared with the healthy controls; however, there were no significant differences between the younger patients with MI and the controls, with regards to fetuin-A 742 C/T (P=0.519) and 766 C/G (P=0.653) gene polymorphisms. In addition, an association was observed between the presence of fetuin-A 742 T and 766 G alleles, and MI cases. The present study demonstrates that fetuin-A 742 (C/T) and 766 (C/G) genotypes may be risk factors for MI in patients older than 40 years of age.

Abstract
PURPOSE Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF - α) -308 G > A promoter polymorphism seems to be associated with adverse clinical outcome in hemodialysis patients (HD). Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene may be the causative factor contributing to the deterioration of renal functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vascular access failure and the genetic polymorphisms of ACE and TNF-α gene. METHODS We enrolled and genotyped 47 HD patients with arteriovenous fistula (AVF) thrombosis, 51 HD patients without AVF thrombosis, and 40 healthy controls. The genotypes of these polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism. RESULTS The genotype distribution of TNF-α -308 G > A in patients with thrombosis was significantly different from the patients without thrombosis (p = 0.008). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of ACE I/D polymorphism (p = 0.213). CONCLUSION Our results propose that TNF-α -308 G > A genotype may be a potential genetic marker on HD patients with AVF thrombosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Chronic inflammatory status is a possible risk factor for vascular access dysfunction in hemodialysis (HD) patients, but susceptibility differences appear among individuals. Interleukin (IL)-6 is a well-known inflammatory cytokine with various polymorphisms. We examined whether IL-6 polymorphisms are associated with vascular access dysfunction in HD patients. METHODS A total of 80 HD patients (including 42 diabetic patients) were enrolled. Polymorphisms in the IL-6 gene promoter (-634 C/G and -174 G/C) were studied using restriction length polymorphism polymerase chain reaction analysis. Vascular access patency was compared between the patient groups with respect to IL-6 polymorphisms. An additional 89 healthy individuals were enrolled in the control group. Plasma IL-6 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The GG genotype and G allele at position -634 in the IL-6 promoter were more frequently observed in HD patients than in controls. Furthermore, the distribution of the -634 polymorphism differed according to vascular access patency in non-diabetic HD patients. However, the G allele was not a significant risk factor for early access failure. No significant association appeared between the IL-6 -634 C/G polymorphism and plasma IL-6 levels. The C allele of the IL-6 -174 G/C polymorphism was not detected in our study population. CONCLUSIONS The IL-6 -634 G allele appears with greater frequently in patients with end-stage renal disease and may be associated with vascular access dysfunction in non-diabetic HD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha) is a potent proinflammatory cytokine. Through its effects on lipid metabolism and endothelial function, TNFalpha is involved in cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have studied two polymorphisms in the promoter region of the TNFalpha gene (TNF -308G/A and TNF -238G/A) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with and without CVD. The aim was to assess the association of these polymorphisms with ESRD and cardiovascular comorbidity in hemodialyzed patients. METHODS A total of 603 patients with ESRD treated with hemodialysis (382 patients with CVD) and 325 healthy control subjects were genotyped for the TNF -308G/A and TNF -238G/A ploymorphisms by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) procedure. RESULTS The A allele of the TNF -308 polymorphism was more frequent in the ESRD group than in control individuals. The odds ratio (OR) for the risk allele was 2.05 (95% CI 1.48, 2.84). In the subgroup of ESRD patients with CVD, the OR was 5.76 (95% CI 3.67, 9.03) relative to ESRD patients without CVD. There was no association observed between the TNF -238 polymorphism and renal failure or CVD in ESRD patients. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate for the first time that the A allele of the TNF -308 polymorphism is associated with CVD in hemodialyzed ESRD patients. If confirmed in prospective studies, it may be a predictor of increased susceptibility to CVD in these patients.

Abstract
Bone is a dynamic tissue. Skeletal bone integrity is maintained through bone modeling and remodeling. The mechanisms underlying this bone mass regulation are complex and interrelated. An imbalance in the regulation of bone remodeling through bone resorption and bone formation results in bone loss. Chronic inflammation influences bone mass regulation. Inflammation-related bone disorders share many common mechanisms of bone loss. These mechanisms are ultimately mediated through the uncoupling of bone remodeling. Cachexia, physical inactivity, pro-inflammatory cytokines, as well as iatrogenic factors related to effects of immunosuppression are some of the common mechanisms. Recently, cytokine signaling through the central nervous system has been investigated for its potential role in bone mass dysregulation in inflammatory conditions. Growing research on the molecular mechanisms involved in inflammation-induced bone loss may lead to more selective therapeutic targeting of these pathological signaling pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Cytokine gene polymorphisms have been implicated as potential genetic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Atherosclerosis and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are surrogate markers for CVDs in uremic patients. The aim of this study was to assess the role of cytokine gene polymorphisms in carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) progression in nondiabetic hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS About 102 nondiabetic patients on maintenance HD were included in this study. Patients were followed up for 2 years. Genetic polymorphisms of TNF-alpha (-308 G/A, -238A/G) and IL-10 (-1082 A/G, -819 C/T, -592 A/C) were determined by polymerase chain reaction. Biochemical parameters and inflammatory markers and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) measurements were determined during the study period. CIMT and LVMI were also determined at baseline and after the first and second year. RESULTS Cardiovascular risk factors did not differ between TNF-alpha -308 high-/low-producer genotype groups. However, CIMT and LVMI progression were detected at higher levels in patients with high-producer genotypes (AA+AG) than in patients with the low-producer genotype (GG) during the study period. The TNF-alpha -308 G/A polymorphism was closely associated with C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation in the study population. Analysis also showed that the combination of high production of TNF-alpha and low production of IL-10 was associated with higher average IMT and LVMI progression and elevated average CRP levels compared with a combination of low production of TNF-alpha and high production of IL-10. CONCLUSION Polymorphisms in inflammatory genes may represent an additional factor affecting inflammation and CVD progression in nondiabetic HD patients.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation is a well-recognized complication in dialysis patients and a potential role of the adipose tissue as an important tissue of origin contributing to inflammation has been proposed. Stable peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients were enrolled to investigate the relationship between serum levels of proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines. Our results revealed that there was a strong association between high sensitivity C-reactive protein and interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) but not with IL-10 and IL-18. IL-6 correlated with TNF-alpha, IL-10, and IL-18. No association was found between IL-10 and IL-18. Adiponectin was positively correlated with all proinflammatory cytokines, except IL-10. No significant association was found between resistin and proinflammatory cytokines. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was directly related to proinflammatory cytokines but not with adipokines. The presence of residual kidney function (RKF) affected IL-6, TNF-alpha, and HGF levels. The peritoneal transport property did not influence inflammatory cytokine and adipokine levels. In conclusion, there was a close relationship between proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines. HGF correlated with proinflammatory cytokines but not with adipokines. The PD-related factors such as RKF, peritoneal property and dialysis glucose load affected levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Body mass index was an important determinant of leptin and adiponectin in PD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral contraceptives (OCs) with estrogens and progestins may affect oxidative stress (OS) status. STUDY DESIGN A group of 32 women using oral contraceptives (OCU) containing 0.03 mg ethinylestradiol and 3 mg drospirenone have been compared to a matched control group of 30 noncontraception users (NCU). Blood levels of antioxidants, trace elements and markers of lipid peroxidation were assessed by biochemical methods. A microarray analysis of whole blood mRNA levels of 200 genes involved in OS-dependant pathway was also performed. RESULTS Levels of zinc, vitamin E and antibodies to oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) were not significantly different between the two groups. On the other hand, significant increases in the mean levels of lipid peroxides (+176%, p<.001), oxidized LDLs (+145%, p<.002), copper (+103%, p<.001), Cu/Zn ratio (+100%, p<.001) and a significant decrease in the mean level of beta-carotene (-41%, p<.01) were observed in the OCU compared to NCU. There was a highly significant positive correlation between the lipid peroxide levels and the copper-to-zinc ratio. From the 200 genes tested by microarray, one coding for HSP70 was significantly up-regulated (log(2) fold change=+ 0.45, p<.02) and one coding for inducible nitric oxide synthase significantly down-regulated (log(2) fold change=-0.24, p<.05) in the OCU compared to the NCU. CONCLUSIONS The recently introduced combination of ethinylestradiol and drospirenone induced the heightening of lipid peroxidation correlated with high levels of copper, a situation that could be associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to assess whether low serum levels of fetuin-A are potential biochemical predictor of early and/or late survival in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. DESIGN AND METHODS We measured serum levels of fetuin-A in 67 patients on chronic HD, and correlated it to 3, 12, and 24 months mortality. RESULTS Cumulative death rate was 7%, 19%, and 37% deaths at 3, 12, and 24 months. Serum fetuin-A was significantly lower in 3 months and 12 months non-survivals (p<0.001), but not in 24 months non-survivals. Kaplan-Meier analyses based on fetuin-A tertiles showed statistically significantly increased probability of death up to 12 months of follow-up for decreasing fetuin-A concentrations (p<0.008). CONCLUSIONS Fetuin-A as a circulating inhibitor of vascular calcification was significant predictor of early mortality in chronic HD patients but did not appear as a fair marker for later survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both environmental and genetic factors contribute to the development and progression of chronic kidney disease. The completion of the human genome sequence and advances in genomic technology make possible identification of gene variants associated with renal failure. OBJECTIVE This review discusses the relevant genetic studies in chronic kidney disease, with particular emphasis on the most common causes of end stage renal failure, diabetic nephropathy and glomerulonephritis. METHODS Most of the studies presented were performed in recent years and employed association studies, both population-based and with candidate genes, as well as the genome-wide association and genome-wide scan approaches. RESULTS/CONCLUSION Increasing evidence supports an important role of genetic susceptibility in the development and progression of renal failure. Identification of disease genes will allow the identification of patients at high risk and the development of new strategies to prevent or delay the renal disease process.

Abstract
The bench-to-bedside approach to translational research is becoming increasingly important to efficiently advance understanding of the mechanisms underlying disease and to improve the quality of patient care. Although this investigation model has been practiced since the early days of the therapy, robust research platforms built to practice translational research have only recently been structured in the field of peritoneal dialysis. Experience with a translational research environment that generated most of the information cited in this overview is the core of this manuscript. The central investigation theme described is how to approach the cardiovascular complications of peritoneal dialysis. The research question was, could the continuous activation of inflammatory pathways be central in this process and represent a relevant target for interventions?

Abstract
Mortality is markedly elevated in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Between 30 and 50% of prevalent patients have elevated serum levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and IL-6. The presence of inflammation, chronic or episodic, has been found to be associated with increased mortality risk. The causes of inflammation are multifactorial and include patient-related factors, such as underlying disease, comorbidity, oxidative stress, infections, obesity, and genetic or immunologic factors, or on the other side, HD-related factors, mainly depending on the membrane biocompatibility and dialysate quality. The adequate knowledge of these causes and their prevention or treatment if possible may contribute to improving the inflammatory state of patients who are on HD and possibly their mortality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although immune dysfunction in patients with cancer could be multifactorial, the immune system may be modulated by nutritional substrates and genetic background. Our study evaluated the effect of G308A polymorphism of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene on inflammatory markers in patients after surgery for head and neck cancer who received early enteral nutrition. METHODS A population of 60 patients with oral and laryngeal cancer was enrolled. At surgery patients were treated with a hyperproteic enteral diet. Perioperatively and on postoperative day 6 the following parameters were evaluated: serum values of prealbumin, transferrin, total number of lymphocytes, interleukin-6, TNF-alpha, and C-reactive protein. In addition, genotyping of G308A gene polymorphism was assessed. RESULTS Patients' mean age was 61.1 +/- 14.6 y (four women, 56 men) with a body mass index of 25.4 +/- 5.2 kg/m(2) and a previous weight loss of 0.35 +/- 0.2 kg. Forty patients (37 men, 3 women; 66.6%) had the genotype G308/G308 (wild group) and 20 patients (19 men, 1 woman; 23.4%) had the genotype G308/A308 (mutant group). A significant increase in prealbumin and transferrin levels was detected in both groups. C-reactive protein decreased in both groups (wild group: 105.1 +/- 60 versus 53.8 +/- 62.3 mg/dL, P < 0.05; mutant group: 99.5 +/- 46 versus 43.9 +/- 51.9 mg/dL, P < 0.05). Interleukin-6 decreased in both groups (wild group: 20.1 +/- 22 versus 6.2 +/- 4.1 pg/mL, P < 0.05; mutant group: 22.3 +/- 38 versus 9.2 +/- 7.4 pg/mL, P = NS). Lymphocytes increased in both groups (wild group: 1102 +/- 468 versus 1600 +/- 537 10(3)/mL, P = NS; mutant group: 1441 +/- 739 10(3)/mL versus 1669 +/- 614 10(6)/mL, P = NS). TNF-alpha showed no changes. CONCLUSION The G308A polymorphism of the TNF-alpha gene did not affect levels of inflammatory markers in patients after surgery for head and neck cancer who were treated with early enteral nutrition.
