Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is a lack of data regarding the hygiene practices and sources of care among individuals in Yemen who wear removable complete and partial dentures. The purpose of this study was to explore the behaviors, hygiene habits, and sources of care information among patients who utilize complete and partial dentures in Yemen. MATERIALS AND METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional research design was utilized, and a sample of 217 consecutive participants who wore removable complete and/or partial dentures were enlisted. A questionnaire was employed to collect data on demographic information, educational attainment, denture habits, denture cleaning practices, and encountered difficulties. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS software, and significance was determined using chi-square tests, with a significance level of .05. RESULTS The data analysis revealed that a majority of the participants were male (72.4%) and had an average age of 65.14 years. Fifty-three percent of the participants wore partial dentures, while 34.6% wore complete dentures. Only 6.5% of the participants wore both complete and partial dentures, and 6% wore overdentures. The majority of participants (88.47%) had dentures made of acrylic material. Additionally, 43% of participants wore dentures while sleeping, and 61.3% stored their dentures in dry places without a water-filled container when not in use. The most commonly reported cleaning methods were water only (24.4%), followed by water and soap (19.4%). Furthermore, a large portion of the participants (59.4%) received denture care information from dentists. However, the majority (59%) did not visit a dentist for regular denture maintenance or any denture-related issues. The data analysis did not reveal any significant association between age or education level and denture cleaning methods. CONCLUSION This cross-sectional survey provides insight into the hygiene knowledge and practices of removable denture wearers in Yemen. The findings underscore the necessity for enhanced oral hygiene education and awareness within this population. The study offers valuable insights for oral health professionals to design targeted interventions and educational initiatives aimed at promoting proper denture care and maintenance. These efforts have the potential to enhance the oral health and overall well-being of removable denture wearers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this case report was to demonstrate the long-term effects of a multidisciplinary approach involving periodontal reconstructive surgery and strategic implant placement before orthodontic (SIMBO) treatment in a patient with severe periodontitis (e.g., stage IV/grade C). CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS The patient presented with severe periodontitis and pathologic tooth migration (PTM) without stable occlusion or occlusal support. After performing cause-related therapy, periodontal regenerative surgery, pre-orthodontic posterior implant placement, and orthodontic treatment involving anterior implant placement with papilla reconstruction, the patient achieved full-mouth rehabilitation and improvement of dental and smile esthetics. The clinical and radiographic results obtained were maintained over a 10-year period. CONCLUSION Within the limits of this as a single case, multidisciplinary treatment involving the SIMBO approach appeared to allow long-term improvement of periodontal condition, stability of the dental arches and occlusion, and esthetics in a patient with severe periodontitis, PTM and posterior bite collapse. Future studies with more subjects are needed to evaluate and validate this approach. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE When addressing periodontal disease, SIMBO approach-based multidisciplinary treatment appears safe and effective as a clinical protocol for establishing esthetic and functional rehabilitation in generalized stage IV/grade C periodontitis.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although high survival rates of implant-supported fixed partial dentures (ISFPDs) have been reported, evidence for complications, failures, and factors that interfere with their longevity is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this scoping review was to review the literature to investigate the most common failures and complications of ISFPDs. MATERIAL AND METHODS This review followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses scoping review (PRISMA ScR) guidelines, and the methodology was registered on the open science framework (osf.io/5xqkp). An electronic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and nonpeer-reviewed literature for articles published from 2013 to January 2023. Studies that evaluated the clinical performance of ISFPDs with at least 1 year of follow-up and described the concepts of failure and success were included. RESULTS The search yielded 5695 studies. Fourteen articles were included in this review for data extraction. Veneering porcelain fracture, screw fracture, and implant loss were the most common failures reported. Technical complications mainly involved screw loosening, loss of retention, and wear of the screw-access restoration. CONCLUSIONS Bruxism, mismatch of the thermal expansion coefficient, unsatisfactory support of the framework, choice of cement, shape of the titanium abutments, and extended length of the cantilever were associated with the longevity of the ISFPD. Despite the high survival rate of ISFPDs, data must be carefully interpreted because of the variation in the materials used to manufacture the ISFPD and the heterogeneity of the studies in this review.

Abstract
Different types of biomaterials have been used to fabricate carriers to deliver bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) in both dentoalveolar and maxillofacial bone regeneration procedures. Despite that absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) is considered the gold standard for BMP delivery, there is still some concerns regarding its use mainly due to its poor mechanical properties. To overcome this, novel systems are being developed, however, due to the wide variety of biomaterial combination, the heterogeneous assessment of newly formed tissue, and the intended clinical applications, there is still no consensus regarding which is more efficient in a particular clinical scenario. The combination of two or more biomaterials in different topological configurations has allowed specific controlled-release patterns for BMPs, improving their biological and mechanical properties compared with classical single-material carriers. However, more basic research is needed. Since the BMPs can be used in multiple clinical scenarios having different biological and mechanical needs, novel carriers should be developed in a context-specific manner. Thus, the purpose of this review is to gather current knowledge about biomaterials used to fabricate delivery systems for BMPs in both dentoalveolar and maxillofacial contexts. Aspects related with the biological, physical and mechanical characteristics of each biomaterial are also presented and discussed. Strategies for bone formation and regeneration are a major concern in dentistry. Topical delivery of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) allows rapid bone formation. BMPs requires proper carrier system to allow controlled and sustained release. Carrier should also fulfill mechanical requirements of bone defect sites. By using complex composites, it would be possible to develop new carriers for BMPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the clinical performance of tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures in terms of abutment survival in relation to the attachment system used. METHODS An electronic search in MEDLINE/PubMed Web of Science and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases was performed. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Survival rates after 3 years and 5 years, loss, and complication rates per 100 years were estimated by Poisson regression. RESULTS A total of twelve studies were included; eleven studies were used for the meta-analysis. Survival analysis for mixed attachments showed an estimated survival rate of 100% after 3 years and 5 years. For uniform attachments, the estimated survival rate was 99.3% after 3 years and 98.8% after 5 years. Tooth abutment survival analysis for mixed attachments estimated a survival rate of 95% after 3 years and 91.7% after 5 years: Uniform attachments reached a survival rate of 97.2% after 3 years and 95.4% after 5 years. The prosthetic survival rate was 100% for mixed and uniform abutments after 3 years and 5 years of function. CONCLUSIONS Tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures can be considered as a reliable option with excellent prosthetic and implant survival rates and favorable rates for the abutments after 3-year and 5-year follow-ups. Complications may be reduced when 5 or more abutments are used. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Tooth implant-supported removable partial dentures are a favorable and potential alternative to restore a partially edentulous arch by optimizing the number and distribution of abutments.

Abstract
PURPOSE This retrospective study evaluated the periodontal tissues of the abutment teeth of removable partial dentures (RPDs) with rigid retainers and major connectors in patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS A total of 313 patients who had been treated with RPDs, including rigid retainers and major connectors, were divided into two groups: T2D and non-T2D. The periodontal parameters and radiographic bone heights of the abutment teeth were evaluated at baseline and at a 5-year examination during supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). For patients with accessible standardized radiographs, bone density was analyzed based on the gray level (GL) using digital subtraction radiography (n = 83). RESULTS Overall, 739 abutment teeth (86 in the T2D group) of 235 patients (25 in the T2D group) were analyzed, and 95.0% (94.2% in the T2D group, and 95.2% in the non-T2D group) were maintained. The mean probing pocket depth significantly increased in both groups ( p < 0.001). There were significant changes in the radiographic bone height (p = 0.038) and GL on the side of the denture base area (p = 0.048) in the T2D group compared to those in the non-T2D group. CONCLUSIONS Regardless of T2D, RPDs with rigid retainers and major connectors could prevent the progression of periodontal disease and successfully maintain most of the abutment teeth during 5-years of SPT. However, T2D may be significantly associated with loss of bone height reduction and density on the side of the denture base area.

Abstract
Background. Dental implants are one of the most successful treatments for restoring tooth function and beauty. Identifying the causes of dental implant failure is useful and vital. This review was aimed at studying the possible role of vitamin D in early implant failure. Method and Material. This review was designed based on the PRISMA guideline. Data was collected using keywords including implant, vitamin D, deficiency, failure, dental, OR tooth in international databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Embase, until 2020. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, data were extracted and gathered in a checklist. Results. Finally, twelve studies were selected from five different countries. In 6 studies (2 animal studies and four human studies), there was no significant relationship between vitamin D deficiency and dental implant failure. In the other six studies (1 animal study and five human studies), there was a significant relationship in this regard. Conclusion. It is difficult to conclude the association between vitamin D and implant failure based on the literature’s researches. However, vitamin D appears to play an essential role in implant success through its effects on immune system modulation.

Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to evaluate the association of the denture care with oral hygiene
habits, knowledge and periodontal status geriatric patients wearing removable
partial denture (RPD) and to compare the relationship between denture cleaning
and tooth brushing frequency. Patients and methods: In total, 553 participants wearing RPD for at least 6 months and aged 65–86 years
were asked to complete a questionnaire following the clinical examination. Chisquare
analysis and Fisher’s exact test utilized to analyze the data. Results: A significant relationship was found between the frequency of smoking, denture
age, overnight denture wearing, denture stomatitis and denture cleaning (p<0.05).
54.10% of the participants reporting that they did not have information about
denture care had poor denture cleaning. Among patients brushing once per day,
26.34% had a good level of denture cleaning; whereas, this was 39.40% for those
brushing three times in a day. Conclusion: The type of advice (verbal or written) and oral hygiene habits demonstrated a
more significant impact on the cleaning level of dentures than the socioeconomic
level, smoking, overnight use, denture age. The success of denture maintenance
might depend on the patients’ knowledge of denture care and hygiene habits and
geriatric patients’ motivation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Speech impairment during the initial phase of removable partial denture (RPD) treatment can prevent patient adaptation to RPDs. This quasi-experimental study aimed to investigate the influence of the covering area of major connectors located in the mandibular anterior region on the accuracy of speech production. METHODS Fifteen adults (12 men and 3 women aged 26-40 years) with healthy dentition were recruited. Four target syllables were used for the assessments: [ʃi], [ʧi], [çi], and [ki]. There were four speaking conditions: without a connector (control), wearing lingual bar (5 mm width), wearing lingual plates (12 mm width), and wearing connectors covering the occlusal surface of lower dentition (16 mm width; CO). The accuracy of speech production was evaluated by mean appearance ratio of correct labels (MARC) and incorrect labels (MARIC) of the phonetic segments which were calculated with a speech evaluation system (VoiceAnalyzer). RESULTS The MARC in the 3 target syllables [ʃi], [ʧi], and [ki] significantly decreased with CO. For the target syllable [ʃi], the MARICs of [ʧi], [ʤi], and [çi] with CO were significantly lower than that in the control. For the target syllable [ʧi], the MARIC of [ki] with CO was significantly higher than that in the control. For the target syllable [çi], the MARIC of [gi] with CO was significantly higher than that in the control. CONCLUSION RPDs with major connectors covering the lower dentition could disturb speech production during the initial phase of RPD treatment. Prosthodontic treatment with such RPD designs requires further consideration regarding the information given to patients before starting the treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This narrative review summarizes the current evidence about the role that the fabrication and presence of dental prostheses and tooth-related factors have on the initiation and progression of gingivitis and periodontitis. FINDINGS Placement of restoration margins within the junctional epithelium and supracrestal connective tissue attachment can be associated with gingival inflammation and, potentially, recession. The presence of fixed prostheses finish lines within the gingival sulcus or the wearing of partial, removable dental prostheses does not cause gingivitis if patients are compliant with self-performed plaque control and periodic maintenance. However, hypersensitivity reactions to the prosthesis dental material can be present. Procedures adopted for the fabrication of dental restorations and fixed prostheses have the potential to cause traumatic loss of periodontal supporting tissues. Tooth anatomic factors, root abnormalities, and fractures can act as plaque-retentive factors and increase the likelihood of gingivitis and periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS Tooth anatomic factors, such as root abnormalities and fractures, and tooth relationships in the dental arch and with the opposing dentition can enhance plaque retention. Restoration margins located within the gingival sulcus do not cause gingivitis if patients are compliant with self-performed plaque control and periodic maintenance. Tooth-supported and/or tooth-retained restorations and their design, fabrication, delivery, and materials have often been associated with plaque retention and loss of attachment. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome (ARS), also known as Rieger syndrome, is a rare autosomal dominant condition defined by craniofacial, ocular, dental, periumbilical, and systemic anomalies. CASE PRESENTATION This case report describes in detail a multidisciplinary approach to successfully restore the oral function and esthetics of a 22-year-old patient diagnosed with ARS. The patient's clinical evaluation revealed that the area corresponding with teeth #13, #12, #11, #21, #22, and #23 was occupied by four malformed and/or deciduous teeth. The four anterior teeth were extracted, and socket preservation was performed using bovine-derived porous bone mineral. Six months after extractions, two implants were placed in the location of the lateral incisors and additional bone graft was performed. Two months after the initial healing, a temporary fixed partial was delivered and 9 months after implant placement the implants were restored with a porcelain-fused-to-metal fixed partial denture. CONCLUSIONS The use of implant-supported fixed partial dentures to restore missing teeth in patients with ARS provides biological and mechanical advantages over conventional, fixed, or removable prosthodontics. Further evaluation is needed to determine the longevity and long-term prognosis of dental implants in patients with ARS.

Abstract
Background To evaluate early failure and possible risk factors for failure of dental implants placed under practice-based conditions. Methods To clarify the research question, anonymized data from 106 patients with 186 dental implants were analyzed. The presence of sucessful healing (yes/no) at the time of incorporation of the final prosthesis was assessed. Mixed models were compiled for each target variable to enable estimation of the effects of patient-related and implant-related conditions on the risk of early implant failure. Results Nine out of 186 implants (4.8%) placed in 106 participants failed before incorporation of the final prosthesis. The use of shorter implants (< 10 mm) and the need for augmentation procedures were associated with a greater risk of early implant failure. For shorter implants, the risk was 5.8 times greater than that for longer implants (p = 0.0230). Use of augmentation procedures increased the risk by a factor of 5.5 (p = 0.0174). Conclusions Implants placed in the dental practice with a specialization in implantology heal successfully. The use of augmentation procedures and of implants shorter than 10 mm seems to be associated with a greater risk of early implant failure.

Abstract
Dental trauma is common and for patients who suffer significant oral injuries, rehabilitation can be challenging to the clinical team. This case report describes the successful prosthetic replacement of multiple missing teeth lost due to severe dentoalveolar trauma, using iliac crest bone grafting, an implant-retained removable dental prosthesis and implant-supported crowns. Good functionality and aesthetic outcome were achieved.

Abstract
To enhance biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and osseointegration, we coated titanium implants, by krypton fluoride (KrF) pulsed laser deposition, with a thin film of fluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA). Coating was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM), while physicochemical properties were evaluated by attenuated reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Calcium deposition, osteocalcin production, and expression of osteoblast genes were significantly higher in rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells seeded on FHA-coated titanium than in cells seeded on uncoated titanium. Implantation into rat femurs also showed that the FHA-coated material had superior osteoinductive and osseointegration activity in comparison with that of traditional implants, as assessed by microcomputed tomography and histology. Thus, titanium coated with FHA holds promise as a dental implant material.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of basic periodontal treatment on clinical periodontal parameters associated with abutment teeth of patients with mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial dentures (RPD) 18 months after treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty patients with periodontal disease were treated and evaluated according to the following periodontal parameters: visible plaque index (VPI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing depth (PD), gingival recession (GR), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and keratinized mucosa (KM). These parameters were compared between abutment teeth with direct and indirect retainers at baseline, and after 6 and 18 months. Data were analyzed by Friedman Test and Wilcoxon Test for all variables. RESULTS Most patients (n = 26; 86.7%) included in the study were female and had a mean age of 61 years (±7.54). Results showed that VPI and BOP decreased over time, and that VPI values were higher in abutment teeth with direct retainers (p = 0.001). There was a reduction in PD after 6 months, which was maintained up to 18 months. In general, abutment teeth with direct retainers had significantly higher values for PD, GR, and CAL (p = 0.029). Data also indicated that the parameters for VPI, BOP, and PD improved; however, abutment teeth with direct retainers presented smaller improvements, compared with abutment teeth with indirect retainers, which presented significant improvements for almost all variables. CONCLUSION Periodontal treatment and oral hygiene care of patients were adequate for maintenance of adequate periodontal conditions, regardless of the use of prostheses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this research was to identify risk factors for tooth loss in two birth cohorts, quinquagenarians and septuagenarians, after up to 10 years of clinical observation. DESIGN One hundred and twenty-three participants were recruited from the Interdisciplinary Study of Adult Development (ILSE) and examined at baseline and up to 10 years after. Thirty-nine and 84 participants belonged to the older (OC; born in 1930/32) cohort and younger (YC; born in 1950/52) cohort, respectively. Each participant underwent a dental examination comprising evaluation of the dental status (number of teeth, prosthetic restorations), Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), DMF-S, periodontal probing depths (PD) and tooth mobility (TM). Incidence of tooth loss over the study period was calculated for both cohorts as well as for the grouped dental target variables. A logistic regression model for tooth loss (0=tooth present/1=tooth lost) was compiled with possible binary confounders. RESULTS During the study period (eight years in mean), 1.2 (1.9) and 2.6 (2.6) teeth were lost in YC and OC, respectively, reflecting correspondent loss rates of 5% and 14% (p<0.001). However, primarily TM >1 merged into substantial tooth loss (60% lost). The regression analysis confirmed the bivariate findings. Older age and worse oral health issues were identified as risk factors for tooth loss(p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Both quinquagenarians and septuagenarians show relevant tooth loss over a period of up to 10 years but more in septuagenarians. The predominant predictor for tooth loss seems to be greater tooth mobility. With the rising challenges due to aging in several societies, knowing the risks might help clinicians when weighing treatment strategies and should encourage refining preventive measures for older patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose was to assess the early effects of removable partial denture (RPD) placement on abutment teeth in patients with periodontal disease. METHODS Fifteen distal-extension RPDs and 19 abutment teeth were evaluated in 13 patients with moderate-to-severe periodontal diseases. Clinical periodontal records and grey level (GL) score based on digital subtraction radiography were measured on the day of denture placement (baseline) and at 1day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after the placement. Occlusal force on total dentition (Ft) and abutment tooth (Fa) were recorded with (baseline) and without denture on the day of the placement, and with denture in the follow-up examinations. RESULTS No statistically significant difference between a follow-up period and the baseline was found in the clinical periodontal and occlusal force records, except for Ft with denture on the day of the placement, which was significantly lower than the baseline (p<0.05). The GL at distal crestal of the abutment was significantly higher at 1 week after the placement than at the baseline (p<0.05), while the scores of following examinations returned to the baseline level. CONCLUSIONS The distal crestal bone of the abutment tooth transitorily reacts to mechanical stress due to the denture placement, while this does not suggest a detrimental effect within the limitation of the study design with a short-term observation period. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The RPDs can be safely used for patients with periodontal diseases for at least 6 months if they are properly placed and maintained by professional care.

INTERVENTIONS The clinical periodontal parameters assessed on abutment teeth (experimental group) and nonabutment teeth (control group) were probing depth, clinical attachment level (CAL), plaque index, and gingival index (GI). The RPDs were evaluated under the following parameters: hygiene conditions and type of clasp on abutment. Both groups were analyzed using Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn's statistical test. Statistical significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS One hundred sixty-six abutment teeth and 168 nonabutment teeth were evaluated in 45 patients. A statistically significant difference was found between the groups for the CAL parameter (P = .03). With regard to the prostheses' hygiene conditions through the Tarbet index parameter, of the 186 quadrants evaluated, 143 scored 2 and 3. Ackers' clasps were the most frequent clasps (n = 111). A statistically significant difference was found for the GI parameter (P = .03). CONCLUSIONS It was possible to conclude, in this cross-sectional study, that in general terms, the use of RPDs did not interfere in the periodontal conditions of abutment teeth; however, most prostheses presented poor hygiene and high quantity of dental plaque.

Abstract
Evaluates the clinical performance of of a fiber-reinforced, composite-resin bonded splint; a bridge; a fiber post; and/or a resin veneer for the restoration of periodontally-involved anterior teeth. Shows that a combination of approaches is a good choice for minimally invasive prosthodontic treatment in the aesthetic zone in periodontal patients.
Aims This retrospective study evaluated the clinical performance of combining a fiber-reinforced, composite-resin (FRC) bonded splint; bridge; fiber post; and/or resin veneer for the restoration of periodontally-involved anterior teeth. Methods Sixty-three patients with periodontally-involved anterior teeth each received one of the following splinting restorations: FRC-bonded splint-bridges (SB), a combination of an FRC-bonded splint and resin veneer (SV), or FRC-bonded splints (S). Six patients with healthy periodontal teeth received orthodontic retainers with FRC-bonded splints (OS) as a control. Modified USPHS criteria were used to evaluate the effects of rehabilitation, and the periodontal pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) of the natural teeth were measured. Results All restorations resulted in good aesthetic outcomes. SV, S in combination with fiber posts and OS all resulted in 100% acceptable ratings for each category that was directly evaluated at each follow-up. The mean PPD was 3.5 ± 1.0 mm at baseline, decreased to 3.3 ± 1.0 mm after one year (p <0.05), and subsequently increased to 3.5±1.0 mm again after four years (p >0.05). These changes were similar to those in the mean CAL. Conclusion A combination of a FRC-bonded splint, bridge, fiber post and/or resin veneer for minimally invasive prosthodontic treatment in the aesthetic zone is a good choice for periodontal patients.

Abstract
Endosseous implants have revolutionized the field of Implants and Periodontics. Implant placement is a viable option in the treatment of partial and full edentulism. However, placement of implants in alveolar deficiencies may lead to adverse angulations, mechanical overload and esthetic dissatisfaction. When minimum dimensions for implant placement are not present in alveolar process, it is necessary to augment the size of the ridge. This can be achieved by various methods and materials. Here we present a successful case of vertical and horizontal ridge augmentation in anterior maxilla using autograft, xenograft and titanium mesh with simultaneous placement of implants, where autograft was obtained from the same site avoiding secondary surgical site.

Abstract
Traumatic injuries or congenital malformations may cause soft and hard tissue defects resulting in the loss of alveolar bone and attached mucosa. Restoring the defective area presents a challenge for clinicians. The prosthetic rehabilitation of 2 patients with maxillary dentoalveolar defects with 2 different prosthetic designs is presented. The esthetic and functional requirements of the patients were fulfilled.
