Angiomatoid Spitz nevus: a clinicopathological study of six cases and a review of the literature

ROS1 Fusion Angiomatoid Spitz Nevus With Eccrine Duct Fibroadenomatosis and Syringoid Features

ABSTRACT

Eccrine duct fibroadenomatosis is a reactive histological phenomenon observed in a variety of inflammatory and neoplastic pathologies. We report a case of a ROS1 fusion angiomatoid Spitz nevus with associated acrosyringeal hyperplasia and a syringoma-like ductal proliferation in a young female patient.

Proliferative nodule resembling angiomatoid Spitz tumor with degenerative atypia arising within a giant congenital nevus

Proliferative nodules arising within congenital melanocytic nevi often present a diagnostic challenge given a close resemblance to melanoma. Several morphologic variants have been characterized. In difficult cases, ancillary molecular tests can be used to better exclude the possibility of malignant degeneration. Herein, we report a case of an unusual proliferative nodule with overlapping features of angiomatoid Spitz tumor and ancient melanocytic nevus, which demonstrated normal findings on both chromosomal microarray and a gene expression profiling assay.

Angiomatoid Spitz nevus with surrounding pagetoid melanocytic proliferation on the sole of the foot: An unusual case report with immunohistochemical studies for angiogenic factors

Angiomatoid Spitz nevus (ASN) is a rare histological variant of Spitz nevus (SN) that is characterized by prominent blood vessel proliferation around the intradermal melanocytes of SN. In contrast, SN may have pagetoid components, which are characterized by epidermal proliferation of single melanocytes. However, cases of ASN with predominant pagetoid melanocytic proliferation in the epidermis have not been reported. Here, we report a case of ASN with surrounding pagetoid melanocytic proliferation without formation of tumor nests in the epidermis in the plantar region. A 12-year-old girl presented with a bright red nodule surrounded by a brown macule on the sole of her right foot. Histologically, the nodule showed tumor nests in the dermis, composed of spindle or epithelioid melanocytes containing abundant cytoplasm and large nuclei. Around the nests, numerous blood vessels were seen. In the overlying epidermis of the nodule, numerous eosinophilic Kamino bodies were found along the dermal-epidermal interface. In the macule, proliferation of oval melanocytes was present as single-cell units in the epidermis. Theses melanocytes had abundant cytoplasm with large nuclei, which were larger than those of the surrounding keratinocytes. From these findings, a diagnosis of ASN with surrounding pagetoid melanocytic proliferation was made. Vascular endothelial growth factor and fibroblast growth factor 2 were strongly expressed in the melanocytes as well as in the endothelial cells in our case. Therefore, angiogenic factors produced by the melanocytes of SN might have played important roles in the surrounding angiogenesis of this case.

The first case of vaginal angiomatoid Spitz nevus causing vaginal bleeding

Angiomatoid Spitz nevus is a variant of melanocytic nevus with prominent vasculature. Due to its pathologic features, angiomatoid Spitz nevus in the vaginal wall is extremely rare. A 42-year-old woman presented to the hospital with abnormal vaginal bleeding. Vaginal examination revealed a 2×2-cm well-demarcated tumor on the posterior wall of the vagina. The mass was successfully removed by complete excision and was diagnosed as angiomatoid Spitz nevus on pathologic examination. We present the first reported case of vaginal angiomatoid Spitz nevus, which caused vaginal bleeding. Although angiomatoid Spitz nevus has many histopathological similarities with malignant melanoma, precise histopathological diagnosis is important for preventing overtreatment.

Angiomatoid and desmoplastic Spitz nevus presenting as a keloidal nodule

Angiomatoid and desmoplastic Spitz nevi are rare histologic variants of Spitz nevi that present most frequently on the extremities of children and young adults. Although Spitz nevi are clinically heterogeneous, one presenting as a keloidal nodule has not been previously published. We present a case of an angiomatoid and desmoplastic Spitz nevus clinically akin to a keloid on an African-American teenager and describe its unique histopathologic features.

Unusual Histopathological Patterns in Melanocytic Nevi With Some Previously Undescribed Patterns

Melanocytic nevi are one of the most common diagnoses in the daily practice of any dermatopathologist. Although in the vast majority of cases the final diagnosis is not difficult, there are certain rare and unusual morphologic variations that can elicit some diagnostic problems. Although some of these variations can be considered as mere morphologic oddities, others might lead to a differential diagnosis with melanoma, or with other tumors, including epithelial or neural tumors. In the current report, we review many of these morphologic variations and discuss the main differential diagnosis, when appropriate.
