Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy poses a significant public health problem in many parts of the world. The majority of people with epilepsy (PWE) are from low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Taenia solium neurocysticercosis (NCC) is estimated to cause 30% of preventable epilepsy in PWE in areas of T. solium endemicity. This study was conducted to assess the prevalence of NCC in PWE, evaluate the presence of cognitive impairment in PWE and assess potentially contributing factors. METHODS PWE were recruited within a mental health clinic-based cross-sectional study in rural Southern Tanzania. PWE underwent a detailed neurological examination, including mental state, and a blood sample was collected for T. solium cysticercosis (CC) serology testing. Patients who were serologically positive for CC and those detected to have prominent neurological deficits apart from epilepsy were invited to receive a cerebral computed tomography (CT) examination. RESULTS Out of the 223 people with epilepsy (PWE) recruited, 221 underwent clinical examination. Among these, 26 (11.8 %) had cognitive impairment, and 2 had neurological signs or symptoms without cognitive impairment. Twenty-five of the 223 PWE (11.2 %) tested positive for CC, of which 4 had cognitive impairment. One hundred and ninety-eight (88.8 %) tested negative for CC, of which 22 had cognitive impairment. A total of 36 participants underwent CT scans, with 18 testing positive and 18 testing negative for CC. Of the 36 who had CT scans, 8 (22.2 %) were diagnosed with NCC; 7 were CC positive, and 1 was CC negative; only the latter had cognitive impairment. Multivariate logistic regression confirmed that cognitive impairment in PWE was 8.62 times higher for Kongwa participants than Chunya, with a statistically significant association (95 % CI: 1.75, 156; p = 0.037). Additionally, having and education was associated with a 91 % reduction in the odds of cognitive impairment (OR = 0.09) compared to no education, which was also statistically significant (95 % CI: 0.01, 0.33; p = 0.002). There was no association between cognitive impairment and NCC. CONCLUSION Our study found a 22.2 % prevalence of NCC among PWE. Cognitive impairment was present in 11.8 % of PWE but was not significantly associated with NCC. Socioeconomic and educational factors may play a larger role in cognitive impairment among PWE.

Abstract
Introduction Sex steroid hormones are emerging significant biomarkers of depression among Women with Epilepsy (WWE) with promising prognostic potential and therapeutic end point. Therefore, the study is aimed at exploring the association between sex steroids hormones, Anti-seizure Medication (ASM) and depression among WWE. Methodology A baseline questionnaire was used to obtain socio-demographics and clinical characteristic from one hundred and twelve (112) WWE and 50 age matched healthy control. The diagnosis of epilepsy and Electroencephalography (EEG) description was based on 2017 International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) criteria. Blood samples were collected from cases and control during Luteal Phase (LP) and Follicular Phase (FP). The Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZSRDS) was used to assess depression. Result The prevalence of depression among WWE is 18.8%, with a significant difference between the level of formal education (p0.000), age (p0.000), and mean ZSRDS (p0.000) among cases and control. There is a statistical difference in hormonal levels between cases and control with regards to higher testosterone [3.28 ± 9.99 vs. 0.31 ± 0.30; p0.037], lower FP prolactin [16.37 ± 20.14 vs. 17.20 ± 7.44; p0.778], and lower LP prolactin [15.74 ± 18.22 vs. 17.67 ± 7.27; p0.473]. Testosterone (p0.024), FP Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) (p0.009), FP Estradiol (p0.006), LP FSH (p0.031), LP Progesterone (p0.023), and LP Prolactin (p0.000) were associated with depression. However, only prolactin (p0.042) and testosterone (p0.000) predicts depression among WWE. Conclusion There was higher mean depression score, lower prolactin and higher testosterone level among cases compared to control. Furthermore, there was lower prolactin and higher testosterone level in Carbamazepine (CBZ) group compared to Levetiracetam (LEV) groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to determine whether a brief memory enhancement course in persons with epilepsy (PWE) can improve cognitive abilities, quality of life, self-management, and seizure severity. METHODS Thirty-nine PWE completed a 1-hour memory enhancement course. This was preceded by a baseline/preintervention assessment (BA/PRE), followed by postintervention assessment (POST) at 1 & 1/2 to 3 months, and a delayed postintervention assessment evaluation (DPOST) at 4 & 1/2 to 6 months after course completion. In order to assess for retesting bias, an additional 30 PWE underwent a separate BA and PRE. RESULTS There was significant improvement on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Patient Information System version 2.0 Cognitive Function Abilities Subset and the Epilepsy Self-Management Scale (ESMS) on both POST and DPOST when compared with BA/PRE. Retesting bias did not occur. On ESMS subscale evaluation, significant improvement occurred on the Lifestyle Management subscale. There was no improvement in quality of life and seizure severity. There was good patient acceptability for the memory program. CONCLUSION A brief memory enhancement course results in sustained improvement in cognitive functioning and self-management of PWE.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment and quality of life (Qol) are important to assess the burden of epilepsy and neurocysticercosis (NCC), which are common but neglected in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The aims of this study were to assess cognitive performance and Qol of people with epilepsy (PWE) in Zambia and to explore differences in PWE with and without NCC. In this community based, cross-sectional case-control-study, 47 PWE and 50 healthy controls completed five neuropsychological tests (Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Digit Span, Selective Reminding Test (SRT), Spatial Recall Test (SPART), Test Battery of Attentional Performance (TAP)) and a World Health Organization (WHO) questionnaire of Qol. Comparisons were made between PWE (n=47) and healthy controls (n=50) and between PWE with NCC (n=28) and without NCC (n=19), respectively, using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and Linear Models (LMs) while correcting for confounders such as age, sex, and schooling years, and adjusting for multiplicity. Working memory, spatial memory, verbal memory, verbal learning, orientation, speech and language reception, visuoconstructive ability, and attentional performance were significantly reduced in PWE compared with healthy controls (ANCOVA and LM, p<0.05). Quality of life of PWE was significantly lower in three domains (psychological, social, environmental) and in overall Qol compared with healthy controls (ANCOVA, p<0.05). There were no significant differences between PWE with NCC and PWE without NCC detected by ANCOVA. Using LM, significant differences between the groups were detected in four tests, indicating worse performance of PWE without NCC in MMSE, Digit Span, SPART, and lower physical Qol. Epilepsy was found to be associated with cognitive impairment and reduced Qol. People with epilepsy due to NCC had similar cognitive impairment and Qol compared with PWE due to other causes. Further studies should investigate the role of different conditions of NCC and the role of seizures on cognition and Qol.

Abstract
Introduction The analysis of the representations of the health of their students by teachers is key to the understanding of the attitudes and behaviors that, in general, take place inside the school community and the educational processes. In fact, social attitudes by teachers and individual within the school environment are often the result of simple categorization and stereotypes, which hinder the process of evolutionary change. Aims On these premises it was necessary to investigate the level of knowledge of the epilepsy syndrome, the representations by a group of teachers of the quality of life of people with epilepsy and the representations of the interpersonal relationships between students with epilepsy and their classmates. Methodology We used an ad hoc questionnaire, with 33 multiple choice answers, focusing on these variables: work seniority, experience with epileptic students, special education or main teacher. Participants The sample consisted of 113 female teachers with a mean age of 44.4. Results There aren’t significant differences between the answers of special education and main teachers: a) teachers with work seniority > 11 years showed a more than adequate knowledge of information about epilepsy. Moreover, in case of seizure in the classroom, first aid is to call an ambulance rather than administering rescue drugs; b) teachers, who have had a real experience, represent the epileptic student as more limited in the possibilities of getting married, having children, finding a job, and practising a sport; c) teachers, who have had a student with epilepsy don’t report interpersonal relationships with his/her classmates as being difficult. Moreover, they claim to have inadequate knowledge of the educational strategies needed to integrate the epileptic student with his/her classmates; d) there are some different answers for primary school teachers and for secondary school teachers. Conclusions Teachers demonstrate inaccurate information about epilepsy, its impact in educational contexts and management of seizures in the classroom. Also, critical areas have emerged indicating efforts should focus on education, sharing the role of teacher, awareness and integration in the class group.

Abstract
Neurocognitive impairment is a detrimental complication of HIV infection. Here, we characterized the intellectual performance of patients with newly diagnosed HIV infection in southwestern Nigeria. We conducted a prospective study at Owo Federal Medical Center by using the adapted Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The raw scores were converted to standardized scores (z-scores) and correlated with clinical and laboratory findings. Fifty-eight HIV positive patients were recruited; 72% were in WHO stages 3 and 4. We detected a high rate of intellectual impairment in HIV positive patients and controls (63.8% and 10%, resp.; P < 0.001). HIV positive patients performed worse throughout the subtests of both verbal and performance intelligence quotients. Presence of opportunistic infections was associated with worse performance in the similarities and digit symbol tests and performance and full scale scores. Lower body weight correlated with poor performance in different WAIS subtests. The high rate of advanced disease stage warrants measures aimed at earlier diagnosis and treatment. Assessment of neurocognitive performance at diagnosis may offer the opportunity to improve functioning in daily life and counteract disease progression.

Abstract
We conducted a case-control study of 33 Jamaican children 7 to 12years old with uncomplicated epilepsy and 33 of their classroom peers matched for age and gender to determine whether epilepsy resulted in differences in cognitive ability and school achievement and if socioeconomic status or the environment had a moderating effect on any differences. Intelligence, language, memory, attention, executive function, and mathematics ability were assessed using selected tests from NEPSY, WISCR, TeaCh, WRAT3 - expanded, and Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices. The child's environment at home was measured using the Middle Childhood HOME inventory. Socioeconomic status was determined from a combination of household, crowding, possessions, and sanitation. We compared the characteristics of the cases and controls and used random effects regression models (using the matched pair as the cluster) to examine the relationship between cognition and epilepsy. We found that there was no significant difference in IQ, but children with epilepsy had lower scores on tests of memory (p<0.05), language (p<0.05), and attention (p<0.01) compared with their controls. In random effects models, epilepsy status had a significant effect on memory (coefficient=-0.14, CI: -0.23, -0.05), language (coefficient=-0.13, CI: -0.23, -0.04), and mathematics ability (coefficient=-0.01, CI: -0.02, -0.00). Adjustment for the home environment and socioeconomic status and inclusion of interaction terms for these variables did not alter these effects. In conclusion, we found that epilepsy status in Jamaican children has a significant effect on performance on tests of memory, language, and mathematics and that this effect is not modified or explained by socioeconomic status or the child's home environment.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To establish the nature of publications emanating from or relating to intellectual disability in Africa in the previous 12-18 months, and to critically analyse the nature and content of any new knowledge arising from them. RECENT FINDINGS Three papers satisfied the criteria set, one from Nigeria on epilepsy and intellectual disability, the other two were from South Africa. Kromberg's paper puts intellectual disability in context for South Africa, emphasizing the role potentially played by traditional healers. Pillay's paper tackles emerging issues in the psycholegal arena in South Africa, many of which are relevant to the rest of the continent. SUMMARY Of the many challenges facing persons with intellectual disability in Africa, high prevalence, discrimination, and access to justice and education are key considerations, in all countries, and without exception are coupled with poor resource allocation. The challenges posed by HIV, wars and internal displacement are significant and demand examination by researchers. Opportunities for beneficial research exist between Africa and the centres of academic excellence around the rest of the world. Those centres with the skill and will to collaborate with Africa will be handsomely rewarded by the wide scope of challenges in intellectual disability that are available for scientific enquiry. Opportunities for skills transfer are many and available.
