Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Standard surgical and prosthodontic protocols for managing partially dentate patients with implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to determine clinical and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in patients provided with ISRPDs in distal edentulous arches based on different surgical and prosthodontic protocols. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic and manual literature search was conducted in 3 databases, PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and Cochrane Library, for clinical studies on distal extension ISRPDs related to clinical and patient-reported outcomes. Kennedy Class I and II arches described in articles published from January 2000 to December 2023 were included. Clinical parameters regarding implant type, location, loading protocols, and implant survival rate and PROMs including masticatory performance, esthetics, and overall satisfaction were compared. The risk of bias was determined by using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2.0 (RoB 2.0). RESULTS An initial total of 103 studies were identified, but only 11 articles were selected after implementing the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Ten studies evaluated PROMs, and 6 studies evaluated clinical outcomes (5 studies evaluated both). The implant survival rate ranged from 91.7% to 100%, with no clear differentiation among the studies with immediate or delayed loading protocols. Most studies described implants positioned in the molar region. In general, patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) improved significantly with ISRPDs compared with conventional removable partial dentures (RPDs) or RPDs with healing abutments. Posttreatment clinical outcomes revealed stable peri-implant health with no significant bone loss or prosthetic complications. No specific implant configuration, including implant type and location or attachment system, appeared to be better than another. Ball attachments were the commonly used attachments. Two studies were of high risk and 3 studies of low risk. The remaining 6 studies were judged to have some concerns based on the RoB 2.0 analysis. CONCLUSIONS Providing an ISRPD improved patient satisfaction, OHRQoL, and the clinical outcomes in distal extension situations, with most studies positioning the implants in the molar region. The type of attachment did not significantly affect the outcomes, although ball attachments were the most used attachment in ISRPDs.

Abstract
PURPOSE This scoping review aimed to systematically map research regarding implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs), and identify existing gaps in knowledge. STUDY SELECTION Two reviewers independently conducted a search of the MEDLINE-PubMed and Scopus databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for Scoping Review and included articles published in English up to August 31, 2022, including human studies, reviews, and in vitro studies. Expert opinions, animal studies, and clinical studies involving complete overdentures were excluded, and ten aspects for establishing the treatment strategy for IARPDs were examined. RESULTS One hundred and twelve articles were chosen. There were two treatment modalities: IARPDs retained by implant- and tooth-supported surveyed single crowns (SCs) or fixed partial dentures (FPDs). In IARPDs retained by tooth-supported surveyed SCs or FPDs, the survival rate of dental implants for IARPDs was relatively higher with a wide range of marginal bone loss and many complications, but with improved functional performance, oral health-related quality of life, and patient satisfaction. There were limited data on survival or success rates and designs of IARPDs, attachment selections, length and diameter, inclination, placement sites, and loading protocols of implants, regardless of prosthetic types. There was limited information on maxillary IARPDs except for survival rates of implants. CONCLUSIONS Although IARPDs could become a useful treatment strategy, there is limited scientific consensus with gaps in knowledge about their use. Additional well-designed clinical and in vitro studies are necessary to scientifically establish IARPDs as definitive prostheses in implant dentistry.

Abstract
Removable partial dentures (RPDs) offer a broad range of aesthetics and restorative functions for partially edentulous patients. This systematic review examines patients' satisfaction rates and the factors that influence RPD satisfaction. This systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews. A systematic literature search was done on PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using preset inclusion criteria. A total of 923 non-duplicate articles were screened, and 35 were included in this review. Among the included studies, RPDs generally exhibited high satisfaction rates, with reported rates ranging between 50% and 81%. Several factors influenced satisfaction. Age played a major role, with older adults expressing higher satisfaction. Gender differences were also noted, especially in appearance satisfaction where women were more satisfied with RPDs than men. Prior experience with RPDs correlated positively with overall satisfaction. The number and location of missing teeth, as well as the type of RPD (metal vs. flexible), significantly influenced satisfaction levels. Flexible dentures were more satisfactory than metal RPDs. Attachments, such as magnetic attachments and implants, increased satisfaction. Patient complaints, encompassing pain, aesthetics, and cleanliness, were identified as common sources of dissatisfaction. The results underscore the significance of customizing RPD treatment to individual needs, considering factors that influence RPD satisfaction. Recognizing the importance of influential factors such as age, gender RPD experience, etc., for clinicians seeking to optimize patient outcomes in RPD therapy is crucial.

Effect of Number and Location on Stress Distribution of Mini Dental Implant-Assisted Mandibular Kennedy Class I Removable Partial Denture: Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis. Abstract
Purpose. To investigate effects of number and location on patterns of von Mises stress distribution and volume average stress on abutment tooth, edentulous ridge, mini dental implant, and surrounding bone of mini dental implant-assisted mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial denture. Materials and Methods. Eight three-dimensional finite element models of mandibular Kennedy class I with different numbers and locations of mini dental implants were constructed. Mini dental implants were generated in the area of second premolar, first molar, and second molar, respectively. A static load of 400 N was applied on all models. The von Mises stress and volumetric average stress were calculated by three-dimensional finite element analysis. Result. The minimum volumetric average stress of abutment tooth was found in the model, where there was one mini dental implant at the second molar position and 2 mini dental implants at first molar and second molar positions. The model with three mini dental implants had reduced volumetric average stress of abutment tooth, which was not different from the model with two mini dental implants. However, the minimum volumetric average stress of mini dental implant and surrounding bone were found when three mini dental implants were applied, followed by two and one mini dental implants, respectively. Conclusion. Placing at least one mini dental implant at a second molar position can help reduce stress transferred to the abutment tooth. Stresses around each implant and surrounding bone reduced with increased numbers of mini dental implants.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to compare implant‐supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) with distal extension removable partial dentures (DERPDs) in terms of patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs: patients' quality of life and satisfaction) and to determine mechanical and biological complications associated with ISRPDs. Material and Methods An electronic search was performed on four databases to identify studies treating Kennedy class I or II edentulous patients and which compared ISRPDs with DERPDs in terms of PROMS and studies, which evaluated mechanical and biological complications associated ISRPDs. Two authors independently extracted data on quality of life, patient satisfaction, and biomechanical complications from these studies. The risk of bias was assessed for each study, and for PROMs, the authors performed a meta‐analysis by using a random‐effects model. Results Thirteen articles were included based on the selection criteria. The difference in mean scores for quality of life (30.5 ± 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 24.9–36.1) and patient satisfaction (−20.8 ± 0.2; 95% CI, −23.7 to −17.8) between treatments with conventional and implant‐supported removable dentures was statistically significant (p < .05). Implant‐supported removable dentures improved patients' overall quality of life and satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications, such as clasp adjustment, abutment or implant loosening, marginal bone resorption, and peri‐implant mucositis, were noted in ISRPDs during patient follow‐up. Studies assessing PROMs were very heterogeneous (I2 = 65%, p = .85; I2 = 75%, p = .88). Conclusions ISRPDs significantly improved quality of life and patient satisfaction. Some mechanical and biological complications have been associated with ISRPDs treatment, requiring regular monitoring of patients to avoid the occurrence of these complications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the clinical performance of tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures in terms of abutment survival in relation to the attachment system used. METHODS An electronic search in MEDLINE/PubMed Web of Science and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases was performed. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Survival rates after 3 years and 5 years, loss, and complication rates per 100 years were estimated by Poisson regression. RESULTS A total of twelve studies were included; eleven studies were used for the meta-analysis. Survival analysis for mixed attachments showed an estimated survival rate of 100% after 3 years and 5 years. For uniform attachments, the estimated survival rate was 99.3% after 3 years and 98.8% after 5 years. Tooth abutment survival analysis for mixed attachments estimated a survival rate of 95% after 3 years and 91.7% after 5 years: Uniform attachments reached a survival rate of 97.2% after 3 years and 95.4% after 5 years. The prosthetic survival rate was 100% for mixed and uniform abutments after 3 years and 5 years of function. CONCLUSIONS Tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures can be considered as a reliable option with excellent prosthetic and implant survival rates and favorable rates for the abutments after 3-year and 5-year follow-ups. Complications may be reduced when 5 or more abutments are used. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures are a favorable and potential alternative to restore a partially edentulous arch by optimizing the number and distribution of abutments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) of implants in IC-RPDs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy implants were placed and used as surveyed crowns in 30 RPDs. The survival rates and MBL around implants based on multiple variables, e.g., position, sex, age, opposing dentitions, splinting, type of used retainer, and first year bone loss, were analyzed. Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) regarding functional/esthetic improvement after IC-RPD treatment, and complications were also inspected. RESULTS The 100% implant survival rates were observed, and 60 of those implants showed MBL levels less than 1.5 mm. No significant differences in MBL of implants were observed between implant positions (maxilla vs. mandible; P = .341) and type of used retainers (P = .630). The implant MBL of greater than 0.5 mm at 1 year showed significantly higher MBL after that (P < .001). Splinted implant surveyed crowns showed lower MBL in the maxilla (splinted vs. non-splinted; P = .037). There were significant esthetic/functional improvements observed after treatment, but there were no significant differences in esthetic results based on implant position (maxilla vs. mandible). Implants in mandible showed significantly greater improvement in function than implants in the maxilla (P = .002). Prosthetic complication of IC-RPD was not observed frequently. However, 2 abutment teeth among 60 were failed. The bone loss of abutment teeth was lower than MBL of implants in IC-RPDs (P = .001). CONCLUSION Class I RPD connected to residual teeth and strategically positioned implants as surveyed crowns can be a viable treatment modality.

Abstract
Objectives The present pilot study analyzed two abutment types (a retentive ball and a non‐retentive dome) in implant‐assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) on 6 mm short implants with respect to clinical, radiological, and patient‐reported outcomes (PROs), during the first year. Materials and Methods Two implants were placed bilaterally in mandibular molar sites, converting existing free‐end removable partial dentures (RPDs) to IARPDs. Twelve subjects were randomized to initially receive either the dome (Group A, n = 6) or the ball abutment (Group B, n = 6). After eight weeks, the abutments were exchanged. After another 8 weeks, the participants were given the choice of one of the abutments. Mean values and standard deviations (SD) were calculated, and random‐effect linear regression analyses were applied to analyze marginal bone level alterations and PROs (α < .05). Results Twelve participants were included in the study; however, one dropout occurred. Patient ratings increased significantly in both study groups. The majority of the participants (82%) ultimately chose the ball abutment. The implant survival rate was 100%, and the success rate was 90.9% twelve months after implant placement (mean peri‐implant bone‐loss: −1.2; SD: 0.6 mm) without a statistically significant difference between the study groups, in terms of clinical‐ and radiological outcomes. Conclusion Placing 6 mm short implants at mandibular molar sites of RPD wearers seems to be a viable treatment option, based on this investigation with a short‐term follow‐up. Although only minor differences between the two abutments were observed, patients seem to prefer the ball over the dome abutment.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Healing abutments and attachments have been used for implant-supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs). However, the effects of these abutments and attachments on the clinical outcomes of the implants and prostheses are elusive because of the lack of standardized research protocols. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the clinical outcomes of mandibular distal extension ISRPDs with healing abutments and attachments by analyzing qualified studies. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic and manual literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases including articles published in English from 1980 to 2020. Publications of clinical outcome studies on the mandibular distal extension ISRPDs with healing abutments or attachments were screened by inclusion and exclusion criteria. Clinical outcomes of removable partial dentures (RPDs) and ISRPDs with different types of abutments or attachments were compared by using patient-reported outcome measures, implant survival rate, masticatory performance, and implant- or prosthesis-related complications. Study designs and clinical outcome data were extracted and analyzed. The evidence of the selected studies and degree of recommendation were made according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-based Medicine, and the risk of bias of the studies was assessed based on Newcastle-Ottawa criteria. RESULTS Of 541 articles initially identified after removing duplicate records, 11 articles were selected by applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, by inter-viewer agreement, and by hand searching. Nine prospective cohort studies, 1 retrospective cohort study, and 1 randomized controlled trial were included with evidence levels assessed at 1b, 2b, and 2c. The risk of bias varied from 5 to 8 out of 9. Patient overall satisfaction, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) scores, and masticatory ability were significantly improved for ISRPDs with either healing abutments, ball, or LOCATOR attachments when compared with RPDs. The implant survival rate varied from 92% to 97% at 2 to 10 years for ball attachment and was 100% at 1 year for LOCATOR attachment-supported ISRPDs. Marginal bone loss (MBL) varied from 0 to 1 mm in all studies, although LOCATOR attachments had significantly less MBL compared with ball attachments. The maximal pocket depth and bleeding on probing index around implants at 1 year were 1.7 to 1.8 mm and 0.1 to 0.3. Loose healing caps were the main mechanical complication of implants. There were more prosthetic complications in ISRPDs with ball attachments than RPDs at 10-year follow-up, including gold matrix loosening, loss of retention, and denture base fractures. No direct comparisons were made of patient-reported outcomes or prosthetic complications between ball and LOCATOR attachment-supported ISRPDs. CONCLUSIONS Healing abutments and attachments (ball or LOCATOR) improved patient-reported outcomes and the masticatory function of mandibular distal extension ISRPDs. However, insufficient evidence was found to determine the relative effectiveness of different attachment systems on the clinical outcomes of mandibular distal extension ISRPDs. Abutment loosening was the most frequent mechanical complication for healing abutments. More prosthetic complications were associated with ball attachment-supported ISRPDs than RPDs. The major weaknesses of this systematic review were the relatively moderate level of evidence and the publication language, since implant attachments are used in many non-English speaking countries.

Abstract
The studies on implant-crown-retained removable partial dentures (IC-RPDs) for edentulism are scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate survival rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) of IC-RPDs compared to implant overdentures (IODs) in mandibular edentulism. Variables that influenced survival and marginal bone loss (MBL) of implants in both treatment modalities were analyzed and the functional/esthetic satisfaction of patients as well as prosthetic complications were also observed. Eighteen IC-RPDs with a total of 60 implant-supported survey crowns and 24 IODs with a total 94 implants retained with magnet attachments were observed. After a median observation period of 46.6 months (up to 149 months), we observed 98.3% implant survival rates for IC-RPDs and 92.5% for IODs. Kaplan–Meier survival curves based on the treatment modality showed that, at 96 months, cumulative survival rates were 98.3% in IC-RPD and 83.1% in IOD. For implant survival rates, no statistical differences were observed according to age, sex, opposing dentition, or implant positions (p = 0.515, 0.666, 0.201, 0.749, respectively). The implant MBL measurements for IC-RPD and IOD groups at the final recall check were 0.93 ± 1.22 mm and 2.12 ± 2.09 mm, respectively. Additionally, there were no significant differences between groups (p = 0.554). The implants with peri-implantitis at year 1 showed significantly higher MBL at final check-up (p < 0.001). The MBL of implants showed significant differences based on age (p = 0.008) and opposing dentition (p = 0.003). No significant differences of implant MBL were observed for the position of placed implants (p = 0.621) or sex (p = 0.666). Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) on functional and esthetic satisfaction were significantly improved after IC-RPD or IOD treatment (p < 0.001). The most frequent prosthetic complication of IC-RPD was clasp loosening, while for IOD group, it was attachment dislodgement. Within the limitations of this retrospective study, we concluded that IC-RPDs could be considered as a viable treatment option for edentulous patients who need few fixed abutments for satisfaction.

Abstract
There have been no studies of implant-crown-retained removable partial dentures (IC-RPD) for the treatment of maxillary edentulism. The purpose of this study was to perform clinical and radiographic evaluations of implants in IC-RPD compared to implant overdentures (IOD) in maxillary edentulous patients. Twenty IC-RPDs with 74 splinted implant crowns and 18 IODs with 71 implants retained with magnet attachments were observed in 38 patients. We statistically analyzed survival rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) of implants based on multiple variables including first year pathologic condition, location of placed implant, age, and sex in both treatments. Patient reported oral measurements (PROMs) regarding functional/esthetic improvement after IC-RPD or IOD treatments and prosthetic complications were also statistically analyzed. After a median observation period of 47.1 months (up to 147 months), we observed 97.3% implant survival rates for IC-RPD and 70.4% for IOD (p < 0.001). Among variables, first year pathologic condition (p < 0.001) and sex (p = 0.027) influenced implant survival rates. The MBL of implants for IC-RPD and IOD groups at the final check-up were 1.12 ± 1.19 mm and 3.31 ± 1.71 mm, respectively (p < 0.001). In both groups, patients with peri-implantitis (p < 0.001) and patients older than 65 years (p = 0.029) showed significantly higher implant MBL regardless of treatment modality. Functional and esthetic satisfaction were significantly improved (p < 0.001) after both treatments. The IOD group showed more frequent prosthetic complications compared to the IC-RPD group. Within the limitations of a retrospective study, we concluded that RPD with few splinted implant crowns is a feasible alternative treatment modality for maxillary edentulous patients with anatomical limitations.

Abstract
The main purpose of this work was to construct a clinically valid numerical model of a mandibular Kennedy class I patient rehabilitated with a conventional removable partial denture and another two with implant-assisted removable partial dentures at two different implant locations. The selected patient was classified as ASA I and its mandible geometry reconstruction was performed by the conversion of the Cone-Beam computed Tomography (CBCT) scan raw medical data into a 3D model and subsequent conversion to a CAD file by reverse engineering methods. The soft tissue and removable denture geometries were also included in the CAD model as well as implants, ball attachments and matrix. Moreover, periodontal ligament was modelled by offsetting the mesh of the root surface of each tooth. The finite element results showed that the installation of a dental implant in each of the bilateral edentulous regions helps providing support and retention to the extension bases of the Removable Partial Denture (RPD) and significantly reduces the vertical and anterior-posterior displacements, regardless of its position.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate survival rates of the implants used in implant assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was conducted on 21 patients who were treated with IARPDs. The mean follow-up period for IARPD patients ranged from 12 to 185 months (mean 47.9 months). A total of 58 implants were used for IARPDs in two different modalities: 41 for surveyed crowns and 17 for overdentures. The survival of implants was determined by clinical and radiographic evaluations considering relevant factors: location, RPD classification, opposing dentition, splinting, and implant diameter. RESULTS The survival rate of total 58 implants was 93.1%: 95.1% for implants supporting surveyed crowns and 88.2% for implants used in overdentures. Considering only the implants supporting surveyed crown, regular diameter implants showed a higher survival rate than narrow or wide diameter implants. CONCLUSION The survival rate of the implants used in IARPDs was 93.1% (surveyed crown: 95.1%, overdenture: 88.2%).

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Implant-assisted removable partial dentures (IARPDs) have been proposed as a treatment option for partially edentulous patients. However, evidence regarding the outcome of implant-assisted removable partial dentures with implant surveyed prostheses is limited. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the clinical status and complications of IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses in terms of clinical tissue condition, marginal bone resorption, and prosthetic complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS Patients treated with IARPDs combined with implant surveyed prostheses who had worn an IARPD for at least 12 months were included. Twenty-four participants (25 prostheses, 12 maxillary, and 13 mandibular) were evaluated, with 80 implants used as abutments for IARPDs. The average follow-up period was 27.6 months, and the maximum follow-up was 78 months. Implant cumulative survival rate, marginal bone resorption, probing depth, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding, plaque, calculus, and complications were evaluated. RESULTS No implant failure occurred, and all implants functioned without clinical mobility. Mean marginal bone resorption of implants at 1 year after loading was 0.77 ±0.63 mm, and mean probing depth was 3.4 ±0.1 mm. No patient developed peri-implantitis, and no implant failed. Two clasp fractures, 1 rest fracture, 1 decementation, and 1 fracture of porcelain on an implant surveyed prosthesis were detected at 12 months after loading. CONCLUSIONS Well-planned IARPDs using implant surveyed prostheses were clinically successful. Longitudinal and systematic clinical studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of the immediate and delayed loading of strategic mini-implants (MIs) on the satisfaction of patients with removable partial dentures (RPDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this multi-center randomized clinical trial, strategic MIs were inserted under 79 RPDs in 76 participants. Two questionnaires, one for the upper jaw and one for the lower jaw, were given before surgical intervention and 2 weeks, 4 months, 4.5 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after implant insertion. To estimate the loading effect (immediate vs. delayed) in terms of the odds ratio, an ordinal logistic regression model was used. The Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test, which was corrected for clusters in the patient population, was used to evaluate changes in patient satisfaction. RESULTS After 4 months, a statistically significant difference in favor of the immediate loading group was recognized in terms of the overall satisfaction score. The patient satisfaction scores recorded after 4.5 months and 1, 2, and 3 years showed substantial improvements compared with the scores recorded before implant insertion in both groups. At the item level, substantial improvements were noted in the following domains: general satisfaction, RPD retention, stability, support, eating, speaking, and aesthetics. CONCLUSIONS Strategic MIs improved the satisfaction of patients with RPDs during the medium-term follow-up period. An earlier improvement in the satisfaction of patients with RPDs was seen after immediate loading of the MIs as compared with delayed loading. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Inserting MIs under existing RPDs can improve patients' satisfaction with their RPDs in several domains.

Abstract
This case report describes the fabrication of a distal extension removable partial denture (RPD) of a 65-year-old man with implant support. Loss of fibroelasticity of the peripheral tissues and reduced mandibular vestibular sulcular depth due to a previous surgical resection and radiotherapy at the right side were the main clinical factors that created difficulty for denture retention and stability. The fabrication of a mandibular RPD supported by anterior teeth and two bilaterally placed implants in the molar area to convert from Kennedy Class 1 design to Kennedy Class 3 implant-bounded RPD is reported. Retention and stability of the denture were improved with implant support on the distal extension site of the RPD. The common clinical problems about distally extended RPDs are lack of retention and stability due to the movement around the rotational axis. Dental implant placement to the distal edentulous site minimizes the potential dislodgement of the RPD is popular. Implant-supported RPD can be suggested as an advantageous and cost-effective treatment option for the partially edentulous patients.

The functionality of a new overdenture attachment (LOCATOR R-Tx) was described for different clinical situations: a conventional mandibular implant overdenture (IOD) retained by 2 implants, a straightforward chairside maintenance procedure for replacing a worn LOCATOR (Legacy) attachment with the new LOCATOR R-Tx, and a complex clinical situation with nonideal implant positions with compromised parallelism. The LOCATOR R-Tx is an advance on the existing LOCATOR Legacy attachment and has an improved abutment head design with a more durable surface coating to prevent attachment wear and thereby reduce frequency of maintenance.

Abstract
Objective The aim was to compare esthetic outcomes, masticatory performance and a comfort of removable partial denture (RPD) wearing after receiving: clasp-retained RPD (C-RPD) or mini dental implant-retained RPD (MDI-RPD) in the mandible. Materials and Methods A sample of 88 patients (Kennedy Class I) with all posterior teeth missing and a linear support for a RPD participated. A total of 52 patients (36 females, 16 males; 56 to 84 years old) participated in the C-RPD group and 36 patients (26 females, 10 males; 43 to 81 years old) in the MDI-RPD group. All MDIs were placed adjacent to the last remaining mandibular anterior tooth or one tooth length posteriorly. The new RPDs had Co-Cr frameworks with lingual plate major connectors; the MDI-RPDs were retained by O-ball matrices and the C-RPDs with clasps. Patients answered questions at pre-treatment and post-treatment stages and after 6-months follow-up: how satisfied they had been with esthetic appearance, how confident they were while chewing hard food, how satisfied they were with food comminution and they also evaluated a comfort of RPD wearing. The 0-10 visual-analogue scale was used. Statistics included descriptive methods, t-tests and the standardized effect-size calculation. Results The MDI-RPD wearers were more satisfied with their post-treatment esthetics, food comminution, a comfort with RPDs and had better confidence while chewing than the C-RPD wearers. The MDI-RPD wearers reported larger positive effect of the treatment. The results were consistent throughout the first 6-months period. Conclusion The MDI-RPD patients showed superior outcomes than the C-RPD patients after the treatment and over the 6-month period.

Abstract
Various attachment systems have been used to facilitate the retention, stability, and support of overdentures. The low profile design, pivoting technology, and durability of the Locator attachment made it one of the commonly used tissue-supported implant-retained overdentures. It has been successfully used to retain overdentures as well as partial dentures. This article describes the uses of the new Locator R-Tx abutment and illustrates both the direct and indirect techniques used to process the denture attachment housing into the prosthesis to retain overdentures and partial dentures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term changes in the thickness of Schneiderian membranes after zygomatic implant placement using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-five consecutive patients were included in this study. All the patients underwent bilateral zygomatic implant placement. Schneiderian membrane thickness (SMT) in 49 maxillary sinuses (one sinus was not included because of early loss of the zygomatic implants) was measured using CBCT before and at least 1 year after zygomatic implant placement. Ostium patency of each sinus was also evaluated and recorded. RESULTS In total, 84 zygomatic implants and 30 regular implants were placed in included patients. Two unilateral maxillary zygomatic implants in one patient were removed 2 months after implant placement. The SMT increased from 1.03 mm (inter-quartile range: 1.57 mm) to 1.33 mm (inter-quartile range: 1.98 mm) after a median follow-up time of 23.00 months (inter-quartile range: 14 months), and the difference was statistically significant. Before zygomatic implant insertion, 24.5% (12/49) of sinuses had SMT greater than 2 mm, whereas this value was 28.6% (14/49) after zygomatic implant placement. The percentage of sinuses observed with ostium patency also increased from 2.0% (1/49) to 12.2% (6/49). CONCLUSIONS Chronic Schneiderian membrane thickening could result from zygomatic implant insertion. Intensive postoperative care and clinical and radiographic monitoring are recommended after zygomatic implant placement.

Abstract
Implant therapy is gaining presence as a prosthodontic treatment option. However, the graying of the population has led to an increase in the number of older adults requiring special consideration in implant treatment because of their systemic health problems. Additionally, with the growth of the elderly population in need of long-term care, a greater number of older adults who have received implant treatment are receiving long-term care, raising various issues that need to be addressed. In the present review article, we describe the significance of implant treatment in older adults, issues when performing implant treatment in geriatric patients, and measures to be taken when implant patients have lapsed into a state of requiring long-term care. In addition, in view of population aging, we propose an approach for applying implant treatment to older adults. This approach includes using an appropriate type of implant system depending on the remaining life expectancy and the patient's general condition, performing less invasive surgery, providing treatment using prosthetic appliances that are easy to manage and can be modified, and ensuring oral health management by providing an Implant Card to patients when the treatment is completed.

Abstract
This study was performed to make comparative analysis of the clinical findings between the two different types of the implant-assisted removable partial dentures: removable partial dentures using implant surveyed bridge as an abutment (ISBRPD) and overdenture type of removable partial denture using implant attachment (IARPD). Implant cumulative survival rate, marginal bone resorption, probing depth, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding, plaque, calculus, and complications were evaluated on 24 patients who were treated with implants in conjunction with removable partial denture and have used them for at least 1 year (ISCRPD: n = 12; IARPD: n = 12). There was no failed implant and all implants were functioning without clinical mobility. Marginal bone loss of ISCRPD (1.44 ± 0.57 mm) was significantly lower than that of IARPD (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in probing depth, peri-implant inflammation, bleeding, and plaque between the two groups (p > 0.05), while the calculus was significantly more observed in ISCRPD group than in IARPD group (p < 0.05). The retention loss of IARPD was the most common complication. Within the limits of the present study, it was found that well-planned ISBRPD was clinically appropriate. Longitudinal and systematic clinical studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract
Patients with Down syndrome can present with a variety of oral manifestations such as hypodontia, periodontal disease, premature tooth loss, reduced salivary flow, crowding of teeth in both arches, and decreased occlusal vertical dimension. The intellectual ability of people with Down syndrome varies widely. They present with a mild-to-moderate intellectual disability that restricts their ability to communicate and adjust to their environment, which can add complexity in the overall dental treatment. There is little information in the literature regarding the prosthodontic rehabilitation for patients with Down syndrome in combination with dental implant placement. An implant-assisted removable partial dental prosthesis can be a cost-effective treatment alternative for carefully chosen patients with Down syndrome. This article presents the treatment of a 44-year-old male patient with Down syndrome and a moderate intellectual disability who presented with congenital and acquired tooth loss with significant occlusal discrepancies. The treatment included a prosthodontic approach that used a single dental implant, which will be described and illustrated in this article.

Abstract
Background Acceptable short-term survival rates (>90 %) of mini-implants (diameter < 3.0 mm) are only documented for mandibular overdentures. Sound data for mini-implants as strategic abutments for a better retention of partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) are not available. Methods/design The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that immediately loaded mini-implants show more bone loss and less success than strategic mini-implants with delayed loading. In this four-center (one university hospital, three dental practices in Germany), parallel-group, controlled clinical trial, which is cluster randomized on patient level, a total of 80 partially edentulous patients with unfavourable number and distribution of remaining abutment teeth in at least one jaw will receive supplementary min-implants to stabilize their PRDP. The mini-implant are either immediately loaded after implant placement (test group) or delayed after four months (control group). Follow-up of the patients will be performed for 36 months. The primary outcome is the radiographic bone level changes at implants. The secondary outcome is the implant success as a composite variable. Tertiary outcomes include clinical, subjective (quality of life, satisfaction, chewing ability) and dental or technical complications. Discussion Strategic implants under an existing PRDP are only documented for standard-diameter implants. Mini-implants could be a minimal invasive and low cost solution for this treatment modality. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the impact of implant support on the development of shear force and bending moment in mandibular free-end base removable partial dentures (RPDs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Three theoretical test models of unilateral mandibular free-end base RPDs were constructed to represent the base of tooth replacement, as follows: Model 1: first and second molars (M1 and M2); Model 2: second premolar (P2), M1, and M2; and Model 3: first premolar (P1), P2, M1, and M2. The implant support located either at M1 or M2 sites. The occlusal loading was concentrated at each replacement tooth to calculate the stress resultants developed in the RPD models using the free-body diagrams of shear force and bending moment. RESULTS There was a trend of reduction in the peak shear force and bending moment when the base was supported by implant. However, the degree of reduction varied with the location of implant support. The moment reduced by 76% in Model 1, 58% in Model 2, and 42% in Model 3, when the implant location shifted from M1 to M2 sites. CONCLUSIONS The shear forces and bending moments subjected to mandibular free-end base RPDs were found to decrease with the addition of implant support. However, the impact of implant support varied with the location of implant in this theoretical study.

Abstract
PURPOSE This in vitro study investigated the pressure distribution of the implant-supported removable partial dentures (RPDs) with the stress-breaking attachments under the occlusal force. METHODS The experimental model of bilateral missing premolars and molars was modified from a commercial simulation model. Five pressure sensors were embedded near the bilateral first molars, first premolars, and medio-lingual alveolar crest. Two implants were placed near the second molars, and they were connected to the denture base using the following conditions: complete separation between the denture base and implant with cover screws (CRPD), flexible connection with a stress-breaking ball (SBB) attachment, and rigid connection without stress breaking with healing caps (HC). The pressure at five different areas of the soft tissue and the displacement of the RPDs were simultaneously measured, loading up to 50 N. The coefficient of variation (CV) for each connection was calculated from all data of the pressure at five areas to evaluate the pressure distribution. RESULTS The pressure on medio-lingual alveolar crest and molars of the HC was less than SBB and CRPD. In contrast, the pressure on premolars of SBB was greater than for the HC and CRPD. The CV of SBB was less than that of HC and CRPD. Denture displacement of HC and SBB was less than for CRPD. CONCLUSIONS Within the in vitro limitations, precise denture settlements and pressure distribution under the denture base could be controlled using an SBB attachment. An SBB attachment might be able to protect the implant from harmful force.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to demonstrate a successful binding of Doxy hyclate onto a titanium zirconium alloy surface. METHODS The coating was done on titanium zirconium coins in a cathodic polarization setup. The surface binding was analyzed by SEM, SIMS, UV-vis, FTIR and XPS. The in vitro biological response was tested with MC3T3-E1 murine pre-osteoblast cells after 14 days of cultivation and analyzed in RT-PCR. A rabbit tibial model was also used to confirm its bioactivity in vivo after 4 and 8 weeks healing by means of microCT. RESULTS A mean of 141 μg/cm(2) of Doxy was found firmly attached and undamaged on the coin. Inclusion of Doxy was documented up to a depth of approximately 0.44 μm by tracing the (12)C carbon isotope. The bioactivity of the coating was documented by an in vitro study with murine osteoblasts, which showed significantly increased alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin gene expression levels after 14 days of cell culture along with low cytotoxicity. Doxy coated surfaces showed increased bone formation markers at 8 weeks of healing in a rabbit tibial model. SIGNIFICANCE The present work demonstrates a method of binding the broad spectrum antibiotic doxycycline (Doxy) to an implant surface to improve bone formation and reduce the risk of infection around the implant. We have demonstrated that TiZr implants with electrochemically bound Doxy promote bone formation markers in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the levels of patient satisfaction with either conventional mandibular bilateral distal extension partial dentures or those assisted by bilateral distal implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-eight participants who were dissatisfied with their existing conventional mandibular distal extension dentures opposing complete maxillary dentures were selected for a multicentre prospective study in New Zealand, Colombia and the Netherlands. A control group of 12 participants in New Zealand received conventional mandibular partial dentures. Three test groups involving 36 participants in New Zealand (12), Colombia (12) and the Netherlands (12) received bilateral distal implants in the second molar regions. After conventional loading, the test group participants initially had healing caps placed on the distal implants providing support only, followed after approximately 6 months by ball abutments (retentive anchors) for support and retention. Patient outcomes were determined with questionnaires completed at specific stages of the study for up to 3 years. RESULTS Visual analogue scale, Likert and oral health impact questionnaires before and after treatment indicated improved results. There were significantly improved parameters of overall satisfaction, stability, chewing and appearance after 3 years (P < 0.05). There were also improvements on stability, chewing and overall satisfaction. Speech also improved, but not significantly. Ball abutments (retentive anchors) on the distal implants, as opposed to healing caps improved patient satisfaction for stability, chewing and overall satisfaction. Changing to ball abutments (retentive anchors) revealed significant improvement by participant response when evaluating parameters of stability, chewing and overall satisfaction (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Mandibular implant-assisted removable partial dentures are a preferable treatment option for patients with complaints about their conventional distal extension partial dentures.
