Real-time dimensional change in light-cured composites at various depths using laser speckle contrast analysis

Micro-computed tomography evaluation of volumetric polymerization shrinkage and degree of conversion of composites cured by various light power outputs

This study evaluated the influence of different light-curing modes on the volumetric polymerization shrinkage and degree of conversion of a composite resin at different locations using micro-computed tomography and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Specimens were divided into 4 groups based on the light-curing mode used (Bluephase 20i): 1 -High (1,200 mW/cm²); 2 -Low (650 mW/cm²); 3 -Soft-start (650-1,200 mW/cm²); and 4 -Turbo (2,000 mW/cm²). Degree of conversion was calculated by the measurement of the peak absorbance height of the uncured and cured materials at the specific wavenumbers, and was performed by FTIR 48 h after curing resin samples. Degree of conversion was analyzed using two-way ANOVA. No significant differences were observed independent of the region of the restoration investigated (p>0.05). Different curing modes did not influence volumetric shrinkage neither degree of conversion of class I composite resin restorations.

Assessment of curing behavior of light-activated dental composites using intensity correlation based multiple reference optical coherence tomography

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES

Monitoring the curing kinetics of light-activated resin is a key area of research. These resins are used in restorative applications and particularly in dental applications. They can undergo volumetric shrinkage due to poor control of the depth dependent curing process, modulated by the intensity and duration of the curing light source. This often results in the formation of marginal gaps, causing pain and damage to the restoration site. In this study, we demonstrate the capabilities of a correlation method applied using a multiple references optical coherence tomography (MR-OCT) architecture to monitor the curing of the resin.

STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS

A MR-OCT system is used in this study to monitor the curing of the resin. The system operates at the center wavelength of 1310 nm with an A-scan rate of 1200 A-scans per second. The axial and lateral resolution of the system is ∼13 μm and ∼27 μm. The method to determine the intensity correlation between adjacent B-frames is based on the Pearson correlation coefficient for a region of interest. Calculating the correlation coefficient for multiple B-frames related to the first B-frame at regular spaced time points, shows for a noncured resin a reduction of the correlation coefficient over time due to Brownian motion. The time constant of the reduction of the correlation value is a measure for the progress of the polymerization during LED light irradiation of the resin. The proposed approach is potentially a low-cost, powerful and unique optical imaging modality for measuring the curing behavior of dental resin and other resins, coatings, and adhesives in medical and industrial applications.

RESULTS

To demonstrate the proposed method to monitor the curing process, a light-activated resin composite from GRADIA DIRECT ANTERIOR (GC Corporation, Japan) is studied. The curing time of resin was measured and monitored as a function of depth. The correlation coefficient method is highly sensitive to Brownian motion. The process of curing results in a change in intensity as measured by the MR-OCT signal and hence can be monitored using this method.

CONCLUSIONS

These results show that MR-OCT has the potential to measure the curing time and monitor the curing process as a function of depth. Moreover, MR-OCT as a product has potential to be compact, low-cost and to fit into a smartphone. Using such a device for monitoring the curing of the resin will be suitable for dentists in stationary and mobile clinical settings.

Light polymerization during cavity filling: effect of 'exposure reciprocity law' and the resulted shrinkage forces on restoration margins

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate shrinkage development and marginal integrity of a micro hybrid restorative composite as a function of irradiance.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Linear displacement and shrinkage were measured with custom-made devices for irradiances of 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 mW/cm(2) at a constant radiant exposure of 16 J/cm(2). Marginal adaptation (MA) of composite restorations performed with a self-etch adhesive (Syntac Classic, Ivoclar Vivadent) and a micro hybrid composite (Tetric, Ivoclar Vivadent) was evaluated before and after mechanical loading with 300,000 cycles at 70 N.

RESULTS

The highest percentage of MA was attained by the group light cured with an irradiance of 100 mW/cm(2) for 160 s. No significant differences were observed between the rest of the groups. Shrinkage development was similar in all groups.

CONCLUSIONS

For the material tested in this study, the reciprocal relationship between irradiance and time of exposure had no significant effect on restoration margins and shrinkage stress development within the range of 200-1600 mW/cm(2) with a constant radiant exposure of 16 J/cm(2).

Shrinkage Stresses Generated during Resin-Composite Applications: A Review

Many developments have been made in the field of resin composites for dental applications. However, the manifestation of shrinkage due to the polymerization process continues to be a major problem. The material's shrinkage, associated with dynamic development of elastic modulus, creates stresses within the material and its interface with the tooth structure. As a consequence, marginal failure and subsequent secondary caries, marginal staining, restoration displacement, tooth fracture, and/or post-operative sensitivity are clinical drawbacks of resin-composite applications. The aim of the current paper is to present an overview about the shrinkage stresses created during resin-composite applications, consequences, and advances. The paper is based on results of many researches that are available in the literature.

Comparison of two methods for measuring the polymerization characteristics of flowable resin composites

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this study was to compare two methods for assessing the polymerization characteristics of flowable resin composites.

METHODS

Two different flowable resin composites and a hybrid resin composite control were investigated. In order to measure the volumetric shrinkage (DeltaV), each material was placed into a mould and extruded into a water-filled dilatometer. The specimens were then light irradiated for 30s using a curing unit with the power density adjusted to either 100 or 600mW/cm(2). For the speckle contrast measurement, each resin composite was condensed into a glass tube and irradiated. The laser-speckle field was recorded in a digital frame. The calculated values were obtained for each pair of adjacent patterns and the changes in speckle contrast as a function of time were obtained.

RESULTS

The average DeltaV values of the resins after 180s ranged from approximately 3.3 to 4.4% for the flowable composites and from approximately 1.8 to 2.3% for the hybrid composite control. The overall magnitude of the speckle contrasts decreased soon after the initial light exposure commenced and gradually increased thereafter. The speckle contrast measurements revealed changes in the pastes due to the polymerization of the flowable resins that were greater than those obtained with the water-filled dilatometer.

SIGNIFICANCE

These data suggest that the polymerization characteristics of flowable resins can be measured successfully using two different methods. Moreover, our findings are of clinical relevance, as the data obtained under laboratory conditions might give an indication of the suitability of flowable resin composites for specific clinical applications.
