Normal Variants in Echocardiography

Echocardiography is a powerful and convenient tool used routinely in the cardiac evaluation of many patients. Improved resolution and visualization of cardiac anatomy has led to the discovery of many normal variant structures that have no known pathologic consequence. Importantly, these findings may masquerade as pathology prompting unnecessary further evaluation at the expense of anxiety, cost, or potential harm. This review provides an updated and comprehensive collection of normal anatomic variants on both transthoracic and transesophageal imaging.

Coumadin ridge: An incidental finding of a left atrial pseudotumor on transthoracic echocardiography

Coumadin ridge is a normal anatomic variant that is occasionally found in the left atrium. It can present as a linear or nodular mass which can undulate with cardiac motion and if particularly prominent, can easily be mistaken for a tumor or thrombus. Careful evaluation and consideration of the common variants discussed in this review can help limit misdiagnosis, as well as unnecessary workup and treatment. We present a case of coumadin ridge that was found on a patient using two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography.

Aberrantly inserted chordae tendineae without significant mitral regurgitation

Aberrantly inserted chordae tendineae in the left atrial side are a rare find. We report here the case of a young patient with aberrantly inserted chordae tendineae not causing significant mitral regurgitation. Because the patient remained asymptomatic and the anomalous chord of the left atrium could be considered within normal human anatomic variation, the authors decided to only monitor the patient's condition for the time being.

Anatomic variants mimicking pathology on echocardiography: differential diagnosis

Differentiation of normal from abnormal findings is critical in echocardiography. Anatomic variants occurring in normal cardiac developments often simulate pathologic entities. This review focuses on the differential diagnosis of normal anatomic structures from pathologic ones in echocardiography.
