Abstract
Four rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, facultative anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive lactic acid bacteria, designated as EB0058T, SCR0080, LD0937T and SCR0063T, were isolated from different corn and grass silage samples. The isolated strains were characterized using a polyphasic approach and EB0058T and SCR0080 were identified as Lacticaseibacillus zeae by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Based on whole-genome sequence-based characterization, EB0058T and SCR0080 were separated into a distinct clade from Lacticaseibacillus zeae DSM 20178T, together with CECT9104 and UD2202, whose genomic sequences are available from NCBI GenBank. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values within the new subgroup are 99.9 % and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values are 99.3-99.9 %, respectively. In contrast, comparison of the new subgroup with publicly available genomic sequences of L. zeae strains, including the type strain DSM 20178T, revealed dDDH values of 70.2-72.5 % and ANI values of 96.2-96.6 %. Based on their chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, EB0058T and SCR0080 represent a new subspecies of L. zeae. The name Lacticaseibacillus zeae subsp. silagei subsp. nov. is proposed with the type strain EB0058T (=DSM 116376T=NCIMB 15474T). According to the results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing, LD0937T and SCR0063T are members of the Lacticaseibacillus group. The dDDH value between the isolates LD0937T and SCR0063T was 67.6 %, which is below the species threshold of 70 %, clearly showing that these two isolates belong to different species. For both strains, whole genome-sequencing revealed that the closest relatives within the Lacticaseibacillus group were Lacticaseibacillus huelsenbergensis DSM 115425 (dDDH 66.5 and 65.9 %) and Lacticaseibacillus casei DSM 20011T (dDDH 64.1 and 64.9 %). Based on the genomic, chemotaxonomic and morphological data obtained in this study, two novel species, Lacticaseibacillus parahuelsenbergensis sp. nov. and Lacticaseibacillus styriensis sp. nov. are proposed and the type strains are LD0937T (=DSM 116105T=NCIMB 15471T) and SCR0063T (=DSM 116297T=NCIMB 15473T), respectively.

Abstract
The seasonal surplus and putrefactive property of moist forages inevitably increase the pressure on environmental protection and residual grass disposal. In the current work, the anaerobic fermentation approach was adopted to assist the sustainable recycling of leftover Pennisetum giganteum (LP), and its chemical composition, fermentation performance, bacterial community and functional profiles during anaerobic fermentation were studied. Fresh LP was spontaneously fermented for up to 60 d. At the end of anaerobic fermentation, fermented LP (FLP) displayed homolactic fermentation with low pH value, ethanol, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations but high lactic acid concentration. Weissella was dominant in 3-day FLP, yet Lactobacillus was the overwhelming genus (92.6%) in 60-day FLP. The anaerobic fermentation process promoted (P < 0.05) the metabolism of carbohydrate and nucleotide while suppressing (P < 0.05) that of lipid, cofactors, vitamins, energy, and amino acid. The results showed that the residual grass with LP as an example could be successfully fermented even if no additives were added, without signs of clostridial and fungal contamination.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of inoculating corn silage and/or feeding a direct-fed microbial (PRO) on performance and nutrient digestibility of lactating dairy cows. At harvesting, corn silage was treated either with water (culated or not [CON]) or Lactococcus lactis and Lentilactobacillus buchneri (INC; SiloSolve FC) at 1.5 × 105 cfu/g of corn silage. Ten mini silos and one farm-scale silo bunker per treatment were prepared for the laboratory and the lactating dairy cow trial, respectively. Five mini silos per treatment were opened on days 2 or 90 post-ensiling for pH measurement, as well as chemical analysis and aerobic stability, respectively. The farm-scale silo bunkers were opened 77 d post-ensiling for the beginning of the lactating cow trial. Eighty lactating Holstein cows were assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial design to: (1) CON silage without PRO (CON-CON; n = 20), (2) CON silage with PRO at 14 g/head/d (CON-PRO; n = 20), (3) INC silage without PRO (INC-CON; n = 20), and (4) INC silage with PRO at 14 g/head/d (INC-PRO; n = 20). Concurrently with the feeding trial, eight cows per treatment were chosen for nutrient digestibility. The pH of the corn silage was not affected by the silage inoculant (P ≥ 0.29), but INC yielded greater concentration of acetic acid and longer aerobic stability (P < 0.01). Dairy cows fed INC had a lower mean total dry matter intake (DMI), milk protein content, and somatic cell counts vs. CON (P ≤ 0.02). On the other hand, milk and fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) production efficiency, milk urea-N, DM, crude protein, and starch digestibility were greater for INC-fed cows (P ≤ 0.03). Feeding direct-fed microbials (DFM) improved mean body weight, milk yield, and FPCM, as well as milk protein and lactose yield (P ≤ 0.05), but reduced milk fat and protein content (P = 0.02). A silage inoculant × DFM interaction was observed for milk production efficiency, milk protein and lactose content, and somatic cell count (P ≤ 0.05). Dairy cows fed INC-CON had a greater milk production efficiency and milk lactose content (P ≤ 0.04), but INC-PRO had lower milk protein content and SCC (P ≤ 0.03). In summary, inoculating L. lactis and L. buchneri increased acetic acid content and aerobic stability of corn silage, reduced DMI, but improved milk production efficiency and nutrient digestibility of lactating Holstein dairy cows. On the other hand, feeding PRO improved milk, protein, and lactose yield. Additionally, combining the feeding of an inoculated corn silage with PRO reduced milk somatic cell count.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are excellent anaerobic fermenters that produce highly valuable grass-based animal feed containing essential nutrients. In the present study, an ensiling process was used to improve anaerobic fermentation in triticale silage under different moisture conditions with LAB. The triticale was treated with either a single bacterium or combined LAB and then vacuum-sealed. After 180 and 360 days of storage, the silage's fermentation characteristics, microbial changes and nutrient contents were analyzed. The pH of the silage was significantly lower than the control silage. There was a significant difference in the pH values between the silages treated with single or mixed LAB. The LAB treatment led to a substantial increase in lactic acid (LA), a decrease in butyric acid (BA), and marginal levels of acetic acid (AA). The LA content after the mixed LAB treatment was significantly higher than that after the single culture LAB treatment. After single or combined inoculant treatments, the LAB population in the silage increased, while the yeast and mold levels decreased. These findings suggest that the addition of LAB to silage during ensiling could enhance the nutritional quality and reduce unwanted microbial growth. The mixed LAB treatments produced silage with a significantly higher nutritional value than the single LAB treatments.

Lacticaseibacillus
group. The most closely related species,
Lacticaseibacillus casei
DSM 20011T and
Lacticaseibacillus zeae
DSM 20178T, have digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values of 63.9 and 53.4%, respectively, with the novel strains. In contrast, the dDDH value between strains HO 1656T and HO 0673 is 99.3 %, clearly showing that these two isolated strains belong to the same species. According to analysis of the housekeeping genes (dnaK, mutL and pheS), both strains form a distinct cluster within the
Lacticaseibacillus
group. Strains HO 0673 and HO 1656T could produce acid from d-arabinose, adonitol, ribose, rhamnose, dulcitol, sorbitol, turanose, l-fucose and l-arabitol, unlike their nearest phylogenetic neighbour
L. casei
DSM 20011T. The major cellular fatty acids of both strains are C16 : 0 and C18 : 1 ω9c. The G+C content of the genomic DNA of both strains is 48.0 mol%. Thus, strains HO 1656T and HO 0673 represent a novel species based on their chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic characteristics. The name Lacticaseibacillus huelsenbergensis sp. nov. is proposed with the type strain HO 1656T (=DSM 115425T=NCIMB 15466T).

Abstract
The effects of farm management practices and seasonal variation on the microbial community and chemical composition of corn and grass-legume silage are largely understudied due to the advantages of controlled mini-silo experiments. This study aims to investigate the effects that some key farm factors (use of an inoculant, farm region, and bunker or tower silo) and seasonal variations have on corn and grass-legume silage from farms across Ontario, Quebec, and New York. The silage was either treated with a commercial inoculant (Lallemand Biotal Buchneri 500® or Chr Hansen SiloSolve FC®) or left untreated. The bacterial communities of silage were compared to those of raw bulk tank milk from the same farm to determine if they were similarly affected by management practices or seasonal variations. Family level analysis of the 16S rRNA V3-V4 gene amplicon bacterial community, the ITS1 amplicon fungal community, NMR water soluble metabolome, and mycotoxin LC-MS were performed on silage over a two-year period. Chemical compounds associated with the use of inoculants in corn and grass-legume silage were higher in inoculated corn (acetate, propane-1,2-diol, γ-aminobutyrate; p < 0.001) and grass-legume (propionate; p = 0.011). However, there was no significant difference in the relative abundance (RA) of Lactobacillaceae in either silage type. Leuconostocaceae was higher in non-inoculated corn (p < 0.001) and grass-legume (p < 0.001) silage than in inoculated silage. Tower silos had higher RA of Leuconostocaceae (p < 0.001) and higher pH (p < 0.001) in corn and grass-legume silage. The one farm that used liquid manure with no other fertilizer type had higher RA of Clostridiaceae (p = 0.045) and other rumen/fecal (p < 0.006) bacteria in grass-legume silage than all other farms. Seasonal variation affected most of the key silage microbial families, however the trends were rarely visible across both years. Few trends in microbial variation could be observed in both silage and bulk tank milk: two farms had higher Moraxellaceae (p < 0.001) in milk and either corn or grass-legume silage. In farms using an inoculant, lower Staphylococcaceae was observed in the raw bulk tank milk.

Abstract
Wheat and corn silages are widely used as ruminant feed in Israel due to their availability and cost-effectiveness. To ensure long-term preservation without compromising nutritional quality, effective methods must be employed. The inclusion of additives during harvest and ensiling can enhance efficiency and address preservation challenges. In the current study, the effects of microbial inoculum (MI) and urea on the chemical composition, amino acid profiles, aerobic stability, and in vitro digestibility of wheat and corn silages were investigated. Samples of wheat and corn were subjected to four treatments: control, MI, urea and a combination of MI + urea. The treatments were ensiled in anaerobic conditions and opened after 1, 7, 14 or 28 days. The results showed that additives improved the quality parameters of wheat and corn silages. The inclusion of MI produced the most aerobically stable silages. The inclusion of urea in silages decreased aerobic stability. Additives improved in vitro cell wall carbohydrates' digestibility in both silages and was the best when MI was combined with urea. These results imply that additives could be incorporated in silages to enhance their nutritional value, aerobic stability and digestibility. Nonetheless, increased CP content with additives was not accompanied with a parallel increase in amino acids' content in corn silage.

Abstract
To evaluate the fermentation properties and bacterial community composition of mulberry leaves when ensiled with smooth bromegrass, and the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum inoculation on the mixed silage of mulberry leaves and smooth bromegrass, mulberry leaves were mixed with smooth bromegrass at ratios of 100:0, 90:10, 80:20, 70:30 and 60:40, and ensiled for 60 d with and without L. plantarum inoculant. The results showed that the sole fermentation of mulberry leaves failed to achieve optimum fermentation quality. Silage with a mulberry leaf ratio of 80% performed better fermentation quality compared with other non-inoculated groups, indicated by lower pH value, adequate lactic acid accumulation, and enriched proportion of Lactobacillus in the bacterial community. L. plantarum inoculation dramatically improved fermentation quality of mulberry leaf silage compared with the non-inoculated control. However, the fermentation quality of the inoculated silage decreased along with the reduction in the ratio of mulberry leaves. In conclusion, L. plantarum inoculation has the capability to improve the silage quality of mulberry leaves. Combined ensiling with smooth bromegrass could also aid in improving silage quality of mulberry leaves, with the optimum ratio of mulberry leaves being 80%.

Abstract
The effect of the ensiling length (3, 6, or 9 months), and the processing by dehydration (D) or dehydration and pelleting (P) with respect to the fresh silages (F) were studied in vitro on three maize cultivars in three incubation runs to study the effect of these factors on the nutritive value of maize silage. Gas production pattern, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD), methane concentration (6 and 12 h), ammonia, and volatile fatty acid concentration (VFA) at 12 h were measured. The moisture and pH of F averaged 676 g/kg and 4.09, respectively, and were not affected by the ensiling length, but moisture was reduced, and the pH increased in D and P with respect to F (p < 0.05). The ensiling length did not affect the chemical composition, but differences among the processing forms were detected in a higher acid detergent insoluble nitrogen (ADIN) proportion in P than D, and D than F (p < 0.001). Silages opened at 9 months showed the lowest gas production (p < 0.05), and those that opened after 3 months showed the highest IVTD. The effects of processing on nutrient utilisation only manifested on 3 month silages, with the volume of gas production and IVTD being lower in D than F. However, processing tended (p = 0.064) to reduce the methane proportion at 12 h, indicating both a more efficient fermentation and a lower potential of greenhouse gas emissions compared to the fresh silages. Extending the length of ensiling to 9 months reduced the fermentation of maize silage. The processing increased the dry matter and buffered the feed as well as contributed to an increase in fermentation in 3 month silages.

Abstract
Ensiling is a simple and effective method of alleviating a shortage of forage for ruminants. This study aimed to investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inoculants and stage-increased temperature on the fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of oat silage on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The silage was treated with local laboratory inoculant (I) and commercial inoculant (S) and stored at ambient temperature (<10 °C) or stage-increased (5, 10 and 15 days) temperatures of 10 °C and 15 °C for 60 days. The results showed that stage-increased storage temperature can improve silage fermentation. Compared with 10 °C, a stage-increased storage temperature of 15 °C effectively (p < 0.05) promoted the fermentation rate of silage by increasing the dominance of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, with higher lactic, acetic and propionic acid contents and a lower ammonia-N ratio of the total N and final pH value. Compared with S, treatment with I increased the water-soluble carbohydrate and lactic acid contents and decreased the ammonia-N ratio of the total N and final pH value. This work demonstrated that increasing the storage temperature in stages using a warming infrastructure facilitates the preservation of oat silage in cold regions, and the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria could advance silage fermentation on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of a homo-fermentative lactic acid bacteria (homo-LAB) inoculant on the fermentation and microbial communities of alfalfa ensiled at two dry matter (DM) contents of 38 and 46% DM. At both DMs, alfalfa was treated or not with an inoculant containing Pediococcus acidilactici, Enterococcus faecium and Lactobacillus plantarum at a targeted application rate of 165,000 cfu/g of fresh weight and stored for 3, 30 and 60 days. Treatment with the inoculant resulted in a lower drop in pH and, in general, higher lactic acid and lower acetic acid when applied to medium DM silage. For the four most abundant microbial genera, increased abundances of Bacteroides and Lactobacillus (p < 0.05), as well as decreased abundances of Muribaculaceae were observed in high DM and inoculated silages. The abundance of Prevotellaceae-UCG-001 was lower in medium DM control silages than in high DM control silages. Inoculation and DM affected abundances of Vishniacozyma (p < 0.05). Increased abundances of Vishniacozyma, as well as decreased abundances of Leucosporidium were observed in medium DM-inoculated silages. Changes in the relative abundance (RA) of the main populations of bacteria and yeasts did explain the fermentation and nutrition differences among treatments.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are recognized as contaminants due to their potential risk for human and environment. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of pyroligneous acid (PA), a waste of biochar production, on fermentation characteristics, diversity, and dynamics of ARGs during ensiling of alfalfa using metagenomic analysis. The results indicated that PA decreased (P < 0.05) dry matter loss, pH value, gas production, coliform bacteria count, protease activity, and nonprotein-N, ammonia-N, and butyric acid contents and increased (P < 0.05) lactic acid content during ensiling. During fermentation, Bacteria, Firmicutes, and Lactobacillus were the most abundant at kingdom, phylum, and genus levels, respectively. Pyroligneous acid reduced the relative abundance of Bacteria and Firmicutes and increased that of Lactobacillus. The detected ARGs belonged to 36 drug classes, including mainly macrolides, tetracycline, lincosamides, and phenicol. These types of ARGs decreased during fermentation and were further reduced by PA. These types of ARGs were positively correlated (P < 0.05) with fermentation parameters like pH value and ammonia-N content and with bacterial communities. At the genus level, the top several drug classes, including macrolide, tetracycline, lincosamide, phenicol, oxazolidinone, streptogramin, pleuromutilin, and glycopeptide, were positively correlated with Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Listeria, Bacillus, Klebsiella, Clostridium, and Enterobacter, the potential hosts of ARGs. Overall, ARGs in alfalfa silage were abundant and were influenced by the fermentation parameters and microbial community composition. Ensiling could be a feasible way to mitigate ARGs in forages. The addition of PA could not only improve fermentation quality but also reduce ARG pollution of alfalfa silage. IMPORTANCE Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are considered environmental pollutants posing a potential human health risk. Silage is an important and traditional feed, mainly for ruminants. ARGs in silages might influence the diversity and distribution of ARGs in animal intestinal and feces and then the manure and the manured soil. However, the diversity and dynamics of ARGs in silage during fermentation are still unknown. We ensiled alfalfa, one of the most widely used forages, with or without pyroligneous acid (PA), which was proved to have the ability to reduce ARGs in soils. The results showed that ARGs in alfalfa silage were abundant and were influenced by the fermentation parameters and microbial community. The majority of ARGs in alfalfa silage reduced during fermentation. The addition of PA could improve silage quality and reduce ARG pollution in alfalfa silage. This study can provide useful information for understanding and controlling ARG pollution in animal production.

Abstract
Simple Summary The silage fermentation of Stylosanthes is one of the most effective solutions to solve the shortage of feed due to the inability of Stylosanthes to grow in winter. In our previous study, it was found that the effect of direct silage fermentation was poor due to factors such as the high buffer energy value and high fiber content. In this study, we used the transgenic engineered lactic acid bacteria independently developed by our team as additives to explore the effects of cellulase-producing engineered lactic acid bacteria on the fermentation quality and in vitro digestibility of Stylosanthes silage under different raw material moisture contents. The results are discussed in terms of chemical composition. We found that lactic acid bacteria can produce a large amount of cellulase in the process of Stylosanthes silage fermentation, significantly reduce the fiber content in Stylosanthes, and improve the quality and in vitro digestibility of Stylosanthes silage. Our research results provide a deeper understanding of the influence of moisture content and lactic acid bacteria additives on Stylosanthes silage, and provide technical support and a theoretical basis for guiding production practice and further in-depth research, development and utilization of more warm-season forage silage. Abstract The present study aims to estimate the dynamic effects of moisture levels and inoculants on the fermentation quality and in vitro degradability of Stylosanthes silage. In this experiment, Stylosanthes was ensiled with (1) no additive (control), (2) Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), (3) Lactobacillus plantarum carrying heterologous genes encoding multifunctional glycoside hydrolases (xg), or (4) LP + xg and was wilted until different moisture levels (60% and 72%) were attained. The ensiled bags were unpacked after different storage periods to determine the chemical composition and fermentation quality of the Stylosanthes silage. Moreover, the in vitro degradability was also determined 45 days after the ensiling process. The results show that the silage prepared with freshly mowed Stylosanthes also had a lower pH and NH3- N content. Adding transgenic engineered lactic acid bacteria xg not only decreased the NDF and ADF content of the silage, but also improved the in vitro digestibility significantly. We concluded that the addition of xg to Stylosanthes silage can improve its quality and increase in vitro digestibility and gas production. The results provide technical support and a theoretical basis for the utilization of warm-season forage silage.

Effects of Mulberry Leaves and Pennisetum Hybrid Mix-Silage on Fermentation Parameters and Bacterial Community. FERMENTATION 2022. Abstract
The silage quality and bacterial community of hybrid Pennisetum (P. hydridum × P. americanum) with or without 30% and 50% mulberry leaves for 3, 7, 14, and 30 days were investigated. Results showed that compared with the 100% hybrid Pennisetum group, more lactic acid (40.71 vs. 80.81 g/kg dry matter (DM)), acetic acid (10.99 vs. 31.84 g/kg DM), lactic acid bacteria (8.46 vs. 8.51 log10 cfu/g fresh matter), water-soluble carbohydrates (2.41 vs. 4.41 g/100 g DM), crude protein (4.97 vs. 10.84 g/100 g DM), and true protein (3.91 vs. 8.52 g/100 g DM) content as well as less neutral detergent fiber (67.30 vs. 47.26 g/100 g DM), acid detergent fiber (33.85 vs. 25.38 g/100 g DM), and yeast counts (4.78 vs. 2.39 log10 cfu/g fresh matter) and an appropriate pH (3.77 vs. 4.06) were found in silages added with 50% mulberry leaves at 30 days of ensiling. Moreover, the addition of mulberry leaves also influenced the relative abundance of the bacterial community. The relative abundance of Firmicutes increased and Proteobacteria decreased when mulberry leaves were added. Weissella and Lactobacillus abundance also increased. To sum up the above, mixing with 50% mulberry leaves yielded the greatest fermentation quality in this study. In conclusion, mixing with mulberry leaves could be a reasonable way to improve the quality of hybrid Pennisetum silage.

Abstract
Sesbania cannabina (SC) is a protein-rich roughage that thrives under moderate-severe saline-alkali (MSSA) soils with the potential to relieve the shortage of high nutritive forage. Sweet sorghum (SS) also tolerates MSSA soils and contains rich fermentable carbohydrates which could improve the fermentation quality in mixed silage. The present study investigated the silage quality, bacterial community, and metabolome in the mixed silage of SC and SS (SC-SS) with or without lactic acid bacterial (LAB) inoculants. Four ratios (10:0, 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7) of SC and SS were treated with sterile water or LAB inoculants (homofermentative Companilactobacillus farciminis and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, and heterofermentative Lentilactobacillus buchneri and Lentilactobacillus hilgardii), which were analyzed after 60 days of ensiling. Results revealed that LAB inoculation improved the fermentation quality by increasing the lactic acid content and decreasing the ammonia nitrogen and butyric acid contents compared with the untreated group. LAB inoculation also raised the relative feed value by reducing indigestible fibers [e.g., neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose]. Microbial and metabolomic analysis indicated that LAB inoculants could modify the bacterial community and metabolome of SC-SS silage. In co-ensiling samples except for SC alone silage, L. buchneri and L. hilgardii were the dominant species. Metabolites with bioactivities like anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-tumor were upregulated with LAB inoculation. Furthermore, correlation analysis demonstrated that active metabolites (e.g., glycitin, glabrene, alnustone, etc.) were positively correlated with L. buchneri, while tripeptides (e.g., SPK, LLK, LPH, etc.) were positively correlated with L. hilgardii. Adequately describing the SC-SS silage by multi-omics approach might deepen our understanding of complicated biological processes underlying feature silages fermentation. Moreover, it may also contribute to screening of targeted functional strains for MSSA-tolerating forage to improve silage quality and promote livestock production.

Abstract
Wet anaerobic storage of algal biomass is a promising preservation approach that can ensure a continuous supply of these feedstocks to biorefineries year-round. An effective solution to preservation must ensure minimal dry matter loss and a change in biochemical composition during storage. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the preservation of Nannochloropsis gaditana biomass through wet anaerobic storage and its impact on biomass quality. Prior to storage, the algae sample is inoculated with two different strains of lactic acid bacteria and thereafter stored for 30 and 180 days. Each inoculant limited the dry matter loss to <10% (dry basis) after the storage duration. Final pH values (4.3–4.8) indicate that the biomass samples are properly ensiled, achieving the acidic conditions necessary for preservation. Compositional analysis of the biomass after storage shows a reduction in carbohydrate content, a relative increase in lipid content, and no significant change in the protein fraction. Glucose and galactose were the most prevalent sugar monomers. The low dry matter loss and minimal compositional change indicate that wet anaerobic storage is an effective means of preserving algal biomass and ensuring a constant supply of algal biomass feedstock to a biorefinery.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to investigate the effect of phenyllactic acid as an additive on silage fermentation and bacterial community of reed canary grass (RCG, Phalaris arundinacea L.) on the Qinghai Tibetan Plateau. At the heading stage, RCG was harvested, chopped and ensiled in small bag silos. The silage was treated without (control, 1.0 g/mL sterile water, on a fresh matter basis (FM)) or with phenyllactic acid (PLA, 3 mg/mL, FM), antimicrobial additive (PSB, a mixture of potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate, 2%, FM), lactic acid bacteria inoculant (LABi, L. plantarum + L. curvatus, 1 × 106 cfu/g, FM) and PLA + LABi, and then stored in a dark room at the ambient temperature (5 ~ 15 °C) for 60 days. Results Compared with control, PLA decreased lactic acid, acetic acid and ammonia-N contents, and subsequently increased CP content of RCG silage. PLA enhanced the growth of lactic acid bacteria and reduced the count of yeasts (P < 0.05) in RCG silage, with reduced bacterial richness index (Chao1), observed operational taxonomic units and diversity index (Simpson). In relative to control, moreover, PLA and PLA + LABi increased the relative abundance of Lactococcus in RCG silage by 27.73 and 16.93%, respectively. Conclusions Therefore, phenyllactic acid at ensiling improved nutritional quality of RCG silage by advancing the disappearance of yeasts and the dominance of Lactococcus.

Abstract
In this study, a novel beta-cypermethrin (beta-cyp)-degrading strain Lactobacillus pentosus 3-27 (LP3-27) was screened from beta-cyp-contaminated silage. The strain could degrade 96% of beta-cyp (50 mg/L) in MSM medium after 4 d of culture, while the strain lost its degradation ability when the beta-cyp concentration reached 250 mg/L. The effects of LP 3-27 on fermentation, bacterial community, and bioremediation of contaminated alfalfa silage at two dry matter (DM) contents were studied. The results showed that inoculation with LP3-27 not only degraded beta-cyp, but also improved the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage after 60 d of ensiling. Meanwhile, L. pentosus dominated the bacterial community during ensiling in LP3-27 inoculated silages, whereas Pediococcus acidilactici was the dominant species in the control silage. LP3-27 inoculation also simplified the bacterial interaction networks of ensiled alfalfa. Beta-cyp degradation was positively correlated with L. pentosus in LP- inoculated silages, which confirmed the function of beta-cyp degradation by L. pentosus. In addition, higher beta-cyp degradation was observed in silage with 35% versus 43% DM. In summary, strain LP3-27 could be used as a candidate inoculum for bioremediation of beta-cyp-contaminated silage and to produce safe silage for animal production.

Abstract
Globally, approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or discarded, comprising 1. 3 billion tons annually. Factors contributing to food waste from the food manufacturer to the consumer level are numerous. Events that may result in food waste include, but are not limited to, manufacturing food by-products, improper handling within the supply chain (e.g., cold chain deviations), misunderstood food date labels, over-purchasing, and consumer-level temperature abuse. From the manufacturer to consumer, each node in the food supply requires concerted efforts to divert food waste from entering municipal landfills. Depending on the state of the food waste, it is diverted to various outlets, from food donation for consumption to composting for soil amendment. To better understand the opportunities in the United States to divert food waste from landfills, current and emerging federal policies as well as the causes of food waste generation must be understood. Unfortunately, information on both the composition of food waste in the U.S. and how it impacts critical factors in food waste treatment, especially in food waste composting, is limited. Specifically, this review aims to: (1) discuss and compare critical factors that impact the fate of food waste and (2) examine emerging opportunities to advance the processing and products of food waste.

Abstract
Whole-plant corn (Zea may L.) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid
[Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] are major summer crops that
can be fed as direct-cut or silage. Proso millet is a short-season growing crop
with distinct agronomic characteristics that can be productive in marginal
lands. However, information is limited about the potential production, feed
value, and ensilability of proso millet forage. We evaluated proso millet as a
silage crop in comparison with conventional silage crops. Proso millet was sown
on June 8 and harvested on September 5 at soft-dough stage. Corn and
sorghum-sudangrass hybrid were planted on May 10 and harvested on September 10
at the half milk-line and soft-dough stages, respectively. The fermentation was
evaluated at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 45 days after ensiling. Although
forage yield of proso millet was lower than corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid,
its relative feed value was greater than sorghum-sudangrass hybrid.
Concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude protein, and water-soluble carbohydrate
decreased commonly in the ensiling forage crops. The DM loss was greater in
proso millet than those in corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. The in
vitro dry matter digestibility declined in the forage crops as
fermentation progressed. In the early stages of fermentation, pH dropped
rapidly, which was stabilized in the later stages. Compared to corn and
sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, the concentration of ammonia-nitrogen was greater in
proso millet. The count of lactic acid bacteria reached the maximum level on day
10, with the values of 6.96, 7.77, and 6.95 Log10 CFU/g fresh weight
for proso millet, corn, and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, respectively. As ensiling
progressed, the concentrations of lactic acid and acetic acid of the three crops
increased and lactic acid proportion became higher in the order of
sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, corn, and proso millet. Overall, the shorter,
fast-growing proso millet comparing with corn and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid
makes this forage crop an alternative option, particularly in areas where
agricultural inputs are limited. However, additional research is needed to
evaluate the efficacy of viable strategies such as chemical additives or
microbial inoculants to minimize ammonia-nitrogen formation and DM loss during
ensiling.

Abstract
Ensiling has been developed as mainstream technologies to preserve lignocellulose biomass for biogas production. However, the lack of general evaluation methods and process mechanism research hinders the understanding of its effectiveness. In this context, we reviewed existing studies and proposed some key considerations: (1) For assessing the ensiling process, determined dry matter contents should be corrected according to the volatilization loss in oven-drying method to obtain accurate storage loss and methane yield; (2) For comprehensive assessments, the trade-off between storage loss and enhanced biomethane yield should be evaluated from the entire-chain process; (3) The mechanism to enhance methane yield is primarily attributed to increased lignocellulosic biodigestibility through acid-based hydrolysis and biological degradation during ensiling; (4) Measures including co-storage, increasing buffering capacity, adjusting carbon/nitrogen ratio, and additives can be adopted to increase biogas production. The proposed methods, mechanisms, and measures (3Ms) could help initiate the specific quality criteria of biogas-oriented silages.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of homo/heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the quality of corn silage and its rumen digestibility. Maize (Zea mays strain Xingsiyu No. 10), at the early dough stage, was harvested, chopped, ensiled in vacuum bags, and divided into four groups: (1) control (without added bacteria); (2) with the homofermentative LAB Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus (1:1 mixture, 1 × 105 cfu·g−1); (3) with the heterofermentative LAB Lactobacillus buchneri (1 × 105 cfu·g−1); and (4) with the homo/heterofermentative LAB L. plantarum, P. pentosaceus, and L. buchneri (1:1:1 mixture). At 2, 8, 15, 45, and 60 d of ensiling, nutritional quality, fermentation characteristics, and microbial content were assessed. After 60 d, aerobic stability and rumen digestibility tests were performed. The addition of homo- and (or) hetero-fermentative LAB significantly improved the nutritional quality, fermentation characteristics, and microbial content. Addition of the heterofermenter L. buchneri, with or without the homofermenters L. plantarum and P. pentosaceus, improved aerobic stability. The different LAB inoculants increased the degradation rates of dry matter, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber of the corn silage by sheep ruminants. Analysis indicated that L. buchneri yielded the best corn silage.

Abstract
In order to understand the degradation of different residual pesticides of white clover silage and their influence on silage quality, three commonly used orchard pesticides with different concentrations were added to the white clover and fermented for 90 days. The results showed that the degradation rate of cypermethrin and its toxic degradation product 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) was the highest after silage, at different concentrations, both were 100%. The degradation rate of Tebuconazole and chloropyridine was 72.47-80.27% and 47.76-64.82%, of which 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) content, poisonous toxic degradation product, increased 0.0525-0.253 mg·kg-1. The residues of beta-cypermethrin and tebuconazole had reached safety standards after silage. As compared with the control, the contents of lactic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid increased in the treated samples. The higher concentrations of three pesticides all significantly reduced the lactic acid content of silage (p<0.05). Pesticides had different effects on the nutritional components of white clover silage. Conclusively, silage is a potential way to expand the utilization of covering plants in orchards.

Abstract
The use of bacterial inoculants for ensiling based on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to obtain conserved forages has become an alternative for the improvement of milk and meat productivity in cattle, specifically by optimizing the nutritional and microbial quality of animal feed. LAB inoculant production involves microbial and technological aspects such as biomass obtention, the use of cocultures, the inclusion of probiotics, the production of antimicrobial peptides, operational methods used in bioreactors, and the formulation of the end product to be commercialized to farmers. This review explores the technical aspects of the manufacture of bacterial inoculants, from the main features desired in LAB for ensiling purposes to the alternatives of the bioprocess involved.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to separate the effects of chemical and microbial factors on the fermentation quality and bacterial community of ensiled Pennisetum giganteum. METHODS AND RESULTS Fresh P. giganteum of two vegetative stages (stage I, GI ; stage II, GII ) was treated as follows: GI epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GI (MI CI ), GII epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GI (MII CI ), GI epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GII (MI CII ), and GII epiphytic microbiota + γ-ray presterilized GII (MII CII ). Triplicates per treatment were sampled after 30 days of ensiling for chemical and microbial analyses and high-throughput sequencing. Silages made from CII (MI CII and MII CII ) had higher lactic acid concentration and the ratio of lactic to acetic acid, and lower pH and ammonia nitrogen concentration than silages produced by CI (MI CI and MII CI ). Species differential analyses showed that the changes of chemical composition rather than epiphytic microbiota significantly affected the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Pantoea in P. giganteum silages. CONCLUSION These above results manifested that chemical composition was the main factor influencing the fermentation quality and bacterial community of P. giganteum silage in this study. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The obtained results may, therefore, be the first record to provide an in-depth understanding of the relative contributions of chemical and microbial parameters on fermentation quality and bacterial community, which is of great importance for modulating silage fermentation and improving silage quality.

Abstract
Ensiling is one of the essential processes to preserve fodder with high nutrients and microbiological quality. The forages before ensiling have a limited number of bacteria associated with the controlled fermentation process. Undesirable microbes can grow in silages when there is not efficient fermentation. Such kinds of microbes might cause pathogenic or toxic compounds that affect animal and human health. Therefore, it is necessary to inoculate potent starter cultures. Lactic acid bacteria’s (LABs) have been considered the most prominent microbial additives used to improve the quality of silage. Currently, LABs have been used in modern and sustainable agriculture systems due to their biological potential. Recently, many scientists have increased their focus on developing nutrient-rich animal feed from forages with LAB. This current review focuses on issues related to forage preservation in the form of silages, how undesirable microbes affect the fermentation process, the critical role of LAB in silage production, and the selection of potent LABs to effectively control unwanted microbial growth and promote those which favor animal growth.

Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a primary greenhouse gas and the main cause of global warming. Respiration from plant cells and microorganisms enables CO2 to be produced during ensiling, a method of moist forage preservation applied worldwide. However, limited information is available regarding CO2 emissions and mitigation during ensiling. Pyroligneous acid, a by-product of plant biomass pyrolysis, has a strong antibacterial capacity. To investigate CO2 production and the influence of pyroligneous acid, fresh stylo, and rice straw were ensiled with or without 1% or 2% pyroligneous acid. Dynamics of the fermentation characteristics, CO2 production, and bacterial communities during ensiling were analyzed. Pyroligneous acid increased the lactic acid content and decreased the weight losses, pH, ammonia-N content, butyric acid content, and coliform bacterial numbers (all P < 0.05). It also increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus and decreased the relative abundances of harmful bacteria such as Enterobacter and Lachnoclostridium. Adding pyrolytic acids reduced the gas production, especially of CO2. It also increased the relative abundances of CO2-producing bacterial genera and of genera with the potential for CO2 fixation. In conclusion, adding pyroligneous acid improved the fermentation quality of the two silages. During ensiling, CO2 production was correlated with bacterial community alterations. Using pyroligneous acid altered the bacterial community to reduce CO2 production during ensiling. Given the large production and demand for silage worldwide, application of pyroligneous acid may be an effective method of mitigating global warming via CO2 emissions.

Abstract
CO2 production during ensiling is a source of greenhouse gases emissions and a cause of nutrient loss of silage. To investigate the influence of additives on CO2 production and relevant bacterial communities, stylo and rice straw were ensiled with sucrose and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP). After 30 days fermentation, LP reduced CO2 production (from 66.2 to 0 mL/100 g fresh matter in stylo, from 83.7 to 16.6 mL/100 g fresh matter in rice straw) and weight loss (from 2.71 to 1.72% in stylo, from 2.75 to 2.40% in rice straw). CO2 production was positively correlated (P < 0.05) with Lactococcus (0.99), Leuconostoc (0.55), Lachnoclostridium (0.45), Prevotella (0.23) and was negatively correlated (P < 0.05) with Serratia (-0.66), Sphingobacterium (-0.58), Pediococcus (-0.36). LP decreased the relative abundance of genera positively correlated with CO2 production and increased that of genera negatively correlated. In conclusion, LP could reduce CO2 production by altering bacterial community during ensiling.

Abstract
Silage treated with lactic acid bacteria inoculants has been reported to increase ruminal microbial biomass when tested in vitro. Therefore, we tested if alfalfa silage inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum MTD-1 would improve ruminal N metabolism and increase milk production in high-producing dairy cows. Twenty-eight early lactation Holstein cows (8 ruminally cannulated) were blocked by DIM and milk production; animals were used in a double crossover design consisting of four 28-d periods. Animals in each block were randomly assigned to 2 treatments: a diet containing uninoculated alfalfa silage (control) and a diet containing alfalfa silage inoculated with L. plantarum MTD-1 (LP). Diets were formulated to contain 50% of alfalfa silage, 16% crude protein, and 25% neutral detergent fiber (dry matter basis). Milk production and dry matter intake were recorded in the last 14 d of each period. Milk samples were collected twice at both daily milkings on d 20, 21, 27, and 28 of each period. On d 22, omasal samples were collected from the cannulated animals over a period of 3 d to quantify ruminal digestibility and nutrient flows. Data were analyzed using mixed models of SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute). Compared to the control, cows receiving the LP treatment had greater milk production (40.4 vs. 39.6 kg/d) and lower milk urea nitrogen concentration (11.6 vs. 12.7 mg/dL), despite minor changes in energy-corrected milk. Milk lactose concentration was greater in the milk produced by cows fed the LP treatment, which reflected a tendency for increased milk lactose yield. Although milk true protein concentration was lower for cows in the LP treatment, milk true protein yield was the same on both control and LP treatments. Improvements in milk production of animals under the LP treatment were associated with greater organic matter truly digested in the rumen, especially ruminal neutral detergent fiber digestion. Minor changes were observed in total omasal microbial nonammonia N flow in cows receiving the LP treatment. Therefore, alfalfa silage treated with L. plantarum MTD-1 may improve ruminal fermentation and milk production; however, because of a lack of response in ruminal N metabolism, these changes did not result in greater energy-corrected milk in high-producing dairy cows.

Abstract
Wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) is a high moisture feed containing rapidly digestible, non-forage fiber and protein. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of substituting WCGF and corn stover for alfalfa hay in total mixed ration (TMR) silage on lactation performance and nitrogen balance in dairy cows. Nine multiparous Holstein dairy cows (BW = 532 ± 28.9 kg and day in milk = 136 ± 5.6 d; mean ± SD) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods (14 d of diet adaption and 7 d of sample collection). Groups were balanced for parity, day in milk, and milk production and consumed one of three treatment diets during each period. The treatment diets were fed as TMR and contained similar concentrate mixtures and corn silage but different proportions of roughage and WCGF. The three treatments were: (1) 0% WCGF, 0% corn stover, and 22.1% alfalfa hay (0% WCGF); (2) 6.9% WCGF, 3.4% corn stover, and 11.8% alfalfa hay (7% WCGF); and (3) 13.3% WCGF, 4.9% corn stover, and 3.9% alfalfa hay (13.3% WCGF). Compared to the 0% WCGF diet, the cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets had a higher milk yield and concentration of milk fat, protein, lactose, and total solids. Effective degradability of DM was higher in the cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than it was with the 0% WCGF diet. Cows fed the 13.3% WCGF had a higher CP effective degradability and a lower rumen undegraded protein than cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. The concentration of ruminal volatile fatty acids and ammonia-N was higher in cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. The fecal N was lower in cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than it was in cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. Milk N secretion and milk N as a percent of N intake were higher in cows fed the 13.3% WCGF diet than cows fed the 0% and 7% WCGF diets. In conclusion, it appears that feeding a TMR silage containing WCGF and corn stover in combination, replacing a portion of alfalfa hay, may improve lactation performance and nitrogen utilization for lactating dairy cows.

Abstract
To evaluate the feasibility of bamboo shoot shell (BSS) application in total mixed ration silage (TMR) production, the effects of BSS substitution for whole-crop corn on the fermentation characteristics, nutritive value, aerobic stability and in vitro parameters of TMR silage were studied. Four TMR formulations were designed based on dry matter: (1) 0% bamboo shoot shell + 23% whole-crop corn (BSS0 ); (2) 4% bamboo shoot shell + 19% whole-crop corn (BSS4 ); (3) 8% bamboo shoot shell + 15% whole-crop corn (BSS8 ); and (4) 12% bamboo shoot shell + 11% whole-crop corn (BSS12 ). After 90 days of ensiling, the silos were opened and sampled for fermentation characteristics, nutritive value and in vitro analyses, and subsequent 14-day aerobic stability test. All TMR silages were well preserved except BSS12 , characterized by high lactic acid content and V-score, low pH and NH3 -N and butyric acid content. With increasing proportion of BSS, crude protein increased (p <.05), and water soluble carbohydrate decreased (p < .05). Under aerobic exposure, BSS-substituted (BSS4 , BSS8 and BSS12 ) silages were more stable than BSS0 silage, as characterized by relatively low silage temperature and high water soluble carbohydrate content. No obvious (p> .05) difference of BSS substitution was observed on in vitro ruminal gas production, digestibility, metabolizable energy and net energy for lactation. The substitution of whole-crop corn with 4% BSS and 8% BSS had no undesired effect on the fermentation characteristics and in vitro digestibility, and efficiently improving the aerobic stability of TMR silages. The BSS8 substitution level is recommended to maximize the BSS utilization.

Abstract
Two lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains with different ferulic acid esterase (FAE) activities were isolated: Lactobacillus farciminis (LF18) and Lactobacillus plantarum (LP23). The effects of these strains on the fermentation quality, in vitro digestibility and phenolic acid extraction yields of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) silage were studied at 20, 30 and 40 °C. Sorghum was ensiled with no additive (control), LF18 or LP23 for 45 days. At 40 °C, the lactic acid content decreased, whereas the ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) content significantly increased (p < 0.05). At all three temperatures, the inoculants significantly improved the lactic acid contents and reduced the NH3-N contents (p < 0.05). Neither LP23 nor LF18 significantly improved the digestibility of sorghum silages (p > 0.05). The LP23 group exhibited higher phenolic acid extraction yields at 30 °C (p < 0.05), and the corresponding yields of the LF18 and control groups were improved at 40 °C (p < 0.05). FAE-producing LABs might partially ameliorate the negative effects of high temperature and improve the fermentation quality of sorghum silage. The screened FAE-producing LABs could be candidate strains for preserving sorghum silage at high temperature, and some further insights into the relationship between FAE-producing LABs and ensiling temperatures were obtained.

Abstract
The environment temperature and its effect on the temperature of silage is very important for the fermentation and subsequent quality of a silage. Obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) inocula, because of their ability to inhibit yeasts, have been developed to prevent the aerobic deterioration of silages. The temperature during silage conservation may also play an important role in the fermentation profile of silages. This study has evaluated the effect of temperature, during the conservation of whole crop corn silage, untreated or treated with different LAB inocula, on the fermentation profile and on the aerobic stability of the silage. Corn was harvested at 42% dry matter and either not treated (control) or treated with Lactobacillus buchneri NCIMB 40788 (LB) at 300,000 cfu/g fresh matter (FM); Lactobacillus hilgardii CNCM I-4785 at 150,000 cfu/g FM (LH150); L. hilgardii CNCM I-4785 at 300,000 cfu/g FM (LH300); or LB+LH at 150,000 cfu/g FM each. In an attempt to experimentally simulate temperature fluctuations in the mass or at the periphery of a silage bunker, corn was conserved in laboratory silos at a constant temperature (20 ± 1°C; MASS) or at lower and variable outdoor temperatures (PERIPH; ranging from 0.5 to 19°C), and the silos were opened after 15, 30, and 100 d of conservation. Lactic acid, acetic acid, and ethanol contents increased in all the silages over the conservation period. The lactic acid content was higher (+10%) in the silages kept at a constant temperature than those conserved at the lower and variable outdoor temperatures. The acetic acid was higher in the treated silages than in the control ones conserved at a constant temperature for 100 d. Moreover, 1,2-propanediol was only detected in the treated silages after at least 30 d at a constant temperature, whereas only traces were detected in the LB+LH treatment for the other temperature conditions. The yeast count decreased during conservation at a slower rate in PERIPH than in MASS and on average reached 2.96 and 4.71 log cfu/g for MASS and PERIPH, respectively, after 100 d of conservation. The highest aerobic stability values were observed for LH300 (191 h) in the MASS silage after 100 d of conservation, whereas the highest aerobic stability was observed in LB+LH (150 h) in the PERIPH silages. After 7 d of air exposure, a pH higher than 4.5 and a higher yeast than 8.0 log cfu/g were detected in all the silages opened after 15 and 30 d of conservation. A pH value close to that of silo opening was detected in the LB, LH150, and LH300 silages conserved under MASS conditions after 100 d, whereas LB+LH was the most effective under PERIPH conditions. The temperature and its fluctuation during conservation of silage in laboratory silos influenced the fermentation, which in turn had an effect on the quality of silage and on the extent of the effect of LAB inocula.

We investigated the variation in microbial community and fermentation characteristics of whole-plant corn silage after treatment with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and organic acids. The fresh corn forages were treated with a combination of L. acidophilus and L. plantarum (106 CFU/g fresh material) or a 7:1:2 ratio of formic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid (6 mL/g fresh material) followed by 45 or 90 days of ensiling. Silages treated with LAB showed increased lactic acid content and decreased pH after 45 days. Although treatment with LAB or organic acids decreased the common and unique operational taxonomic units, indicating a reduction in microbial diversity, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus was elevated after 45 and 90 days compared with control, which was more distinct in the organic acid groups. Moreover, we found higher levels of acetic acid and increased abundance of Acetobacter in silages treated with organic acids whereas undesirable microorganisms such as Klebsiella, Paenibacillus, and Enterobacter were reduced. In summary, the quality of corn silages was improved by LAB or organic acid treatment in which LAB more effectively enhanced lactic acid content and reduced pH while organic acid inhibited the growth of undesirable microorganisms.

Abstract
Simple Summary Ensiling total mixed ration allows preservation and saves labor for small farms. This study evaluated the substitution relationship between lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus plantarum) and silage components, and verified the practicality of preservative (potassium sorbate) in total mixed ration silage. The results showed that potassium sorbate greatly improved the preservation efficiency of total mixed ration silages. The alfalfa silage could directly produce an acidic environment for fresh total mixed ration before ensiling and showed comparable function to inoculant in the improvement of fermentation quality. Therefore, the application of the inoculant is not necessary when the total mixed ration contains a certain percentage of silage. These findings could provide guidance for farmers to avoid the blind use of inoculants and the spoilage of total mixed ration silage, which could directly improve economic efficiency. Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the application of an inoculant and a preservative on the fermentation quality, in vitro digestibility, and aerobic stability of alfalfa silage-based fermented total mixed ration (TMR). The TMR was ensiled with (1) no additives (control), (2) Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), or (3) potassium sorbate (PS). The V-scores of all silages were higher than 80 points during the 30 days of ensiling. The addition of LP and PS had no effects on the in vitro parameters, such as in vitro digestibility and in vitro gas production (p > 0.05). LP-treated silage showed similar fermentation quality and comparable aerobic stability to the control (110 h). The LP only decreased the ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) content (p < 0.05) during ensiling. The PS significantly increased the pH of TMR silages (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the addition of PS improved the aerobic stability (>162 h) of TMR silage, indicated by the higher water-soluble carbohydrate content and lower NH3-N content in comparison with those in the control after aerobic exposure (p < 0.05). The improvement in fermentation quality is extremely small in terms of applying LP in TMR silage based on a large percentage of other silage ingredients. The PS is effective in conserving unpacked TMR silage and showed the potential to reduce the risk of ruminal acidosis in livestock.

Abstract
Both inoculants treatment and enzyme treatment promote the reproduction of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to produce enough lactic acid to lower pH in silage. The present study investigated the microbial community and metabolome in cellulase, Lactobacillus casei, and air treated alfalfa silage. Chopped and wilted alfalfa (first cutting, 29% dry matter) was ensiled without (CON) or with L. casei (1 × 106 cfu g–1 fresh matter) (LC) or cellulase (20,000IU, 0.5% of fresh matter) (CE) for 56 days, then exposed to air for 3 days (PO). Greater ensiling quality was observed in LC and CE, which had lower pH and higher lactic acid content than CON at 56 days of ensiling and 3 days post-oxygen exposure. Air exposure was associated with decreased lactic acid concentrations and increased yeast and mold counts in all silages. SEM showed that the structure of leaf epicuticular wax crystals were intact in fresh alfalfa, totally decomposed in CON silage, and partly preserved in CE and LC silage. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry revealed that 196 metabolites and 95 differential concentration were present in the 3 days air exposure samples. Most of these metabolites, mainly organic acids, polyols, ketones, aldehydes, are capable of antimicrobial activity. The bacterial communities were obviously different among groups and Lactobacillus developed to a dominant status in all silages. Lactobacillus became dominant in bacterial communities of LC and CE silages from days 7 to 56, and their relative abundances reached 94.17–83.93% at day 56, respectively. For CON silage, until day 56, Lactobacillus dominated the bacterial community with abundance of 75.10%. After 3 days of oxygen exposure, Lactobacillus and Enterococcus were predominant in CON, and Lactobacillus remained dominant in LC and CE silages. The results indicated that, compared to untreated silages, L. casei could be a priority inoculant for alfalfa silage to boost Lactobacillus abundance and improve fermentation quality. Our high-throughput sequencing and gas chromatography mass spectrometry results provide a deep insight into the bacterial community and metabolites in alfalfa silage.

Abstract
A study was conducted to determine the effects of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on nutritive value and in vitro rumen digestibility of maize and rice straw silages. Two identical experiments were carried out for each of the two silages. A total of five treatments were used for each experiment: (1) negative control (NC); (2) positive control (PC); (3) Lactobacillus plantarum (LPL); (4) L. paracasei (LPA); and (5) L. acidophilus (LA). Each treatment was then divided into four ensiling periods: 3, 7, 20, and 40 days with three replications. The LPL treatment had significantly higher dry matter (DM), lower ammonia-N, and a lower number of fungi on maize silage after 40 days (p < 0.05). On the other hand, the LA treatment increased DM and CP content, reduced NDF and ADF contents compared to NC, and also produced more lactic acid compared to the other LAB-treated rice straw silages. Results of the in vitro rumen fermentation of maize silages showed no significant differences in DMD after LAB inoculation. However, higher DMD and ruminal ammonia-N were shown by rice straw ensiled with L. acidophilus. In conclusion, silage additives, which could improve the ensiling process of maize and rice straw, appeared to be different and substrate specific.

Abstract
AIMS This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of sorbic acid (SA) as a silage additive and its effects on fermentation quality and aerobic stability of high dry matter (DM) silage. METHODS AND RESULTS High DM rice straw was ensiled with distilled water (C), 1 × 106 CFU per gram fresh weight (FW) Lactobacillus plantarum and 1 × 106 CFU per gram FW Lactobacillus buchneri (LP+LB) or SA for 45 days with a subsequent aerobic stability test. After ensiling, LP+LB silage had the highest lactic acid (LA) content and the lowest pH value, whereas SA silage had the highest DM and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) contents, and the lowest ethanol and ammonia nitrogen (NH3 -N) contents among all silages (P < 0·001). Compared to C silage, SA significantly (P < 0·01) reduced the counts of yeasts but not lactic acid bacteria (LAB). During 6-day aerobic exposure, the continuous pH increase and LA decrease were observed in C and LP+LB silages, and there was no significant change in pH, DM, NH3 -N and WSC contents of SA silage over the whole aerobic exposure. The SA addition slowed the decline of LA and acetic acid (AA) contents as well as the growth of yeasts and aerobic bacteria under aerobic exposure. CONCLUSION In this study, L. buchneri could not function in high DM rice straw silage while SA effectively improved both the fermentation quality and aerobic stability. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The SA was more effective than dual-purpose inoculants to improve the aerobic stability of high DM rice straw silage. Thus, SA can be served as a potential antifungal additive for silage with high DM.

Abstract
The main challenge of ensiling is conserving the feed through a fermentative process that results in high nutritional and microbiological quality while minimizing fermentative losses. This challenge is of growing interest to farmers, industry and research and involves the use of additives to improve the fermentation process and preserve the ensiled material. Most studies involved microbial additives; lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been the focus of much research and have been widely used. Currently, LABs are used in modern and sustainable agriculture because of their considerable potential for enhancing human and animal health. Although the number of studies evaluating LABs in silages has increased, the potential use of these micro-organisms in association with silage has not been adequately studied. Fermentation processes using the same strain produce very different results depending on the unique characteristics of the substrate, so the choice of silage inoculant for different starting substrates is of extreme importance to maximize the nutritional quality of the final product. This review describes the current scenario of the bioprospecting and selection process for choosing the best LAB strain as an inoculant for ensiling. In addition, we analyse developments in the fermentation process and strategies and methods that will assist future studies on the selection of new strains of LAB as a starter culture or inoculant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to investigate the effects of wilting and microbial inoculant treatment on the fermentation pattern and quality of Italian ryegrass silage. METHODS Italian ryegrass was harvested at heading stage and ensiled into vinyl bags (20 cm×30 cm) for 60d. Italian ryegrass was ensiled with 4 treatments (NWNA, no-wilting noadditive; NWA, no-wilting with additive; WNA, wilting no-additive; WA, wilting with additive) in 3 replications, wilting time was 5 hours and additives were treated with 106 cfu/g of Lactobacillus plantarum. The silages samples were collected at 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 45, and 60 days after ensiling and analyzed for the ensiling quality and characteristics of fermentation patterns. RESULTS Wilting treatment resulted in lower crude protein and in vitro dry matter digestibility and there were no significant differences in acid detergent fiber (ADF), total digestible nutrient (TDN), water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC), ammonia content, and pH (p>0.05). However, wilting treatment resulted in higher ADF and neutral detergent fiber content of Italian ryegrass silage (p<0.05), and the WNA treatment showed the lowest TDN and in vitro dry matter digestibility. The pH of the silage was higher in the wilting group (WNA and WA) and lower in the additive treatment group. Meanwhile, the decrease in pH occurred sharply between the 3-5th day of storage. The ammonia nitrogen content was significantly lower in the additive treatment (p<0.05), and wilting had no effect. As fermentation progressed, the lactic and acetic acid contents were increased and showed the highest content at 30 days of storage. CONCLUSION The wilting treatment did not significantly improve the silage fermentation, but the inoculant treatment improved the fermentation patterns and quality of the silage. So, inoculation before ensiling is recommended when preparing high quality of Italian ryegrass silage, and when wilting, it is recommended to combine inoculation for making high quality silage.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the mechanism of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) involved in improving fermentation quality of naturally ensiled alfalfa under poor conditions. High-moisture wilted alfalfa was ensiled without inoculants (CK) or with inoculation of two L. plantarum additives (LPI and LPII). The pH and fermentation products of silage were determined after 30 and 90 days of ensiling. Additionally, the bacterial community compositions were analyzed. The L. plantarum inoculants significantly promoted lactic acid accumulation, and Lactobacillus abundance for both periods. At 90 days, silage in CK exhibited a high pH, a loss in dry matter, and a high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen. The inoculations of L. plantarum significantly inhibited the growth of Clostridia, and reduced ammoniacal nitrogen concentration in silage (P < 0.05). Thus, inoculation with L. plantarum improved the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage and inhibited the growth of spoilage microorganisms, and further delayed spoilage of alfalfa silage under adverse ensiling conditions.
