Correlations between color differences based on three color-difference formulas using dental shade guide tabs

The impact of various substrates, ceramic shades, and brands on the ultimate color and masking capacity of highly translucent monolithic zirconia: an in vitro study

This study aimed to examine the impact of substrates, ceramic shades, and brands on the color and masking ability of highly translucent monolithic zirconia (HTMZ) using CIELab and CIEΔE2000 metrics. A total of 156 1-mm thick HTMZ disks in shades A1, A2, and A3 were produced using Dental Direkt and Kerox zirconia brands. Four 3-mm thick substrates (nickel-chromium alloy, non-precious gold alloy (NPG), zirconia shade A2, and resin composite shade A2) were prepared. HTMZ disks were overlaid on these substrates, and color measurements were taken with a spectrophotometer. Color differences (ΔE) were analyzed using CIELab and CIEΔE2000 formulas. The influence of brand, shade, substrate, and their interactions on ΔE values was assessed with a General Linear Model (GLM) and LSD pairwise comparison test. Spearman's correlation test examined the relationship between CIELab and CIEΔE2000 values. Results indicated that ΔEab was significantly influenced by substrate type and shade, while ΔE2000 was also affected by the ceramic brand. Mean color differences across ceramic-substrate groups were within clinically acceptable and perceptible ranges (clinically perceptible: ∆Eab ≥ 1.3 and ∆E2000 ≥ 0.8; clinically acceptable: 0.8 < ∆E2000 ≤ 1.8 and 1.3 < ∆Eab ≤ 2.7), except for NPG, which had ΔE values exceeding the perceptible range (ΔE2000: 1.1 ± 0.11 to 1.8 ± 0.31; ΔEab: 1.61 ± 0.15 to 2.16 ± 0.36). A significant correlation (r = 0.974, P < 0.001) was found between ΔEab and ΔE2000. Various ceramic brands and shades led to notable ΔE variations, yet average color differences within all ceramic-substrate groups remained clinically acceptable. Both ΔEab and ΔE2000 were reliable methods with a strong correlation for measuring color differences.

Effect of carbamide peroxide bleaching on enamel characteristics and susceptibility to further discoloration

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Whether tooth whitening alters the surface topography of enamel causing an increase in surface roughness that could increase susceptibility to restaining is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate whether immersing enamel in common solutions produces a color change of ΔE greater than 2; whether the highest concentration carbamide peroxide bleaching agent produces the greatest ΔE; whether bleaching increases the susceptibility to further staining by common solutions; and whether morphologic changes to the enamel surface are observed after staining and bleaching as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Forty-five extracted human teeth were immersed in 5 solutions (wine, coffee, tea, soda, and water) for 15 days at 80°C, and the change in ΔE was assessed with a colorimeter. The teeth were bleached using different concentrations of carbamide peroxide (20%, 35%, and 44%) and ΔE was measured at different time intervals. The teeth were then restained with the same solutions. The ΔE after initial staining was compared with the ΔE after bleaching and restaining of the same teeth. SEM was performed at baseline, after staining, bleaching, and restaining to evaluate the changes in the enamel surface topography. EDS was used to determine the elemental composition of tooth surfaces after restaining.

RESULTS

All liquids caused a ΔE greater than 2 after 15 days. The concentration of bleaching agent was not significantly associated with ΔE for any stain types. No significant difference was found in the rate of staining between initial staining and restaining after bleaching. However, a significant effect of time was found for the staining, where the overall ΔE increased by 0.34 for each day in the solution (P<.001). SEM images showed no major changes to enamel topography after bleaching. However, a coating was noted on teeth stained with wine and tea, which had different elemental compositions when compared with the tooth surface.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on SEM observation, bleaching teeth with carbamide peroxide does not increase the susceptibility of enamel to staining and does not alter the topography of the enamel. Using higher bleaching concentrations did not increase tooth whitening as a function of time.

Power functions improving the performance of color-difference formulas

Color-difference formulas modified by power functions provide results in better agreement with visually perceived color differences. Each of the modified color-difference formulas proposed here adds only one relevant parameter to the corresponding original color-difference formula. Results from 16 visual data sets and 11 color-difference formulas indicate that the modified formulas achieve an average decrease of 5.7 STRESS (Standardized Residual Sum of Squares) units with respect to the original formulas, signifying an improvement of 17.3%. In particular, for these 16 visual data sets, the average decrease for the current CIE/ISO recommended color-difference formula CIEDE2000 modified by an exponent 0.70 was 5.4 STRESS units (17.5%). The improvements of all modified color-difference formulas with respect to the original ones held for each of the 16 visual data sets and were statistically significant in most cases, particularly for all data sets with color differences close to the threshold. Results for 2 additional data sets with color pairs in the blue and black regions of the color space confirmed the usefulness of the proposed power functions. The main reason of the improvements found for the modified color-difference formulas with respect to the original color-difference formulas seems to be the compression provided by power functions.

Perceived color shift of ceramics according to the change of illuminating light with spectroradiometer

PURPOSE

Perceived color of ceramics changes by the spectral power distribution of ambient light. This study aimed to quantify the amount of shifts in color and color coordinates of clinically simulated seven all-ceramics due to the switch of three ambient light sources using a human vision simulating spectroradiometer.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

CIE color coordinates, such as L*, a* and b*,of ceramic specimens were measured under three light sources, which simulate the CIE standard illuminant D65 (daylight), A (incandescent lamp), and F9 (fluorescent lamp). Shifts in color and color coordinate by the switch of lights were determined. Influence of the switched light (D65 to A, or D65 to F9), shade of veneer ceramics (A2 or A3), and brand of ceramics on the shifts was analyzed by a three-way ANOVA.

RESULTS

Shifts in color and color coordinates were influenced by three factors (P<.05). Color shifts by the switch to A were in the range of 5.9 to 7.7 ΔE*_abunits, and those by the switch to F9 were 7.7 to 10.2; all of which were unacceptable (ΔE*_ab > 5.5). When switched to A, CIE a* increased (Δa*: 5.6 to 7.6), however, CIE b* increased (Δb*: 4.9 to 7.8) when switched to F9.

CONCLUSION

Clinically simulated ceramics demonstrated clinically unacceptable color shifts according to the switches in ambient lights based on spectroradiometric readings. Therefore, shade matching and compatibility evaluation should be performed considering ambient lighting conditions and should be done under most relevant lighting condition.
