Resin cement selection for different types of fixed partial coverage restorations: A narrative systematic review

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to review the selection criteria of resin cements for different types of partial coverage restorations (PCRs) and investigate if the type of restorations or restorative materials affect the type of selected resin cement.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An electronic search (1991-2023) was performed in PubMed, Medline, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases by combinations of related keywords.

RESULTS

A total of 68 articles were included to review the selection criteria based on the advantages, disadvantages, indications, and performance of resin cements for different types of PCRs.

CONCLUSIONS

The survival and success of PCRs are largely affected by appropriate cement selection. Self-curing and dual-curing resin cements have been recommended for the cementation of metallic PCRs. The PCRs fabricated from thin, translucent, and low-strength ceramics could be adhesively bonded by light-cure conventional resin cements. Self-etching and self-adhesive cements, especially dual-cure types, are not generally indicated for laminate veneers.

Dental Alloy Adhesive Primers and Bond Strength at Alloy-Resin Interface: A Systematic Review and Meta-analyses

AIM

The present systematic review aimed to report the studies concerning the primers in improving bond strength and identifying pertinent primers for a particular dental alloy by adhering to PRISMA precepts.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed and Semantic Scholar databases were scoured for articles using 10 search terms. In vitro studies satisfying the inclusion criteria were probed which were meticulously screened and scrutinized for eligibility adhering to the 11 exclusion criteria. The quality assessment tool for in vitro studies (QUIN Tool) containing 12 criteria was employed to assess the risk of bias (RoB).

RESULTS

A total of 48 studies assessing shear bond strength (SBS) and 15 studies evaluating tensile bond strength (TBS) were included in the qualitative synthesis. Concerning SBS, 33.4% moderate and 66.6% high RoB was observed. Concerning TBS, 26.8% moderate and 73.2% high RoB was discerned. Seventeen and two studies assessing SBS and TBS, respectively, were included in meta-analyses.

CONCLUSIONS

Shear bond strength and TBS increased for the primed alloys. Cyclic disulfide primer is best-suited for noble alloys when compared with thiol/thione primers. Phosphoric acid- and phosphonic acid ester-based primers are opportune for base alloys.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The alloy-resin interface (ARI) would fail if an inappropriate primer was selected. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate alloy adhesive primer for an alloy plays a crucial role in prosthetic success. This systematic review would help in the identification and selection of a congruous primer for a selected alloy.

An Enamel Based Biopolymer Prosthesis for Dental Treatment with the Proper Bond Strength and Hardness and Biosafety

Although dental prosthesis materials such as metal alloys, ceramics, and cured resin composite have long been utilized to restore teeth, their bond strength and hardness values are not well matched to human enamel. Prosthesis detachment and opposing enamel wear are major concerns in restorative dentistry. An experimental biopolymer, hybridized enamel, was synthesized and utilized as a dental prosthesis to compare hardness and tensile bond strength (TBS) with those of commercial materials. Vickers hardness (VHN) with a 100 g loading for 15 s at eight indentations on each specimen (n = 20) was measured. TBSs between prostheses and two types of resin luting agents (n = 10), Super-Bond C&B and All-Bond2 + Duo-Link, were tested. Fractured surfaces and the luting resin-prosthesis interface were examined under a stereomicroscope or a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Statistically significant differences in the TBS and hardness were revealed (p < 0.05). The experimental biopolymer provided a hardness value comparable with human enamel and the highest TBS for both luting agent types. The SEM micrograph demonstrated a honeycomb-like pattern interface between the experimental biopolymer and luting resin. These results suggest that this experimental biopolymer may be a better restorative material to protect from natural enamel loss from tooth reduction or attrition and prevent prosthesis detachment during mastication.

Effects of Different Surface Treatments on Bond Strength of Resin Cement to Machined Pure Titanium

PURPOSE

To investigate the effects of grit blasting, acidic or alkaline/heat treatments, and metal primer application on the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement to machined commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Titanium plates were machined and received one of the following treatments: grit-blasting (GB), or grit-blasting followed by either acidic treatment (GB/AC) or alkaline/heat treatment (GB/AH). The specimens were randomly divided into 4 groups and treated with Rely X Ceramic Primer (RCP), Z Prime Plus (ZPP), and Alloy Primer (ALP), or without primer as the control. The pairs of titanium plates were cemented together with the Rely X Unicem cement. SBS was measured before and after thermocycling between 5°C and 55°C for 5000 cycles.

RESULTS

SEM observation showed that honeycomb-shaped pores formed on the surface of machined CP-Ti after GB/AC treatment, whereas a uniform net-like pattern formed after GB/AH treatment. In descending order, the surface roughness was GB, GB/AC, and GB/AH. The GB/AH group showed the highest SBS among all the treatments. As for primers, ALP group showed the highest SBS, while the RCP group showed the lowest. GB followed by ALP presented the highest SBS.

CONCLUSION

A fine, uniform network structure was formed on the surface of CP-Ti following GB/AH treatment, providing an effective micromechanical interlocking mechanism for resin bonding. At the same time, after AH treatment, the -OH formed on the surface of the machined CP-Ti triggered a chemical reaction with the acid monomers in the resin adhesives, creating a chemical bond. As a result, GB/AH treatment significantly improved the bond strength relative to GB/AC treatment. In addition, ALP treatment facilitated the formation of hydrogen bonds, which further improved the chemical bond strength. Finally, the combination of the effects mentioned above resulted in the most robust bond between machined CP-Ti and the resin adhesives.

Effect of metal type and surface treatment on shear bond strength of resin cement (in vitro study)

BACKGROUND

Resin-bonded fixed partial dentures appeared to prevent the excessive preparation of dental tissue. Investigation of surface treatments to improve the bond of resin cements to metals may contribute to the longevity of these restorations. Due to the potential lack of ideal preparation form, the type of alloy and its surface pretreatment may have clinically relevant correlations with the retentive strength of castings to minimally retentive preparations.

AIM

The aim of this search is to study the bonding resin cement strength to different types of the metal alloy due to the surface treatment.

PURPOSE

Evaluate the effects of two different surface treatments on shear bond strength (SBS) between a palladium-silver alloy (Pb-Ag) and commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) cast alloy with resin luting cements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 120 cylinders having 5 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height were divided into two different main groups of metal type: 60 cylinders cast from CP Ti Grade I (Tritan - Reintitan - Germany-Dentaurum) as a base metal and 60 cylinders cast from Pb-Ag (Status-Yamakin, Japan) as a noble metal. 30 cylinders from each type were embedded in acrylic resin, and the rest were left without embedded in acrylic resin. All of the cylinders were smoothed with silicon carbide papers and sandblasting with 50-μm aluminum oxide. Specimens of each metal type were divided into two subgroups, which received one of the following luting techniques: (1) Multilink (Ivoclar Vivadent), (2) Multilink (Ivoclar Vivadent) plus metal zirconia primer (MZP). Every two cylinders from the same metal type and surface treatment were bonded to each other. All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h and then thermal cycled (500 cycles, 5-55°C). After thermal cycling, the specimens were stored in 37°C distilled water for an additional 24 h before being tested in shear strength. Data (MPa) were analyzed using T-s tests to study the significance of various - means among groups and perform a comparison between each two groups of them.

RESULTS

The T-s tests indicated significant effect of combination of the sandblasting technique (aluminum oxide particles 50 μm) with the application of primer MZP before using resin cement (P < 0.05) independent of the metal type used. The metal type did not significantly affect SBS for any of the compared surface pretreatments.

CONCLUSION

Metal primer application significantly enhanced SBS to base and a noble metal. No significant differences in shear strength were found between alloys.

Effect of adhesion promoting monomer addition to MMA-TBBO resin on bonding to pure palladium

This study evaluated the effects of combined use of metal primers and modified monomers on the bonding of MMA-TBBO resins to pure palladium (Pd). Bonding surface was polished with 600-grit silicon carbide paper and primed with one of these four metal primers: V-Primer, M. L. Primer, Metaltite, or Alloy Primer. Four monomers, including three modified ones, were added to MMATBBO resin. One was a methyl methacrylate monomer containing no adhesion promoting monomers, while the other two modified monomers contained the functional monomer of either V-Primer or Alloy Primer. Bonded specimens were prepared by incremental build-up of MMA-TBBO resin on primed Pd surfaces. Shear bond strengths were measured after thermal cycling. Bonding to Pd was significantly improved when modified monomer containing the functional monomer of Alloy Primer was used in combination with M. L. Primer or Metaltite applied on the bonding surface.

Dental cements for definitive luting: a review and practical clinical considerations

Dental cement used to attach an indirect restoration to a prepared tooth is called a luting agent. A clinically relevant discussion of conventional and contemporary definitive luting agents is presented in this article. Physical properties are listed in table form to assist in comparison and decision-making. Additional subtopics include luting agent requirements, classifications, retention and bonding, cement considerations for implant-supported teeth, and fatigue failure.

An evaluation of the performance of cast gold bonded restorations in clinical practice, a retrospective study

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the performance of cast gold bonded restorations in clinical practice.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The records of all patients treated with cast gold bonded restorations between 1997 and 2004 of The Dental Hospital of Newcastle upon Tyne were reviewed. The following data were recorded: sex of patient, location of teeth (anterior or posterior), position of teeth (upper or lower) and type of cement (glass ionomer, zinc phosphate or resin cement). The survival time was calculated for each restoration; and the reason for failure (either debond or change of treatment plan) identified for each case. The restorations were stratified according to the age of the patient into 10-year age bands and survival analysis was used to identify variables associated with increased risk of failure.

RESULTS

Restorations luted with resin cement showed the highest rate of survival after 7 years of follow-up. The alternative lutes had significantly worse survival (p<0.05). Restorations on anterior teeth had poorer survival than on posterior teeth but there were no differences between those placed in the mandible and the maxilla.

CONCLUSIONS

Within the limitations of this study resin cements are most appropriate for this type of restoration with 80% survival at 7 years. Restorations placed on posterior teeth survived better.
