Comparison of the accuracy of different types of bite recordings - an in vitro study

OBJECTIVES

Reconstruction of a three-dimensional jaw position determined by a bite recording is an important aspect of prosthetic therapy. Different materials are used for this purpose. In the dental technical workflow, recordings are used to mount a lower jaw cast in a patient-like spatial position relative to the upper jaw cast. We evaluated the accuracy of positioning under the influence of different jaw positions and materials.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In an experimental setup, comprising an articulator, a pair of metal casts, and an optoelectronic measurement system, the spatial position of the incisal point and two condylar points were measured. To evaluate the accuracy of repeated repositioning of casts in the technical workflow, 324 measurements were taken from 108 recordings, consisting of silicone bite-stops made of addition curing silicone with 95 shore hardness, acrylic wafers, and wax recordings. The recordings were obtained in four jaw relations differing in vertical and protrusive components.

RESULTS

Of the three materials/material combinations examined, silicone showed the most consistent results across all measurements, followed by the acrylic wafer system, and then wax recordings. Generally, recordings with smaller gaps between the jaws and no protrusive components showed greater deviations compared to jaw positions with greater protrusion and higher vertical dimensions.

CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

To achieve reliable model mounting with high accuracy, recordings should include the use of a frontal jig and four small recording platelets made of silicone, especially if only a slight elevation of the vertical dimension is needed.

Assessment of the Capability to Accurately Capture the Vertical Relationship by the Various Bite Registration Materials

Background

This research study aimed to evaluate and compare the capability of four various bite registration materials to reproduce precise interocclusal relationships in the vertical dimension.

Materials and Methods

Ideal maxillary and mandibular casts were mounted on the semi-adjustable articulator in maximum intercuspation after mock tooth preparation on 46, 47, and 48. Models were scanned by the Medit T500 Dental Lab Scanner, and initial reading was noted at the predetermined points. Ten interocclusal bite registrations were made using four materials (CADbite, Jet Bite, Ramitec, and Aluwax). The mandibular model was demounted and again remounted using the interocclusal records, and the final reading was noted after scanning.

Results

Ramitec showed superior results when compared to polyvinyl bite registration material and Aluwax, but the differences between Ramitec, CADbite, and Jet Bite were nonsignificant.

Conclusions

Although all four materials are suitable for clinical use, elastomeric materials showed superior results. In that, polyether was found to be the best.

Evaluation of dimensional stability, compressive resistance, and detail reproduction of thermoplastic resin (BDIMPRESS), elastomeric and composite bite registration material: An in vitro study

Aim

The fabrication of an accurate prosthesis depends mainly on precise recording of the maxillo-mandibular relationship of the patient and transferring it to the articulator. BDIMPRESS is a new thermoplastic material that has been proposed as a potential material to be used as an inter-occlusal registration, but there has been no literature evidence regarding its application as a bite registration. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the dimensional stability, detail reproduction, and compressive resistance of new interocclusal recording material with other two commonly used materials.

Settings and Design

In Vitro Comparative study.

Materials and Methods

The study was conducted according to ADA Specification standards of testing for dimensional stability, detail reproduction and compressive resistance. Specimens were prepared for three different materials (Thermoplastic resin, Polyvinyl siloxane, and Bis- acrylic) with 12 samples each.

Statistical Analysis Used

One way ANOVA was done for statistical analysis.

Results

Polyvinyl siloxane material was dimensionally stable (mean at 1 hr: 24.928 mm; 24 hrs: 24.919 mm & 48 hrs: 24.912 mm) followed by Bis- acrylic material (mean at 1 hr: 24.851 mm; 24 hrs: 24.825 mm & 48 hrs: 24.815 mm). On one way ANOVA, strong significance was observed between groups (P = 0.00). Thermoplastic resin showed higher amount of detail reproduction with 10 (out of 12 samples) samples showing satisfactory results. While bis- acrylic material showed the least compressive resistance (Strain %: 0.484%; Displacement- 0.0990mm). One-way ANOVA showed presence of significance between the groups (P = 0.024).

Conclusion

Polyvinyl siloxane showed superior dimensional stability, thermoplastic resin showed better detail reproduction and bis- acrylic showed high resistance to compression over other materials.

Accuracy and dimension stability of scannable versus conventional interocclusal registration materials: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Scientific data to support scannable and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM)-compatible interocclusal registration materials are lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the ability of different registration materials (conventional versus scannable) to record maxillary-mandibular relationships and compare the dimensional stability of these records after storage times of 1 hour and 48 hours.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Six groups of interocclusal registration materials were tested: 3 conventional (Registrado X-tra, Futar D Fast, and O-Bite) and 3 scannable (Registrado Scan, Futar Cut & Trim Fast, and O-Bite Scan). Eight registrations were made for each group by using a custom-made device with a dial gauge to measure vertical discrepancies. Records were stored at room temperature, and discrepancies measured after 1 hour and 48 hours. The data were statistically analyzed with the Wilcoxon test with respect to time and the Kruskal-Wallis test with respect to materials, followed by the Mann-Whitney test with the Bonferroni-Holm correction (α=.05).

RESULTS

The median vertical discrepancies ranged from -2 μm (FS) to 11 μm (O-Bite) after 1 hour and from 3 μm (Futar Cut & Trim Fast) to 13 μm (Registrado X-tra and O-Bite) after 48 hours. A statistically significant difference (P<.001) was found between the results after 1 hour and 48 hours for all materials. All scannable interocclusal registration materials showed significantly lower vertical discrepancies than the corresponding conventional materials after 1 hour and 48 hours (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

All registration materials showed vertical discrepancies that might be clinically acceptable. Vertical discrepancies increased after 48 hours of storage for all materials but were still clinically acceptable.

What Materials and Reproducible Techniques May Be Used in Recording Centric Relation? Best Evidence Consensus Statement

PURPOSE

The purpose of this Best Evidence Consensus Statement was to evaluate the existing literature relative to two focus questions: What are the techniques used and their reproducibility in recording centric relation (CR) in a dentate and partially dentate population and what effect do different recording materials have on the reproducibility of CR?

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Keywords used in the initial search were: CR, interocclusal records, CR accuracy, CR reproducibility, and CR technique. The search was then limited to Systematic Reviews, Randomized Controlled Studies, Meta-analyses, and Clinical Trials.

RESULTS

Initial search related to the selected search terms resulted in more than 3500 articles. When subsequent search was limited to Systematic Reviews, Randomized Controlled Studies, and Meta-Analysis and Clinical Trials, this resulted in 291 articles selected for further analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

Techniques using chin point guidance, bimanual manipulation, power centric, Gothic arch tracing, leaf gauge, and anterior deprogramming devices to record CR can all be comparable in precision and clinical accuracy in regards to clinical relevance. Practitioner experience and familiarity with a particular technique is critical for accuracy when recording CR. Polyvinyl siloxane and polyether consistently performed better in the broad range of studies on recording materials. Virtual capture of CR could serve as a comparable recording medium but requires further clinical study.

Evaluation of the Elastic Properties of Thirteen Silicone Interocclusal Recording Materials

Background. Addition silicones are popular as dental impression materials and are used in bite registration procedures. Objective. This study aimed to compare the postsetting elasticities and other mechanical properties of thirteen addition silicone interocclusal recording materials. Materials and Methods. The following materials were investigated: Colorbite D, Futar D, Genie Bite, Jet Blue Bite fast, Memoreg 2, O-Bite, Occlufast Rock, Omni-Bite Plus, Regidur i, Registrado X-tra, Regofix transparent, StoneBite, and Variotime Bite. Thirty specimens of each material were tested. The elasticities and strengths of the materials were measured with a universal testing machine, and computer software was used to determine the E-moduli, ultimate tensile strengths, and ultimate elongations of the specimens. Results. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p ≤ 0.05). The statistics revealed that the mean E-modulus values varied significantly across the materials (p = 0.000) and were highest for the StoneBite and Registrado X-tra and lowest for the Regofix transparent. The ultimate tensile strengths were highest for the Regofix transparent and Registrado X-tra (p = 0.000) and lowest for the Jet Blue Bite fast and Memoreg 2 (p = 0.000). The elongation percentages at the point of breaking varied significantly across the materials (p = 0.000); the lowest value was observed for the StoneBite, whereas the Regofix transparent nearly doubled original length. Conclusions. The authors concluded that materials with the high E-moduli and great ultimate tensile strengths may be most useful clinically. Registrado X-tra and StoneBite best met these criteria.

A Comparative Study to Evaluate the Compression Resistance of Different Interocclusal Recording Materials: An In Vitro Study

Recording and transferring of accurate existing occlusal records is of prime importance for a successful restoration. An ideal occlusal registration material should provide minimal resistance to mandibular closure during the registration of maxillomandibular relationships. Interocclusal bite registration materials are partly responsible for accurate precision and occlusal quality of final prosthetic restorations when used for mounting casts on the articulators. The aim of selecting this study is to compare different types of recent interocclusal recording materials and to find the best among them which can resist a constant compressive load and will give the least inaccuracies. In the present study compressive resistance of four interocclusal recording materials viz. Imprint bite, Vitual refill, Jet bite and Ramitec at various thickness (2, 5, 10 and 20 mm) when subjected to a constant compressive load of 25 N was studied. The thickness of the interocclusal recoding materials were selected to simulate various clinical situations. For standardization, the specimens were stored at room temperature for 24 h to simulate the time between clinical and laboratory phases, N = 20 specimens from each group was selected (making a total sample size of N = 80). The SPSS version 17 has been used, two way ANOVA was applied to compare different types of recent interocclusal recording materials, p value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. A total of 80 samples were fabricated. Results of two-way analysis of variance (p ≤ 0.05) indicated that there was a significant difference in compressive resistance among the materials of each thickness. The 2 mm thickness specimens showed the least compression and 20 mm thickness specimen showed maximum compression under a constant load of 25 N for all the four materials tested. Virtual Refill bite registration material showed the least compression value than Imprint bite polyvinylsiloxane registration material, Ramitec polyether bite registration material and Jet bite polyvinylsiloxane registration material with negligible error of 0.04 mm found in 2 mm thickness. The results of foregoing study showed that Virtual refill having greater resistance to compression than other interocclusal recording material at various thickness. It exhibit minimal distortion during compression and give clinician the opportunity to make only minimal adjustments to the restorations that were delivered from the laboratory and avoid unnecessary use of chairtime, or repetition of some clinical and technical stages.
