Abstract
PURPOSE Hormones play a critical role in regulating various physiological processes and any hormonal imbalances can lead to major endocrine disorders. Thus, studying hormones is essential for both the therapeutics and the diagnostics of hormonal diseases. To facilitate this need, we have developed Hmrbase2, a comprehensive platform that provides extensive information on hormones. METHODS Hmrbase2 is a web-based database which is an update of a previously published database, Hmrbase ( http://crdd.osdd.net/raghava/hmrbase/ ). We collected a large amount of information on peptide and non-peptide hormones and hormone receptors, this information being sourced from Hmrbase, HMDB, UniProt, HORDB, ENDONET, PubChem, and the medical literature. RESULTS Hmrbase2 contains a total of 12,056 entries, which is more than twice the number of entries contained in the previous version Hmrbase. These include 7406, 753, and 3897 entries for peptide hormones, non-peptide hormones, and hormone receptors, respectively, from 803 organisms compared to the 562 organisms in the previous version. The database also hosts 5662 hormone receptor pairs. The source organism, function, and subcellular location are provided for peptide hormones and receptors and properties such as melting point and water solubility is provided for non-peptide hormones. Besides browsing and keyword search, an advanced search option has also been supplied. Additionally, a similarity search module has been incorporated enabling users to run similarity searches against peptide hormone sequences using BLAST and Smith-Waterman. CONCLUSIONS To make the database accessible to various users, we designed a user-friendly, responsive website that can be easily used on smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. The updated database version, Hmrbase2, offers improved data content compared to the previous version. Hmrbase2 is freely available at https://webs.iiitd.edu.in/raghava/hmrbase2 .

Abstract
Background: Differing environmental conditions experienced by mother-infant dyads may influence composition of the milk received by the infant. As a consequence, diverse milk compositional profiles may contribute to different postnatal outcomes, especially in infants facing adverse perinatal environments. We investigated whether variability in milk concentrations of key metabolic hormones is associated with different growth outcomes in infants born preterm, a perinatal complication known to impact on infant growth. Methods: Human milk samples were collected from 169 mothers of 191 infants enrolled in the DIAMOND trial, a randomized trial of nutrition for moderate-late preterm infants, at 5 and 10 days postpartum and again at 4 months' corrected age and analyzed for leptin, adiponectin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1. Infant weight and body composition were measured at birth, discharge and 4 months' corrected age. Multiple linear regression models were used to examine correlations between milk hormone concentrations, weight z-scores and body composition at discharge and 4 months' corrected age, and weight gain from birth to 4 months' corrected age. Sex-specific interactions were examined. Results: Higher milk IGF-1 concentrations on day 5 after birth were associated with greater infant fat-free mass at 4 months' corrected age. Milk IGF-1 concentrations at 4 months were positively associated with fat mass and fat-free mass at 4 months in boys but not girls. Milk leptin concentrations on day 5 after birth were positively associated with fat mass at discharge from hospital, but negatively associated with fat mass at 4 months' corrected age. No significant association was found for milk adiponectin concentrations. Conclusion: Milk IGF-1 and leptin concentrations in mothers of moderate-late preterm babies are associated with different growth and body composition through to 4 months' corrected age and these associations are often different in boys and girls. The sex-specific effects of nutrient and hormone exposure during early life in preterm infants warrants further investigation to optimize the nutritional care these infants receive, particularly in hospital, where the same nutrition is provided to boys and girls.

Abstract
In Unani System of Medicine, humours (Akhlat) play a vital role in maintenance of health; imbalance of their proportion either qualitative or quantitative can cause disease. Akhlat refers to the body fluids under a wider perspective in the Unani Medicine, which also encompasses fluids designated as hormones by the Modern Medicine. Akhlat (humours) are those moist and fluid parts of the body which are produced after transformation and metabolism of the nutrition; they serve the function of growth, repair, produce energy, preservation of individual and the species. It is concerned with growth, multiplication, differentiation, and metabolic activities of different tissues and systems, and thereby maintains a correct physiological balance between them. Present paper is a review on the concept of Akhlat and an attempt to understand hormones.

Abstract
Context
Currently, the commonly used dietary calcium sources are not sufficiently bioavailable to be used for eggshell formation or bone health in laying hens. Protected calcium, a blend of calcium and medium-chain fatty acids with matrix coating, may exert an effective absorption and metabolism ability for calcium consumption in the laying hen.
Aims
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of protected-calcium supplementation on egg production, egg quality, and serum calcium and phosphorus concentrations in laying hens.
Methods
In total, 144 Hy-line brown laying hens (25 weeks old) were randomly allotted to three treatments (8 replicates with 6 hens, 1 hen per cage) in a 10-week trial. Treatments consisted of corn–wheat–soybean meal-based basal diet with limestone (coarse limestone:fine limestone = 50:50) as a calcium source (CON) or basal diet supplemented with 0.5% (P1) or 1% (P2) protected calcium in substitution for an equal quantity of coarse limestone. Data were statistically analysed using linear and quadratic contrast with the GLM procedure of SAS. Probability values of <0.05 indicate significance.
Key results
At Weeks 31–33 and 35, the cracked-egg rates were lower in the P1 and P2 groups than in the CON group (P < 0.05; linear, P < 0.05) and, at Weeks 29 and 34, the cracked-egg rates in the P2 group were also significantly (P < 0.05) decreased. At Weeks 26, 30 and 32, the Haugh units in the P2 group were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those in the CON group. In addition, eggshell strength was increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the P2 group at Weeks 26, 27 and 31–35. The serum calcium concentration of the P2 group was significantly (P < 0.05) greater than that of the CON group in the morning.
Conclusions
In conclusion, a replacement of limestone with 1% protected calcium can increase eggshell quality.
Implications
Protected-calcium supplementation can be used in practice for decreasing the breakage of eggs.

Abstract
Background: Thyroid hormones play a significant role in bone remodeling. However, there are few studies on the effect of these hormones on periodontium. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the periodontal status of hypothyroid patients on thyroxine replacement therapy. Materials and Methods: Clinical parameters (plaque index, bleeding index, probing pocket depth [PPD], and clinical attachment level [CAL]) and radiographic parameters (Mandibular cortical width and panoramic mandibular index) were recorded in 52 hypothyroid patients on thyroxine replacement therapy (Study group) and 50 individuals without signs and symptoms of thyroid dysfunction (Control group). The effect of dosage and duration of therapy on clinical and radiographical parameters were also assessed in the study group. Results: Statistically significant higher PPD (P = 0.008) and clinical attachment loss (P = 0.032) were observed in the study group in comparison to the control group. However, no significant differences were observed within the hypothyroid group with varying doses and duration of therapy. Furthermore, there was no correlation between the dosage and duration of therapy with periodontal status. Regression analysis showed that hypothyroidism and thyroxine replacement therapy was a significant predictor of PPD and CAL even after controlling for the effect of age in hypothyroid patients. Conclusion: Hypothyroid patients on thyroxine replacement therapy may be at increased risk for periodontal destruction. However, this needs to be validated through longitudinal studies.

Abstract
A biosensor detecting estrogens, progestogens, and androgens in complex samples and in a single step is described. Three Arxula adeninivorans yeast strains were created, each strain producing a different recombinant human hormone receptor and a different fluorescent reporter protein. These strains were then mixed to create G1212/YRC102-hHR-fluo, the biological component of the biosensor. During incubation with G1212/YRC102-hHR-fluo, hormones present in a sample bind to their target receptor, which leads to the production of a specific fluorescent protein. Three fluorescence scans of the yeast suspension determine which fluorescence protein has been produced, thus revealing which hormone receptor (estrogen, progesterone, and androgen) has been activated by the hormones or hormone mimics present in the sample. The biosensor has similar sensitivities to the existing A. adeninivorans cell-based assays. The detection of the three hormone classes in one single experiment reduces the labor and time required to assay for the three hormone classes. The biosensor was also trialed with animal serum samples for the detection of progestogens, androgens, and estrogens and gave results that correlated well with ELISA analysis in case of progestogens. These results highlight the potential usefulness of the biosensor for comprehensive determination of hormone status in samples from veterinary origin. Biotechnol.
